Good question. The thing itself never had anything to do with the Olympics, yet Olympic events were held at the venue where and when it was constructed.

Hmm, Avus race track?
Quite right.
The 43 degree banked north curve of the AVUS racetrack in Germany known as 'The Wall of Death', constructed in 1936 and dismantled in 1967. No doubt one of the most impressive corners in motor racing history.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVUS
https://i.imgur.com/hx995MS.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/hlkJN9w.jpg
In an effort to make AVUS the "world's fastest race track", the 1936 season was skipped and while the track hosted the cycling road race, the marathon and 50 km walk athletic events of the 1936 Summer Olympics, the north curve was turned into a steeply banked turn (43°) made of bricks. It became dubbed the wall of death, especially as it had no retaining barrier, so cars that missed the turn easily flew off it. The Silver Arrows raced only once on the banked version, in 1937. As the AVUS race did not count towards the championship, non-GP cars were allowed, which permitted the use of streamlined cars, similar to the cars used for high speed record attempts. This race was run in two heats; during qualifying for the second heat, Luigi Fagioli stuck his Auto Union Type C on pole position, with a time of 4 minutes and 8.2 seconds at an average speed of 284.31 km/h (176.7 mph)- which was the fastest motor racing lap in history until this time was bettered by Tony Bettenhausen in qualifying for the 1957 Race of Two Worlds at Monza. It was also bettered by four drivers during the 1971 Indianapolis 500. Mercedes driver Hermann Lang's average race speed of about 276 km/h (171 mph) was the fastest road race in history for nearly five decades, and was not matched on a high-speed banked-circuit until the mid-1980s at the 1986 Indianapolis 500.Over to Catfish. :salute:

just saw it, sorry for being late..
Berlin and "no water" were valuable hints, but i never saw the surface structure of the AVUS 'Nordkurve' so close. Really thought of an aerial photograph at first.
btw the abbreviation means "Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungsstraße" (~Automobile traffic and test road), and some original portion is still part of today's Berlin city motorway. Too bad not this angled part though, would be fun to drive .. :haha:

^ ok let's forget about it, just to explain:
Mapuc had proposed that the letters mean "SPQR" (verified by me), so it was already clear it is roman, or italian.
Aktung asked whether it is made of cast iron (verified by me).
So i thought an italian cast-iron object with letters SPQR on it and described as a manhole cover by Jim is the solution.

Well it's a British Airways aircraft. I'm going to guess it's British Airways Flight 38 from Beijing. A Boeing 777-236ER that landed at London Heathrow with both engines failing to respond to auto-throttle on ILS approach and idled at about 500 feet AGL. The aircraft landed short and hard but everyone survives. True to human nature several passengers carry off their luggage with one even trying to reboard. The accident cause was attributed to ice crystals forming in fuel lines.

That was actually a devious bit of misdirection on my part.:D Sorry about that.:03: No, this is not U-47.

U-96?
That's it.
This is U-96 departing St. Nazaire 27 October 1941 for it's seventh patrol, the famous Das Boot patrol. In the conning tower we see commander Lehmann-Willenbrock and Obersteuermann Alfred Radermacher (Kriechbaum in the book/movie).
What makes it noteworthy is that U-96 does not carry the famous laughing swordfish emblem. All boats in the 7th flotilla were ordered in May 1941 to add the Scapa Flow snorting bull emblem to the conning tower in remembrance of Günther Prien. So during her 5th patrol U-96 carried both the snorting bull and the laughing swordfish. After the patrol the swordfish was removed completely and from then on she only carried the snorting bull. I did not know this until recently and it surprised me since the laughing swordfish emblem is so famous and features prominently in the movie.
As a sidenote: Amazingly the L.I. Friedrich Grade (105) and the II.W.O Werner Herrmann (101) from that patrol are still alive today!

Ah, I guess it must be the John Frost Bridge then. Thought about it before but did not see a resemblance with your photo. Build between 1932 and 1935 over the Lower Rhine in the city of Arnhem. Famous for the Battle of Arnhem in Operation Market Garden. Also known as the Rhine Bridge it was officially named after Major-General John Dutton "Johnny" Frost in 1978. Frost was an airborne officer of the British Army best known for being the leader of the small group of about 740 British airborne troops that took the northern end of the bridge and held out for several days against a much larger German force, waiting in vain for reinforcements.
Before the bridge was build there was a pontoon bridge located there, first build in 1603.

Yeah, that's it. It is the reactor lid. The square blocks are the protective caps of the fuel and control rods. The various colours you see indicate the position of various types of control rods.
The covers are the blocks that were dancing up and down in the HBO series Chernobyl.
Specifically this is reactor no. 2, which survived the disaster and remained in operation. Now decomissioned, which is why several caps are missing. Second photo shows the view of the entire reactor hall from the refueling operator room window.
