Catfish
06-08-20, 02:16 PM
Yep Jim, this is it.

I have a bit of a weak spot for Junkers since my father got his apprenticeship at Junkers, Dessau, and kept working for said company, from development to surveying test flights already long before the war. He was devastated when professor Junkers was sacked, also he had quite some problems due to a jewish girl friend. OT here.

It is indeed the Junkers 388 L, designed for extreme range recconnaissance and high altitude flight, equipped with tons of what you call radar (called "FunkMess"~="radio measuring", in german) equipment.
They already had a landing procedure depending on radio beacons guiding the plane down to the landing strip, in the Ju 88A and other planes, from navigational aids to radio-guided blind landing, something that only became standard after the war.
"The radio equipment consisted of FuG 10 with TZG 10 and ZG 16, Peil G6, FuBl 2 F, FuG 101 A, FuG 25 a, FuG 16 ZY, FuG 217 and FuG 130."
(Some details on german "radar" or better FunkMess can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftwaffe_radio_equipment_of_World_War_II

Which means the 388's crew was able to "see" targets and incoming enemies quite early at night or poor visibilty, while still having a payload of 3 tons for bombs, camera equipment or more fuel.
It was still able to reach a speed of 425 Miles per Hour, which made it a suited night hunting plane against the bomber streams and the dreaded DH Mosquitoes, without help of Würzburg or Himmelbett ground radar.
It had a remote-control rear gun turret and two 131 MGs under the belly, also lots of camera equipment and said Funkmess transmitters and detectors.

https://i.imgur.com/C0fRW7Rl.jpg

This is the last existing Junkers 388 L (for "Langstrecke"~long range), stored in parts at the Smithsonian, today. It was found in Germany and flown and transported to the US, for thorough examination.
As they say it was a delight to fly, with a very good-mooded flight behaviour and an incredible climb rate. It was also one of the fastest and highest-flying piston-engined planes of that size built in series.

The inner hull seen on the photo

https://i.imgur.com/haTOelFl.jpg
or here with description https://www.ju388.de/Inside.html

could only be visited on ground, during flight the crew of 3 to 5 was entirely sitting in the pressurized "Kampfkopf" capsule, for instant information exchange and psychological advantage (or so they thought).

The K and J version were intended to bomb (Kampf) or hunt (Jaeger) as night fighters, since the high altitude and speed was making them almost invulnerable. One 388 is said to be shot down over England at 42,000 feet by a special type of Spitfire, but i found nothing for evidence.

This is a good site for further information on the "L" type in the Smithsonian:
https://www.ju388.de/Ju388US.html

I think it is one of the most advanced and somehow beautiful plane of the german air force of the time, and well ahead of a lot of other designs. It insect-like stream-lined exterior was making it a good base for the coming jet engines, but of course it never came to that.

Over to Jim :salute:

Well a few days ago I read: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2020/06/19/india-is-buying-the-wrong-russian-warplane-for-fighting-china/#76828a351281 (https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2020/06/19/india-is-buying-the-wrong-russian-warplane-for-fighting-china/#76828a351281) Which acquainted me with Chinese latest 5th generation aircraft. Then, following Catfish's lead "Chinese"; I Earthlinked "chinese stealth fighter" which brought up site #1:
Chengdu J-20 - Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-20)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-20 - 315k - 12 hours ago - similar pages (http://search.earthlink.net/search/track?id=1010742&vars=area,q,style&url=/search&area=earthlink-ws&style=&q=related:https%3A%2F%2Fen.wikipedia.org%2Fwiki%2F Chengdu_J-20)
The Chengdu J-20 also known as Mighty Dragon, is a single-seat, twinjet, all- weather, stealth, fifth-generation fighter aircraft developed by China's Chengdu ...
and voilà!...complete with picture as posted above. BOTTOM LINE: good reads, good hint, and dumb luck!:yeah: Here's another foto: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/96/J-20s.jpg/800px-J-20s.jpg

Problem is, I will be out of town until 7/5/2020, and I won't be able to answer anyone's questions.

So, I am asking you if you can take my turn and use the image I posted and answer the questions that are related to my picture.

The above is a little background on what the picture is.

It is an F2H-Banshee that landed on the wrong carrier. It is from the carrier USS Coral Sea and it landed on the USS Wasp.

Here is the original picture:

I first thought of a Grumman F9F Panther and "The Bridges of Toko Ri", but the rear canopy did not fit. Then i saw that in the film they were flying with Banshees as exchange or vice versa(?), so i was not entirely wrong and the rear canopy fitted the photo. Next i looked for "McDonnell Banshees" and "chalk" :yep:

I guess it was sheer luck you could not partake this time :03:

BENDIX K MODELhttps://www.helis.com/h/bendix_k.jpgVincent Bendix became famous in automotive fields for inventing an automobile starter motor drive and after that, the four wheel automotive brake system. From there he went to manufacturing aircraft instruments and by 1936, he had become very rich and was sponsoring air races and competitions. Originated in 1931,the Bendix Trophy became a highly honored award for aviation excellence. Jimmie Doolittle won the first Bendix race and trophy for his transcontinental flight from California to the Cleveland Air Races at a speed of 223 miles per hour. Other winners for the cross-country flight were such famous aviation figures as Louise Thaden and Jacqueline Cochran.

I thought my detail cut was a bit misleading, because it only showed ONE part of the two rotors :hmmm:

There have been other double-rotor models by Bendix, but none made it to serial production. The Russians however still build their 'copters that way, an older example being called the "Helix" by Nato:

A clever idea, yo do not need a rear rotor to keep the aircraft from spinning, and you have double lift..
