Heinkel 280??...:hmmm:

Catfish
10-22-24, 11:48 AM
 That's the one!

https://i.postimg.cc/Sx1G01Zw/Heinkel-He-280-Archiv-Eberhard-Kranz.jpg (https://postimages.org/)

First armed jet aircraft, first ejection seat, first jet with tricycle gear and a lot of other new ideas (the version #8 had a V-shaped tail), jets thought out at Goettingen by Mr. Ohain and Heinkel as financier.
The plane layout was rather conventional, so it would have been easier to build, also Ohain's centrifugal jet layout would have made the jets smaller with a still higher output than the also-tested central-axis Junkers, BMW, Argus or other available jet engines of the time.

The Heinkel-Hirth He S8A jets designed by Ohain used conventional metals instead of rare alloys due to a clever cooling layout, but had teething problems, so the successor S11 jet was under construction – when the RLM decided to push the construction of the ME 262 and the JuMo engines, and scrapped the HE 280.
Meserschmitt then began to invent the ME 262, from scratch.

Heinkel often criticized the Reichs-Luftfahrt ministry and was not liked much by the leading nazi class, and while he was not jewish they often spoke of "the jew Heinkel", so this may also have been one of the unreasonable reasons.

The Latécoère 631 was developed before WW2 and and built in 1938, beginning with trials. During the war, Germany took one of the planes to Lake Constance (Like the 'Amphitrite'), where it was destroyed by an allied air raid.
After the war the project was continued, but the 631 had a lot of problems, leading to crashes and many casualties.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/Ia_37_I.jpgTHAT"S The one; over to you! anyone climbing into the cockpit of this experimental fighter would have to be seriously prone to flying. The I.Ae. 37 project was initiated by Reimar Horton around 1952, following the cancellation of his previous flying wing projects in 1951. This design was a single-engine jet fighter, incorporating a Delta wing flying wing structure, with engine inlets positioned laterally on each side of the nose.
Wind tunnel testing commenced in 1953, along with tests on scale models at speeds of up to 200 km/h (120 mph). A full-scale glider prototype was constructed and took its maiden flight on October 1, 1954. In a unique design feature, the pilot lay prone, viewing through the clear nose of the aircraft.
The glider’s flight performance was assessed as excellent, leading to the commencement of a prototype powered by a Rolls-Royce Derwent V engine in 1955. This engine was chosen for its availability, despite not meeting the desired thrust for the fighter. My next big hint woulda been: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b8/HortonHearsAWhoBookCover.jpg:O: https://www.destinationsjourney.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/ia37-4.jpg.0f18e098a67670c5799b0b066dfde3a8.jpgThe cockpit was later altered to permit a conventional sitting pilot.

Correct - prize goes to Vinny. If you google, there's a highly entertaining video on there called "Hunt for the Aerotrain"

If I'd led with the cockpit photo I could've probably kept this going since everyone would've assumed it to be a plane, but I'll probably only be here in fits & starts until the weekend

An unusual variant of a Dutch Fokker G.I? Observation aircraft, maybe?

Aktungbby
10-31-24, 11:11 AM
Indeed!...the belly 'bathtub' could be removed to allow a bombbay. The Fokker GI was a formidable ground support twin-tail 'forked-tailed devil'. (Before the US P-38 Lightning.?!)The production was taken over by the invading Germans who used them as training aircraft. One escaped to England in 1940, during the Nazi invasion of Holland, where its wooden wings were scrutinized by British airplane manufacturers. A replica exists in a Dutch air museum. Over to Ostfriese :salute:

"In 1934, Hermann Kemper applied for a patent for a functional, controllable circuit for levitation based on the principle of electromagnetic attraction (EMS - electromagnetic levitation). Far ahead of his time, he wanted to use this technology for tubular railroads as the high-speed transportation system of the future."

Now it is being used in China. From jet technology to seismic technology, to transrapid – while other countries rob and copy, Germany gives it all away for free :O:
