There's always something profoundly sad about the subs lined up for "Deadlight". Almost as if you're watching living things die. Even though, of course, the end of the war was something to be grateful for.

I think it's a "Type XXIII" boat. They were built late in the war and saw little action, although there is a playable mod for them kicking around somewhere.

Yes, it's most certainly a XXIII (http://uboat.net/types/xxiii.htm). They are modeled in GWX but not playable. They make the ducks look like ocean-going subs.

Be advised, using this mod means the XXIII replaces the XXI in your game.

Sorry to have to ask,but this thread has grown so large now the chances of finding any information on this will be slim at best.

Also,is it normal to see slight (not too bad) graphic and colour changes from the originals when using viewers like Irfanview?,which I have to say is a fine program I have realised!.

The Torpedo Data Computer or TDC: This diabolical contraption, responsible for the tracking of targets and the guidance of torpeoes to said targets, was also capable of staggering mathematical feats. It could do long division in minutes and multiply several columns of numbers in under an hour and was only technologically inferior to the computer that powered Hitler's robotic battle armor.

Wilhem "Willy" Wonke, Chief engineer of U-36. An aspiring singer, Wonke had plans to persue a career in the opera after the war. Sadly, this did not come to pass as Wonke would later be transferred to the cursed U-666 which was lost with all hands while on a top secret mission to Greenland.

A stylized tulip with red stem and green bulb adorned the conning tower of U-36. The boat's crew were nicknamed "Der Ausschuss Kinder" due to the crew being composed mainly of underperforming naval academy grads and derelicts with disciplinary issues. Nevertheless, U-36 would make history.

Well spotted sir....the aft funnel was where the passengers pets were located/kennelled and also served to house some engine room and kitchen uptakes IIRC.

Kitchen exhaust, engine room ventilation exhaust (separate from boiler exhaust), the kennel, and unrefrigerated kitchen storage. Depending on the class of the passenger the dogs would either be walked out on the promenade deck, in the halls in steerage, or not at all. That ship was a neat piece of work.

My newest career (let's hope this on lasts) had me sitting around for two weeks. On September 3 (as we all know) Britain declared war on the fatherland. Usually when I do this I wait around for many days before seeing a ship. This time a small 4000-tonner turned up just a few hours after we recieved notice that we were at war. It may be the very first sinking of the war - in my little universe anyway.

One torpedo under the forward cargo hold (we somehow ended up directly in front of him ).

It is one of the MFM ships, with the MFM skin pack controlled by SH3 Commander's date function.

BTW: The torpedoes were TIII's using impact pistol set at 2.5 depth. The run was just inside their range limit. The weather was Clear, No Precept, Unlimited Vis, 0 wind from 326. I barely broke the surface with the scope to avoid being spotted by the destroyer in the picture as it returned to the convoy from a sweep to the side. I was far enough away that it never came close to finding me.

Well it works to get rid of the cannons on enemy merchants. But i tried everything to get the Tonnage for that ship. But as i said it is unsinkable. Flak was my last bit of ammunition. :shifty: 1800 rounds Flak ammunition i had , 5 Torpedos , and everything from the gun. But it won't sink.

If you have realistic sinking time on it can take a while.

A small Freighter i think.

I have realistic sinking time on. But even many hours later it wasn't sunk. So i returned to Brest.

You have to shoot it yourself, but yes, flak rounds will add up and sink things.

Same story as the deck gun? aim for the waterline?

Yes, but i destroyed the flak guns of the ship first. :salute:

The most efficient way of usung the deckgun to effect a sinking (conditions allowing of course) is to aim just below the waterline and puncture each compartment....the flooding will do the rest but the time taken will be dependant on number of holes and size of ship.

Shooting at the cargo whilst causing a reduction in the damage points system and causing fires which will further debilitate the vessels chances of survival will take a great deal longer.

Was firing on a bit under the waterline but it won't sink ;) also it had alread 4 holes in the bottom from the Torpedos which detonated right under it and on with direct impact. :03:

Gnah, i think someone sabotaged my Torpedos :hmmm: Again a unsinkable Sam, two hits of Falke Torpedos. It doesn't even had screws anymore and a big hole but still floating along. I watied for hours until i saw smoke on the horizont. Destroyers in-bound!! :stare: Also i wonder the other U-Boat aces doesn't get more tonnage, maybe they were sunk? :hmmm:

Sunk or promoted and sent to safe desk jobs.

The Germans suffered a huge propaganda loss in losing their U-boat newsreel stars Kretschmer, Prien and Schepke in just a few days in 1941 and wanted to make sure their U-boat commander heroes would not meet a hero's death and the consequent nasty question for the Propaganda department: "how do we inform the nation that our U-boat hero has been sunk with all hands on board?" Therefore after 1941 commanders were promoted and sent to much safer leading and training assignments, if they got famous.

(A good reason for a war weary submarine commander to be aggressive too: "If I manage to sunk one fat tanker more, I might get a promotion and a ticket to safety".)

You must have hurt Dönitz's feeling pretty bad at one point or another:)

On a more serious note SH3Commander simulates this thing. It follows your career, sunk ships, patrol days, patrol numbers - and then ends your career and sends you to a nice desk job and a comfy chair.

With SH3 there is also the boat career option. You can retire your commander and keep the boat with all it's accessories and veteran crewmen. Only the commander changes - which basically means, you lose all your nice medals and all that tonnage you've accumulated and get a name change and your rank drops back to a measly Leutnant zur see.

Your crewmen will look at you as a new green recruit and continuously compare you to the old commander. What's even worse is that the ladies in Berlin won't recognize you from the newsreel films and you don't have the Knight's Cross hanging about - so there's a risk your leave in Berlin is more lonely womenwise.:wah:

(I'm now beginning to wonder why I retire my careers, when SH3Commander tells me to. Sometimes it might be good to disobey orders...)
