Say what you want about the stock game's AI, this guy actually made me very nervous and had me near sweating, it was challenging.
Stock? You're playing STOCK???

SH5 has stupid stock AI. The complaint about SH3 stock has always been the laser-guided depth charges and psychic destroyers. Stock SH3 is much harder than it should be, not easier. :dead:

Stock? You're playing STOCK???

Well, it's a modded stock, mostly the environment with a few changes to the visual settings in the sensors and config files to compensate, some graphics, skins, and waterstream and exhaust effects.

SH5 has stupid stock AI. The complaint about SH3 stock has always been the laser-guided depth charges and psychic destroyers. Stock SH3 is much harder than it should be, not easier. :dead:Really? :o I always thought it was supposed to be easier. I don't find the stock game that tough, especially in the early years. I figured, since it was 1943, that DE spotted me with radar or visually, and had a veteran crew, which is why I couldn't shake him as easily as others. When I use the external cam to see what is going on around my boat, I see DCs going off above, below, near and far from me, nothing seems laser-guided except my torpedoes, which I would like to mod to build some inaccuracies into them.

I don't know why you're having the experience you are, but I do know that one of the first mods for SH3 was one that made the depth charges have historical values. The stock version has a kill zone roughly three times the size of real depth charges, if I'm remembering correctly. GWX and NYGM both have the same adjustment. I'm not sure about the others.

@Sailor Steve

Sorry, I couldn't get back right away. I had an important appointment at the hospital.

I like the experience. I don't believe I am that good at avoiding them, so I checked the relevant files in the library folder to see if a mod may have changed them but they are the originals dated 2004 and 2005. Their large zones probably explains why I always get deck gun, flak gun, conning tower, and deck damage a lot, I do die when the DCs are close enough or if I do something stupid.

Thanks for the info on those changes, I'm going to check them out and see about modding them in, but I don't want to make it to easy. :DL

Talking about stupid decisions, look what i found while i was being depth charged near Dunkirk by about 5 destroyers. I ended up dead after two hours being attacked by heavy flooding, i use Thomsen no instant death screen mod so i could watch the horrible ending.

A tramp steamer is spotted later in the afternoon. Weather is perfect. From periscope depth, U-8 fires two torpedoes, 1 Magnetic pistol, 1 Impact, just to make sure. Type II's dont have a deck gun so no easy "coup de grace" in case she's a tough nut

Hydrophones spot another merchant. Plotted course, brought boat at a 90 degrees at 800m BUT she's NORWEGIAN a freaking neutral. My trigger happy WO urges me to shoot as she is blackened and just 30 miles of the East coast of England, but I my conscious prevails and we let her go.

Watch Officer is fuming and to let some steam off, he orders Bernard to sweep the floor of the engine rooms with a toothbrush. Thankfully 2 hours later the next contact is not a neutral. Its a Polish Large Merchant heading towards Hartlepool. WO forgets all about bernard and insists he calculates the solution. I agree. Two torpedoes did the trick once again. WO insists we surface so he can sing his lucky rodeo tune to celebrate the success. I oblige

After an uneventful patrol at AN49, the grid assigned by the BdU, Gunter Geiser, the Kaleun of U-22, a Type II Uboat from the 1st Flotilla decides to have a look at Lerwick. 10 Km out of the Lerwick, U-22 evades two destroyers patrolling but there is another one right on the mouth of the harbour. Geiser decides that entering the port is one thing, but getting out afterwards is another. So he decides to sneak towards the destroyer and attack , before making a run for it

Having left Kiel and with the Skaggerag behind us, U22's Kaleun orders the radioman to sent a status report, before we sail into enemy waters. All set for another exciting patrol and with little luck we 'll come back at base with some tonnage and in one piece

Our assigned patrol grid, AN 48, is pretty much void of traffic. So after 24 hours we decide to lurk outside Hartlepool

U22's sonar man reports a contact in the dead of the night. Merchant, medium speed , closing. When U22's Kaleun asked the sailor if that picture pinned on the hull was his girlfriend the reply was "I wish"

Conducted experiments in single ship engagements. This one was the mutually destructive duel between DKM Kormoran vs. HMAS Sydney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_between_HMAS_Sydney_and_German_auxiliary_cr uiser_Kormoran).

