Mig-21

Close enough, it is the Chengdu J-7 which was nothing more than a Chinese license-production copy of the Soviet-era Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 Fishbed.

@ Catfish: If you study my last photo closely you'll see that there's a thin plywood base encompassed by the paper. The dark brown material to which it is laminated is not particle board, not is it chipboard or MDF

A extremely strange item. And I wonder why I've never come across those in my entomology courses at university where "needle work" was a frequent task. We used simple styrofoam blocks.

I remember an incident from my freshman year: The first insect to pin down was a common cockroach: quite big, quite firm and if the student failed, a new one was always available from the department's own breed. The roaches were killed by deep freezing before the course. In that year the student assistant whose job was it to prepare the insects had taken them out of the fridge much too early. They were numbed, not dead. So when we came back from our lunch break we were saluted by a bunch of needled roaches flailing their legs in agony.

Catfish
07-29-20, 08:33 AM
Only in England ...
Well we did not have this at the preparation course at university either, we also did (dead) cockroaches and a few small moths.

So I never saw this before, how is this 'board' even called?

edit ah ok "Pin thru the insect onto the notch of the mounting board so it is not tilted and so that the wings will be flat to the spreading board. Make sure the insect doesn't move when positioning the wings Place paper over the wing ..."

From some kind of competitive game?

Eichhörnchen
07-29-20, 02:15 PM
Puh. Now there are some things Eichhörnchen has to explain...

Entomologists have used these since Victorian times (in England, anyway) and I only ever had the cork ones from Watkins & Doncaster... I used to live near their place in Kent

A special entomologigal (stainless, black) pin was inserted through the thorax, then into the groove of the setting board. The wings would then be coaxed down with strips of greaseproof paper and a pointed stylus (setting needle) and ordinary dressmakers pins used to secure them in the correct position (I always placed a drop of entomolgists' gum where the fore and hindwings overlap so that they wouldn't spring apart at a later date, creating an unsightly gap between the wings)

Then a tiny ball of cotton wool was placed under the abdomen using tweezers, to prevent it from drooping during drying. The antennae could be arranged at this point too, using pins to guide and keep them in place

After a couple of days all the pins and strips of paper could be removed and a label pushed onto the pin, detailing date and place of capture... very important, this

If a specimen had been kept too long before setting then various methods of "relaxing" would need to be undertaken; Victorian collectors would often put the rigid insect in a tin filled with crushed laurel leaves, which would soften the wing muscles. In more modern times a few drops of a special 'relaxing fluid' would go onto a pad of cotton wool placed in the bottom of the relaxing tin

Your detailed description brings back some memories: The position of the first needle, the method to position the wings, the extremities and the antennae: exactly the procedure we were taught. But we always used styrofoam (and cardboard when the dried specimens were transferred to the department's collection.). I just googled "setting boards" and it seems they are only available from English (and Australian) suppliers, so it must be a UK special.
