are there more than 1 'spikes'?
Eichhörnchen

No - although there are other sharp pointed areas this is the only part you would call a spike

is the lettering of significance? or just graffitti?
Eichhörnchen
10-03-22, 01:01 PM
It looks quite beautifully engraved but I can't really read it - could be the unit's name or most likely the maker, since this would've been a prestigious job
Eichhörnchen
10-03-22, 04:41 PM
Clue: Each regiment that has these has perhaps only one or two in use for ceremonies, although I haven't been able to discover this for sure. If there were more soldiers than that who carried and used them in the past then it would probably always have been just a few

Farrier's axe of the royal horse guards?
"The spike on the axe was used to put severely injured horses out of their misery as humanely as possible.
In order to account for all animals killed in action, the sharp axe blade was used to chop off the hoof of the deceased horse that was marked with the its regimental number.
Army farriers still carry axes like this at ceremonial occasions - fortunately they do not use them anymore."

https://i.imgur.com/hHbtVxz.jpg Well done, Catfish!
@ Aktung - I think we'll have to agree to differ - I'd call it a long handle, since I'd say that a shaft is most usually for pushing or rotating something at the end
https://i.imgur.com/gjdlkEt.jpg Some are curved like this, which I'd argue makes it best described as a handle. I thought it safer to call it a handle (never heard of an axe shaft) although now you bring it up I do agree that a pole-axe is on the end of a shaft. But that's a different thing anyway
Catfish
10-05-22, 02:39 PM
I have never heard of this before, some heavy device being used to kill your mount and then dismember the corpse for a hoof.
I read that in the british cavalry - since horses were expensive - some sold their horse to then claim it being dead and get a new one, to make some money.
When this method rose to attention of some officers, this.. device was invented. One of the hooves was imprinted with the military "stock" number, and cavalyrymen claiming their horse to be dead had to provide evidence (read: the hoof with said number).
Nothing beats a well-organised military. Ahem.
At some point i was looking for cavalry axes and ceremonial presentations, and axxidentally found it.

Ok, the show's "Dr Who". The piece of kit looks like it's from the BBC's Props Dept.
What is it though??? I don't want to say outright what I think it is, but I think it's something to do with Cybermen.

Lol :03:
Let's solve it so someone else can have a go....
The lady in question is Kathy Troutt.
Born in England but grew up in Australia. At age 16 she set a new world record for Womens Deep Scuba Diving - 320 ft on normal compressed air, and nearly died in the attempt. She got "Rapture of the Deep - Nitrogen Narcosis" Euphoria, and was saved from plunging to her death by an attending Navy diver.
She became a Marine Biologist and worked at the Australian Museum in Sydney and at the CSIRO.
She was a much sought after photographic model - Glamour and commercials. And worked with local filmakers on Marine documentaries and "Age of Consent" with James Mason and Helen Mirren as her "body double".
Also worked at Marineland at Manly and Taronga Zoo looking after their huge collection of fish, turtles, dolphins, sharks, seals etc.
Moved to London, more work with dolphins. Was recruited to work on "The Day of the Dolphin" movie, and later both "Blue Lagoon" movies.

Salt Lake City, UT since 1971 Bingo! I knew I'd seen this post approx 3-4 years back. USS Brinkley Bass! @ jimbuna: that's 3 syllables though! I wonder if Sailor Steve knew about this though:Tragically, veterans who served aboard the USS Brinkley Bass were likely exposed to asbestos over the course of performing their regular duties. Until the mid-1970’s, asbestos was frequently found in equipment used on ships like the Brinkley Bass, including boilers, turbines, valves, pumps, and electrical components. Materials such as gaskets and packing were also often made entirely from asbestos. These items were found in an especially high concentration in the boiler and engine spaces, which, when combined with poor ventilation below deck, put the sailors who worked in those areas at a significantly heightened risk. The companies who provided the Navy with this asbestos equipment were often aware of the health risks of asbestos, but did nothing to warn those serving on board the USS Brinkley Bass or its contemporaries. This negligence led to many veterans developing mesothelioma years after their Navy careers had ended.
Navy veterans who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma have a right to seek compensation. Settlements can offset or cover the often overwhelming costs of medical care, and may provide additional sums for pain and suffering endured. It is important to seek legal counsel soon after a mesothelioma diagnosis is made however, as the law limits the time during which a lawsuit can be filed. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0a/USS_Brinkley_Bass_%28DD-887%29_underway_at_sea_in_June_1968.jpg

that's the one; I left it for U as you'd gone down the dolphin path ahead of me, and I'm so old that I'm garnering treasure for heaven by not pre-empting, larceny or purloining someone else's research efforts in this thread.:O: I had read of this critter in the paper not long ago but I've never dived in the Gulf of California.

Vaquita?

That's the one but you may be overstating the numbers, my source reckons perhaps only a dozen or so.
https://i.postimg.cc/s23hb51x/Copy-of-SAFAF-2-X1-images-2020-09-11-T181843-474.jpg (https://postimg.cc/5XkyCYBW)
The vaquita is an extremely rare dolphin species on the brink of extinction, with an estimated 12 living in the Gulf of California. Females are the larger of the two sexes, and grow to around 1.4 meters – making our list of the world’s smallest animals.
The biggest threat to vaquitas is from the fishing of totoaba, which uses gillnets vaquitas can get tangled in an unable to reach the surface to breathe. In 2016 gillnets were banned in the vaquita’s habitat, but illegal gillnet fishing continues, as does the incidental killing of the handful of vaquitas left in the wild.
Over to you :salute:
Catfish
11-01-22, 06:01 AM
Thanks Jim, i know a bit about dolphins but this one was new to me.
We should have started a survival program for the Vaquita porpoise, i saw there are now 10 left in 2022, if at all :dead:. One more species extinct thanks to overfishing :dead:
There are also very small dolphins in the North sea and the baltic, called "Schweinswal" or "Tuemmler" (Phocoena phocoena), they were abundant only ten years ago, now they also are an endangered species. Chemicals, pesticides, dying in fishing nets, not enough food due to excessive fishing, submarine sonar and so on.
The "Deutsche Wildtier Stiftung" has chosen the Tuemmler as "Animal of the year 2022"; but most probably too little, too late.
Since Aktungbby knew it all the time :O: (and some time problems here) i propose he poses the next quest, would this be ok?
Jimbuna

Aktungbby
11-06-22, 12:03 AM
HMS Pioneer or HMS Perseus?...both Colossus class; originally designated dept/service ships converted to light carriers...but not able to land aircraft, only launch. Planes had to be craned aboard... the only other 3rd depot/service carrier, HMS Unicorn was built as designated and could launch aircraft

Aktungbby
11-07-22, 12:12 AM
ok; gotta go with HMS Pioneer...it's the only one I can find with stern photos as per jim's hint:"part of aft end" but I'm still unable to precisely match the photo with the ship fotos.
Catfish
11-07-22, 05:31 AM
Well i did not find the exact photo which Jim posted either, but here this Perseus one has a deckhouse or structure at the rear deck:
https://www.quora.com/When-the-Royal-Navy-converted-HMS-Perseus-and-Pioneer-to-maintenance-carriers-in-1944-45-how-did-that-remove-their-ability-to-launch-aircraft
Then it seems the aft deckhouse was installed on both:
"Seriously, when she and another sistership were selected to be converted into Aircraft Maintenance Carriers, the Arrestor Gear and Catapult were removed. Also a Deckhouse was built on the Aft portion of the Flight Deck and an Aircraft Crane was also installed on the Flight Deck, Portside just forward of the Island."
Though i am not sure about the credibility of this quora quote :hmmm:
