This is the RMS Empress of Britain and you have a IXB with an 10,5 cm deck gun.

If you plan to attack with gunfire then Gargamel and Missing Name would love to be in your shoes!

Good luck!

Why do I get lumped in with MN's crazy gun tactics? Just cause I found them interesting, like a scientist to a chimpanzee, doesn't mean I too eat the bananas.

No, I seem to be alone in choice of tactics: suicidal blitz cannon rush.

Although if I were to have actually pulled it off in war, I'd have some sort of nickname like "Mad Hatter."

hello Rowi,

these planes have ,allready, been imported to sh3 long time ago (more than a year ago) by Chinese-U47 .U-47 is saying that these units are made by ''UBI BA2'' (?) and not by ''SOM-Group''(?). is ''UBI BA2'' and ''SOM-Group'' the same team ?

have a look at his thread here : [REL]SH3 Warship Mod V3.0 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=157060)

at post 3 , you can see the ''Messerschmitt Me 262A'' (pics 1,3,4,5,6) and the ''Gotha Go 229 B'' (pics 19 and 20) (notice ,also, that they have their turbine's fire smokes)

have a look at his mod Rowi ! this guy has done an amazing huge (and VERY GOOD) job for sh3 .if you 'dig' in his mod you can find many other planes that,i am sure, you will be very interested .
have a look ,also, at the ships ! a very big variaty of ships in there ! (allready contains ''Leander'' or ''Arethusa'')

anyway ,definetely ,it is one of the most interesting mods for sh3 ....must look at it !

Hi privateer and makman94,

i don't know who made the models - i've got them (as mentioned) from the "Great_War_pt1_MOD" of the "SOM-Group". And in this "Group", there are many famous modders like "VAA" and "Denis_429" and so on. So i'm sure i can trust them - more than others!

Thanks privateer for your information . Best as ever. Just a hint for you: a first - i think the realy first one - ship was converted from SH5 to SH3. Don't know if the modder(s) was using your tool (no "ReadMe" embedded). Just cklick here:

If you go back to #8496 you will see she was originally part of a convoy but an eel to her aft end put her engines out of commission and the convoy sailed on leaving her easy prey.

So I just started playing SH3. Going out on my fourth patrol, and to make it a short one, I use SH3 Commander to assign myself a grid closeby. Right in the middle of the North Sea (AN45 I believe). I know, not usually the busiest area but I'm thinking what the heck, maybe I'm lucky and I run in to a lone freighter.
Then my hydrophone goes apesh*t and I see this....

http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/5514/omgwtfw.jpg

Is a convoy this size normal?? I mean those were about 40 ships. I didn't even know what to do with it, since it is only my fourth patrol and I have the VII type u-boat, I'm thinking I don't stand a chance.
One hell of a sight in external view in the moonlight though...

Early war there were convoys between Norway and England. Even though it was a short hop, it was right on Germany's front porch.

VII's are fine against convoys. Quick and manueverable, with a decent punch. Read up on the recent convoy tactic threads to learn some tips.

Sometimes I wonder if the save game CTD bug was intentional on the devs part.... forcing us to play more DiD style.

I'm not sure if I would have had the restraint to let that other one get away. I might have gone full bore to get to it, then dove like a madman.

Moored at the repair facility in Wilhelmshaven for repair work after a battle with four Royal Navy Destroyers. On 3 Sep '39, Leipzig on station in the North Sea commenced anti commerce action off of the Northeastern coast of England. By 5 Sep. she had sunk 35,000 GRT of Merchant shipping and set course for home, low on ammunition. In the early morning of 6 Sep she was intercepted by a task force of four RN Destroyers. Despite being low on ammunition Leipzig fought off the attackers, sending all four to the bottom. She sustained heavy damage in the fight, and was not ready for duty until February 1940.

One time on a 54 day trip on a VIIB was 130 km out from St. Nazaire and got the message from the CE , "We're out of diesel fuel sir!". When I consulted the navigator I still had enough fuel for a a little less than 1000km; the gauge was nearly touching the bottom when I finally coasted into port but made still made it. Looks like you had maybe only 25 or 50 lbs of fuel left when you finally made it home.

Some pretty juicy task forces you've managed to find, since the start of the war have only seen 2 flat tops at all so far. 1 I managed to sink after shooting down all its pesky swordfish planes, other I watched go right past me after leaving Gibraltor with 0 torpedoes left. Despite sink the Nelson and Hood flat tops are like a bug going towards a light; once you see it you go after it no matter what the cost.

AI type VIIC attack convoy with gunfire at the same I was attacking submerged with torpedoes. There were also an IXB and another VIIC on the scene. December 6 1940 grid BF13
http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/6301/aiwolfpackattack.jpg

It is a pity that AI Uboats can not launch torpedoes.
From the same attack: Black Swan escort exchanging gunfire with a VIIC type uboat.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/117/aiwolfpackattack1.jpg

The whole thing turned out as a blood bath for the Uboats. All AI subs (2xVIIC + 1xIXB) were sunk by the escorts. At least I escaped and sunk 3 ships from that convoy for 15000 tons.

This was the tactical situation during my escape run

That's what happens when BdU orders them to stay surfaced and only use their guns.

Good thing you didn't get the same orders (or at least had sense enough to disobey them).

I think that's his "stairway to heaven" GFX distortion he's mentioned before (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=180157), but it sure does look like shore or a sub net.

If it is deep water, it's still a pretty rare sight. I always hope for the huge death plunge like that when I sink something.

Deep water best I've seen is ~ 60 degree incline from a large ocean liner (the 25,000 ton one, not the other mammoth ones) from a 1 hit kill shot that had all the massive explosions and fireballs, normally am lucky to get anything above a 25 or 30 degrees.

The whole thing turned out as a blood bath for the Uboats. All AI subs (2xVIIC + 1xIXB) were sunk by the escorts. At least I escaped and sunk 3 ships from that convoy for 15000 tons.

I didn't. The AI U boats were already following the convoy.
It can happen in GWX. If you see a map contact representing a convoy ,it is a big square. If , instead of this square you see a big circle then this convoy is shadowed by one or more AI uboats. If you manage to intercept it and attack you will be in a similar tactical situation.

Aah the Rodney. Beautiful ship. Especially when she's trying to submerge like a u-boat :D
Two patrols back I was gonna have a go at the Mediterranean, sailing from Lorient. But (as usual) I didn't make it past Gibraltar. So many ships there and so easy to sneak into, and this time the Rodney was just sitting there.
So I took her down with two torpedoes.
Although it's more satisfying when you can take her down on open sea, sinking a battleship is always fun to watch.

Err.... I'm detecting hints of sarcasm, but the message isn't clear..... :hmmm:

That's not the rodney (Only 2 turrets, with 2 guns each, Rodney had 3 barrels per turret, and thats aft, the Rodney had no turrets aft), and they're both going in the same direction, so the overtaking vessel (If it is even doing that) would signal which side it wishes to pass on.

I'm not complaining. I think the the Kiel pens under construction is an awesome sight. I've just never seen it before, and I'm wondering what I did right.

Hi Sailor Steve,

you are playing WAC 4.1. If it is only WAC 4.1, it will work fine (don't know which additional MODs you have installed).

Just two seconds - and this ship will go to the deep fishes.

No, I'm not. I tried WAC briefly some time ago, and my computer couldn't handle it. I know this because I don't have those beautiful bridges over the Kiel Canal. I'm currently back to GWX with a new install, and the following mods.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/Silent%20Hunter%20Screenshots/JSGME.jpg?t=1300109542

So you can see why I'm confused. :-?

Well..the only mod can be the Aces Superpens...Other?

I use the Wilhelmshaven V6, and I have that stuff...

That was my thinking, but the readme says Aces' Superpens only affects St. Nazaire. If it does also change Kiel, great. Whatever it is, I'm just glad to see it.

No. I have several things in Commander, but no scenery mods. I also have many mods that I install directly, but none has ever done that before.

At 0304, after wasting two torpedoes on a passenger/cargo ship (1 dud, 1 miss) we finally score a hit.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a325/SailorSteve/Silent%20Hunter%20Screenshots/SH3Img14-3-2011_111656_296.jpg

Luckily one was all it took. The ship settles by the stern and sinks seventeed minutes later, leaving us with two torpedoes.

After a coincidence when TF was opposite course I could relieve some eels and the fleet became confused and reduced speed, and torps got a little spread, but I could at least get some nice catches, DD was unusually hesitant and confused.

You can shoot them down with enough holes. They then gently settle down to the water and expire.

You can shoot them down with enough holes. They then gently settle down to the water and expire. I have just come across them twice, and they slow right off, and appears to be unstable but it's good to know that they can "fall down" to the sea surface, after X number of shots or equivalent :hmmm:

With a target that big, could you use the deck gun? That would be fun...

And the airships wouldn't explode, since the US used helium instead of hydrogen.
