There was a relatively large stock pot in which, I supposed, the main meal was cooked. The brochure (dated 1976) read simply that the food was the best that could be had under the circumstances, although it did not say what this typically consisted of. Under conditions of low battery power, galley heat was restricted to coffee or soup.

One would expect to hear something about canned fruit or fruit juices to keep off the sailor's ancient enemy of scurvy and add some sweet taste alongside the usual stews and soups. I suppose vitamin pills are much smaller and easier to store on board than cans, but have not heard or read of either case.
Once the fresh food was eaten or disposed of, the fare for the rest of the voyage was sausage and canned food, mainly kraut. The cook was one of the most valued crew members, especially if he could make sausage and kraut taste good, This was no easy trick in a U-boat where, very quickly, all food took on the taste of the boat, a not terribly pleasant combination of diesel oil, mould, and bilge smells. The situation was made worse later in the war by the regular addition of a soya-based filler, called Bratlingspulver, which gave everything a bland flavour.

Bratlingspulver was a powdered soybean-based filler, but I suspect it was in more widespread and earlier use than Stern suggests on board U-boats. Interestingly, the British also had a soya-based sausage that they, too, came to detest from over-use. These products sound like the American distaste for over-used Spam, or that of the Japanese for coconut meat on outlying islands. War is always culinary hell, too..
