is played on ; as for being played on the Western Front: In early 1916, 1/6th Battalion was stationed a few miles west of Arras. Battalion HQ was at Ivergny and the troops were billeted at Sus-St-Leger, where four Companies of the battalion played the game in the main street (la Grande Rue) on Shrove Tuesday, 7th March; (Ashbourne News, 10 March 1916). In Ashbourne and northern France it had been snowing heavily the day before. Lieutenant-Colonel G D Goodman started the game (‘turned up’) by throwing the ball into the crowd of hundreds of soldiers. The two sides then locked in a ‘hug’, the scrum-like formation that naturally forms as the Up'ards and Down'ards battled for the ball along the street, watched by the French inhabitants. Private Jack H Robinson of C Company scored the first goal. (Thereafter, he kept the cherished ball in his pack, and survived the war). First flown as a prototype then? 1942 is really the first year of the US/Japan Pacific war and all war in the south, and southwest, Pacific areas, so early in the war fits.
