During the Scottish referendum, someone took a photo of Alex Salmond looking through the window of the FLYING SCOTSMAN, with the first letter hidden by the tunnel, so it looked like LYING SCOTSMAN. Now that his successor, Nicola Sturgeon, makes her speeches behind a sign saying STRONGER FOR SCOTLAND, could someone watch out for her covering the first two letters with her hand and take a photo of that. Because then it would say RONGER FOR SCOTLAND.

The Prime Minister has issued a stark warning that the world could be heading for a second economic crash because of "a dangerous backdrop of instability" fuelled by conflicts, Ebola and stalled trade talks.

Not sure if I'll even bother voting this year. Our candidate and me didn't actually see eye to eye prior to my retirement.

It is a bit of the devil and the deep blue sea, but any vote against UKIP is a vote well spent.

Well....

UKIP did it but there is a good chance the Tories will retake the seat come the general election. UKIP's majority dose not make it strong enough and taking into account a number of voters voted for them will switch back to the Tories.

UKIP clearly took votes from the main three and once again how many of those votes were protest votes?

I have a nasty feeling the run up to the general election is going to very dirty. There are too many factors at play here for example labour is facing a wipe out in Scotland, the liberals are also going to loose more seats and finally how many seats will UKIP get? A lot can happen in the run up to next year.

Labour's Emily Thornberry quits over 'snobby' tweet

First of all this is a load of rubbish, resign over a silly tweet what rot. And secondly she was sacked as it stick out a mile and not for the first time a government front bencher/opposition front bencher is given the push. This just shows the main three party's up in a bad light and how out of touch they are.

English nationalism has always been subsumed into British nationalism, up until recently they were one and the same for many people. This is beginning to change, but English nationalism has something of a "bad rep" in comparison with it's Irish, Welsh or Scottish equivalents.

Ask any foreigner their opinion (assuming they know the difference) of the different nationalities in the UK and England normally doesn't fare too well, at least in my experience over the years. This is after working or socialising with Poles, Bulgarians, Romanians, Russians, Lithuanians, a Turk, Nigerians, a Ghanaian, Indians, Pakistanis, Chinese, an Iranian, a South African, a Finn, Norwegians and even a few Americans. Most of them were/are students or work in the oil industry.

UKIP will not form a coalition with any of the main three and in turn none of them would form a coalition with UKIP. This is the short answer to the question..If the UK has another Hung Parliament after the 2015 general election would UKIP form a coalition with the conservatives or Labour.

I read a friends recent email he sent to UKIP head office and that was there answer.

I suggest to anyone ask the man himself via email, letter or the phone or your local pub if hes there. Or so put the same question to the main three party's as well.

"Democracy Rocks" for Nicola Sturgeon as she appears before 12,000 people at Glasgow's Hydro arena:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-30157986

I did like the joke about the Lib Dem conference being held at Dunfermline:

'The new SNP leader said she was pretty sure her event had beaten the Lib Dems on numbers but she had heard that "the phone box they are holding it in is pretty full".':har:

Sturgeon also called for 'a "progressive alliance" with parties such as Plaid Cymru in Wales and the Green party in England to change the Westminster system.'

In related news, the Radical Independence Campaign has made a "People's Vow" at it's own gathering:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-30151363

The People's Vow

The People's Budget - mapping the alternative to austerity
Ending fracking before it takes hold
Land for all - Put our natural resources in the hands of the people
Equality not as an afterthought
Democracy before profit - Work with other forces across Europe and the US to stop the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership

Both groups not only want Trident removed from Scotland, but also full blown nuclear disarmament for the UK. Sturgeon's said already that part of the price of SNP co-operation with Labour at Westminster would be scrapping Trident and Cat Boyd, Co-Founder of RIC want's Trident not only gone from Scotland, but gone completely from the UK:

"......we want to embark on a campaign of civil disobedience against Trident. People don't want Trident in Scottish waters and they don't want it in anybody else's either,"

On the surface at least, the rise of UKIP is pulling England off to the political right, whilst the SNP is pulling Scotland to the left.

At this rate, I don't think the UK will survive....:hmmm:

Clegg rules out coalition with Ukip

Nick Clegg has ruled out ever joining a coalition government alongside Ukip, saying it had been "difficult enough" finding common ground with the Tories.

https://uk.news.yahoo.com/clegg-rules-coalition-ukip-163901512.html#bpIqgAe

So if we face a simular result with UKIP in play the Liberals will say no. So who would they support? Clegg is on record for saying as long as Ed is leader of the labour party he will not side with them and even the green party is out the running..He also took a shot at the "anti-everything" Green Party

Clegg is backing his party into a corner but why? Who knows but he is facing a big reduction in MP's and the on going voting collapse.

