It mounted six 106 mm manually loaded M40 recoilless rifles as its main armament, which could be fired in rapid succession against single targets to increase the probability of a kill. Although the actual caliber of the main guns was 105 mm, it was designated 106 mm to prevent confusion with the ammunition for the 105 mm M27 recoilless rifle, which the M40 replaced.

It was produced in limited numbers for the U.S. Marines after the U.S. Army cancelled the project. The Marines consistently reported excellent results when they used the Ontos for direct fire support against infantry in numerous battles and operations during the Vietnam War. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/34/Ontos.jpg:salute: over to Catfish

I was sure it had to be guns with those lands and grooves visbile in the fore ends. Seems this M 50 was used with some effect.
The Marines consistently reported excellent results when they used the Ontos for direct fire support against infantry in numerous battles and operations during the Vietnam War.
I sometimes wonder why some successful ideas that have proven their effectiveness, are given up. I would imagine this thing would prove valuable nowadays also for Ukraine.
Same applies to the A-10 Warthog.

was the Pricipessa Jolanda also constructed this way? The vessel is a fitting out ship for vessel completion after the initial hull drydock construction is complete and slid down the quay into the water for completion at the fitting-out berth. Funnels, engines and interiors would be added at this phase.

Catfish
08-08-23, 12:58 PM
The Principessa Jolanda was the sister ship of the P. Mafalda, but it sank during launching. They had made an error in already fitting the ship out with all its deck superstructures and interior, without adding proper ballast and coal.
This was not repeated when building the Mafalda, which was used for transatlantic voyages to South America, from Genova.

The object you are looking for is not a part of either ship, nor has it anything to do with the building, sinking or salvage.
It was rather an invetion to speed certain things up.

capablE OF OPEN SEA TRAVEL?

Catfish
08-08-23, 02:47 PM
Some were indeed brought over the Atlantic to the US. There were some.. barges w/o own propulsion needing a pushing boat, but they also talk of two freighters that have been converted to have those.. installations.
Several must have been used in New York harbour, at the time.
An American in N. York is quoted to have been surprised that this modern technology was NOT from the US.
But the real purpose they served could only be done in harbours/very still water.
As said before they became obsolete at some point.

Big hint:
They were initially invented to speed up things, regarding transatlantic passenger steamers.

is the picture in the puzzle from the book cropped, showing the Principressa Malfada while being colliered by the puzzle vessel? My search under "photo: Principressa Malfada being coaled by collier vessel " is zilch!:03:

Catfish
08-09-23, 05:04 PM
^ uh what?
In my book there is a photo with the Principessa "colliered" (does this word even exist?) by one of these, yes.
And Google image also finds it, provided i post the whole picture of what I posted here.
Which is why I only posted a detail :03:

It was a new system that sped up the coaling of ships using coal to fire their steam engines. Which is why this system became obsolete when oil was used for heating the boilers (and later the Diesel-engined ships appeared).
Beforehand the coaling was done by men carrying coal buckets, which would take up to 24 hours for a ship like the P. Mafalda. With this new system coaling was done in less than six hours.

Aktungbby
08-09-23, 05:18 PM
...a 'collier' is a vessel specifically for the purpose of transporting coal in bulk...therefore your puzzle's vessel must needs be a collier. If looked up on Google, 'collier' specifically reflects the river Tyne and Newcastle as one of the earliest coal shipping ports with such ships; methinks our resident Banks Line 3rd engineer would have solved it by now!?:o Based on your comment above, I'm on the right track...just a few trestles short?? The great lakes WWII training carrier, USS LANGLEY was a converted collier :hmmm::shucks::O:

Catfish
08-09-23, 05:23 PM
I guess it was first used in Dakar, before the ocean liners made the "transatlantic jump" towards Buenos Aires.
It was not called a "collier" but a barge (which I mentioned), a pontoon, or a coal lighter, since most had no own propulsion.
So this is the word for the thing, but who invented it?

Aktungbby
08-09-23, 05:38 PM
Guisseppi Collieri?:D

Catfish
08-10-23, 01:46 AM
:haha: no, it is an italian name, and the surname will do

Hint: The invention was to take a coal collier/barge/pontoon/lighter/freighter/whatever/!"§$%&/!! and mount crane-like structures on it that vertically move the coal from the cargo hold to a height, where the chutes could release the coal directly into the ship's hull coaling portholes, which sped up the process significantly.
The Principessa was already one of the fastest ships of her time (called the greyhound of the seas), and the new technique made the voyage from Genova to South America even shorter.

Aktungbby
08-10-23, 10:07 AM
to reiterate; an italian designed lighter/pontoon/barge?

Those are the two freighters that were changed to accomodate this crane/chute system.
There were lots of lighters with those chutes and the two freighters you mentioned.
The photo is just one of all those lighters without propulsion, they usually have no name.

We need the name of this coaling chute system, or its inventor (name is the same)

Emilio Menada?

YES!

This is the one, Emilio Menada. Those barges were called "Menada pontoons" / "Menada's patent coaling lighters" or in german "Menada's Patent Bunker Schuten"

https://www.aidmen.it/articles.html/articles/meccanizzazione-nel-carbonamento-e-nello-sbarco-di-rinfuse-r64/

english translation:

https://www-aidmen-it.translate.goog/articles.html/articles/meccanizzazione-nel-carbonamento-e-nello-sbarco-di-rinfuse-r64/?_x_tr_sl=it&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp

The new technology helped coaling up those liners much faster than it was done before: By workers carrying coal sacks.
When ships switched to oil-fired steam engines or to Diesel, those barges became quickly obsolete.

I admit this was difficult, there are only two links I found on the 'net.
Extremely well done Jim! :yeah:
Remind me the round is on me if you come to Germany, or if i ever meet you in England.

Over to you! :salute:

I was never overly confident because looking up SS Milazzo mentioned she was designed by Emilio Menada but made no reference to pontoons etc. so I'd say it was only a guess or a long shot at best.

Oh and when you get over to Blighty.....mines a pint and a large rum and pep :03:

Looking for something now.
