Domus Aurea in Rome?

Catfish
03-14-19, 05:39 AM
Domus Aurea in Rome?
Yes, we have a winner!

The photo was taken in one of the two round dome (or 'cupola'?) rooms of the house, both having a round open roof window ('oculus') at its highest point, just like at the Pantheon, which was built using the experience gathered here.
The room is said to have served for dining on a slow turning base (the 'rotating room'), though no one has found any material that could have served for evidence.

The Domus Aurea can only be visited when accompanied by guides/archeologists, and it is not secure at times, especially after heavy rains. Helped by EU funds, international archeologists and the city of Rome, there are a lot of efforts trying to stabilize and drain the complex, but a big part has not been excavated yet, if it ever happens.

It was one house with a dimension of 30 hectares, and later Cesars and coming generations built on it, partially destroying it, Hadrian using it as a fundament for his gigantic roman thermal bath. When Nero died, the "Golden house" was used for storing material, cattle, and horses, until coming generations tried to erase the memory of Nero, along with all he built, or had to do with him.

The ruins were accidentally rediscovered in the 19th century, when some unsuspecting shepherd fell into an opening hole in the ground, witnessing strange paintings on what have must been a hall now filled with debris. Since he found them in this 'grotto' (cave), those paintings were later called 'grotesques'.

Some sketches and animations showing the sheer size of the whole thing:
https://www.realmofhistory.com/2016/03/21/animation-shows-3d-domus-aurea-golden-house/
https://www.romewise.com/domus-aurea.html

A lot more could be sayed about Nero, who seems not to have been the gruesome tyrant we were made to believe by christian 'sources'. Also he was not present when the great fire started, destroying a good part of Rome. Instead he immediately returned, helped to fight the fires and opened his houses and parks for the public, providing food and water for years to come.
So no singing to the lyra looking at the burning Rome as depicted by Hollywood.. sorry Mr. Ustinov.

EDIT (after previous post): I guess not

Catfish

No airship gondola, it really is a plane.

If you turn it around 180° it looks like a gondola, yes, but i did not rotate the original picture and the plane is 'upright'.

Jimbuna

^ I reckon so :yep:

Catfish
03-19-19, 02:34 PM
Dowly has it, yes the Supermarine Nighthawk, built to hunt high-flying Zeppelins but being barely able to take off. Maybe the developers thought it a good idea to put a fourth wing on it for a faster ascend and intercept, but with all this drag and undersized engines this was not a good idea. It would no climb very high, and a Zeppelin would have been able to just run away. One of the prototypes crashed, and the project was abandoned in 1917.

When a Mr. Mitchell joined the Supermarine company in 1917, he sure had a look at this Nighthawk, and obviously learned from it.. with the design of the S.6B (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarine_S.6B) he brought the Schneider trophy to England, in 1931. Based on this racing plane he later developed an even better plane, the iconic 'Spitfire'.

Here is some history about the 'Nighthawk' with some nice photos, despite the somehow unfitting name ('motorpunk'):