An unhappy consequence of how our political leaders get into the position.

University - party aide or researcher - parachuted into "safe" seat by party.

Did the local Labour Party in Ed's constituency get a choice, or was he foisted upon them?:hmmm:

The same question applies to Cameron and Clegg.

Meanwhile, "Irn Broon" has unleashed his "Thumping Fist" at the SNP:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-30256101

TBH, I agree with his fundamental point. Holyrood's getting more powers, now it's time for the SNP to man up and take full responsibility for it's choices.

I'm getting fed up with the constant "it's all Westminster fault!", "it's not Devo-Max" (as defined by the SNP), "it's not what the Scottish people want!" (again as defined by the SNP), etc, etc, etc.

Yep, the words "lamb" and "slaughter" come to mind. The only Westminster seat that the Lib-Dems are expected to hold is the Orkney/Shetland one. Danny Alexander could survive in Inverness and Nairn, but there is a question mark with that as Inverness City itself was apparently a majority Yes vote in September. It was just outvoted by the rest of the Highland Council area.:hmmm: Menzies (Ming the Merciless) Campbell is retiring as well as Sir Malcolm Bruce, so that's two LD constituencies where there won't any "incumbency" factor, which helps Salmond in the latter's constituency. As for Charles Kennedy... if he gets re-elected it'll be a miracle, full stop!:haha:

Ms McVey said it was not a question of older workers taking the place of younger employees.

They are taking the jobs, that is to say taking the low paid boring jobs. I was speaking to a over 50's guy on a supermarket checkout the other day who worked in many roles from the law to a manager. Not one middle to high end employer wanted him they viewed him over the hill, so it had to go down market. I could see this guy was not happy doing this job, he is still applying to what he wants without luck.

I have seen more and more 50 plus working in supermarkets high street shops and DIY Shops and none of them look happy in their roles. And any how I don't trust what that bitch states first a general election on the way and second their idea of help is placing these people on silly level 1 courses like how to do a CV. Sounds to me more unemployment figure manipulation to me.

Just before posting the above I read the article and....

The trial, to be launched in April, will include training in CV and interview skills, the internet and social media, as well as "career reviews" with an expert to identify skills from previous work and any training needs.

I rest my case, oh wait a minute they are made to this now!

Over 50 and your considered over the hill?

Pfft.:hmph:

If your past 30 your over the hill as far as a lot of employers are concerned. What they want are people in their early 20's who can be paid less than an older worker as they don't have the experience of the latter. They're also more easily manipulated as they don't know their rights and do anything that's asked of them because they don't know any better. Thus undermining the employment laws in place to protect them from such abuses.

Not all, of course, but far too many.:/\\!!

In the Supermarket where I work over 85% of the staff are under the age of 25, including most of the Team Leaders and a few of the Managers. As a result basic standards have slipped compered with when I joined 15 years ago. At 35, I'm now considered too old for promotion as I've acquired too many "bad habits" i.e, I'm actually trained to a higher standard than is currently required. Although considering all the corporate gobbledy gook you have to spout now and the crud shift patterns, I don't particularly wish to go higher these days.

I do agree once your in your 40's your over the hill and every bout of being out of work for me has lasted longer than the last bout. So this crap about they can not use age discrimination against you is pure 100% Bull. Why are people over 35 years of age advised by the JC's to remove their D.O.B off their CV's if there is no discrimination?

We will see how this new leader turns it around, if he can.
In my constituency Malcolm Bruce is stepping down, I think Alex Salmond wants to run for MP for it. Will be interesting to see how that goes. For the record I voted No, not because I don't believe that Scotland could be independent but that the numbers didn't add up vis a vis what the SNP and Yes were saying could be delivered. With oil dropping 50% in the past couple of months and me working in the oil industry things are a bit twitchy, but given they think the oil price could remain at this level for 18 months, it has shown that a hole has been busted in what the SNP were presenting as their budget under independence, they would have a massive hole to fill.

Though saying that in Scotland I think the SNP and the Greens will win the day, and although I don't agree with all their policies they could have a moderating effect if they get a decent number of seats in Westminster. SNP do appear to be more social minded than either of the main parties.

However although I don't like David Cameron, I don't subscribe either to rabid blaming everything on the Tories, and harking back to how Thatcher screwed everything up. It seems Labour and the unions did a good job of that in the 70s. But what I'm saying is that's in the past and I think it does no good to keep looking back and blaming others. But this is what British politics has become from both politicians and voters alike. Oh and can I say, that coming up with witty names - very droll.

The problem up here is the general political sentiment in the western side of the Central Belt. No offence intended to the people from there on the forum, but the apparently unquestioning faith in Socialism and the residual "Red Clydeside" tendency do the area no favours at all.

