Some kind of refrigeration plant?

Catfish
09-06-22, 01:32 PM
Hmm, Aktung said something about "nuclear" context, and "electromagnetic" :hmmm:

Reactor cooling system?

Aktungbby
09-06-22, 01:47 PM
Some kind of refrigeration plant?it undoubtedly had cooling and heat facilities to house the crew

Hmm, Aktung said something about "nuclear" context, and "electromagnetic" :hmmm:

Reactor cooling system?Only in the sense of the nuclear era ie Cold War and any number of electro magnetic devices to accommodate communications and atmosphere mixology transfer valves for crew habitation/breathing; generally under pressure...which on occasion proved mortal. Eichhörnchen got the name half right in post 725!

Some .. device to build Chernobyl, like construct a basement underwater, like a caisson?

Aktungbby
09-06-22, 03:57 PM
Some .. device to build Chernobyl, like construct a basement underwater, like a caisson? exactly, in fact "caisson disease" was a major issue; costing lives in on accidental surfacing. Now 4 the name...which Eich has already partially broached inadvertantly but abley...

Congratulations to Eichhörnchen :salute:
This was a nice one and a fascinating read in this link, have never seen nor heard of this. Sealab and Cousteau's yes, but not Chernomor.
(Sealab III also seems to have become a disaster: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SEALAB)

Eichhörnchen
09-07-22, 03:17 AM
Thanks, Kai - when it became apparent that this was some kind of undersea (perhaps polar) dwelling, I added my previous 'half correct' answer into a search for "underwater habitation cher"

A very difficult one so well done, Aktung

^ Exactly that! These were pressed into service with the Control Commission Germany, with whom they proved very popular. Aktung was getting close with his mention of my dad, who is shown here with his beetle when he was with the CCG in 1945

Aktung was so close :o
it wasn't the roof, you should have said no lol
I remembered this photo of your dad, but not the detail.
I have now saved it! (interesting info also, i am just reading a summary of the english reeducation efforts in Germany after WW2).
I may add that my mother worked for "Public Safety" after 1945 !
I noticed your detail photo did not exactly look like the roof of a 'beetle' (i had 3) but then i never had such an early one with the small ('Brezel') rear window.

I have nothing ready, would it be ok if Aktung took the next one? :salute:

Eichhörnchen
09-07-22, 04:04 PM
I did consider just answering "No" but then thought that might just look mean later on :haha: and I did wonder why you said 'roof' when there are no such pronounced swage lines along the roof of a beetle (I used to own one too)

Good going

Okay, to prevent a recurrence of recent times I'm putting in a new rule....if the person who guesses correctly doesn't put up another 'puzzle' before 24 hours have lapsed after having guessed correctly, the person who gave the previous 'puzzle' (in this instance it would be Aktung) must nominate someone to start a new 'puzzle'.

This has already happened a few times so I expect we can all be comfortable with the above.

Soooo till approx 8pm GMT tonight.

I wonder how it can be still alive, in China :hmmm:
:Kaleun_Wink:

Pika are small, mountain-dwelling mammal found in North America and Asia. There are 29 species in total, and while the North American and most of the Asia pika have healthy, stable populations, the Chinese Ili pika was thought extinct until photographed in 2014 by Weidong Li.

Only discovered in China’s Tianshan mountain range in 1983, Ila pika live on bare, sloping rocks at high elevations where they subsist on grass. Since discovery, their numbers have declined by over 70%, and stand at around 1,000 today. Their demise is due to increasing temperatures driven by climate change which forces them to retreat up to the mountain tops.

Aktungbby
09-27-22, 11:04 PM
from the differing hint photos: are there slightly differing styles of this?

Eichhörnchen
09-28-22, 02:30 AM
Yes, officers' and other ranks' differed at (at least in earlier times) in both size and quality - although the one in photo 3 looks different only because it's old and battered - it would've originally looked tidy like the other two

How this item changed over time, plus who wore it and when, is almost a PhD study in itself

Catfish
09-28-22, 03:09 AM
Hm if those were awarded "post-2000" it is unlikely they were worn in "WW2 combat"?

edit ah ok, so this goes back to WW2 days but is still awarded today?

Eichhörnchen
09-28-22, 03:21 AM
Best re-read, Catfish - they weren't awarded and their wearing pre-dates WW2 by a VERY long time. This regiment wore these in combat in WWI but not WWII, according to my cursory researches, and although its wearing should have stopped when they were amalgamated I found at least one source online who says that some soldiers continue to wear it - although I can't understand how on earth they could now that their regiment has ceased to exist

It's made of ribbon and I think that the officers' may have been satin at one time but that's of no importance here.

And - although I agreed that it's an emblem, it's an emblem of something in their history - but it's more than just an emblem since it forms a part of the uniform

Royal Welch Fusiliers( formerly The 23rdRegiment of Foot)? https://www.rwfia.org/Images/rwf_flash.jpgThe Flash is a regimental distinction of the Royal Welch Fusiliers that is shared by no other regiment in the British Army. It dates back to the early 18th century when soldiers wore their hair in a braided queue which was held in a bag to avoid the grease soiling the back of the uniform coat.
The wearing of the queue was abolished by 1808, yet the Royal Welch Fusiliers ignored the order to remove the five black ribbons from the collar of their coats. As they were stationed in Nova Scotia at the time, there was little notice taken of their disobedience, but on returning to England in 1834, an inspecting General ordered the ribbons removed, and an appeal was made by the regiment to King William IV. In the same year the Royal Welch Fusiliers were granted the right to wear "The Flash" as a regimental distinction and have worn it ever since.

Nonsense!:arrgh!: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2798228&postcount=29 'Twixt getting amalgamated, subsumed, reaffiliated and reformed into other British regiments; the hunt for the captain has been a good one! I'm just living up to billing in the Rhode's red coat thread...and Wiki doesn't differentiate as much 'twixt Brit and Welsh uniforms as it does Scots; which is where i spent most of my search till U said "black ribbon". When you answered "family member" I knew the pic you referred to; but the edge-view of the flash would have gone by me perception wise anyway....:hmmm: I'll have have something suitably insidious shortly.

"Lechyd da!" - cheers! I don't mind 'Wiki' not knowing the difference between a Welshman and an Englishman but a Royal Welch Fusilier certainly would (note for others that this spelling is the archaic one for 'Welsh' that was retained for some reason).
