If you know it why not say it? Germany built so much planes of all kinds already before the war, not all info has been passed on due to later.. circumstances :hmmm:

There was a civilian experimental predecessor which looked (and was) much different. This plane on the photo was designed for military purposes right from the beginning, while using data and some technology gathered from its ancestor made by the same company; this experimental plane was much less successful though and never made it into a series.

Catfish
04-08-19, 02:54 AM
^^ Yep, good job Buddahaid. Well done to move on due to the time gap

The predecessor had been the one-engined Ju F 49 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junkers_Ju_49).
When Prof. Junkers was sacked and put out of control of his own company by the Nazis, they immediately began trying to build a high altitude bomber being able to fly at at least 15500 meters altitude for observation and bombing. Without Junkers they unfortunately had no successor that would have been able to construct it..

The nose should have been made of plastic for better visibility, but it was not possible yet to build such a big structure for the first prototype, so they used the kind of pressurized 'tank' for the crew they already used in the F 49 with small bulleyes. Flying and landing was difficult due to the bad visibility.

The second prototype then did have a two-hulled plexiglas structure, which was heated with hot air in the space between by the engines, to prevent icing and keep it transparent at very high altitude.

But this is the coat of arms of Franz Ritter v. Hipper, also the one of WW II heavy cruiser »Admiral Hipper« (the one that survived the brave »Glowworm«, and whose Captain Hellmuth Heye reported the fate of the Glowworm and Commander Gerard Roope via the red cross to the british admiralty). You are correct Mr. Squirrel. And right on time . Playoffs start tonight.

It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise. And named after an English chap, one Lord Stanley of Preston who donated it as a challenge cup for Canada's best amateur hockey club, but in 1909, it became contested by professional teams exclusively. There are 3,177 names engraved on it but not all are on the cup used for display and awarded to the champions. Every 13 years one of the bands is removed to make way for new names. That band is then stored in a vault at the Hockey Hall Of Fame along with the original cup.

Incitatus made a Consul by his owner Caligula.

Eisenwurst
04-11-19, 07:23 AM
Absolutely. :Kaleun_Applaud:

Caligula had a short reign as Emperor - 37 to 41 AD. But he threw some fabulous parties and squandered an entire empire's wealth on self indulgence.

( I'm following the script - official histories now ). He set the standard for future mad emperors - Caracalla, Elagabalus, Commodus....

He had great contempt for the ruling class ( himself excepted of course ) and expressed it by making his horse Incitatus a Senator and possibly a Consul ( Prime Minister ). Could Incitatus's spirit still live on in some of our current lot of pollies?????

Anyway, Caligula made a lot of enemies and when the time was right they struck, killing him and his entire family, plunging Rome into a familiar pattern of anarchy.

Was he that bad??? There's not many near contemporary sources left, and they read like modern day tabloid women's magazines, you know the ones that publish all the trash about the Royal Family. ( Why they don't sue I don't know ).

In a future age will they be regarded as the true history of our times???

After looking up the meaning of vehicle, I see that my answer there was incorrect and misleading. My mistake. The reason I said it was not a vehicle is that some objects that 'transports people or goods and can move through any medium' are never refered to as a vehicle. A submarine is an example of that. Robert Graves?

Robert "von Ranke" Graves it is
(related to Leopold von Ranke, a german historian)

His house is in Deija on Mallorca, and he lived there until 1985.
The destroyer seen on the photo is the HMS Grenville, with which he left Mallorca when the spanish civil war was about to swap over to the islands. The Grenville also helped to evacuate a lot of others, one of them being Albert 'Vigoleis' Thelen (a german writer who helped to transcribe and translate Graves' "I, Claudius"), to leave the island when Franco's kill commandos started to search the island and things got ugly.

In his initial autobiography "Goodbye to all that" he wrote quite open about what happened in WW1, from rumours of shooting prisoners of war, to class society extending to the trenches, about a gas attack gone wrong, and when a friend pleaded for armistice with Germany he helped him to evade court martial claiming he had a shell shock.
Despite being patriotic himself and despising the german invasion of Belgium he was critical about the war, and when he wrote his autobiography and then chose to leave England to live abroad, some seem to have.. misunderstood him.

Very interesting. Today of course people could say the things Graves said and it would hardly cause a stir. Very brave of him to do so. Only those who were there could know the true horror of trench warfare in WW1.

I am currently experencing internet and Imgur problems. If someone would like to go that would be great. Or you could go again.:salute:
