Instead of holding back the german tribes it was the center of constant attacks, battles and defeats on both sides.

Anyway at the beginning of the 19th century some german archeologists excavated roman ruins and began to find out about the history of romans and their great wall they called 'Limes' in Germany. Short to 1900 another archeologist excavated the "Saalburg" near Bad Homburg and proposed to Kaiser William 2nd to reconstruct it around 1910.