If you want to have a "Big State", fine, but you have to be able to pay for it. The catch is that in Scotland the middle class and very wealthy make up too small a proportion of the population to provide the taxation to support one. Nor can you rely on the oil industry to provide revenue as recent events have shown. If the SNP were going to be truthful, they should have said that Scotland would have to cut it's coat according to the cloth on hand. That means a smaller State Sector and they'll have to drive investment to build up a private sector that's way too small. Far to many people in Scotland work for the State. That can't be supported with the revenue stream that's currently available and I think the SNP knows it, hence the demands for the economic levers to be devolved. Finally, IMHO, the Barnett formula needs to replaced with a needs based system.

The big problem is that Socialism fundamentally doesn't work in practice. It can't overcome basic human nature and that's where it fails. I think more than a few of the SNP's new found supporters in Glasgow's housing projects are going to be very disappointed when they find out the party's not going to able to deliver the Socialist State they'd like.:hmmm:

Lastly, going back to the poll, what I'd like to see now is a fully federalised UK. That means full devolution for England, Scotland and Wales (Northern Ireland will depend on it's internal dynamics) all with equal powers with the House of Commons converted to become England's Parliament. The House of Lords should be abolished and replaced with a National Assembly with EQUAL representation for all four constituents, not based on population share, and all levels elected by proportional representation. Likewise there should be more devolution at a local level in each country, thus eliminating the over centralisation of power at Westminster, Cardiff and Edinburgh. Whilst we're at it, I think it's time for a written Constitution as well.

If the UK is to have any chance of surviving, things need to change, BIG TIME.

My 2p,

Mike.

I suppose it depends how you define socialism. If how the Nordic nations have it then it seems to work pretty well if the statistics on quality of life are to be believed. If you mean how the left wind in Glasgow and other areas of Britain believe it should be then yes it is. Did you know MGR that of business/corporation taxes raised in Scotland for which Aberdeen/Aberdeenshire raise the most, half of what is raised here goes to Glasgow. How's that fair? I think the reason that more than 50% in Glasgow voted for independence is they did think that they'd get a socialist utopia where they'd continue to live on state handouts. I know that is a generalisation but not far from the truth. You can go back and forth for days as to why Glasgow's industry declined but the unions didn't want to modernise and thus we stopped being competitive. I'm not saying we couldn't build good quality ships, but when you can get the same quality for less in other shipyards and I'm not talking about Asian, but European yards then why go to the Clyde.

We as a nation have become so hung up on what it means to be British, English, Scottish etc that we have lost our way.

No disagreement from me! I'd rather more of the money raised in the North East stayed in the North East and was used to help communities here. Glasgow would be better off attempting to support itself, rather than relying on transfer payments from elsewhere. However, since Glasgow City Council has all the characteristics of the Soviet Politburo I can't see that happening anytime soon.

It's good to see that he learnt such a strong ethical awareness when he studied at Eton College, registered charity number 1139086.

It would appear that Jim Murphy (the new Scottish Labour leader) is an idiot:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-30699821

Evidently the subtleties of devolution have evaded him. This new "Mansion Tax" will be raised under Westminster's auspices, not Holyrood's. An increase in taxation would lead to an increase in public funding in England directly, and Scotland indirectly via the Barnett formula.

However, how the increased funding would be distributed in Scotland would be decided by the Scottish Government, of which Murphy is not a part. He's not even an MSP.

Yet.

He would also have to win the 2016 Scottish Election to become First Minister before he could act on his promise of recruiting 1000 extra nurses for the Scottish NHS. Given current polling, Scottish Labour are bit unlikely to win that election. Murphy may not even retain his Westminster seat in May. If he does, it's possibly on a reduced majority. It's not even guaranteed he'll to be elected to Holyrood either.

All he's managed to do is give the two Ed's a major headache and probably cost them votes in London. I bet their regretting letting him run for the leadership. Not that there was a great selection to choose from.

All it does is guarantee that the "England subsidises Scotland" riff will continue, fueling resentment down south. Not that it really needs any encouragement at the moment.

The big question will be if it actually has any effect on Labour's Glasgow/Clydebank heartland's. I'd like to believe even the die hard Socialists in Glasgow aren't that gullible.:hmmm:

Couldn't agree more :yep:

Broadcasters should "empty-chair" David Cameron if he refuses to take part in the general election TV leaders' debates, Ed Miliband has said.

Mr Miliband told the BBC: "I think it is pretty disreputable that David Cameron went into the 2010 election saying that these debates were the most important thing that we could possibly have and people shouldn't make feeble excuses to get out of them, and he is doing precisely that.
