Aktungbby
09-11-15, 10:24 AM
I also looked at the agriculture stuff but completely missed John Deere. :damn: Oddly, he solved the commonest problem of the farmer; a plow that would readily shed the soil it was tilling. A cast iron plow, itself a remarkable invention, wouldn't cut it on thick prairie sod; a steel one would. Deere came to the conclusion that a plow made out of highly polished steel and a correctly shaped moldboard (the self-scouring steel plow) would be better able to handle the soil conditions of the prairie, especially its sticky clay. Abraham Lincoln, raised and indentured on hardscrabble farms in his youth, used the common expression for the problem after reading his short speech at Gettysburg to commemorate the battlefield. On the platform after the 1863 speech, Lincoln allegedly remarked to his secretary Ward Hill Lamon, "Lamon, that speech won't scour ! (as with a plow) It is a flat failure and the people are disappointed." Lincoln had signed into being the first Homestead Act of 1862, Anyone who had never taken up arms against the U.S. government (including freed slaves and women), was 21 years or older, or the head of a family, could file an application to claim a federal land grant. There was also a residency requirement...tree planting was encouraged!?? That plow would be a lifesaver in North Dakota: cutting the sod for many a 'soddie' before unrelenting winter set in. The act and the plow would 'scour' the plains of native Americans! Norwegian 'preppers' ND 1898> https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0a/Hultstrand61.jpg https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/87/Dugout_home2.jpg/220px-Dugout_home2.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dugout_home2.jpg) Betonov would have fit right in! This whole 'dugout' style house looks like a Dakota fire pit:D
Betonov
09-11-15, 10:35 AM
His most important invention was a polished steel plow on which the prerie clay soul did not stick, unlike it's predecessor the cast iron plow.
And as I come to notice half the worlds soil is clay.
And I believe that was his only invention and he marketed it succesefully.
My next hint would have been: check the ''forum regulars bios...'' thread :03:

I knew I'd seen him in William Manchester's The Arms of Krupp Founder Alfred Krupp Indeed, unable to sell his steel cannon, Krupp gave it to the King of Prussia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_William_IV_of_Prussia), who used it as a decorative piece. The king's brother Wilhelm (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilhelm_I,_German_Emperor), however, realized the significance of the innovation. After he became regent in 1859, Prussia bought its first 312 steel cannon from Krupp, which became the main arms manufacturer for the Prussian military.

This Flying Pancake must have been quite a good plane, from evading wing tip vortices to stall characteristics .. only idea why it was not produced might be the speed ?
They had trouble with the prop drive mainly as I understand it.
Are we trying to identify your next photo?

@Bhuddaid: " ....Plus those odd controls speak for some specialized purpose other than transport. " .... Yes. "Russian ?" No, US as answered to Aktung.

Hehe yes, that's one of the most weird constructions i ever did see (and i'm german :O:)
Maybe faster than Willy's ground-only version, but only 'downhill' gliding. No own in-flight propulsion .. basically like the ****e-Achgelis 'Bachstelze' towed by the U-boats.
Congrats Aktungbby , your turn then.

Because the Censorbot thought, wrongly, that you had used a naughty English word, which is similar to the German word ****er. See? It did it to me, too:D
That thing was basically a towed autogyro (like the Achgelis last time) where the freewheeling, rotating blades provide lift just through the forward motion of the thing. Funnily enough, my neighbour and I watched an autogyro swooping around over the farmland near our house last week: the first one I'd ever seen, but I knew exactly what it was and impressed him with my expertise.
