Nice ones Jim, but going back to Tarjaks shot below- that's a great rendering you've done there mate. I don't know exactly how you've done it but the results are impressive.
So how did you do it?!
Bent a bit of light here and there and made it into a pretty picture.:03:
The main picture was touched up and colour tweaked in picasa using a number of the tools in there. Can't remember the exact sequence, but just played with it until the shine on the water was right and the sky looked good.
Then started the hard yakka in Photoshop, cleaning up the edges and artefacts around the hull, adding some dodge and burn to accentuate certain areas of light and shade, adding some rust marks around the hull ports and then using smoke and splash brushes in various shades of white to be the wake and the water gushing out of the ports. They were done on a layer with low opacity (about 35% IIRC), to make them show the background image through the "painting".
Finished it all up with some lighting effects to darken the top left corner and give the whole thing a bit of sheen. All up took about 6 hours of work but not all at one sitting.
I normally have 3-4 images on the go at any one time and just go back and edit in parts as inspiration takes me.
Well you asked didn't you? :D

I see, so it was a marathon sitting. It would have to be! Great job though. The lighting effects really work well with that shot.
Thanks for the info. All I need now is 6 hours, probably in 3 minute increments unfortunately.
Cheers.

I didn't think sinking 2x T3 Tankers and damaging a T2 Tanker was that big of a deal... ;) After the convoy passed, I surfaced only to find the rear destroyer was still in the area. It was half sunk due to the storm (the bow was up in the air about 45 degrees while the stern was under water). I could see through binoculars that it was still alive and it's guns where starting to aim at me. I dived before it could get a shot at me and decided to just leave it to its fate with the sea. It's angle in the water would of made for a tricky torpedo attack anyway. I stayed under and traveled to the next grid and surfaced. Shortly after I got a warning of Aircraft Spotted at Long Range. Luckily I had my wits about me and decided not to deal with the aircraft in the heavy seas and just dived. About 10 min later while I was in the crew management screen putting my officers back in their bunks since I was done with the convoy attack, out of no where I hear over 20 explosions one after another which scared me (I thought my game was glitching out or something). I then noticed the bombers carpet bombing near by, none came close to me though... they were just spraying & praying. :)

I don't have my copy at present, but as I recall they participated in a wolfpack attack, were jumped by the destroyer, and after they surfaced they followed the convoy's trail, questioning survivors in lifeboats, but there was no coup-des-gras scene with men begging to be saved. Of course it's been a few years since I read it, but I recall remarking at the time that the scene in the movie seemed to be a substitute for the much harsher scene with the Spanish freighter near the end of the book.
It's right after the convoy attack. They come submerged across the burning tanker, fire one torpedo (not in the movie), surface, see the sailors jumping, are horrified, destroyer shows up, dive, wait until destroyer leaves, narrator goes bunking, awakens at the sound of gunfire, goes to sleep, KTB entry

Fascinating. I agree with the SH5 people that it looks so much better than SH3. I love SH4 just for its graphics.
That said, every time I see a screenshot like the one above I'm reminded that SH3 has its own special feel, one that may not be as technically realistic, but still shines in its own light. The closest I can come to a comparison is comparing the old '50s Superman series to more modern versions. The newer ones are shinier, but the classic is still a classic, and for a good reason. :sunny:

Following the torpedo i find out the destroyer hadn't run aground in shallow water, but was hung up in front of some netting

You don't recognise the genius. That's the Kriegsmarines famed sunrise camouflage. Extremly effective in summer between 0400 and 0430 and that's the best time for some serious fleet manouvers.
At any other time, it seriously sucks, but at the specified time, it's pure genius.

Thanks Kafka, another kind person. Not sure what you mean by environment. I play on a two year old HP lap top and a cheap one at that. In order to get those screen shots I had to crank the performance way down and the quality to the max on the video card. I made no other alterations. I'm not a modder or a Photoshop guy. Wish I was.
I think yours looks great. I love the rust at the top of the conning tower, very realistic. I think that the work you modders do is unbelievable. Keep up the great work.

What I mean for environment is if it is GWX 16k, Living Silent Hunter, MEP, SH5 water, OLC, or any thing that changes the game's environment colors, graphics, and water from the stock settings.
I just wanted to know because I am having a little difficulty trying to get the colors right when the skies are overcast and I wanted to compare the color settings with mine.
I think yours looks great. I love the rust at the top of the conning tower, very realistic. I think that the work you modders do is unbelievable. Keep up the great work. :up:Actually, that is the stock skin for the type VII that came with the game, I didn't create it. I put it in the screenshot to compare with yours. I think Anzacmick just modified the stock skin, the rust spots are in the same place.
I normally use one of Fubar's for the VIIC and one of evan82's for the VIIB.
Those are still awfully darn fine screenshots for a laptop, almost like a painting for a book.

02-03-12, 07:15 AM
Hi Kafka. I realized a while later what you meant by environment. I'm old and slow. I'm using the GWX 16k atmosphere. I started using it just recently and would not go back now. So much better I think, especially the clouds and the sun.
Funny, I never realized there was that much rust on the stock skin, but I haven't used one in a long time. There are so many good mod skins available it's hard to decide. There's still a lot I'd like to try.
Thanks again for the comments, it's very encouraging. :salute:

Exactly. It's fine to repost one picture on the next page to draw attention to it, but reposting five or six or more pictures right after they were posted wastes Neal's bandwidth and takes extra time to scroll through. What would happen if the next five people all reposted them over and over just so they could say "Nice shots, gentlemen"? It's silly, useless and annoying.

