President Joe Biden's $1.9tn (£1.4tn) relief plan to help Americans during the pandemic is approved in the House of Representatives.
Auckland, New Zealand's biggest city, will go into a seven-day lockdown from Sunday after one new case of coronavirus is detected.
Prof Sir Mark Walport, former chief scientific adviser to the UK government, says it "does make sense" to roll out the coronavirus vaccine by age.
Portugal's government is extending the suspension on commercial or private flights between mainland Portugal and the UK and Brazil until 16 March.

There's nothing (< 10% of the overall funding) in it for covid relief. It's all a democrat slush fund for things completely unrelated to helping people financially impacted by covid lockdowns. What they've really done is financially-ruined our generations' grandchildren.
This is like the 2nd-to-last nail in US's economy's coffin. We're heading for a depression that will make the Great Depression look tame in comparison.

Those of us who actually understand science and math and who weren't pushing a political agenda were laughed at months ago for saying that PCR Ct are way too high and that PCR in the absence of symptoms should not be used as a confirmation - someone tested in such a fashion could have had COVID weeks ago, not known it, and recovered - and PCR would still find viral debris - and this has overinflated the statistics of the dead because many many places have recorded a positive test within 30 days to be a covid-19 death.
I'd even go so far as to consider the following claim to be closer to true than not:
Flu season has always consisted of people being infected by influenza and various beta coronaviruses, and it has only been this past year where we actually tried to test everyone where we've found a fraction of everyone who actually is infected. In the past, when someone died with influenza-like symptoms and in the absence of a positive flu test, it was chalked up to a generic pneumonia - no one was testing for coronaviruses, adenoviruses, RSV, etc. except in specific instances such as infants and kids. That is - we've *always* had many more deaths involving cold and flu season that were never attributed correctly because no one ever had a reason to pay close attention before. Combine that with an annual flu vaccine that is on average only 40% effective every year, and lots of those pneumonias have a cause that no one has ever bothered to find.

German death declarations discriminate precisely between a death from Corona (=caused by Corona), and a death with Corona (Corona being present but not the main cause of dying).
Case numbers are going up in France, Germany, Czech Republic while I type this, these are ust the countries were I am sure it is so, there may be others in Europe, too: SAwedne on my mind, Switzerland, Ireland). The Czech are absolutely desperate, their hospitals are overwhelmed. Triage is reality. They desperately scream for help and foreign nurses.
I have a basic understanding of science and stastics. I did statistics for 5 years, and after getting my diploma, for 2 years in part time employment in psychological sleep research data analysis. - Its long time ago, though, dont expect me to shake a cluster analysis or a factor rotation out of the sleeve without doing a refresher first. I studied at a time when SSPS for Windows was, unreliable and bug-ridden. Thats why we calculated it all not just on PC, but also manully, by hand/head. Doing so is no fun.

In the US, they definitely have *not* segregated with vs. from in any uniform manner.
Dependent upon which hospital, which state, and which health department, deaths can and have been reported differently. The federal government created a perverse financial incentive to report all deaths with covid as if they were from covid. The CDC also issues guidelines that, for a while, resulted in the reporting of anyone in close proximity to someone who tested positive as if they were also positive, without requiring a positive test result.
I don't trust *any* of the statistics in the US for that reason, as well as that the *recording* of test results is also not uniform. Dependent upon the lab, PCR Ct will and have varied, resulting in reporting of false positives and face negatives. Multiple tests of the same person have in some cases been recorded as separate cases.
We also have issues with *how* cases are reported in the US. Dependent upon the reporting agency, you'll still see dumps of data that would imply a huge spike in cases until you drill down and discover that many of those cases are from a week, a month, 6 months ago. You'll get a huge spike in Mondays or Tuesdays because of tests collected Friday- Sunday. Likewise the first business day after a holiday.
This would be fine ***if the media reported these facts***. The problem is, the media report, for example, "...500 new cases reported today..." without that context, which, cooked with the fact that most people are actually really dumb (even the highly-educated), and it results in the current panic with the associated power grabs by governments.
Facts about lockdowns and masks actually not working are surpressed. Lockdowns (part of NPIs) don't work once you get >1% of the population exposed. Masks are more unsafe outside of a clinical setting when used by the untrained.
Vaccines? If vaccines are working like they should, then you need to inform recipients of how long it takes to achieve the desired immunity rather than a nebulous "continue masks and social distancing for the foreseeable future.". Either they work or they don't. If they don't, then just unlock everything and be prepared to deal with whatever hospitalizations and deaths occur until herd immunity - people at higher risk can decide for themselves whether to hide forever or not.

You obviously do not know much about vaccines. "They either work or they don't"? Sorry, it is not that simple, not with the Covid vaccines nor with most others.
From the German Doctors' Journal:
“But what does '90 percent effective' mean?” ask the RWI scientists. Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean that nine out of ten people who get vaccinated are protected from infection. “That would mean that if you vaccinated all 83 million Germans, then 90 percent of them would be protected. Only the remaining 8.3 million can become infected. But that would still be far more infected than has previously been the case. So that can't be meant, ”said the scientists.
The statements of 90 or 95 percent effectiveness do not refer to the group of those vaccinated, but to that of the infected. Biontech reported that a total of about 43,000 people took part in their study, about half of whom were vaccinated and the other were given a placebo. Seven days after the second dose, there were 94 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the study population.
The definition of efficacy can be found in the Pfizer study protocol: For this purpose, the proportion of COVID-19 cases in the vaccination group is divided by the proportion of COVID-19 cases in the control group. The indication of effectiveness is therefore a relative indication.
This in no way devalues the vaccination: After all, there must have been eight cases in the vaccination group and 86 cases in the placebo group. With a 95 percent reduction due to the vaccination, the ratio is eight to 156.
The RWI scientists remind you that the “90 percent effective” reported by Biontech and Pfizer refers to the reduction of infections, not of serious illnesses or even deaths. "We can only hope that this reduction will affect serious illnesses to the same extent, but this is not being investigated in the current studies," they concluded.
On your torade againbst masks, I leave you alone, I am tired of this nonsense. I fisherman using a net with smaller loops catches more smaller fish than a fisherman with bigger loops. Every late grammer school child understands this. Its the same with filtration of materials used for breathing through them for a filtering effect. A cotton cloth is not the same like meltblow tissue, but sitll is better than nothing if severla layers are used over each other. Try to hold sand in a coffee filter and in a noodle strainer. No facts withheld. Promised.
Enough of this all, these things are matters of coruse. Or at least they should be, not needing to be explained again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again, anbd every time as if it is new and for the first time.

I understand perfectly well how vaccines work - that no one has ever highlighted that the efficacy for covid vaccines is just a guess it's an important omission of information. We know that year-over-year flu vaccine efficacy averages just under 40%. No one wants to admit that covid vaccine will end up the same way as pharmaceutical companies guess which strain(s) to develop the next year's season...
Masks? You fishing net analogy is completely incorrect. When masks are used as ppe by trained personnel, they are fairly effective. When used by the average lazy person who wears the same mask again and again, who scratches their nose or sinistral their mask multiple times, that mask becomes a vector for infection.
As to the ideas of masks preventing spread - you need to understand fluid dynamics to understand that it will only stop a portion - and that portion would have dropped out of the airstream on its own anyway - because masks leak around the edges spreading aerosol. The only thing the masks might be good for is humidifying the air. The most significant factor in the spread of respiratory viruses is humidity levels in the atmosphere - which correlates with the decreased humidity found during cold and flu season - which explains why the covid cases are starting to rapidly decline now that we're moving into spring.

Thats plenty of half-truths woven into misleading "theory".
Masks must be worn correctly. If you apply somethign positive in the wrong way, than EVERYTHING becomes somethingyou can argue against, because EVERYTHING can be misused, wrongly used, abused.
I know the airstream problem at the rims: I wear glasses. When they get foggy, I know that the mask does not fit tight and correctly. Because a FFP mask that fits the face form correctly, does NOT leak at the rim, and your breathing this way becomes heavier and a bit more difficult - then the filtering does its job correctly. Heck I even shaved off my beard around the chin and now only have a small bar of hairs over my upper lip.
Such masks filter as they should, and worn this correctly, even a KN95/FFP2 masks filters not 95% but even around 99%, almost like a FFP3 filter, as far as virus particles are concerned. The problem is that they become wet over time, and then form transmission bridges and attract even more particles than if you would wear no mask. But only then. Solution: Do as the producer says, wear them for so and so long only in a row before changing them. It depends on your breaths moisture level, room moisture, and whether you are calm and rested, or do physical work.
Contamination with breath's germs, funghi, can be delayed by frequently drying them, exposing them to UVC light of 250-260 nm (thats what I do), or hang them up in the direct sunlight. The UV device shoudl be checked thgat it really does emit that liught, most sold UVC LED do not (banana test is one option, they say). After some time however, they must be replaced for sure. You could also bake them for a few minutes, but not more than I think 75°C, that deactivates the Covid-19 virus reliably. But any hotter melts the meltblow tissue, changes the "loop" size by deformation. Not good.
This should have been communicated more clearly, here I agree. Instead plenty of idiots tried to profile themselves by debating many ifs and dos and donts and maybes and concerns and Ängste until the confusion and contradiction was complete. I started wearing masks last year in early February already. People looked at me like at a zombie, i was one of the first persons in my city, I have little doubt. It took the authorities months more until the finally stopped warning against wearing masks and starting to demand that people should wear masks, and even then, with that delay, just cotton cloth masks (which nevertheless reduce particle density in inhaled aerosols by around 50% if 2-3 layers of quality cotton layers are place dover eahc other). FFP masks can be had for 50 centy now at almost every supermaklet cashdesk. Like chewing gum.
Virus load at exposition is a decisive factor for the quesiton whether a severe or a light cause of the infeciton is being suffered later on, because a high load shortens the time for the immune system to adapt to this new enemy. So: EVERY LITTLE BIT IN REDUCTION HELPS TO PUSH CHANCES IN YOUR FAVOUR. We know this since almost one full year now.
That masks can be used wrongly is no excuse for propagating they are useless or even increase the risks. You could demand that seatbelts are removed from cars because people using them wrong could strangle themselves with them, or brake their chest bones. People wearing masks wrong, should be forced into compliance by shop owners, supermarket workers, everybody around. Rules must be enforced, else it makes redcued sense only to declare them. Instead in germany we got a debate about social aggression and mobbing if people ask others to wear their maks correctly. Insane.
Best is to avoid other people, especially crowds of people. IQ is reversely proportional to size of crowds and masses of people, the more people there are, the more stupid they behave. Psychology of masses - Reason is helpless against it. Avoid them - or mow them down with machine guns. Since the latter is no option: avoid, avoid, avoid.
Stop propagating these destracting misinfomations of yours. You do harm to people who follow your dubious theories. At least 1 on 3 infected, is symptom-free and does not know he is infectious for others. But those he infects, some of them may not get away with just a non symptomatic case, but may get into deep and long lastign trouble. Undermining even the simpliest of rules to reduce risks, oversteps the red line to physical assault and malice, therefore. Biden'S predecessor did so all the time. And now half a million Americans are dead. That dirtbag waded in a sea of blood he helped to make much bigger than was inevitable. Stop doing like him. If I would have my way, he would seat on the electric chair for his behaviour: for mass murder. And I mean that absolutely serious.
Keep distances. Avoid crowded places and too many people in closed rooms and halls. Wear masks inside buildings and in crowded places in the open. Tune and modulate your immune system. Get vaccinated with whatever jab is available when they give you the opprtunity. And after that, continue with those behaviour rules. Avoid air travelling. Avoid cruise ships. Avoid busses, trains, if you can. Avoid group offices. 2m distance in rooms IS NOT ENOUGH. Aerosol clouds linger in the air for hours, and they spread much faster than was previously assumed. We know that since last year'S spring and summer. And smear infection is a factor, too.
My God, its twelve months and one still must explain the simpliest of the simple things. :/\\!!

I'm sorry you feel that way. These are not half-truths. They're inconvenient truths. The vast majority will *never* wear masks correctly - the majority of masks being used are worthless cloth with too wide a weave that people will reuse over and over without sanitizing and that they will turn into disease vectors. It's human nature - people are, overall, completely lazy.
Social distancing needs to be a *personal* choice. Most of us are tired of catering to every hypochondriac out there. We're sick of it. It's ruined the economy which has caused hardship and despair for untold numbers of people. It's caused kids to commit suicide. And it will never end until people refuse to comply, because the risk is completely overstated. The vast majority of the planet has either had it and recovered, has been vaccinated, or is at little to no risk of dying. You want to hide at home? Be my guest. I won't stop you or judge you differently. But I do not want to stay away from other people, nor do the majority of people - human contact is as necessary for health as food, water, air and sleep
You know what *is* a huge risk? Touch surfaces. The experts claim it isn't a huge risk. The experts have no understanding of human nature. People are slobs. They'll pick their nose, wipe their behind, not wash their hands, adjust their mask, and then open a door, spreading covid (or other things) all over the handle or knob. I've *never* seen a single supermarket employee wiping down shopping carts. I've never seen store clerks wiping down doors or POS terminals. Not once in the past year. Not once.

In Germany, in stores and public transportation, FFP2/KN95 standard is now obligatory. Shop owners can be persecuted if they allow customers wearing different things than FFP2 masks. That the government allowed cotton cloths for so long I have always critizised, from beginning on. Last spring, such FFP 2 masks were rare and they wanted to reserve them for the health workers. They are not rare anymore since mid-summer, and affordable since then, now being cheap and at pre-pandemic price niveaus. You can buy them at supermarket cash desks, like chewing gum or cigarettes. 50 cents.
Using public transportation without paying for a ticket they persecute. Driving without fastened seatbelts, or license: gets persecuted. I wonder why they are not going as strict after incorrectly worn masks. But many wear them correctly. You make it a case that no masks should be worn at all. That is not acceptable, nor is it logical.
Social distancing a personal choice? No, because if you decide against it, you do so at the health risk of others whose freedom to stay healthy and distanced from possible infectous people you violate. your freedom ends were you viollate other people's freedom on most essential ,basic riughts. The right to live, for example, the right to stay healthy. The right to not getting put at risk just because you feel like doing so. If your choice to not socially distance from others leads to boosting the infections, you cannot claim a right then, because others get ill, go to hospital and some of them die - because of your egoist decision.
You have no right to put yourself over the right of the other to live. It would be slaughter. If not even murder, which it is if you know in full what you are doing. Taking the death of others into acceptance, to me is the same like intentionally that somebody, planfully, willfully. It just is the same guilt.
In supermarkets here, they have tissues and desinfectant sprays. You take a tissue, with it you grab the flask with the spray, and spray the shopping cart'S handles. You put the flask back, swipe the handles with the tissue, throw it away, it, and then have a relatively clean handle. Even more important: clever people use desinfectant on their hands right after they left the shop. I do so immediately after I left the shop, I have hand sanitizer always in my pockets these days.
The virus does not endlessly live on surfaces, no virus does. Store the goods you bought in the open, in the light, not in a dark place after returning home. For the first hours, a day maybe, then place them where you usually do.
There have been no reports so far on people infecting themselves with the use of cash money, cardboard boxes, glass bottles and such. And virusses do not like sun light of the day (UV radiation deactivates them fast).
You see, you focus on what a certain amount of people do wrong. This you turn into an argument that every effort is in vein, and conclude that thus no rules and measures should be tried to delay the virus at all. If we would do like you claim, we would get a situation like there was in the US, and worse. Hospitals would not just bog down - they would be destoyed by he sheer weight of corpses piling up on their floors. The drama of those 500 thousand dead is not that a country with 320 million populatio has more deaths than a coutnry with just 80 million people, that is almost to be expected. The crime lies in the fact that many of these deaths were unneeded, and caused by non-caring and malicous political leadership that did encourage to behave the way you propagate here, and motvated many state givenrment and pressed them as best as it could to play ball.
Is the mass killing the last US government committed not horrifying enough ? Must we all want to repeat it? Germany has had 70 thousand dead now. Germany has one quarter the population of the US, quite exactly. If German conditions would be projected onto the US, you would multiply these losses with four, get 280 thousand and then would have a reaosnable estimation for the number of deaths that were unavoidable in the US. Instead, you have seen in the US almost twice as many. 220 thousand more than expected by this rough calculation. And that is the scale of mass murder I accuse the old government of. Over 200 thousand Us citizend dead who could still live if the old government would not have motivated statre governments to not act accrordinmg to Fauci's and other's recommendations, but behave as if nothing was going on and masks were nonsense and all is fine. A blood bath which could have been avoided.
And here now comes you, telling the world that we should not wear masks and all those measures are pointless.
Is that really all that you have learned from the past year? Is this really all...? "No masks!"...???
I know that the economy cannot stay locked down forever. I am furious at that the time won by it has been headlessly, carelessly wasted by the EU and the German government, I want to see the politically responsible idiots hanging at the gallow for their monumental, desastrous, super-costly failure. But we need to trade time, until our toolkit to vaccinate against this virus - and whats more: to treat severe cases, to actually heal this desease - is more complete, and armed up. Else our hospitals would end like they ended in Bologna last year. Absolutely, totally, chancelessly overwhelmed and brought down, runnign out of just evertyhing, and triaging by routine and sending patients back, denying them entrance. The pages with death notes in the cities newpspapers being multiplied by a factor of 18 per day - compared to the number pf pages per week before the desease.
Thats what it is about, and was always about. Buying time, avoiding that the health system gets completely overwhelmed and completely brought down. The economic and financial falldown will be immense. I have warned of it and posted about it often enough. I know no answer to that. That all together is why we call this crisis a major desaster. A DESASTER. Desasters know no runnign with a happy end. If they would have happy ends, we would call them differently - but not desasters. To me this desaster has the potneital to cause a moinumental system chnage: of money, eocnomy, govenement form, globla econiomc order. Everything. Right now we deal with the medical dimension of the desaster. I fear that is just the prelude to the real earthquake coming. It wouldn't be the first time in history that a huge power or dying empire is given the final kick to drop over the cliff by a natural deaster or a big pandemic.

Since you obviously don't understand that what they do in Germany is *not* what is done nor is required elsewhere, I'll just wish you a happy life hiding in your bunker while the rest of us move on.

Their politicians always lagged behind by 1-2 weeks. Not wanting to be active preventively, since that would mean unpopular consequences. So they always were too late. The people now pay the price. They thought they could outsmart the virus. Instead the new virus simply outran them.
Many other European countries soon could be where the Czechs are today. Especially Germany. The pressure to open up, is immense. And that at the starting phase of a third wave of the mutated virus. And it is an election year in Germany, making it even worse.

A coronavirus "variant of concern" first detected in Brazil has now been found in the UK.
Three cases have been detected in England and separately three in Scotland.
In England, officials are still trying to track down one of those who tested positive for the new variant.
Meanwhile the three Scottish residents had flown to Scotland from Brazil via Paris and London, the Scottish government said.
Experts believe this variant, first detected in travellers to Japan from Manaus in northern Brazil in January, could be more contagious.
In England, the first two cases were from the same household in south Gloucestershire, with a history of travel to Brazil, but the third is not linked, Public Health England (PHE) said.
The whereabouts of that third person are still not known, as PHE says they did not complete their test registration card so follow-up details are unavailable.
Officials are asking anyone who took a test on 12 or 13 February and who has not received a result or has an uncompleted test registration card to come forward immediately.
With regards the three cases in Scotland, the government said other passengers, who were on the same flight from London to Aberdeen, are now being contacted.

World Trade Organisation’s new director-general makes history
Line of Duty season 6 will start on this date
Germany was under pressure to change its Covid vaccination strategy on Sunday after the country's top vaccine regulator acknowledged that advice against giving the AstraZeneca jab to over 65s had been flawed.
The announcement came as a term of German scientists called on the government to follow the UK in delaying second doses after a study showed it could save up to 15,000 lives.
Thomas Mertens, the head of Germany’s Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko), said on Saturday that the country was likely to change its controversial guidelines against not to give the AstraZeneca vaccine to over 65s, saying errors had been made. Promising “a new, updated recommendation very soon”, Mertens said: “somehow the whole thing went very badly”.
“We had the data that we had and based on this data we made the recommendation. But we never criticized the vaccine. We only criticised the fact that the data situation for the age group over 65 was not good or not sufficient,” he said on Germany’s ZDF news network.
Mr Mertens said the commission believed the AstraZeneca vaccine was “very good” and that their opinion of the vaccine was “now even better with the addition of the new data”.

FOCUS writes:
US researchers concerned: Dangerous and unassailable? New corona mutations are spreading rapidly in the USA
At the same time, Sars-CoV-2 mutations have appeared on the west and east coasts of the United States that are causing concern. The Californian variant seems to be more dangerous, the mutant in New York outwits the vaccination. And both are spreading very quickly.
It is in the nature of viruses that they do not stay the same for long. They change virtually with every transmission. They do this to adapt to any potential host and to ensure their maximum reproduction. In the case of the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus, (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/) at least 12,000 mutations were found after the first wave, none of which were of great importance.
In the meantime, however, mutations have emerged that have a significant impact on the pandemic. The mutants found in Great Britain, South Africa and Brazil (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/orte/brasilien/) have gained the upper hand over the original virus in many places. The mutations make it easier for the virus to penetrate human cells. They are definitely more contagious, and possibly also more dangerous for those infected in terms of the course of the disease and the risk of death. After all: The vaccines developed so far can apparently prevent infected people from becoming (seriously) ill even with the mutations.
Mutants common in California and New York
However, mutants have now emerged in the United States, adding to the great concern that vaccines will fail against them. Independently of each other, virus variants developed in California and New York (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/orte/new-york/) that cause worry lines in virologists.
First, the Los Angeles Times (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.latimes.com/science/story/2021-02-24/the-nightmare-scenario-for-californias-coronavirus-strain-here-is-what-we-know) reported that the Sars-CoV-2 variant called B1.427 / B1.429 is spreading rapidly in California. Still unknown in September, it was found in every second positive sample in January and will probably account for 90 percent of all infections in the state that is particularly badly affected by the pandemic by the end of March.
Worse than this high contagion dominance is the concern of scientists at the University of California at San Francisco (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/23/health/coronavirus-california-variant.html?action%3Dclick%26module%3DRelatedLink s%26pgtype%3DArticle) that these mutations lead to more severe Covid-19 courses with higher mortality. Virologist Charles Chiu had been on the trail of the mutation since the end of last year.
Chiu now says that those infected had to go to the intensive care unit five times more often than Covid-19 patients with the original Sars-CoV-2 pathogen. The risk of death was eleven times as great. Other scientists do not yet want to share Chius' concern. The database of 324 patients would not allow such a dramatic conclusion.
Meanwhile, variant B1.526 is spreading in the New York region. Apart from the fact that it is also very contagious, it has a mutation that calls into question immunization after surviving Covid 19 disease or a vaccination.
Two research (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.02.23.21252259v1) teams from the California Institute of Technology and Columbia University (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.02.23.21252259v1) in New York independently discovered the E484K mutation in this variant. It is also known as the "escape mutation". Because of this change on their surface, the viruses can escape the antibodies that the immune system generates in response to the Sars-Cov-2 infection or the vaccination.
Reinfection by mutants is possible
Experts do not currently assume that this mutation will destroy immunization by the current vaccines. Richard Neher from the University of Basel said in the Süddeutsche Zeitung (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.sueddeutsche.de/gesundheit/coronavirus-usa-mutation-new-york-kalifornien-1.5218052?reduced%3Dtrue) : "It is not yet a dramatic finding, because vaccinations are probably still very effective against serious illnesses." However, it is possible that people who are already using the original Sars -CoV-2 were infected, can infect with the mutant again. Such a reinfection would then probably be mild.
So far, the E484K mutation seems to occur wherever a large number of people have already been infected, such as in South Africa (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/orte/suedafrika/) and Brazil before New York . Mutants with an "escape mutation" are on the rise in both countries.

The American writer Edward Estlin Cummings coined a glorious saying: "There is some **** I will not eat". I think I had reached this point at the latest when I heard what Angela Merkel said (https://2pwutjqp3kfdm6ii7uvixqow44--www-spiegel-de.translate.goog/thema/angela_merkel/) this week in the Union parliamentary group: "We certainly need the month of March to develop a comprehensive test strategy." There was and always is in the course of this pandemic Again sentences to freak out, freak-out sentences. One year after the start of the pandemic, five months after the start of the second wave, in the country where the world's first corona test was developed, Merkel's leisurely sentence is more than an impertinence, more than outrage, more than just a catastrophe.

Latest test and trace figures for England show the number of people testing positive for coronavirus fell by 19% in the week to 24 February.
But a "promising" six-week decline in Covid cases in Europe has been disrupted by a rise in infections, the World Health Organization says
"We are seeing a resurgence in central and eastern Europe," says Hans Kluge, the WHO regional director for Europe.
New cases are also rising in several western European countries, Kluge adds, saying Europe needs to expand supply and access to vaccines.
Germany is changing its stance on the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, allowing over-65s to receive the jab, Chancellor Angela Merkel says.
UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak says the "shock that coronavirus has done to our economy has been significant" and "won't be fixed overnight"
It "will be the work of many years, decades and governments to fully pay all that money back," Sunak says.
New vaccines to fight variants such as the one from Brazil can be fast-tracked through the approval system, says UK regulator the MHRA
US President Joe Biden has criticised the lifting of mask requirements in the states of Texas and Mississippi, calling it "Neanderthal thinking"

People in Italy who have already had Covid-19 will receive just one vaccine dose instead of the usual two, the Italian health ministry has announced.
France and Spain introduced the same approach in the past month.
Brazil has recorded a record death toll from Covid-19 for the second day running. A further 1,910 people have died, adding to the 250,000 total death toll recorded there from the virus. Some 70,000 new cases have also been recorded. Several serious waves of infection have already devastated parts of the country. A partial lockdown has now been introduced in the city of São Paulo and the government is trying to boost its vaccine campaign.
The EU says it is putting Russian vaccine Sputnik-V under an ongoing review, potentially opening the door for its use in Europe. The vaccine is approved in numerous countries around the world. But several European nations, including Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have expressed interest in buying doses in recent days, posing a challenge to the EU's approach of buying vaccines as a bloc
The Czech Republic has asked the government in Beijing for deliveries of the vaccines made by China's Sinopharm, a Czech presidential spokesman has confirmed. The country has seen a surge in the number of coronavirus cases.
Greece is extending a lockdown in the greater Athens region of Attica as new infections reach the highest number so far this year. Under the new restrictions, residents will only be able to shop in supermarkets within 2km (1.2 miles) of their homes.
Egypt will now begin vaccinating older people and the clinically vulnerable, its government has announced.

“Make no mistake, COVID-19 has not disappeared,” the Republican governor said in a statement. However, “It is clear from the recoveries, vaccinations, reduced hospitalizations, and safe practices that Texans are using that state mandates are no longer needed.”
How do you know he's acting irresponsible when not one journalist has investigated and published data he used to make his decision for the state of Texas? Flattening the curve and reducing the potential for overwhelming hospitals has always been the goal. Has that been achieved? Also, his lifting of the state government mandate does not forbid people from wearing masks or using hand sanitizer. Neither is there anything preventing the governor from making the call to wear masks and restrict business operations if that curve starts trending up again. Lets not focus too much on Texas either because most other states have already or are in the process of lifting restrictions too. Including the state lead by that hypocrite "do as I say and not as me and my corporate cronies do" Gavin Newsome.
U.S. infections and deaths have fallen dramatically and state governments are moving on that information. Neither Biden, Trump or any U.S. President has the authority to rule over them one way or the other.
If you want a picture of what irresponsibility then look no further than your beloved E.U. vaccination roll out. That's what irresponsibility looks like, but you're probably used too that. European states are moving on getting the vaccine themselves because of that crackpot bureaucracy of clucking hens cant seem to pull it together and protect their own.
By the end of the year things may change here, we may see a rise in infections and require restrictions again. One thing is certain what will not change is that do nothing E.U. bureaucracy (and Britain's love for chicken sandwiches. ;))

By the end of the year there will be another spike in the fall/winter. ALL coronaviruses are strongly seasonal, so this precipitous dropoff in the past couple of weeks not unexpected as we start rolling out of cold/flu season. We shouldn't be worrying about variants because of initial studies indicating T-cell responses being mostly unaffected by variants:

Texas *should* be worrying about all of the covid-19 positive illegal aliens being released into the US who then largely disappear rather than being reachable by authorities before showing up for immigration proceedings. That disappearing act makes it impossible to properly do contact tracing.

Got my latest blood values today. 25-OH-D (Calcidiol, the storage form of Vitamine D) now at 73 ng/ml. Excellent, superb, outstanding! I want it to be between 70 and 80. :yeah: Watch out, Corona, here I come! :D
For reference. I have switched from 10.000 IE to 15.000 (dark time of the year, still), will go back to 10.000 in summer. I am now clearly but moderately "fat", weighing 87 kg at 178 cm body height, I sin too much still with carbohydrates and sweets. I take Vitamine D since late spring last year.
In Germany, the sun has an UV index of 1 from early Octobre into May. For Vitamine-D production via your skin you need an UV index of 4 and higher. You do not produce less vit-d if the index is lower - you produce NONE.
Get those pills. Dont be shy of maintenance doses of 5000 and 10.000.
Also did an Iodine Loading Test (I needed to explain my - new - doc what that is...). Fortunately his lab is one of the few in Germany (Germany is the country of the iodine-phobics) that offer that. Iodine excretion was 41 mg - 45 would be the possible optimum and maximum. Itmeans my body is almost fully loaded with all the iodine that it needs/wants, which is an awesome lot more than what it got until last year (which was practically almost none). I'm almost there! :yeah: For reference, I now take netto 25 mg of iodine per day. TSH slightly raised, as it should be at this point of time, its temporary and its normal for what I do, and already has started to drop since 4 months ago, so the symporter activation in my system seems to be almost completed now, too. Took me 9 months.
And Tuesday I got the result of my Omega-3 matrix. 13%, it says, that too is a bit above the "just wanted" range of 8-11%, so I say: optimal. :yeah: More good news! For reference, I take 15ml of a fish oil per day that contains amongst others 2,6 gr of EPA and 1.7 gr of DHA. The taste is that of grapefuit and not any fishy at all, actually is very delicious (and expensive...) Also, I additionally have 2-4 times per week fatty fish like makrela, herring and mostly salmon.
Three shots, three hits. Cant get any better. I'm sorry for any virus crossing my way! :03:
Considering that I was also able to skip my hypertonia meds, I must say that although it sounds absurd: the past 12 months of a Corona year so far have been a splendid gain of health for me. :Kaleun_Cheers:

The Italian government has blocked the export of an Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine shipment to Australia.
The decision affects 250,000 doses of the vaccine produced at an AstraZeneca facility in Italy.
Italy is the first EU country to use the bloc's new regulations allowing exports to be stopped if the company providing the vaccines has failed to meet its obligations to the EU.
The move has been backed by the European Commission, reports say.

Yes, but this is something different. An active drug that does not need the organism to produce the antibodies, easily produced, storable in normal fridges, any doctor can apply this stuff, no halls or centers needed, expectation to produce and vaccinate all of Germany within two months.
Works against several Covid mutants because it is basically an anti-Sars agent.
Downside is it takes ~2-3 months until immunity. But then total immunity, against all known Sars viruses.
His new strategy is good though, after some try to stop him he will go another legal way and distribute it for free to all doctors who want it..
We will see. Maybe he will suffer a sudden heart attack or such.. after the last 4 years everything is possible.

Cyprus has become the latest country to suggest it will open its borders to people who have been vaccinated against Covid-19, saying that Britons that have had two doses will be able to travel there from May without needing a negative test or to quarantine.
It's prompted more debate on whether "vaccine passports" could become a feature of foreign travel.
In the UK it has been suggested that people could use the existing NHS app to prove their vaccination status or a recent negative test and Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said Britons will be able to demonstrate whether they have had the jab if required by other countries.
Other countries and travel companies have also said they may require proof of vaccination for tourists:
Greece will admit Covid-negative Israeli tourists this summer who can prove their status with Israel's "green" digital vaccine certificate
Denmark and Sweden are developing vaccine passports in time for the summer.
Saga, which specialises in holidays for the over-50s, says passengers on its 2021 holidays or cruises must be fully vaccinated.
Australian airline Qantas says travellers will eventually need to prove they have had a vaccination to board its flights.
Denmark has followed France and Germany in approving the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine for over-65s, after a large study in Scotland found it to be very effective across all age groups.
Denmark has also teamed up with Austria and Israel to develop future coronavirus vaccines, aware of the risk posed by new virus mutations. The countries’ leaders discussed this co-operation in Israel on Thursday. The EU does not object to the initiative, though France insists that the joint EU strategy is the one to follow. The slow vaccine rollout in the EU has been much criticised.
The EU's internal market commissioner, Thierry Breton, told the news website Politico that “it’s fine” for EU countries to use the Chinese and Russian vaccines if they wish to. The EU’s European Medicines Agency has not approved them yet. Commissioner Breton said those vaccine deliveries – to Hungary, for example – were small, whereas millions of doses were needed EU-wide. He is seeking new facilities in the EU to ramp up vaccine production.
The French region closest to the UK – Pas-de-Calais – is introducing a weekend lockdown because of a surge in infections there. France is generally lockdown-free, apart from Dunkirk – just east of Calais – and the Nice area in the south. But French bars, restaurants and leisure venues remain closed and there is a nightly curfew. By the summer France aims to have vaccinated two-thirds of its adult population – 30m people.
Germany remains under lockdown and there is concern that only two of the 16 German states have got the seven-day infection rate below the official target of 50 per 100,000 people.

As good as even the most effective shots are, they can’t promise total immunity. A Bloomberg Opinion editor found that out the hard way.
I was vaccinated for Covid recently — I got my second Pfizer shot a few weeks ago. I was hoping that meant I wouldn’t get Covid, yet I tested positive this week. How is that possible?
Thank you, Mary, for sharing your story. The reality is that so-called sterilizing immunity, or protection that completely blocks a virus from infecting you, is rare. In fact, only one vaccine has been proven to provide that, and that is the smallpox shot. If you think back to the phase III trials of the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna Inc. vaccines — arguably the ones with the best efficacy so far — they were 95% effective, meaning some vaccinated people still developed symptoms even after the second dose. Also, outside the environment of a clinical trial, efficacy will be slightly lower; real-world data is showing about 90% efficacy. It’s also possible that you are infected with a new variant, such as the one that is circulating in New York, known as B.1.526. These variants are potentially better at getting past your antibody immunity.
^ The same story here in Denmark and Sweden-people who have received both injection and nevertheless get infected.
I will quote what a professor said on Danish tv, some weeks ago.
(from my memory)
The vaccine does not prevent you from getting infected, what the vaccine does is preventing you from getting very ill or die from a corona infection.

Levels of coronavirus infections in the UK have continued to fall, Office for National Statistics data shows.
The figures, for the seven days up to 27 February, reveal around 280,000 people in the community with the virus.
It suggests that the number infected has fallen by about a third in the most recent week of data.
Infection have also dropped in the over 70s age group in England, potentially as a result of the vaccine rollout, say experts.
The latest R number - 0.7 and 0.9 - suggests infection numbers are shrinking overall in the UK. It means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 7 and 9 other people.

Vaccine efficacy and efficiency must be seen separately, they are not the same. Also, an efficiency rate of 90% does not mean that you have a 90% chance to avoid infection if you get exposed.
We know only one vaccine in history that has fully prevented 100% of possible virus infection, all cases, and that was I think the vaccine for pox.
For a claimed efficiency of 90% this means:
Are 90 percent of all vaccinated people protected?
That can not be! In some media the statement was interpreted as follows: "That means 9 out of 10 people can be protected from infection by the vaccination."
"According to this, the vaccine would be effective for 90 percent of all people who get vaccinated," the researchers conclude. That would mean that if you vaccinate all 83 million Germans, 90 percent of them are protected; only the remaining 8 , 3 million can become infected. But that would still be far more infected than has been the case so far. So that cannot be meant. "
The scientists explain: "The 90 percent do not relate to the group of those who have been vaccinated, but to that of the infected."
BioNTech reported that around 43,000 people took part in the study, roughly half of whom were vaccinated and the other were given a placebo. Seven days after the second dose, there were a total of 94 confirmed Covid-19 cases.
The scientists are now quoting from Pfizer's study protocol, in which the effectiveness is defined: The proportion of Covid-19 cases in the vaccination group is divided by the proportion of Covid-19 cases in the control group. This value is subtracted from 1 and multiplied by 100, so that you have a percentage. "It follows from this that there must have been 8 cases in the vaccination group and around 86 cases in the placebo group, which corresponds to a reduction of around 90 percent (in the 95 percent it was 8 versus 156 cases)."

Germany, zero points
A column by Alexander Neubacher (https://2pwutjqp3kfdm6ii7uvixqow44--www-spiegel-de.translate.goog/impressum/autor-f5bc437f-0001-0003-0000-000000000590)
The rest of the world regards us with a mixture of malice, pity and bewilderment: Germany, of all places, fails to vaccinate. The Germans considered themselves the most cunning ones.
March 6th, 2021, 9.44 a.m.
This week the Guardian published an article comparing the situation in the United Kingdom with that in Germany. A popular ploy used by left-wing British media to make Prime Minister Boris Johnson look like a total failure. Earlier, anyway. "Why the Germans Do It Better" is the name of a British non-fiction book from last autumn: Why the Germans do it better.
But the journalistic trick no longer works. The German vaccination debacle has reversed the situation. Now the British are the heroes and wonder why the Germans are doing so badly.
While Johnson wants to give his country back its freedom in June with a proactive vaccine procurement, Chancellor Angela Merkel warns of the next lockdown, the Guardian writes: "Mummy, how could you let your fans down like this?"
In Israel, more than one in two people has been vaccinated at least once, in Germany only about one in twenty. US President Joe Biden promises that one dose will be available for all adult Americans by the end of May. Merkel is aiming to make the Germans "a vaccination offer" by mid-September. Denmark, Ireland, Portugal, Spain - half of Europe apparently gets vaccination better organized than we do.
For Germans, at least the younger ones, it is an unfamiliar experience; the rest of the world regards us with a mixture of bewilderment and pity. As usual with the Eurovision Song Contest: Germany, zero points. With a slight glee, British commentators imagine traveling to Mallorca in the summer and for the first time not having to fear that German vacationers have blocked all pool loungers with their towels.
We considered ourselves to be the very cleverest. The British: are so stupid and leave the EU. The Americans: elect a madman to be president. The southerners: nice people, but unfortunately disorganized. This is what we thought in Germany and we gladly offered to explain to others how to properly separate your garbage and get out of nuclear power.
Now nobody would claim that the German state had failed all along the line. Many countries envy us for our hospitals and the short-time work allowance from the Federal Employment Agency. Germany provides aid for its economy; It would be even nicer if the money were transferred quickly.
But apparently we lack the ability to react creatively to the crisis. Germany's authorities work with the usual bureaucratic thoroughness, pandemic or not. We'd rather bunker millions of doses instead of flexibly adapting the sequence of vaccinations. We'd rather wait until all doubts about the correctness of living room tests have been dispelled.
I think the German failure is our inability to behave differently than typically German.
Or as I think: the Germans always manouver in Napoleonic sqares.

Did I just say Germany manouvers still in Napoleonic squares? This is a translated text describing the story of the video that Catfish posted three days ago, on that German developers of a Corona vaccine who in return now gets sued by the German state. That video was in German, here you can get the story in English.
Unbelievable. This country is so sick.
German doctor develops corona antigen - and is reported by the state
Winfried Stöcker claims to have developed a corona antigen and tested it on volunteers. The result: Many antibodies were detected in 97 percent of the test persons. Instead of praise, the doctor fluttered into two advertisements, both from official bodies.
In addition to rapid antigen tests, Germany's great hope in the corona pandemic (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/live/) is still vaccination. The aim is to protect people against a severe course of the Covid-19 (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/gesundheit/) disease by activating the immune system .
German doctor develops effective corona antigen - and is reported by the state
Winfried Stöcker also researched with this goal and developed an antigen against Sars-CoV-2. But that also brought him two complaints that the official organs of the state and the state of Schleswig-Holstein brought against him. The "Spiegel" (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.spiegel.de/panorama/der-professor-und-sein-corona-impfstoff-strafanzeige-statt-unterstuetzung-spiegel-tv-a-53b1657a-7500-421e-b673-911a3eadea01) reports on this .
In Groß-Grönau, a small town in Schleswig-Holstein, Stöcker has its own laboratory. He has been researching there since he sold his company Euroimmun to a US company for 1.3 billion euros in 2017. In 2020 he started looking for a solution to the corona pandemic.
Stöcker's antigen offers many advantages compared to previous vaccines
The physician, specialist in laboratory diagnostics and recognized specialist in laboratory medicine, created an antigen that, according to him, offers many advantages. It can be stored in the refrigerator, can be delivered quickly and, in contrast to mRNA vaccines, which include the vaccines from Biontech / Pfizer and Moderna, does not have to be produced by the body itself.
But is it also armed against mutants? Yes, says Stocker. "You can now modify this part a little bit to include the mutants," he told the "Spiegel". On the other hand, the antigen cannot cause any damage, the doctor continues. Tests on volunteers, which include employees, his family and himself, have confirmed this.
Drosten and Streeck confirm Stöcker's results: the antigen works
Stöcker, convinced of its active ingredient, therefore wrote an email to Christian Drosten in May 2020 and shared his results with the chief virologist at the Berlin Charité. He replied that he could understand the self-experiment, but pointed out that the production of a vaccine would have to meet high quality standards if it was to be marketed.
Drosten also offered collegial help and suggested that Stöcker carry out neutralization tests for him. These check whether the test persons have developed antibodies that can switch off the virus. The results gave hope.
"I sent serum from me and during examinations it was found that the antibody I formed is able to neutralize the virus," Stöcker told the "Spiegel". A test by Hendrick Streeck, chief virologist at Bonn University Hospital, also gave a positive result.
Stöcker asks the Paul Ehrlich Institute for help - and is reported
While Drosten made it clear afterwards that he saw the whole thing as a "diagnostic examination, less than a test of vaccine effectiveness", Stöcker was motivated and sent the results to the Paul Ehrlich Institute, which is responsible for the approval of vaccines in Germany .
In an email to the chairman of the institute, Dr. Klaus Cichutek, asked Stöcker for approval for the immunization of volunteers. The laboratory doctor did not receive any feedback directly, but only by telephone from the institute's innovation office. While opinions differ on the content of the phone call, the consequences for Stöcker are a fact.
The Paul Ehrlich Institute filed a complaint against the doctor and reported its request to the State Office for Social Services in Schleswig-Holstein, which Stöcker also reported. It is "urgent, since it cannot be ruled out that further preparations and vaccinations, which may seriously endanger the health of the test subjects, will be carried out," quotes the "Spiegel" from the notification of the state office.
Stöcker stunned after ad: "Instead of taking up my advice, they slow me down"
Stöcker, who is represented in the proceedings by the FDP member of the Bundestag and lawyer Wolfgang Kubicki, does not understand this. "We would be able to counter the virus quickly and effectively. Instead of taking my advice and possibly having the positive results reproduced, they are holding me back."
The results of his self-testing on volunteers can hardly be the reason. Out of 100 test persons, 97 have high concentrations of antibodies and are immunized - and grateful. "I did it because the situation required it and because I trust him," says Stocker's colleague Elisabeth Meißner to "Spiegel".
Stöcker's "Plan B": Antigen's recipe put on the Internet - now he is hoping for the manufacturer
Meißner's boss doesn't let the ads stop him. Instead of marketing himself, he publishes the blueprint for the antigen in order to be able to disseminate it. His hope: that manufacturers "offer the antigen so that every doctor can buy it". The health professionals can then administer the antigen to their patients. "Then everyone would be helped," said Stöcker, who also answered the question of the legality of this Plan B in the affirmative.
For this purpose, Stöcker put the formulation of the antigen on his homepage and now hopes that a manufacturer will access it. First, however, the antigen would have to be produced in large numbers, tested on a large scale and then approved - a process that takes time. Financially, however, Stöcker does not bring anything one way or the other - in the case of production by a manufacturer, he does not see a cent.
It should be examined to what degree profit interests by other manufacturers have influenced the decision to get rid of Stöcker and to dump his work. Would not be the first time that such itnerests motvate for trying to suppress unwanted competition and competitors that are superior int heoir offer or cheaper and threaten the business model. Last but not least nutrition supplements.

So you rail against a government-industrial complex that would stifle a corona vaccine with minimal side effects, but you continue to deny the science associated with the fact that masks and social distancing don't actual prevent the spread of virus unless you do it before it spreads past 1% of the population. Perhaps you'll question the "experts" more often.
We have Dr Fugazi here in the US telling people to double mask even though recent research in Japan shows diminishing returns or even increased risk if you wear more than one mask. We have older studies showing masks outside a clinical setting are not effective due to untrained wearers contaminating themselves and others.
We have many studies showing that social distancing and other non-pharmaceutical intervention doesn't work once more than 1% of a population are infected in an epidemic/pandemic.
We continue with Dr Fugazi telling people that even if they are vaccinated they can't leave their bunkers until everyone is vaccinated - all while refusing to disclose his conflict of interest in that he'll be getting paid every time a vaccine is manufactured because he holds patents on key components necessary for their manufacture. That he funded coronavirus research in Wuhan is such a huge conflict of interest, he shouldn't even be allowed any involvement in policy making. That his wife is in charge of ethics concerning vaccines is another huge conflict.
In short - *anyone* in any government who is setting policy for covid or any other thing associated with public health and safety needs to be 100% vetted and even the appearance of impropriety needs to be disqualifying then from that position.

I have questioned the social distancing of 1.5-2 meters as way too close already last year, and said that it does not protect against standing and slowly wallowing aerosol clouds in enclosed compartments and room. ;) Wioth slow air cleaning, 8-10m.
FFP2 masks do indeed not fulyl prevent infecitons, but as their specificaiton says, FFP2/KN95 standard must filter 19 out of 20 particles. actually good quality FFP2 filters filter even almost 99% if correctly worn.
They trick is that any cloth you wear will reduce the virus load durign an exposition. Some do that more, some do that less. The virus load correclates with the severity of the developing case, since more virusses infecting on exposition shortens the time the immune system is left with to adapt before virus numbers overwhelm the organism. Any reduction of virus load works the probabilties in your favour. Even a sheet of paper will do that, although not too efficient, but they deflect parts of the air stream blwon into your face directly. But if you stay aorund, the aersols surroundign you nevertheless will reach deep into your breathing system. Aerosols in the air can stand there for long time to come, and that'S why it is important to not stay in them for long. The filter on your face then will only extend the time until virus load you inhale becomes critical.
What is so difficult in these things. I dont get it.
Imagine a winter day, you leave the house, and breath in and out, coming out of the warmth. What happens? You seem to breath out a cloud of fog. Thats is aerosol. When a smoker stands near by, you smell the burning tobacco, that is another, even finer aerosol, even if there is no smoke visible. As long as you smell it, there is aerosol . A weather mist, a fog that forms up out there, also is a form of aerosol - and it stands in the sky for hours, that fine it is, it does not just drop down to the ground - if it would, it would be called rain and the water "particles" would be much greater, being pulled down by their own weight.
Small particles hold a smaller virus load each of them, but they get inhaled much deeper into the lung, and so are considered to be more dangerous. Bigger particles hold bigger virus loads, but are not getting inhaled as deep into the lung.
Virus load during exposition is a key variable. Keep it low by the means available to you. Distancing, limited time to stay, wearing masks.
14 months and one sitll needs to explain the most simple basics. Unbelievable. Hopeless.
And the other thing. Some of the vaccines , or even just one, was confirmed to give sterile immunity, means: the person cannot be carrier and infect others while not getting ill himself. The others give the described vaccination protection to the person (their immune system is "live"), but they can still be carrier and infect others. Thats why it makes sense to argue that vaccinated people should not run aorund with unvaccinated people.

I'd take a look at recent studies postulating that the reasons masks are partially effective is the same reason cold and flu precipitously decline spring and summer - it's not acting as a filter all that much due to improper wear resulting in exhalate leakage around mask edges, it's humidifying the inhalate, which then coats your mucosal membranes, making it easier to clear any virus you do inhale.
In Germany FFP2 or KN95 might be the standard. In the US, many people are wearing any number of face coverings - bandanas, gaiters, t-shirt material, etc. - because state health authorities are only concerned with health theater and not being held liable rather than actual health.
The below illustrates the issue with the general public regarding wearing of masks.

The filter material (meltblow), will get wet from the breathing, yes. It should be replaced, else the moisture will allow even more virusses to pass through it, it then is almost a bridge. The masks need to be dried. The the trick is: do not use one mask too long in a row, (is literally printed on every package over here), there is a time limit these masks should be worn in one row.
I use a UVC light for desinfecting them, inside a box. Scepticism is on the order regarding boxes with inbuild UVC-LED (like beign on the market for years now to clean smartphones). They almost all are fake LEDs, just violet LEDs. As far as I heard, the so-called banana test is reliable. - The principle of UV-C desinfection is proven and much used in water purifying, hospitals, ambulance vans...
And another tip, in the open, talking to somebody make sure you position yourself so that the wind is coming from the side (or your back :D). Do exactly the other way around than a hunter would prefer: avoid having the wind in your face, blowing from the direction where the other stands. No brainer.
Wearing two masks, i only took note of the first such message, and it was about wearing a surgical mask and a cotton amsk together. Makes sense to e, but the moisture thign sneed toi be tracked. Doing so with FFP2 masks is imo not recommandable, the breathing becomes too heavy, I would expect. But that is what they did not recommend anyway. Just surgery masks and cotton mask. Why not wearing just an FFP mask in the first...?:06:
I am a night man, I get out of bed very late, but go to beed extremely late as well, 3-4 am. I prefer to go to supermarkets in the night hours, currently. Meets my living rythm. And has only a tenth or less of people around, compared to the day. I chose those times where visitor frequency is the lowest. Since the night is mine anyway, I really dont mind.
Never ring my door bell before 10am in the morning, if you want to grow old.

Where did the Sars-Cov-2 coronavirus come from? The answer is politically sensitive. A WHO investigation on site in Wuhan considers a laboratory accident to be "extremely unlikely". One group of scientists sees it differently and calls for further investigations.
The origin of the corona outbreak in Wuhan has still not been finally clarified. A broad scientific consensus is the zoonosis, according to which Sars-Cov-2 has (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/gesundheit/) jumped from an animal to a human. This is also the conclusion reached by the experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) who, after a long tug-of-war with China, researched the origin in Wuhan.
The "most likely route" of transmission to humans is from bats via another animal as an intermediate host, said WHO team leader Peter Ben Embarek at the subsequent press conference in February. The WHO experts considered a laboratory accident "extremely unlikely".
Possibility of a laboratory accident: New examination requested in an open letter
"If there is even a residual probability that makes a laboratory accident appear possible, you have to test it," emphasizes Günter Theißen, professor of genetics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, in an interview with " ntv (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.n-tv.de/wissen/Man-kann-so-ein-Virus-im-Labor-erzeugen-article22406519.html) ". Theißen is a co-signer of an open letter from (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://errorstatistics.files.wordpress.com/2021/03/covid-open-letter-final-030421-1.pdf) various scientists, which was published by the " New York (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/orte/new-york/) Times" on Thursday, among others .
The signatories call for a new, comprehensive investigation into the origin of the virus. Due to the strong influence of China (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/orte/china/) , they consider the investigations on behalf of the WHO to be "not a thorough, credible and transparent investigation". In addition to the 17 international scientists, 17 Chinese scientists were also directly involved in the WHO study. One was dependent on the information from the Chinese authorities. The results should have been approved by both teams. According to the letter, the scientific informative value is "severely impaired".
Theißen also emphasized in an interview with "ntv": "We don't want to stir up prejudices, we just want to know how it was. And there are just a lot of possibilities. But we don't have the impression that it is currently really free of prejudice like one Criminal case is determined in all directions. "
The search for origin is politically sensitive
The problem: The search for the origin of the pathogen is considered politically sensitive, as China fears that it will be denounced as the culprit for the pandemic. If the virus had actually escaped from a laboratory, compensation claims could threaten worldwide. Theißen says: "We have a lot of indications that the zoonosis hypothesis is favored because it is probably the most politically innocuous." The pandemic would therefore have a natural cause - and "there would be no one who would be directly or indirectly responsible".
He emphasizes: "Even after a year there is still no reliable evidence that Covid-19 is (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/gesundheit/) a zoonosis." He himself thinks the laboratory hypothesis is more likely. Especially because coronavirus research was carried out in Wuhan.
"You can create a virus like that in the laboratory if you want"
The Wuhan Institute for Virology (WIV) collects and processes virus samples and also conducts research with coronaviruses from bats. "There they also genetically modified these viruses and introduced them into human cells to see how they behave in them," claims Theißen. And: "You can create a virus like this in the laboratory if you want to."
But how is the corona virus (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/) supposed to have gotten (https://aevs6jem6isi4g6gurt5fba7he--www-focus-de.translate.goog/corona-virus/) to the public? Theißen can imagine that an employee would have become infected through carelessness. Possibly without symptoms and without even realizing it.
Theißen and his co-signatories are calling for a new, comprehensive investigation of the origin. And as soon as possible. "I think the truth will come out sooner or later. It's just that it can take a long time. If crucial people don't cooperate, it may take too long and we already have the next pandemic," he warns.

Considering that they were previously conducting gain of function experiments with western funding (because it was deemed too dangerous to do it in western nations' own labs), that the lab in question is suspected of conducting bioweapons research, and, given chinese culture which results in hiding the truth of screwing things up rather than upsetting the socialist harmony, a lab escape is far more likely than a simple zoonosis event.
Bottom line ,- you can *never* trust the CCP to be truthful.

Danish mask study results = masks made no difference.

Strange. In the CDC study I read again and again that public mitigation measures and wearing masks helped to slow down the pandemic, and you just summarize that as "almost worthless". Hä...?
They mentioned some confounders however, means those variabvles that maybe also may have had an effect were not controlled in the design. But rasinbf what the ylisted as confoundign variable, none of them I see to have any claim for a confusion of that mask are "almost worthless".
The danish study indicates under its conclusions that they meant surgical masks, giving them an efficient infection reduction of 50%. It calls masks a "plausible measure", and reiterates that observational studies show that masks mitigate Covid 19 infections.
In the disucssion of their results, the authors mention nthemselevs that their study has severla limitations, look these up. And add to them the reader's feedback by Carl Llor. What he says about social living realities - spacing, curfews, and a not overly crowded living enviuronbment anyway - is a relevant concern, as valid imo as the fact that the study had a dominance of subjects representing a low mask wearing adherence. These throw off the representational vale of the Danish sample for many other places in the world, including the densely populated European and American states and cities.
We have comrpable obersations in Germany. In several northern regions that are not as dersnely populated than lets say the Ruhrgebiet area, infeciton numbers and death counts were much lower for very logn time, untilt he mutations spread. The contrast between mask-wearer and non-wearers here would is not as intense as in a densely cowded city of the Ruhr area, or a metropole. The lesser density in population and trafficking travellers provides a reduction of infection opportunities and so positive effects of mask wearing will contrast less intensely against the environmental settings.
I do not udnerstand the big thing you try to make out of masks. When you sneezed before Corona, you probably were polite enough to turn away formt he toher or hold the hand before your mouth. Askl yoruslef why you did that. The basic idea of blockign or disrutping airstreams with aerosol to delay the spreading of aerosol clouds, as well as filtering more or less particles due to mesh size, si so elemental that I really do not know what is there to discuss so bitterly, in fact it is boring. It also goes pretty much selfexplanatory that the longer you stay inside an aerosol cloud, the bigger the totla particle load defeating the mnask'S mesh and so accumulating in the subjects nostirls, yew, mouth. Masks do not filter 100%, but only less. With a good mask it takes longe rtime to, and with less efficient material it takes shorter time, wearing mistakes or correct wearing not considered.
To claim form those tow studies that wearinbg amsks is "alomost useless", is a huge exaggeration. Even the Danish authors say that this should not be the conclusion.
Stop being so clever and a number junkey in bit to split hairs for proving a point. Simply apply some healthy reason instead.
And mayb elook at Asia where since almspot two decades they slow down pandemics of any kind by th epopulation showing big compliance in wearing masks. If in case of just a cold, in Japan an office employee wearing a masks in an act or respectcfully protecting others is no uncommon sight.
BTW, I do the same. Since years, though with surgical masks, not with FFP masks. A habit I copied from my mentor almost 40 years ago, who was Japanese.
With now being drugged with vitamines, I do need to do so less often, however. Where until Corona I had 3-4 colds per year, I now have not had any since 12 months. :)

My point is that the studies show reductions in the chance of being infected to be less than 2% (less than the margin of error) for the CDC study and to be statistically insignificant between the masked group and the control group (DANMASK).
This points to the fact that the public are not trained in the proper use of masks, so it's really just a psychological panacea for the vast majority. If the studies showed double digit decreases in the chance of being infected, I'd agree they are useful. Most people are not using N95s, and the masks that they are wearing, too many are wearing them incorrectly, making their use utterly worthless. Public health authorities would be better off not mandating masks because the fear of being infected would cause people to self isolate where needed and would not impact the ability of business and school to continue.

