Something to do with NFL ?
Markusin answer to your question, as asked...:hmmm::shifty::roll::hmm2::know: ultimately, in the long run in a Darwinian concept, I'd have to say yes.

surely U mean Ash Tuesday? big hint: it's not calcio storica...Bingo! Jimbuna takes it:salute: The guy who scores(H.Hind) gets his name on the ball. I do apologise for confusing Shrove Tuesday with Ash Wednesday: the two days the game
is played on ; as for being played on the Western Front: In early 1916, 1/6th Battalion was stationed a few miles west of Arras. Battalion HQ was at Ivergny and the troops were billeted at Sus-St-Leger, where four Companies of the battalion played the game in the main street (la Grande Rue) on Shrove Tuesday, 7th March; (Ashbourne News, 10 March 1916). In Ashbourne and northern France it had been snowing heavily the day before. Lieutenant-Colonel G D Goodman started the game (‘turned up’) by throwing the ball into the crowd of hundreds of soldiers. The two sides then locked in a ‘hug’, the scrum-like formation that naturally forms as the Up'ards and Down'ards battled for the ball along the street, watched by the French inhabitants. Private Jack H Robinson of C Company scored the first goal. (Thereafter, he kept the cherished ball in his pack, and survived the war). My viewpoint is looking south along la Grande Rue (D59), and some of these buildings are still standing.
A few months later, the 46th Division was one of the assaulting divisions at the opening of the Battle of the Somme, and suffered heavy casualties in the first few hours of 1st July 1916.
This painting was commissioned by the Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football committee in the centenary year of the Battle of the Somme to commemorate the playing of the game by the soldiers of Derbyshire on Shrove Tuesday, 1916. The ball is preserved in Ashbourne by the descendants of Jack Robinson.https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/picture.php?albumid=815&pictureid=12454< talk 'bout bein' a little "over the top" duck:Kaleun_Salute:

First flown as a prototype then? 1942 is really the first year of the US/Japan Pacific war and all war in the south, and southwest, Pacific areas, so early in the war fits.
