Catfish
04-14-20, 11:32 AM
@Aktung Not the HMS "Furious", as i said no carrier (though one could argue whether the "Furious" even could be called a "carrier" before the rebuild).
@Buddhaid Yes the question is about what can be seen under the biplane, i just answered the plane at the top was not a triplane, and later that it was a Sopwith biplane.
So it is not a triplane and not launching from a carrier.
So it is no ship , what sits beneath the Sopwith. And no "catapult".
Hint: it can swim though.
Aktungbby
04-14-20, 11:36 AM

Catfish
04-14-20, 01:05 PM
^ @u crank: Yep, this is it.
Again, sorry for my misleading/wrong answer. All those looking for a Sopwith were of course not able to find it
Curtiss "Felixstowe" Porte Baby, with "parasite plane" as they called it, a Bristol scout. The Scout was successfully launched from a Felixstowe "Baby" in flight several times. The Felix "Baby" had a third pusher propeller and engine in the middle, the radiator can be seen in the center part of the asking photo - should have been a giveaway but i admit the "quality" is very bad.
Unfortunately weight and ungainly manoeuvering led to some of them being shot down quickly, but one was able to taxi home swimming on the channel waters
The Felixstowe planes themselves have quite an interesting history. Curtiss had constructed some original prototypes, but they were almost impossible to fly and very unstable, as an english pilot complained to Curtiss. The contraption was then redesigned and successfully built numerous times in England (here called the Felixstowe), and it was them who finally ended the high-altitude Zeppelin attacks.