WASHINGTON—Russian intelligence agencies have mounted a campaign to undermine confidence in Pfizer Inc.’s and other Western vaccines, using online publications that in recent months have questioned the vaccines’ development and safety, U.S. officials said.
An official with the State Department’s Global Engagement Center, which monitors foreign disinformation efforts, identified four publications that he said have served as fronts for Russian intelligence.
The websites played up the vaccines’ risk of side effects, questioned their efficacy, and said the U.S. had rushed the Pfizer vaccine through the approval process, among other false or misleading claims.
Though the outlets’ readership is small, U.S. officials say they inject false narratives that can be amplified by other Russian and international media.“We can say these outlets are directly linked to Russian intelligence services,” the Global Engagement Center official said of the sites behind the disinformation campaign. “They’re all foreign-owned, based outside of the United States. They vary a lot in their reach, their tone, their audience, but they’re all part of the Russian propaganda and disinformation ecosystem.”
In addition, Russian state media and Russian government Twitter accounts have made overt efforts to raise concerns about the cost and safety of the Pfizer vaccine in what experts outside the U.S. government say is an effort to promote the sale of Russia’s rival Sputnik V vaccine.
“The emphasis on denigrating Pfizer is likely due to its status as the first vaccine besides Sputnik V to see mass use, resulting in a greater potential threat to Sputnik’s market dominance,” says a forthcoming report by the Alliance for Securing Democracy, a nongovernmental organization that focuses on the danger that authoritarian governments pose to democracies and that is part of the German Marshall Fund, a U.S. think tank.
The foreign efforts to sow doubts about the vaccine exploit deep-seated anxieties about the efficacy and side effects of vaccines that were already prevalent in some communities in the U.S. and internationally. Concern about side effects is a major reason for vaccine hesitancy, according to U.S. Census Bureau data made public last month.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied that Russian intelligence agencies were orchestrating articles against Western vaccines and said U.S. officials were mischaracterizing the broad international debate over vaccines as a Russian plot. It’s nonsense. Russian special services have nothing to do with any criticism against vaccines,” Mr. Peskov said in a telephone interview from Moscow. “If we treat every negative publication against the Sputnik V vaccine as a result of efforts by American special services, then we will go crazy because we see it every day, every hour and in every Anglo-Saxon media.”
The State Department GEC official said that four publications had direct links to Russian intelligence and were used by the Russian government to mislead international opinion on a range of issues.
New Eastern Outlook and Oriental Review, the official said, are directed and controlled by the SVR, or Russia’s foreign intelligence service. They present themselves as academic publications and are aimed at the Middle East, Asia and Africa, offering comment on the U.S.’s role in the world. The State Department said in an August report that New Eastern Outlook was linked to “state-funded institutions” in Russia.
Another publication, News Front, is guided by the FSB, a security service that succeeded the KGB, the official said. It is based in Crimea, produces information in 10 languages, and had nearly nine million page visits between February and April 2020, the official added. In August, the State Department was less explicit, saying that News Front reportedly had ties o Russia security services and Kremlin funding. Rebel Inside, the fourth publication, has been controlled by the GRU, which is an intelligence directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff. It covered riots and protests and now appears dormant, the GEC official said.
The State Department had previously not gone so far as to say that these outlets were controlled or guided by Russian intelligence agencies—an assertion that generally relies on U.S. classified intelligence.
A State Department spokesman didn’t provide specific evidence linking the publications to Russian intelligence but said the assessment was “a result of a joint interagency conclusion.”
“Russian intelligence services bear direct responsibility for using these four platforms to spread propaganda and lies,” the spokesman said. “From the very beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic last year, we have seen Russia’s disinformation ecosystem develop and spread false narratives around the crisis.” News Front, New Eastern Outlook and Oriental Review didn’t respond to requests for comment.
Social-media accounts affiliated with the four websites have largely been removed from Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Pinterest, though some non-English-language accounts remained active earlier this year.
Highlighting reports in the international media, a January article in News Front played up the risk that a person who receives the Pfizer or Moderna Inc. vaccines could contract Bell’s palsy, in which facial muscles are paralyzed, while a February article focused on a man in California that it said tested positive for Covid-19 after receiving the Pfizer vaccination. In each case, the Russian outlets were repeating actual news reports but overlooking contrary information about the general safety of the vaccine. Numerous studies and real-world data have shown the Food and Drug Administration-approved vaccines to be safe and effective, and hospitalizations and deaths have begun to plummet in places like Israel where shots have been widely administered, though a small number of side effects have been reported.
“To date, millions of people have been vaccinated with our vaccine following the endorsement of regulators in multiple countries,” said Pamela Eisele, a spokeswoman for Pfizer, who added that individuals who have questions should consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website or their healthcare provider. A spokeswoman for Moderna didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
A November article in New Eastern Outlook said that the Pfizer vaccine’s use of mRNA gene editing was “radical experimental technology” that lacked “precision” and said it was rushed through the approval process with the help of billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates and Anthony Fauci, President Biden’s chief medical adviser for the Covid-19 pandemic, both of whom the article accused of “playing fast and loose with human lives in their rush to get these experimental vaccines into our bodies.”
Some New Eastern Outlook articles have been republished by blogs and purported international news sites. One article from January alleged that the U.S. has biological labs around the world that may lead to outbreaks of infectious disease. The article was republished in full or part by websites in Bangladesh, Italy, Spain, France, Iran, Cuba and Sweden, which were reviewed by The Wall Street Journal.
The U.S. has long accused Moscow of carrying out disinformation on medical issues. Judy Twigg, a professor at Virginia Commonwealth University who is an expert on global health issues, said that the Soviet KGB had accused the CIA of spreading dengue fever in Cuba and malaria in Pakistan. “A persistent KGB campaign claimed that the U.S. Army’s former biological weapons labs at Fort Detrick had unleashed the AIDS epidemic,” she said. Soviet officials denied responsibility for this disinformation.
Thomas Rid, an expert on Russian disinformation at Johns Hopkins University who reviewed the websites cited by the State Department, said the articles were generallyin line with Russia’s “rich history” of using communications technology to deceive both international and domestic audiences. He urged the U.S. government to do more to publicly explain how it has concluded the websites are controlled by specific Russian intelligence agencies.
With Russia and China seeking to sell their vaccines abroad, overt efforts to denigrate Pfizer have been well documented. The forthcoming German Marshall Fund report, which was reviewed by the Journal and is to be issued Monday, analyzed more than 35,000 Russian, Chinese and Iranian government and state media tweets on vaccine themes from early November to early February. “Russia provided by far the most negative coverage of Western vaccines.” it states, “with a remarkable 86% of surveyed Russian tweets mentioning Pfizer and 76% mentioning Moderna coded as negative.”

Germany spends a great deal of time money and effort trying hold the E.U. together. Though it does seem at times you all have a bad rap in the E.U. for bypassing rules other E.U. members have to follow. Because of that I'm kinda of wondering if Germany is holding off until the rest of the E.U. get their vaccination programs going. Lets face it Germany isn't some backwater third world economy. If wanted to it could have finished vaccinating a large portion of its population by now. But it might look bad if some got theirs first while the rest of the E.U. was still struggling.

The UK government's top experts are appearing before MPs examining the government's roadmap for easing lockdown in England.
England's chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty says it is likely there will be another surge of the virus in the UK
Modelling suggests it could come later in the summer, as society opens up, or later in the autumn or winter, he says.
Chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance says the roadmap out of lockdown in England is "broadly" in line with scientists' recommendations.
3,196 Covid deaths were registered in the UK in the week of 26 Feb, down from 4,448 in the previous week, ONS figures show.
Covid-19 restrictions in Scotland are expected to be eased slightly to allow more people to meet outdoors.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon will update Scotland's parliament about the state of the pandemic and lockdown later.
New US guidance says fully vaccinated people can meet without masks and return to some sense of normalcy.

The number of new coronavirus cases in Poland has risen by 25% in the past week, the health ministry has said. On Tuesday, the government in Poland reported 9,954 new coronavirus cases and 282 virus-related deaths - up from 7,937 cases and 216 deaths one week ago.
Hospitals in the region around the French capital, Paris, have been told to reduce non-Covid care and surgery by 40% because the pandemic has filled most intensive care beds. Health officials say the Ile-de-France area is seeing 70 to 80 new admissions a day. Meanwhile, one MP believes veterinary surgeons could be called in to help push France’s vaccination programme. So far only 5.6% of the population has had a first dose but vaccinations are accelerating.
Estonia is facing a new lockdown from Thursday with all education going online and all non-essential shops closing. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas says the measures are required to tackle the recent spread of the UK (or Kent) variant of coronavirus and she’s appealed to people to sharply decrease contacts with others.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi has warned of a worsening health emergency, although Covid vaccines offer a way out that "isn’t far off”. Almost 14,000 new infections were reported yesterday and the total number of deaths reached 100,000.
The controversial overnight curfew in the Netherlands will remain in place for the rest of this month, but will be relaxed during next week’s parliamentary elections. Foreign travel should be avoided until mid-April, the government says.
Germans have unsurprisingly been spared hours of traffic jams because of the Covid pandemic. In Munich, the city with the worst traffic, commuters lost 65 hours last year – down from 87 hours in 2019.

I hate having to be right over and over again...
Multiple articles this morning about how lockdowns have been a disaster because they haven't stopped the spread of covid-19, they've harmed the poor, and they've caused serious psychological damage to children.
I said lockdowns were a terrible idea last April. Experts (as opposed to attention-whore no-help-whatsoever "experts" like Fauci and Neil Ferguson) were saying this last summer. How come it's taken so long for the media to report on these findings (or that a non-medical doctor like me who understands actual human behavior in the real world as opposed to theoretical human behavior in academia) instinctively understood this from the very start?

Thgey HAVE repported about these things, at leats over here, form beginning on. Its just that many people are aware that there is just more factors to be considered than your endless lament on how bad it is to take any measurements at all.
I have yet to hear how you would have tried to prevent the health systems to get overwhelmed, like in Italy last spring. And if you would claim Italian codnitions in countries were an acceptable price for saving the economy like this mass murderer Bolsonaro does for exmaple, I would be done with you.
And no, its not just the elder getting serious, heavy cases and death. Its younger ones in their 20s and 30s as well. Especially woith the latest mutant forms. Germny rpeprts a higher rate of younger ones getting hospitalised than in the first wave. So do other countries.
Decision makers need to balance economic needs against civil rights against medical system needs against health relevant facts. The more psychopathic they are, the more incompetent they are - the more murderous they so far have shown to be.
There is no way out of this that does not cost. Getting the least bad mix is what it is about. And even then every sector I mentioned above needs to bleed. It cannot be avoided. Not everybody can be pleased.
Thats why they call this a desaster, a catastrophe. Catastrophies are events that have no happy endings. If they had, they would not take place in the first.

