Australian 'Powerful owl' (Ninox strenua)?
Jimbuna
11-08-22, 02:47 PM
That could well be the one Kai.
Aktungbby
11-08-22, 04:33 PM
British?no, but it is a couple of republican islands
Australian 'Powerful owl' (Ninox strenua)? much smaller island!:O:
That could well be the one Kai. Not by an 8000+ mi. longshot; U undoubtedly passed it in the hot tub of your Banks trampship:O: on a course of 175⁰ish to round the Cape of Good Hope...enroute to the Malay coast and beyond...without noticing it was there; 'cause no one else did either??!:arrgh!:
Catfish
11-09-22, 02:31 AM
^ what is a "Banks" trampship?
"a course of 175⁰ish to round the Cape of Good Hope"?
This would point to Antarctica .. Du sprichst in Brezeln :O:
Smaller island, probably meaning smaller than Australia
Can't be Madagascar, would be Africa.
Cannot be India, not an island. But then .. Sri Lanka?
Is it endemic, on this "smaller island"?
Jimbuna
11-09-22, 05:56 AM
^ what is a "Banks" trampship?
The shipping company I worked for as an engineering officer, Andrew Weir (Bank Line). https://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/bank.shtml
Jimbuna
11-09-22, 05:58 AM
Asian Eagle Owl?
Aktungbby
11-09-22, 10:34 AM
nope...too far east. If this bird were a parrot, it would spout Portuguese & be a Republican! Any more hints will give it away! @ Kai it is endemic; possibly on two islands approx. 90 miles apart... but for sure on just one island so far.@ Jimbuna: I already read all about your company when U posted your ship in an earlier puzzle, and I poured over the list of vessels to find yours for two daze and just aced out Kai by a minute! :D:arrgh!:
Jimbuna
11-09-22, 11:02 AM
Found in the Canaries?
Aktungbby
11-09-22, 11:54 AM
nope; but you're in the right ocean. Now mount Pegasus and fly 6633 KM on a base-course of 172⁰!...to the small island. :arrgh!:
Jimbuna
11-09-22, 01:35 PM

Catfish
11-09-22, 02:34 PM
The shipping company I worked for as an engineering officer, Andrew Weir (Bank Line). https://www.theshipslist.com/ships/lines/bank.shtml
I remember Andew Weir but not the name 'Bank Line'
Thanks :salute:
@Aktung are you sure you got that 6000 miles right at 172° south?? From Africa this would be Antarctica :hmmm:
By now I would have bet it was a brazilian island :/\\!!
ok just guessing: São Tomé scops owl (Otus hartlaubi) ?
south of Canaries it could be the Capverde islands, but nope, not 172 degrees. edit again: should be very close to Africa if this 172 course is correct. This makes it an african island. But Aktung said not african. Hmm.
Further away Santa Helena is not portuguese, language is english. I do not find other lusophone islands ..
i give up ... waiting for Jim.
Aktungbby
11-09-22, 04:42 PM
Not otis Hartlaubi but you're in the right area...that's 6633 kilometer not miles; and an island, not on a continent, as Jimbuna had inquired.
Catfish
11-09-22, 05:34 PM
ok last guess: Otus bikegila from Príncipe Island?
The eye's colour does not match though with brown/yellow. Ah whatever :)
off 'til tomorrow :salute:
Aktungbby
11-09-22, 05:56 PM
It is indeed the newly discovered Principe scops-owl, or Otus bikegila,https://scitechdaily.com/images/Otus-bikegila-Owl-2048x1536.jpg?ezimgfmt=rs%3Adevice%2Frscb2-1 it is named after Ceciliano “Bikegila” do Bom Jesus, a local parrot harvester turned conservationist and nature guide who alerted researchers to the species' existence and who captured birds for study. Ok, I stumbled accidentally about it and had never heard of it before.
What exactly is it?

Its a nacelle and an oil cooler. :D
Turboprop? :hmmm:
Catfish

Its a nacelle and an oil cooler. :D
I am not sure about cooling oil – could also be water cooling – but oil may well be.
Hint: not only a nacelle, it is also the fuselage.
Turboprop? :hmmm:
Not a turboprop.

Catfish
11-12-22, 03:09 PM
umm ok, was it so easy? Google image search found nothing when i tried for a test :hmmm:
It is the 'Belphégor', project started before WW2 but ony tried out after the war. Plane built for extreme altitudes, but it did not suceed. Engine used was just of all from a Heinkel 177, there was a lot of material left after the war.

"Southern coast"? like around Ghana?
What is meant with "transcontinental" :hmmm:
Egypt (Arabic: مصر Miṣr [mesˁr], Egyptian Arabic pronunciation: [mɑsˤr]), officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia via a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula.

Further west.I understood hint: "trans continental africa" from the get-go but your "further west" answer had me looking at "transcontinental"Yemen which is immediately west of Oman; and French-built Saudi frigates attacked by Yemeni Houtha missiles etc....not corvettes:wah: your answer should have been "further Northwest":O:but I still managed to lead Catfish to the "promised land"...Egypt.:yep: EDIT I just re-looked up "Egyptian warships" on Google again, having done so yesterday...and there it is; plain as day; I'm an idiot! Congrats to Catfish.

When sailing to the Gulf through the Suez Canal my ship would top up the bunkers at Port Said and the Gilly Gilly man would come aboard (if the Captain gave permission) to entertain with his magic show.
Only a fool would leave their cabin door unlocked.

Thanks, somehow thought across one continent, which is what "transkontinental" means in german (other than "interkontinental" = across continents. When it was not West Africa i changed to the middle of the continent being also wrong :/\\!!
Ah whatever :haha:

Fouga CM88 Gémeaux
Yes, this is it!
Derived from the Fouga sailing plane, then fitted with one or more turbines called "Sylphe"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py1tnKofH5c
then later as a twin plane called "Gémeaux" (Gemini) used as a test bed for several turbines with the typical "W" tail as seen in the photo above.
The Fouga company was later inherited by Potez.
Further development led to the well-known "Fouga" Magister jet training plane using two turbines attached to and into the fuselage.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fouga_Magister
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pXCxpjQW0M
being in military training service in so much countries due to its excellent handling and flight qualities, coming from the original glider design. Also used in aerobatics with some success..
Well done, though Jim was probably close :)
