Buddahaid

I'm asking for what it is part of. As if it were the helm position of a ship and I want the ship name, or at least it's part of the blank from blank movie.

I'll expand the picture some in a bit but I think the clues will work pretty soon.

What is this? Obviously it is an aircraft of some sort so name it. Clues will be limited this time due to the pic I choose I feel that it shows unique features of this aircraft as it is if you are observant and seek. So you need to put your thinking cap on for this one.

Unlikely to be the TU-144. Too many windscreen panels over the nose:

Not an AN-22 though they do have a similar appearance at least in that one area. It is not a Valiant also not the Space Shuttle.

Alright then a few clues. This is not a Russian or British design. This aircraft is powered by piston engines.(that means if you guess C-130 you are dead wrong those use turboprops:D)

The Valentia's are gone. XPT power cars were originally powered by a Paxman Valenta 12RP200L engine with a single turbocharger. These were replaced from June 2000 by Paxman VP185 12-cylinder, diesel electric engines with four low-pressure turbochargers and two high-pressure turbochargers boasting 1,492 kW / 2,000 horsepower that had been successfully used by some British Rail High Speed Trains since 1994. Traction equipment was manufactured in England by Brush Traction of Loughborough.

Oberon
09-09-14, 09:20 PM
Ah, so you've got the same as us, that's a shame, the Valentas had a hell of a scream to them when run at full throttle. Having a Valenta HST going through a platform at full tilt just as you're getting off a train on the other side of the platform is quite a jump scare. :haha:

I do not think so the Chinese did not get into modern type high speed trains until the 90's. My guess the German ICE entered service in the late 80's. Oberon said that the ICE was a development of his train. So you can eliminate anything developed from the late 80's on up. Reading the posts will help you guess just saying.

i think your image was cropped somewhere between the barrel and the hut roof

Nope not a gun but you are spot on about the cropping...when you see the picture in full you will realise it was the only cropping possibility that wouldn't give the game away.

Wing spar locator? is it from a Bucaneer?

Not a wing spar locator and there is no part of a Bucaneer on view but you are barking up the right tree.

Is it the scanner on an AWACS aircraft?

AWACS weren't in the RAF inventory at the time as far as I am aware.

Second last clue...they are part of a British military aircraft in the making.

Remember the original question:

What are these? and for what purpose are they being used?

I'm enjoying this, got a few of you buggas thinking :)

Eichhörnchen

If you're not absolutely sure whether or not AWACS was used by the UK at this time then that suggests it was maybe the 60's, when RAF aircraft tended to be natural metal or white overall. If it was nonetheless military then the green colour would suggest instead an Army aircraft, which would most likely then make it a helicopter, which would then suggest that the top part is a rotor blade...

You take me too literally.....I was referring to the current AWAC of which I have been aboard two...they are No8 Sqn based at RAF Waddington and became operational in 1991 iirc.

Prior to those we had the Shackleton but I digress...my apologies.

The time era is not the 60's and the picture is not a rotor blade.

I know the picture is of little help but when I post it in full it will be obvious there was no other way of cropping it without giving everything away.

The picture is of two aircraft fitted with for testing purposes a certain part of the plane that will replace the testing aircraft.

What are these? and for what purpose are they being used?

Aktungbby
09-15-14, 02:02 AM
A winner and well done BETANOV! close enough: the actual order "splice the mainbrace" actually meant...Splice the mainbrace-during action!!! the massive rigging to move the yards being essential to the operation of a sailing ship and aimed at specifically in the age of sail. HMS Victory, for example, which lost two masts and her steering at Trafalgar was in tough straits. Since this was very hazardous under fire, an extra 'tot' would be issued to those adept with a marlinspike reweaving the thick rope under fire... And to the fleet after a successful engagement. Ultimately, sails long gone, the expression was limited to the imbibing of the tot. My post is the 'dead giveaway'...including the sig: ie Lord Nelson, so the legend goes, was placed in a cask of refined spirits...and the tars drank the contents of the cask- "tapping the admiral to splice the mainbrace" Naturally when the extra grog order was to the whole fleet the flag signal was hoisted. The 'tot' was discontinued on a daily basis in 1970 http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0163/4514/products/splice-the-mainbrance_cf4384c3-7d50-4785-9946-6901507dfd2f_medium.jpg?v=1386014832 The signal flags-Now available from Pusser's (purser)"Nelson's Blood" Rum $39.95.