MPs say NHS Test and Trace appears to have failed to achieve its stated aim of preventing lockdowns in England.
The Public Accounts Committee said its £37bn budget was "unimaginable" and warned the taxpayer could not be treated like an "ATM machine"
But Boris Johnson defends the programme, saying it has helped reopen schools.

This takes the total number of deaths using that measure to 124,987.
There were also 5,926 positive cases recorded in the last 24 hours.
This is down from last Wednesday when there were 315 deaths and 6,385 positive cases reported.

The number of patients in intensive care has reached a new high in the Czech Republic, as several Central European countries struggle with a new wave of the virus.
Czech authorities have started to send patients to Poland for treatment, as its facilities struggled to cope.
In Hungary the number of cases in the current wave has surpassed the previous peak in December and it has one of the highest recent fatality rates in the world.
Cases are also on the rise in Poland, where the government recorded the highest number of daily cases since late November on Wednesday, with 17,260 new infections.
The EU has been widely criticised for the slow pace of immunisations, and initial delays were partially blamed on Anglo-Swedish pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca failing to supply doses to member states.

https://www.icn.ch/news/covid-19-pandemic-one-year-icn-warns-exodus-experienced-nurses-compounding-current-shortages
A year on since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, a new International Council of Nurses (ICN) survey (https://www.icn.ch/sites/default/files/inline-files/ICN%20Policy%20Brief_Nurse%20Shortage%20and%20Rete ntion.pdf) reveals that nearly one in five of its National Nursing Associations (NNAs) surveyed report an increase in the number of nurses leaving the profession. 90% of them are ‘somewhat or extremely concerned’ that heavy workloads, insufficient resources, burn-out and stress are the factors that are driving that exodus. WHO has confirmed the mass trauma of healthcare workers, highlighted by ICN in January.
In germany this issue was reported on national levels a few days ago, thousands of nurses have left the German health care sector. For Germany, which already is very short on nurses, this becomes an increasing problem. And politicians, since years being told there is crisis looming, just babbled and still babble, but do not seriously do anything on the nurses' situation already before Corona.
There is so much phlegmatism in Germany. It was complaien dbaout that the schools are ill-equipped for digital home learning. When the lockdown came, there would have been another (!) chance to increase ambitions an measures there, also to equip classrooms with alternative air suppy concpets, filtering, whatever. But when the kids returtned to school, conditons had not chnaged one bit in these regards. Like the years before, the alst motnhsd and year also have been passively wasted. But a coinbference (another one) has been announced to discuss the issue (as if it would be the first one).
The government is on so many levels guilty of refusal to work. Everythign moves like being placed in stiff, glibbery jelly that pushes every movement you make back into its starting position. But after that he increasingly started to become known for dubious theories and statements, culminating in claims on Corona that long since have been refuted time and again, and has simply joined the side of conspriation theoreticists wandering through talk shows with pseudo-scientific revelations that are in simple ignorration of proving scientific evidences demonstrating the opposite of his claims and debts.
He was a very respected medical scientists, once. But as an old man, he did not manage to keep his narcissism under control, me thinks, and reminds me of an elder person that, like many other elder, cannot accept to not be right, and stubbornly tries to push his subjective interperation of reality through, no matter what. In Germany, he now is seen as a "Lachnummer" (laughing stock?). Except by conspiration theoretists and corona deniars, of course.

Just want to clarify here there is no president in this country that can order states to make vaccines available to all adults by a certain date. Especially under the Emergency Use Act which prohibits any state from purchasing the vaccine directly. It might better presented if it read: Biden ordered the Federal government to purchase enough vaccines and have it distributed in time so that each state can vaccinate all adults by May 1st.

Damn who knew the E.U. actually had a strategy ;)
Why the EU’s Vaccine Strategy Will Pay Off in the End
https://carnegieeurope.eu/strategiceurope/83777
... In hindsight, the EU should probably have invested more in ramping up production capacity at an early stage—but the process involved a lot of uncertainty, because nobody knew which vaccine would be effective in the end. Don't feel bad Trump was criticized for the same thing. :D
Also, in order to reassure a partly vaccine-sceptic European public, the EU—unlike the UK—did not resort to emergency procedures but insisted on full certification of the vaccines through the European Medicines Agency.
Nobody can answer this question conclusively, but it seems likely that—for the EU as a whole—the collective approach will pay off in the end. Without it, the pharmaceutical companies would have been in a stronger negotiating position vis-à-vis individual member states. Vaccines would have been more expensive and supply more uncertain, particularly for the smaller and poorer member states.
As far as one can tell—since most of the contracts remain secret—it used the market power of the EU to secure favorable conditions on pricing and liability.Would have loved to be a fly on the wall during those liability negotiations. If Im not mistaken we just threw money at the problem and allowed big pharma to operate carte blanche

I would not give too mucz for that liability claim, considering how poorly they obviously have negotiated and worded the treatyx with Astra Zeneca, which left them legally helpless and reduced to just raising claims that mostly are n ot true, and appealing to the good in mankind.
And they saved money with their long winter sleep? Well, hardly as much as they are now wasting every day for paying for that continued lockdown. Would the vaccines have costed 4-7 billion that Germany spends on its economic lockdown EVERY WEEK...?
They messed it up, every single thing in what they did. Completely, totally, and without limits. And the responsible political top has nothing better to do than to deflect, deflect, deflect.
This all has insanely accelerated the implosion of the current financial system.

Europeans, like many others across the world, hoped for a better and happier year in 2021 - after seemingly endless months of Covid illness, deaths and pandemic-linked economic misery.
But so far, so annus horribilis for the EU. On a number of Covid fronts.
The bloc's by now infamous vaccination procurement scheme - trumpeting the securing of up to 2.6 billion doses - has so far failed to deliver. EU countries lag significantly behind Israel, the UK and the US in getting jabs into arms.
A number of EU members have stumbled nationally, too, with heavily criticised roll-outs of the vaccines they did manage to obtain, in Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria and beyond.

See, Catfish - I never expected anything different than a rumble in the snakepit when the game was opened. Of course other governments see it as "My people first, for I am their government and it is my damn duty to serve their survivability as best as I can." The US does it. Russia does it. The UK does it. And I call them not foul for it, I would do exactly the same thing if I were in their shoes. Neither Johnson nor Biden nor Putin owes anything to the EU and the people ij European countries, they work to get THEIR people vaccinated, as best and quickly as possible, and they do whatever is needed to get that thing done.
The sin of the EU and the Germans is that they still do not understand this and play a gallant romantic comedy of "everybody being solidaric and sees his own people dying to please the folks somewhere else". And up to the gallow I send them.
For ever vaccine-producing nation the policy can only be this: "F### fair play. Our people first. When our people are vaccinated, THEN we can talk about keep on producing and sending the doses then to the others. "
How could anyone have expected anything different happening...???
The EU continues to give erratic tales on how to interpret formulations in the AZ treaty deal, and yes, it probably is being outplayed by the other actors and now gets even less. Thats what happens when you enter a match of rough, dirty Rugby with an attitude of wanting to play a round of distinguished Golf. You get your fancy sunday clothes ruined. Pathetic.
Again: if a government sends doses it can get control of to other nations instead of vaccinating its own people, this government then rules that its own people should suffer and die to some degree to serve the interests of other nation'S citizens. Thats making a joke of its duties. A country's government is not responsible to the citizens of foreign nations, but is towards its own citizens.
Cry as much as you want, Catfish - these are the facts. This is the realaity. Its hard, its brutal, but its the only reality you will get. And the world is not different than this, so either adapt and deal with it, or continue to complain about the world not being how you dream it should be, and tailoring your advise for an illusion that is not real. The strong do what they can. The weak suffer what they must. The EU claims weakness is a virtue. The EU is wrong.
Once again.

Germany, France and Italy have halted rollouts of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, after a series of incidents in Europe involving blood clots.
They join several smaller European nations who have halted vaccinations as a precaution while checks are made.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is no evidence that the incidents are caused by the vaccine.
It said it was reviewing reports relating to the jab, but it was important vaccinations continued.
It was good practice to investigate potential adverse events, it added.
The WHO's vaccine safety experts are meeting on Tuesday to discuss the jab.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) will meet on the same day and is due to draw conclusions on Thursday. It has also said the vaccine should continue to be used.
There have been a number of cases in Europe of blood clots developing after the vaccine was administered.
However, experts say the number of blood clots reported after the vaccine were no more than those typically reported within the general population.
About 17 million people in the EU and the UK have received a dose of the vaccine, with fewer than 40 cases of blood clots reported as of last week, AstraZeneca said.

Ver yunlikely. Her ein Germany the health minister and the Merkel gang are alreeady under unbelievable pressure and just got kickedjumoed into the stpocmahc twice durign elecitons on the bweekend, the joke of a vaccination campaign alreacy has kicked htme into the slumps. Intentionally risking to fuel even more of that by conspriring with the Russians? I rule that practically out.
The point, as far as I understood it, is this. There is a usual rate of thrombosis patients per 100k population, but amongst the vaccinated, in close time to when they got the jab, six times more people get trombosis. In total these are not many, but methodologically it neverthelkess are six times more than amongst the non vaccinated. And similair raitosn were found in Italy, France, Netherland and other coutnries.
This must be examined. And they look closely now becasue the whole developement of the AZ vaccine has had the worm in it from day one on, and AZ lied abotu it, and the British govenrment lied about iut and th emedia lied about it, since early last summer, again anbd again. There were several things that went wrong in the vaccine'S developement and delayed, even stopped test trials.
Wjhether thery couldnt tst that while keep on vacicnating, is another quesiton. But they are under so much - self-risen - pressure now that they are damned if they do and damned if they don't.
Minding everybody: blood cloths and thrombosis complications are a major concern in serious causes of Covid. And this in a vaccine that already has unusually severe vaccination symptoms anyway.
However, even if I fit into your reply scheme above, I still think the Russian vaccine is one of the best there currently is. I would not mind taking it. It indeed would be my currently preferred choice - if I had a choice, that is.
All this could be different again of course next season, next year.

IMO the new COVID vaccine is no different than all the others before it and prove the anti-vaxer's point. There are risks with all vaccinations, hell I remember when I was in boot camp getting vaccinated. I saw two recruits out of 50 drop like fly's because of an acute reaction to the doses they received.

