It is poisonous and can be irritating if not cooked or preprocessed if i read that right, but no cyanide.

I was astonished what people can make use of this plant, of course there are different species.
You can use the plant for a lot of things, also for decoration, for which it is often used privately.
Not all of those grow as big as what i photographed, also you do not often see this, at least i didn't.

It is a succulent but not a cactus, botanically. It prefers arid environmants alright and has developed certain methods to survive.

Not a Joshua tree (and it is not a tree), but BIG HINT the leaves look a bit like those of the J. tree.

@the beast, why too small? Agaves can each incredible sizes, and the seed shoot can reach up to 15 meters, though it takes decades to bloom, and some species die directly after this.
I wonder if there are no agaves in or near the Napa valley?

Yes, that it is!
I was astonished what can be made of this plant, from the sap, to fruit water, to leaves, and of course pulque, mezcal and tequila. It isn originally an american species, but it has been planted everywhere in the world, especially in the mediterranean region.
But you can even plant them in Germany as long as temperatures do not get lower than -10 degrees Celsius, and of course in England thanks to the gulf stream.
Made the photo on the island of Sardinia, i had never seen this before, and that size.. the plant itself had a diametre of appx. 3 meters.

I have always thought of a kind of paleobotanical garden, filled with plants that exist since jurassic times like tree ferns, cycads etc., but i found out tree ferns are hard to cultivate over a long time here - while they do not need much there has to be constant water and moisture supply. I have lost them three times to hot weather and coddled them up again, but i never get over 50 cm or so. Well it's not exactly New Zealand here.
