I've been looking at narrow gauge railroads half the night and still cannot come up with a suitable 0 8 0-2 6 0-2 6 2 built in the 30's; reconstituted in 70's example...:hmmm: @ jimbuna: is this engine you rode on in Northhumbria?
I've put in Northumbria & Newcastle with no luck
Two clues here: You are both close to 'home' and the second and probably the giveaway clue: The guage is 9 1/2"

Just twenty yards away is the perimeter fence of (Marine Park) with a pavement and road, on the other side of the road is the Sea Hotel where I have dined on numerous occasions and just another twenty or so yards takes you to an amusement park/fair, the beach and stone pier (a mile or so long) reaching out into the north sea. All of this is about two mile from my place of abode.

That looks like it. What did you find it under? Nothing came up under 9 1/2" gauge British railways.:wah: As for interest: I've ridden the Felton CA Roaring Camp Big Trees Narrow Guage RR for years incl. holding major Civil war reenactments at the site. Phew, as Eichhörnchen would say, this was a real stinker! :har:
Well done Jim :haha::up:
I cannot remember to ever have looked so long for something here w/o giving up. The major hint was 9 1/2" of course, but even then nothing showed up.
I have tried all kinds of word combinations and then some, and it would NEVER show.
I finally entered something like "narrow gauge in England 9 1/2" " or "english 9 1/2" gauge tourist railroad", and up came a page with hundreds of pictures, and again nothing fit. Nothing but the LAST picture at the bottom lower right end of an endless scroll, and even this did not immediately look like it with the locomotive having some white rings on the boiler front and the side not visible, not to mention it was RED.
But i clicked on it.
edit:
Leading Catfish to the Northhumbrain promised land is gonna hafta be it! :O:
Nope, it was not about region, though when i accidentally found the red 2-6-2 at Lakeshore, which was running next to Newcastle, I thought this could be it.

Must admit I enjoyed that puzzle even though I know little to nothing of the subject matter.
The location (Marine Park) is also a lake with a small island which is home to ducks and swans and the site of a model boat club I used to be a member of back in the day. I spent many a good time with my radio controlled boats and even a 7' WWII S Class submarine.

re reenactment I like Shays, but they are a chore to restore, and shake themselves to pieces when you go faster than 2 mph. Also no Shay at the time of the civil war, they came later (1875?) :O:close enough. 1880ish, but accuracy wasn't the main focus as much much as the 'Dixie' aspect to a bunch of Confederate reenactors incl. my brigade leader who collected classic era railroad dining car memorabilia and knew the Roaring Camp RR owner. The reenactment, including a 10 mile march, four abreast in full gear at 0300 AM thru the Santa Cruz Mtns downhill to the rail-head brought out residents, largely former Southerners who cheered us on. The whole advertised affair attracted hundreds of 9 western states' reenactors, and lots of local (paying)train riders; becoming something of a safety and logistical nightmare in a small mtn. community of Felton. Needless to say, the damnyankees skeedaddled at the first volley...:arrgh!: in the South, damnYankees is considered one word!!:O::know:is your puzzle a WWII Tallboy bomb?

The direction is right, also it almost looks like, maybe it shows when you paint the photoshopped right cone really black, and let it end with a cut (more like a nozzle ;) ) instead of a pointed end.
Gun camera?
Not a gun camera. This has nothing to do with weapons or guns, though the whole contraption where this was fitted to, could have been used by the military. Indeed the military was interested but the project was given up.

made in Amerika?
No. The US military was interested though, as were civilian companies internationally.
The US later developed another idea which was offering the same advantages, but which is unstable in comparison and has accidents now and then until today.
The thing we look for was thoroughly tested and proved to be reliable and well-suited to all kinds of tasks, unfortunately development was stopped.

No. Germany had its own projects for missons this thing could have fulfilled, but nothing came of them either, probably due to WW2 repercussions.
Some sort of power plant? This is really confusing...
I hope so :O:
Power plant, hmm in a way. It was fed with fuel and of course air, and ignited. I would hesitate to call it a rocket though :hmmm:
Even more confusing: This thing was not needed to work all the time during operation of the craft it (and its three siblings) was attached to.
Generally several nations and companies of the time were trying to develop technology that could fulfill certain demands this thing could. Most were abandoned, but they are recently on the table again.

Maybe make the black part thicker and a bit less conical, i do not know how those Google lens algorithms work :hmmm:
Were these a result of researches into the fine control of craft which could hover - rather like retro rockets?
It was indeed made for a VTOL craft, and could also make it hover. But these were not used as retro rockets.
But these "rockets" did not fire against the ground, since they (four of them in all) were used more horizontally.
Hint: in a circular fashion :03:

Yes it is a tipjet of the Fairey Rotodyne:
https://i.imgur.com/g89oevGl.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/bUwu24Zl.jpg
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkJOm1V77Xg
It used the tip jets for spinnning the rotor during start or landing vertically, and they were switched off during normal flight, the rotor being used as an autogiro while two powerful turboprop engines provided thrust during flying.
There were three pipes feeding air and fuel into the jets through the rotor blades, igniting the mixture within the tips provided thrust through the nozzles during vertical take-off and landing; it was not needed and shut off during flight.
The Rotodyne was a very reliable and successful design, with orders coming in internationally from airlines and military, then further funding was stopped and the project vanished in history.
(The US later came up with the Bell Boeing "Osprey" as a multi-versatile aircraft that combined helicopter and-fast-flight capabilities, but it keeps crashing now and then, and never was a real good design when you consider balance and ground effect.)
The Fairey Rotodyne was much more stable and faster, with less fuel consumption.

Why does Jimbuna complain about my pictures (and then solves them easily) but not this one?
It's an effing narrow strip of colours, like a painting made by a three-year-old with fingerpaint, viewed through a mailbox slit.
No problem, made it a bit wider and vertical instead of a mailbox slit.
You know I'm here to help :D

I wrote we are in the "plant kingdom", so no mushroom or fungus – a plant.

Not a Waihee Rainbow. But you are correct geographically.
Is it cultivated - or always growing wild?
Also cultivated: it is growing wild, being cultivated for commercial use, and also used for decoration.

:haha:
Hmm this is what friends told me, always ask your wife :wah:
So Moira ummm Aktung did not bark up the wrong tree :03:
It is the rainbow tree Eucalyptus deglupta growing and cultivated from Southeast Asia and Philippines to New Guinea.
I really thought it grew in Australia due to the Eucalyptus species, but no.. sorry for the fuss.
It sure looks like a fictional plant out of the "Avatar" films ..
"The tree is widely exploited for its wood, which is traded internationally. A comparative newcomer to cultivation in plantations, as the only Eucalyptus species to grow in the humid rainforests, this species is now widely planted throughout the wet tropics of the world. Due to its very attractive bark and quick growth, the species is frequently planted as an ornamental tree."