Yes, but how to script this ship into Kiel campaign?
fitzcarraldo
03-04-12, 06:56 AM
If you add this ship as "merchant" in the roster, as a ship of MFM, it will appear randomly in the campaign. Then, it will appear alone in the seas or as part of a convoy. If you can live with the Pamir in a convoy, no need of scripting with the ME.
Best regards.

Note: As Jimbuna, I have the Pamir scripted, but it sails in a fictional journey from Kiel to the Caribbean seas and return - 1939-1941.

Yes, but how to script this ship into Kiel campaign?
A quick guide using a simple route:
Open Mission Editor > File > Open Scripted Layer > Campaign_Scr
Zoom into Cuxhaven > Sea tab (right hand side) > Roster > German > drag MC Pamir to a little off the Cuxhaven harbour
A box will open, choose start and end time as well as heading and speed etc. (see my image).
Click on Accept > Left click ship icon to highlight then right click on Add Waypoint.
Left click the position of each waypoint and ensure your final waypoint completes the voyage > right click and choose Properties > choose loop to waypoint and select the number of your first waypoint then set loop probability to 100%.
You have now ordered a neverending voyage (within your start and finish dates) for the vessel.
Once you get the hang of this you can go on to create more intricate voyages with orders to return or dissapear at any point you wish.

Thanks to both you and VONHARRIS for that - I'm entirely too used to the 'PrtSc' button :P Still not always fast enough even then. Missed my favourite moment thus far. Fired a full spread of torps into a convoy, and an American ship panicked so much she hove out of line and rammed a tanker.
Off-topic, I know, but who doesn't love a game so good that AI captains make *errors* now and again?

Boompus' Gibralter thread (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=193097) inspired me to try the mission again. The last time was long ago when I first installed the game, I didn't get far then since I had no clue what I was doing.
This time I thought I would try to see how far I could make it on the surface at night since I didn't want to spend hours trying to creep through. I loaded the mission and laid course for the African coast of Spanish Morocco at ahead full. Avoiding two destroyers on the way I arrived as dusk was setting in. Hugging the shallow waters near the coast, I entered the strait when darkness fell.
http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/8446/shotgibraltermission01.jpg
It got quite shallow in a few places, eleven meters once. Many patrols came close but only twice did I have to dive to periscope depth to avoid them. I made it nearly half way when...
http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/604/shotgibraltermission01b.jpg
...I got ambushed by two MTBs that got close enough without being seen. Letting my crew duke it out with them I tried to make a dash for deeper water, weaving left and right to try and keep those speedy little demons within the deck gun's firing arc. It took about twenty shots, but three hits each finished them.
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/5320/shotgibraltermission02.jpg
It wasn't long before their big brothers showed up and were all over me worse than my cats when I open a can of tuna.
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/6681/shotgibraltermission03.jpg
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/9750/shotgibraltermission05b.jpg
I could only safely dive to forty five meters at that point, so it got pretty hairy. In the course of their hunt a couple of funny things happened to distract me.
This guy ran aground at full speed.
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/3301/shotgibraltermission04.jpg
And this fellow dropped a string nearly on top of me, stopped, backed up and the exploding depth charges blew off his DC Racks, maybe his propellers too, I didn't check. Wish I had gotten the shot when it happened.
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/6649/shotgibraltermission05.jpg
Hard turns and short bursts of flank speed finally allowed me to get away into deeper water with relatively minor damage and flooding, except for completely destroyed stern dive planes. The rest of the trip I crept.

La Spezia at last. Italy sure looks pretty.

And a small tribute to my Gunner, Stabbootsman Eckerman
He sent a Whale factory ship to the bottom with 30x88mm rounds from a distance of 4km!

Yeah, I guess it was kind of bold, come to think of it. I think I will try to find that 'Decks Awash' mod and try it again and see how far I get. It would be a feat to make it through without submerging fully.
Seeing that destroyer blow off its own DC Racks reminded me of a career I saved some shots from a few months back:
I was transferring my external torpedoes when I got interrupted by a River class DE traveling across my bow at full speed. Not wanting to submerge and start the transfer all over again, I thought I would risk it and stopped engines. He passed my bow at about 8000 meters without seeing me, but at a little over 9000 meters he turned and did a beeline straight for me. I dove and went at flank speed to get away from where I was and then went nearly doggo. He found me anyways.
Over two hours he circled me, making quick turns in, dumping a load on me, and moving out to circle again. No matter what depth (150 meters once) or what I did I couldn't seem to shake him. Say what you want about the stock game's AI, this guy actually made me very nervous and had me near sweating, it was challenging.
http://img825.imageshack.us/img825/5223/shothunted01.jpg
Finally when it appeared that I may have eluded him for a bit, I went to fifteen meters, popped the scope and fired a quick shot from my stern tube and dove again, hoping he didn't see me. The time passed when the torpedo should have hit so I went to the external cam to have a peak.
That's when I found out what the T4 Falke was for.
http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/9957/shothunted02.jpg
It followed the DE around, gained on it and blew its DC Racks and propellers off. A sigh of relief and an easy target after that.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/3018/shothunted03.jpg
And the hunt continues. I love going after convoys, the harder the better, that is why I start my careers in 1942 or 43.

Snuck into Hartlepool overnight, sank the lone destroyer, surfaced and used the deck gun on four ships in the harbour. By the time the inevitable response showed up, I'd sunk the ships, moved position and lay in wait rather than sneaking away.
Also, Fraps may be my only solution - I've got SHIII installed on a laptop (it's all I've got :P ) so the keyboard commands aren't working for me. Thanks again for the suggestions though, all.

Thanks Fubar, they are just cropped down from 1280 x 960 screen shots, I think teaching myself photography and doing a lot of it in the late 70's and early 80's kind of gave me a sense of composition. Long haired freak that I was, I actually learned something there that I still remember how to do. :DL
