Catfish
03-16-21, 05:21 PM
Not panettone, also not bread.
It is a kind of cake, or better cookie or pastry.. quite common in Germany around Christmas season. Such machines as depicted are usually not used anymore, it all switched to automated bigger ones decades ago.
Further hint: Probably originating in Russia, but often Belgium is said to have invented it, or maybe some germans did at the same time. It is also famous in the Netherlands..
When I saw the picture Catfish posted I got a Deja vu from my first job in a bakery.
End of the 90's
I tell you the machine we used had same colour, same shape.
Yes he had some very old machinery
I said to myself it looks like a machine who makes breadcrumbs from old dried White bread
It also looked like a machine which I have forgot the Danish/Swedish name and therefore unable to translate into English.
On top(the oblong funnel) was filled with flour.
The closest word I can come up with is
fully automatic sliding table
Then Catfish wrote only used at Christmas-so it can't be that either.
If I by any chance should have hit the nail-Then PLEASE give the ball to some others.

@Aktungbby: Not 'Pepernoten' (this would be "Pfeffernüsse" in german = literally "peppernuts", but called "spice nuts" in english).
There are some spices involved.. i wonder whether this kind of cake or biscuit is even known over there :hmmm:. It can be also made at home by hand, but you need some 'tools' - naming them will probably give it away, so...

Speculoos in english, but I had never heard this before. In Germany it's Spekulatius, coming from latin speculator for Mirror*.
Those Spekulatius cakes were initially made for St Nicholas day on december 6th, and different forms told the story of said bishop.
Since St. Nicholas from Myra in Asia minor is said to leave his later home in Spain and come to Europe on that day, to give presents to good people and punish the bad ones, he was said to be a *mirror of human behaviour.
Later there were other forms, an often used one is indeed the windmill, but there are lots of others.
Here is the machine from another angle, it is only to form several thin cakes at once, they have then to be pulled off the cloth carefully (breaking easily in this condition), and then baked in an oven.
They can be made with or without almonds, also the spices used can vary, but there's always caramelised sugar used.

Not a "WW1 vessel", it was built before, but not for WW1. A civilian ship built for trade. "In a way" later "confiscated" by England, which also changed the ship's name. It later became property of another nation. Regarding what i said no real combat mission in WWII, I just read it was probably used for small troop transports in that time.
Even in WW1 you could hardly call this a combat mission, the ship was never intended for war, and it became soon clear that it was also not exactly known for positive "sea"-going properties either. Not that it saw much of the sea (hint, hint)
@ d@rk51d3, as you already concluded not the »Krait«, and the ship in question has never been near Singapore.

Still sailing over Lake Tanganjika after 108 years today, thanks to belgian and british efforts to refloat and repair it.
When Tanzania became independent, the ship became property of the new nation, using it until today.
https://i.imgur.com/9yU5wQ5l.jpg
I will keep this short since it can all be read in the 'net, not to mention books and films, one of it being "African Queen". The real queen was of course the Graf..
Built in 1913 as a merchant for the Tanganjika lake to do trade with english and belgian colonies, it was put together at the Meyer wharft Papenburg for a test, dismantled, and then transported in some 5000 boxes via ships to Daressalaam, then German East Africa. From there it was transported via train to Kigoma, the german harbour at the Tanganjika lake.
Since England had declared war and the parts for the dock were not expected to get through, they put the ship together on a wooden frame, and then dug away the earth under it, opening it to the lake, and the ship finally swimming up.
The captain and the engineers from Papenburg were not amused to find out that war broke out, also they were "a bit disenchanted" by the ship's "sea"going capabilities. It would roll in anything but calm weather due to the high center of gravity, and shallow draft.
(because of this english engineers later mounted two bilge keels, and exchanged the old steam engines with Diesel ones).
When England declared war it was at first not sure whether this would extend to the colonies, because initially there was a treaty that should keep the fighting off the colonies, main reason being not to show the locals that there colonial masters were not much better than their own tribes, going to war against each other.
The only "combat" missions were to get back a small german steamer (»Adjutant«) that had been captured by England before, and another small english steamer sunk. The Graf Goetzen stealthily sailed to the hostile harbour by night, attached a rope to the english ship and towed it away, then sinking it. No one was wounded or killed.
They tried to mount some of the sunk »SMS Koenigsberg« guns, fired three shots and the deck buckled. So they kept the guns' shields on the ship, gave the guns to Lettow-Vorbeck to be mounted on wheels, and mounted some painted palm tree trunks as "guns". Two smaller revolver cannons were left on the ship.
Most photos of the "armed" »Graf« show it with the palm tree sticks.
Being attacked by small boats like Mimi and Toutou (an incredible story itself getting those boats to the lake by Mr. Spicer-Simpson) and belgian 'Short admiralty' seaplanes it did not suffer damage; but when Lettow-Vorbeck had to withdraw he ordered the ship to be sunk, so it would not fall in enemy's hands.
The Meyer wharft chief engineer throughly conservated and greased engines and valves, and opened the flood valves; intending to refloat it after the war.
When the war was over Germany lost its colonies, and a belgian engineer tried to refloat the Goetzen, which promptly sank again twice, after storms. Finally in 1927 when England made the area its own colony, the ship was raised and out into service. Later it became property of the young independent nation of Tanzania, serving as a merchant between Ruanda and Burundi.
It was repaired numerous times adnd is still afloat. The Meyer wharft even proposed to overhaul it thoroughly, but most of the money seems to have vanished in some local warlords' pockets.
Lot more to be said but .. it's all on the web

The force was with you, the AGO C.I (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AGO_C.I) from june 1915 it is  Nice photo :O:
AGO being the abbreviation for "Apparatebau GmbH Oschersleben", "Aerowerke Gustav Otto" and later "Aktiengesllschaft Gustav Otto", and then again renamed to "Gustav Otto Flugmaschinenwerke".
When they went bankrupt in 1916, it was merged with the "Rapp Motorenwerke" (Rapp had constructed the high altitude engine for the Fokker D.VII) to become the "Bayerische Flugzeugwerke AG (BFW), which again later became BMW.
Big hint is the second hull of the forked tail visible at the left, otherwise the undercarriage indeed hints to another pusher configuration like Voisin, Bréguet or Farman – but d@rk51d3 was not distracted and Aktungbby named the exact type!
