I don't foresee any election surprises in my home town.
It has been a Labour seat since 1935, but challengers are hoping to pull off a shock result in South Shields.
Voters are choosing a successor to David Miliband after the former Foreign Secretary stepped down from the seat last month.
People in the town have returned a Labour MP for the past 19 general elections, most recently with a majority of 11,000.

Well Cameron and Clegg will simply repeat what any government say in mid term regarding the usual backlash against current policies and I'm yet to be convinced any of the parties have the answer to our current problems.
The choice (in the broadest terms) as I see it is a continuation of the current austerity measures and benefits reforms which will impact mostly on the poorest or a return to big borrowing and eventual bankruptcy.

I can see a challenge to his party leader position before the next election if there is no improvement in public opinion regarding the policies he supports.
The numbers have been crunched and Toff Boy is back in power, the Labour vote was down on the last County Council election. And it seems the hard line Con/Lab/Lib voters stayed at home along with those who only vote at a general election.
I would be more interested in next years council elections as this will cover more of the country & I believe there is a EU election as well which should see UKIP vote up next year.

The biggest Tory defector yet:
The former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Lawson, has called for the UK to leave the European Union.
Writing in the Times, he said British economic gains from an exit "would substantially outweigh the costs".
He predicted any changes achieved by David Cameron's attempts to renegotiate the terms of the UK's relations with the EU would be "inconsequential".
But Downing Street said the prime minister remained "confident" that his strategy "will deliver results".
Mr Cameron is facing calls to bring forward a promised referendum on the UK's EU membership.

Labour voters shift their views on welfare claimants - to the right
Pressure on Labour to adopt a tougher stance on welfare has increased after new research showed that the party’s own supporters are less sympathetic towards benefit claimants.
While the public became more sympathetic towards people in poverty during the recessions of the 1990s and late 2000s, attitudes towards claimants hardened. The change was caused by a shift amongst Labour supporters, whose views moved much closer towards people who vote Conservative

That's not their doing, nor the Tories, for the failing justice system. Only recently a driver who killed a cyclist 25 years ago, and again another cyclist more recently, got just 300 hours community service.
At the end of the day they lied, not kill someone, not rob a bank, or kidnap someone, lied. I'm sure we've all lied, even sometimes to the police. I'd rather the case was dropped with just slapped wrists and not cost the taxpaying public a small fortune for a display of 'justice' (or just desserts).

MPs Reject Tory EU Referendum Amendment
More than 100 MPs expressed their regret tonight at the Government's decision not to include an EU referendum Bill in its new legislative programme.
The 130 MPs backed an amendment to the Queen's Speech, tabled by Tory Eurosceptics John Baron and Peter Bone, in a House of Commons vote.
Mr Baron's amendment was signed by 92 MPs, mostly Conservative Eurosceptics. But, despite the support, it was defeated by 277 votes to 130, majority 147.

Under the plan, the Treasury has committed £3.5bn of shared equity loans to housebuyers and billions more under a new “mortgage guarantee” that moves some default risk on as much as £130bn of new lending from the banks to the taxpayer.
The Chancellor hailed it as a “dramatic intervention to get our housing market moving” by helping buyers lacking large deposits onto the housing ladder. However, economists have warned that it risks inflating another unsustainable property bubble and repeating the US error of subsidising sub-prime lending.

Building Societies are warning of the danger of a house price bubble, unless the government takes action.

Councils face a 10% cut in the funding they get from central government as part of the coalition's spending plans for 2015/16, the BBC has been told.
Sources say Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles has accepted in principle that the £21bn budget could be reduced by this amount.

A 10% cut isn't really much.
Though of course if you take the 10% cut and then factor in the huge expenditure increases councils now have to budget for due to benefit reforms it is a bloody massive cut.
I think Westminster Council forecast that the "savings" on housing are going to cause a 60% increase in expenditure for them.

How many people are out after midnight, and actually need the street lights? Could keep them on a bit later on Friday and Saturday night for the party crowd. A good way to save the electricity bill, and then not have to make savings elsewhere. Also means that street lights do not shine into bedroom windows all night and disturbing peoples sleep.
I have often thought it would be cheaper to pay for each house in a street to have a town hall sponsored solar panels so that natural energy can be collected and used in the community. I think they are developing small solar panels for street lights.

Nigel Farage admits offshore tax 'mistake'
UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage said he "felt uncomfortable" about setting up a trust fund in the Isle of Man but insisted he did not avoid or evade tax.
The MEP told the BBC that he opened the fund in 2003 to reduce his family's inheritance tax bills but quickly realised that he had made an "error".
Such funds were no longer appropriate for politicians, he suggested.
The Conservatives said that Mr Farage had "questions to answer".
