Dan D. ??

Also known as Elanaiba....Kai has it.

I was going to mention we travelled to GW Bush airport together but couldn't have a planned pre-flight drink together because our flight destinations took us to different terminals, then realised even though the pictures are now missing from the threads regarding the Meet, the text remains.

Seriously surprised this one took so long to crack.

Over to you Kai :salute:

It was just a guess indeed.. I was not at the subsim meet in the US where the photo must have been from(?), but met him in Laboe near Kiel.

But maybe Markus should take the next one, he mentioned him in his post of four clues.

Well this looks for all the world as though painted by the great American artist N.C. Wyeth - so do I go with this and spend ages looking at his pictures online...

Was it painted by the great man?

Catfish
12-06-24, 01:34 PM
^ you already found the painter :up:

Now who's depicted on the painting?
Probable better known by our US colleagues

Hint: There was even an early film about him, but seems to be lost now.

Eichhörnchen
12-06-24, 01:38 PM
Well here's the painting - absolutely no description with the 2 images I found, however. But it looks as though this character is about to board or has come ashore from a paddle-steamer

https://i.imgur.com/IO4VZVs.jpeg Edit:- found him - he's Jim Bludsoe

Eichhörnchen
12-06-24, 01:47 PM
Well I haven't found much info so far as to Jim Bludsoe's claim to fame - other that he may have been a riverboat captain, either real or fictitious

Thanks, Vinny - our posts have crossed

https://i.imgur.com/IO4VZVs.jpeg Edit:- found him - he's Jim Bludsoe

That was FAST .. Yes it is Jim Bludsoe or Bludso who's depicted in the painting by N.C. Wyeth! :up:

He was an engineer on the paddle steamer Prairie Belle, which would never be surpassed but began to burn (possibly by boiler explosion due to a closed safety valve) when running against the paddle steamer Movastar.

The poem about the fate of Bludso and the Prairie Belle is from John Hay.
His poem was immediately popular and widely reprinted throughout the U.S. and England and was later included in the collection Pike County Ballads, the title referring to Hay's home county in Illinois, bordering the Mississippi River. His instant literary success put him on the same lyceum circuit with Mark Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Horace Greeley.

In his biography of Hay in 1933, Tyler Bennett says, "'Jim Bludso,' in the facile words of John Hay, is the voice of Abraham Lincoln, the kind of story he would have liked to tell, the kind of a moral he would have liked to point." (DP)

A remembrance to Theodor Fontane's John Maynard poem comes to mind, but Jim Bludso seems to have been hated by the evangelical forces that were and always will be in the US lol.

"He were n’t no saint,—them engineers
Is all pretty much alike,—
One wife in Natchez-under-the-Hill
And another one here, in Pike;
A keerless man in his talk was Jim,
And an awkward hand in a row,
But he never flunked, and he never lied,—
I reckon he never knowed how."

"And this was all the religion he had,—
To treat his engine well;
Never be passed on the river;
To mind the pilot’s bell;
And if ever the Prairie Belle took fire,—
A thousand times he swore
He’d hold her nozzle agin the bank
Till the last soul got ashore."

"All boats have their day on the Mississippi
And her day come at last.
The Movastar was the better boat,
But the Belle, she wouldn't be passed.
And so she came tearing along that night,
The oldest craft on the line,
With a negro squat on her safety valve
And her furnace crammed rosin and pine."

"And the fire broke out as she cleared the bar
And burned a hole in the night.
Quick as a flash, she turned and made
For the willow bank on the right.
There was running and cussing, but Jim yelled out
Above the awful roar,
"I'll hold her nozzle against the bank
Till the last galoot's ashore.""

This third paragraph is also quoted in Charlotte McLeod's Balaclava college detective stories, as one of the professor's most treasured poems.

The whole poem about Jim Bludso, by John Hay:
https://www.bartleby.com/lit-hub/yale-book-of-american-verse/195-jim-bludso-of-the-prairie-belle/

The film from 1017, that has been lost.

The exhibit in my picture has only recently been moved there, it was there when I visited the museum a couple of days ago, but not there when I visited the museum in summer (Munster is only a 30-minute-drive away).

OK, another hint:
I said it belongs to the category of artillery, but it's not artillery firing in a ballistic pattern, so not a howitzer, mortar or something like that.
It's a 75mm gun.

OOPS! Never noticed this until after I made the post above.

The wife and I were on the Groyne watching as she sailed past. His time in charge was short lived (till she past between the piers and headed out into the open sea) seeing as he was Ist Officer (three stripes) which puzzled me because he was in overall command at least once a day during cruises.

The photos were taken in 2015 and he became a Master/Captain (four stripes) early 2019