Experiment was run 3 times. Kormoran modeled by the Living Silent Hunter 3 commerce raider, mounted with 15cm guns from Rowi58's DKM Emden. Sydney modeled by The Frog's Perth class cruiser. As per the actual engagement, the Sydney was positioned off of the Kormoran's starboard ~1300 meters away.

Result: 2 out of 3 times, the Kormoran sank the Sydney without suffering fatal damage. The old German 15cm guns turned slightly faster than Sydney's double 6 inch mounts and so were able to fire first.

On the first trial, it took two hits (one below each "A" and "B" turrets) to sink the cruiser. The Sydney suffered a catastrophic explosion shortly thereafter. Only four 4 inch rounds fired; all missed.

On the second trial, a 4 inch round disabled Kormoran's aft casemated 15cm. The raider thus damaged, she was unable to inflict as much damage to Sydney as before. Both got off one more salvo on each other and suffered catastrophic explosions before sinking.

On the third trial, one 4 inch shell hit the Kormoran above the waterline. 6 inch salvo from Sydney missed. Cruiser sunk after 3 shots below the waterline, 2 on turrets.

Outcome of the first duel:
http://i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab303/MissingName/Raider_and_Cruiser.jpg

Also, the Kormoran is not at all immune to torpedoes. Quite the opposite.

There was a Norwegian destroyer of that name captured by Germany after the invasion of 1940.

I'd also be interested to know but it may be a hypothetical scenario.

rowi58
04-11-12, 10:14 AM
Okay my friends,

here is the solution: "Odin" is a supply ship scripted into the "Campaign_SCR.mis" since the days of LSH3 Version 2.0 "Paukenschlag" of Dec. 2005. "Odin" original was placed into a Greenland fjord, in LSH3 Version 3.0 ff (and CCoM too) it is also hidden in a field of 8 icebergs.

You can "dock" at this ship in two ways:
- like you do in a normal, foreign harbour or
- in Stiebler's way, if you are using h.sie's Patch V16xxx

Very proud of this - patrolling off of South Africa, March 1943 - nothing but atrocious weather. My radar and sonar men are working overtime. And after only picking off one small merchant in the high seas, decided to use the weather to my advantage.

Snuck into Capetown - and very happy to find a C2 and this tanker. Point blank shots are lovely things when you're unseen.

September 1939. U-53 "10 of Clubs" is leaving port. War with Britain had been declared 4 days ago and the U-boat is assigned to patrol BF 16. Not a bad patrol Grid. Still early in the war, so the Kaleun will dare cross the Channel

http://img215.imageshack.us/img215/2930/10ofclubs.png (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/215/10ofclubs.png/)

Uploaded with ImageShack.us (http://imageshack.us)

Weather is OK, patrols on the Channel are not yet thick enough and U-53 reaches BF 16. Tower Watch spots a British Coastal Freighter. Weather does not permit the use of the deck gun, but an old, trustworthy TI torpedo does the trick

After 2 uneventful days, sonarman detects a Merchant coming our way. We position our boat for a night surface attack. Its a British Large Merchant. Oh, i love these Happy Times

1 eel from the aft and some rounds of the 88' prove more than enough

BF16 yields nothing more, so we decide to patrol BF 13. And on the 4th day tower watch spots a British Medium Tanker. Weather is Brilliant. Two TI eels and some 15 88' shots from the deck gun. Pretty Stubborn

You can "dock" at this ship in two ways:
- like you do in a normal, foreign harbour or
- in Stiebler's way, if you are using h.sie's Patch V16xxx

Greetings
rowi58

Dont you have to rename the supply ships "U"---- before you can dock stieblers way? At least i thought thats how it read in the instructions.

So if you dock on the Odin stieblers way, you only get aboyut 25% of your fuel, a couple torps, and a little bit a damage repair correct???

If you can, can you tell me how to dock stieblers way correctly?

Göring's excuse:

"The Luftwaffe is a precision force: they are guaranteed to hit the surface of the earth with every bomb they drop. Ergo, the Sperrbrecher must have been:

a) in the wrong place at the wrong time for the Kriegsmarine is full of incompetence (just look at how many torpedoes that Prien fellow needed to sink a single ship at anchorage back in '39!!)

or else,

b) its crew were traitors to the cause attempting to desert.

Either way, the Reich is thankfully rid of them. Now pass me some morphine!"
