Aussie tom Gaze?Tony Gaze, the first Australian to drive in the Formula One World Championship and one of the oldest surviving drivers, has died at the age of 93.

Gaze, who served with the RAF in World War Two and was awarded the DFC, was instrumental in the opening of Goodwood as a racetrack. In the course of a conversation with the Duke of Richmond he mentioned the perimeter roads of the Westhampnett aerodrome, which was built on land belonging to the Duke, would make a very good racing circuit. The Duke ran a car round the road, concluded Gaze was right and Goodwood opened in 1948.

After the war Gaze returned to Australia and started hillclimb racing, returning to England in 1949 after he married. In 1951 he bought a Alta Formula 2 car and started racing, switching to an HWM-Alta in 1952.

That year he competed in a number of non-championship events as well as four championship grands prix but he only managed one finish, on his debut at Spa.

He continued to race in various formats - surviving a major crash in 1953 when he was thrown clear of his Aston Martin as it caught fire - and in 1955 set up his own team, the Kangaroo Stable, to help up-and-coming Australians. But the venture was short-lived and closed within a year.

As his racing commitments died down he turned his attention to gliding, representing Australia in the world gliding championships. In later years he returned to Australia

Buddahaid

All i can say that this lower part obviously is one part/half of the prop. The upper part looks somehow different, maybe it is obstructed by some other part(?) – not sure. It is a two bladed prop anyway.

Some hints: Not a Wright flyer. Not a bomber.

Not quite certain. This is a pre-ww1-war model, it even made a (short-lived) record. One photo comment suggests it has been used in the war in the Balkans(?), but the inventor gave up airplane production in 1914.

So rather pre-war i'd say.

Yep you are right, the early birds had some similarities to the Wright's models, and the prop looks alike.
A monoplane it is, though not a Hans Grade one.

Catfish
04-26-22, 01:51 AM
ailerons or wingwarping?
Replicas of this bird mostly have ailerons, but it is not easily to see on the old bad photographs. There were different types that may have had a different design, also there was the initial experimental, civilian and military type. But they look alike somehow; in the early days of aviation there was no real serial production.

It is said that the "Militaertyp" already had ailerons, other souces say it was still warped.
You do not have to specify the exact type, name of the inventor (which also is the plane's name) is enough.

Hint: monoplanes are called Eindecker in german. I take it one can only see the lower half of the prop because the view at the upper part is obstructed by a relatively high-building engine.

Not a Fokker of any kind. Also Anthony Fokker was dutch, not german. The allies did not want to pay Fokker to construct planes for them, so he asked Germany.
Igo Etrich designed Taube? He sold out his aircraft production company in 1914...:hmmm:
Time would be about right, but it is not an Etrich or Rumpler Taube. Rumpler b.t.w. was an a$$hole as he simply copied the origonal Etrich Taube plane and sold it under his Rumpler name, making Igo Etrich go bankrupt. Since there was no real patent held by Etrich, a lot of other aircraft producers built taube planes with all kinds of developments or changes, one was even completely made of steel ("Stahltaube"). This is not a T. of any kind.
Oh yeah, that makes sense.
A bit, but a Taube looks different.
EGADS! A plaudit from the continuum's better half!:O: proof I don't need Aricept...yet:hmmm::timeout::shucks:
Maybe not but it still is not a Taube :D
Yes, but I still haven't found a match in photo searching which is worrying.
You will find no Taube photo matching :03:

Big hints: The photo is supposedly taken from one of the "Militaertyp" planes, maybe during the war, in the eastern front theater, or (if before the war) at least in the east.
As said before the war, the civilian version made a record flight. A lot of german planes did at that time, but this was a distance record.

Gustaff Basser set a duration record in a Rumpler... not a distance record:hmmm:
A world's record for a duration flight was made today at the aerodrome here by Gustav Basser, holding wreath a German airman. He remained in the air for 18 hours and 10 minutes. His company, Harlan-Flugzeugwerke GmbH at Johannisthal airfield, produced the Harlan monoplane, which was built in several versions until 1911.