There were 13,107 deaths registered in the UK in the week of 5 March, 3% above the usual level for this time of year.
Last week, they were 9% above usual levels.
2,279 of these deaths involved Covid-19, down by 920 on the previous week.
Statisticians advise that the weekly death figure can rise and fall by 5% due to chance variation, so this is within the “normal range” of deaths for early March in a non-pandemic year.
With vaccinations of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine on hold in much of Europe, European eyes are now on the EU’s medicines regulator EMA, which has so far insisted it’s safe and should still be used. EMA safety experts are reviewing latest information today and will update their advice on Thursday. Latvia, Slovenia and Cyprus have become the latest to suspend use of the jab.
A German vaccination summit of federal and state leaders planned for tomorrow has been postponed until the EMA updates its advice. Meanwhile, Germany’s public health agency has warned that infections there are rising exponentially.
France’s health authorities are investigating a new Covid variant at the centre of a cluster of cases in Lannion in Brittany. While all vaccines have risks for sideffects, they vary in frequency and inbtensity, and the AZ vaccines score sunusually high in both.
The risk for brain thrombosis is 6 times elevated than would be expected in a population that did not take the jab. Statistically this is extremely alarming. They HAD to react to this.
The counter argument is that non-vaccinating probbaly kills more than thrombosis risks. The second coutner-arugment is that like with the lacking documentation of the trials for over 65 year old and so a delayed licensing of the jab led to public antipathy to the vaccine, this story now again likely will raise public antipathy to AZ.
However, these are self-made AZ-monsters. Its their own fault, and only theirs. The company, I really must say this now after one year of illustrating how poorly they did their trials (that were ridden with problems form beginning on! ;) ), shone with lying olver thre goin g of trials and the causes of patients problems, they did an underwhelming job in trial documentaiton, did not care sufficnetly to cover the higher age grouos in those number trials, and always says "Its not us."
Poltical interventions by the British and probaly the Us goverbnment to the disadvanatge of the European continent may not be the fault of AZ, but adds to the messy reputation they now have.
Fact remains that the AZ vaccine has more often more serious sideffects and immune reacitons than ayny other Covid vaccine, or any other of the commonly used vaccines not dealing with Covid.
Myself, I would expect a heavier reaction by my body if I take the AZ vaccine,m too. If my health strategy of supplementing for increased immune system strength works as I intend (andrecent blood tests tell this might very well be the case), then my immune system should drive its fangs and teeth deep into the bait offered, the vaccine, and accordingly heavy the reaciton I would expect to be.
I would take the AZ if it is the first vaccine I could get. But it is really not my first choice. By the numbers published so far, and assuming these numbers were honest, I would prefer the Russian, currently. I said it already weeks ago: the Russians have a very hot iron in the fire. Cheaper, easier to handle and to store, less alarming side effects, protection and efficiency numbers up en par with the best of the others competitors.

Of course there is risk it has been shown time and time again ever since people have been getting jabbed in the arm with vaccines. Hell, I think 43 people die each year in the U.S. from complications of the regular flu vaccine. Yet we push on.
But not the European Union political clown show. Oh hell no, now they have politicized it and continue its anti-science, antivaxer, hysteria campaign now intent on discrediting others vaccine programs. Sowing doubt worldwide. With other pathogens such as HIV (the AIDS pathogen) or tuberculosis, this has not worked so far after decades of research, with influenza, the causative agent of the real flu, only inadequately (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD001269.pub6/full) : the vaccination does not protect against death from virus pneumonia, but only alleviates it Severity of the course.
We know from a very large retrospective vaccination study from Israel that BTN162b can also alleviate the mild course, but cannot influence (https://7zel5hauggsbji3ebkpftcmgk4--www-achgut-com.translate.goog/artikel/was_zeigt_die_israel_studie_zum_biontech_pfizer_im pfstoff_) the severe course, the need for hospitalization or death . In terms of its effectiveness, it is comparable to that of influenza vaccines. However, the COVID vaccines in the USA do not have regular FDA approval, only an Emergency Use Approval (EUA). Why?
Because the benefit-risk profile for them was not determined over several years, as usual, but the development process, which normally takes at least 5 to 6 years, was carried out in 9 months. As a result, the toxicity of the vaccine has been poorly studied. The approval was politically forced against the concerns of the authorities in the USA, also in Europe and many other countries. A low acute toxicity was expected from the manufacturer's approval studies, but this has now been refuted.
In addition to the "vaccination debacle" currently being lamented in the media, the Center of Disease Control in the USA has data on the acute toxicity of the vaccines used in the USA, which are collected via the VAERS reporting system (https://translate.google.com/website?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https://vaers.hhs.gov/data.html) for vaccine side effects. So far, this data has not had much resonance in the media because the matter is relatively difficult to understand. A closer look at the data is, to put it mildly, very worrying.
It shows that from December 2020 to early March 2021, more than 1,500 people died shortly after the COVID vaccinations, while 92 million doses of mRNA vaccine were vaccinated. In the whole of 2019, according to VAERS, there were 45 deaths from all vaccines, in 2018 there were 40, in 2017 only 27, with hundreds of millions of vaccine doses against numerous pathogens given every year.
What do these data from the VAERS say? It's raw data. But more than 15 out of 1 million vaccinees have died so soon after vaccination since the start of the COVID vaccination campaign that the vaccinating doctor suspected a connection between vaccine and vaccination and reported the death. Of course, not all of these deaths are causally caused by the vaccines. Often moribund (dying) patients are currently vaccinated because the COVID hysteria is so great.
But even if one generously calculates this effect and assumes only 1,000 deaths by the beginning of March 2020, there are still 10 deaths per million vaccinated and 20 to 30 times more vaccination deaths in 3 months (beginning of December 2020 to beginning of March 2021) than usual per year . A good 6 percent of the dead are under 60, i.e. in the group in which almost no one dies from COVID. These people were simply killed by the vaccination without any medical rationale. Because the vaccine not only does not help against the death of the elderly (99 percent of all COVID deaths), it probably also has only a small effect on contagion (risk of infection from an infected person), which is an argument in favor of vaccinating young people Used by people under 60.
This shows that the mRNA-based vaccines are at least 10 times more toxic than the usual upper limit (1 death per 1 million vaccinees), but probably even 20 to 30 times more toxic than any other approved vaccine. If you extrapolate the deaths in the first three months of vaccination with a factor of three, because we have only had three months of vaccination behind us (actually factor 4, but the USA does not have that many inhabitants), the result would be more than 4,000 deaths, then the mRNA would be Vaccines up to 100 times more toxic than all other vaccines combined. The chronic toxicity (autoimmune diseases and encephalitis caused by the vaccine particles) is not yet known, it will only appear and become measurable in 6 to 18 months, because autoimmune diseases - including those triggered by vaccines - progress slowly. That was also one of the main reasons the FDA refused regular approval.
Meanwhile, in Germany:
According to government sources, the federal government had no alternative to temporarily suspending vaccinations with the Astrazeneca vaccine for legal reasons. According to the Paul Ehrlich Institute, the news agency Reuters learned from government circles in Berlin that personal injury lawsuits would otherwise have threatened because it is a state vaccination campaign.

Meanwhile, in Germany:
I think the single biggest concern in that article is what isn't being said - that the *best* efficacy of the flu vaccine in the last 10 years is 60% and the average is 39.9%. If the covid vaccine is an annual, the efficacy *will* decrease and then stabilize (probably at a similar level as for the flu vavccine) as pharma has to figure out which strains are going to be prevalent the following year.
Is an average efficacy of barely 40% worth what appears to be a significant risk of severe adverse reactions to the vaccine resulting in injury or death?

The EU’s medicines agency will give Europeans this afternoon its decision on the safety of the Oxford-AstraZeneca drug, after 15 countries suspended its use over a small number of blood clots. On Tuesday the agency said the benefits of the drug outweighed the risks of side effects. The World Health Organization says there's no proven link and the leaders of Italy and France say they’ll resume using the vaccine quickly if it’s given the green light.
French leaders will this evening announce new measures aimed at slowing a “third wave” of Covid. A year after France’s first lockdown, Prime Minister Jean Castex will announce additional curbs from this weekend for the greater Paris and northern Hauts-de-France regions.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi will take part in a memorial ceremony in Bergamo this morning as part of a national day to remember more than 100,000 Covid victims. Bergamo is heavily symbolic for Italians as it was where military trucks were pictured last year transporting coffins out of the city.
A Danish study suggests 80% of people who catch Covid are protected against further infection, although immunity falls after six months. But the study of PCR tests by the Statens Serum Institute also finds that only 47% of over-65s have the same protection. Researcher Steen Ethelberg says even if you have had Covid it would be a good idea to get vaccinated.

German scientists say they found the reason for the thrombosis complications that temporarily had stopped the vaccination with AZ in several European countries.
Der Spiegel writes:
The University Medical Center Greifswald has now broken down the likely cause of the blood clots. According to Andreas Greinacher, he and his team found special antibodies in the blood of those affected, which are directed against the body's own blood platelets. These cells play an important role in blood clotting. The antibodies activate the platelets: they clump together, as they normally do to close a wound, and thus form blood clots. The basic problem is therefore an autoimmune reaction.
In Germany, 13 cases of sinus vein thrombosis were reported shortly after an AstraZeneca vaccination, all of which were associated with a lack of blood platelets, i.e. a so-called thrombocytopenia. Around 1.6 million people in Germany were vaccinated.
According to Greinacher, the problems that arose shortly after the vaccination are similar to a long-known complication with the administration of another agent, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, or HIT for short. There, too, antibodies activate platelets so that clots form. In both cases the symptoms appear within 5 to 14 days after administration of the preparation.
--
Females in general are more often affected by auto-immune diseases than males, and in the main its the older people and nurses who are being vaccinated so far. Most nurses are females. This may explain why so many women are amongst the thrombosis victims.

Rockstar, I just claim for myself that I am certainly very unsuspicious of liking and defending the EU, this forum gives many evidences for the opposite :) , but the AZ stop is not the EU's fault, not this time. In fact the European nations that had temporarily halted the vaccination with AZ, did so against the explicit advise and recommendation and desire of the EU. And while the stop lasted, the EU repeatedly urged to continue with the vaccinaiton and said it thinks the AZ is okay. The claimed issues should be examined (and rightly so, they are valid medical concerns), but the vaccination should continue, thats what the EU wanted.
National decisions. Not EU decisions, not on this topic. In the end, health policy is nothing the EU has a legitimate and legal mandate over, it just tries to ursurp such authoritiy as well. But legally, health policy in Europe is exclusively national responsibility, not EU responsibility. Thats a legal fact. ;)

The UK reports 17 Covid deaths on Monday - the lowest daily figure since late September.
Almost 28 million people have now had a first dose of a vaccine.
But a third wave of Covid in Europe is likely to "wash up" on UK shores, the prime minister warns.
EU leaders will hold a virtual meeting on Thursday to discuss a vaccine exports and supply.
Health minister Lord Bethell says it’s possible the UK might have to put all its European neighbours on the 'red list' from which entry to the UK is banned.
The long-awaited US trial of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab confirms the shot is both safe and highly effective.
India records 260,000 fresh cases in a week - one of the worst increases since the pandemic began early last year.
The opposition presidential candidate in Congo-Brazzaville, who was seriously ill with Covid-19, dies hours after polls close.

A minute's silence is held to remember the victims of Covid-19
Tuesday marks the first anniversary of lockdown being called in the UK
The Queen has sent flowers to a London hospital where Prince Philip was treated recently with a message saying it is a day to "reflect on the grief and loss"
People are also being encouraged to stand on their doorsteps with lights at 20:00 GMT, as part of a national day of reflection.
Weekly coronavirus death figures in England and Wales are at their lowest since October, national statistics show.
But across the pandemic, there have been 147,681 deaths in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate; 126,172 within 28 days of a positive test.
The government is considering making vaccines for care home staff compulsory, Matt Hancock says.
Germany extends its lockdown to 18 April and will shut down almost completely over the Easter holiday from 1-5 April to slow soaring infections.
The virus that causes the common cold can effectively boot the Covid virus out of the body's cells, say researchers.

Germany is extending its current lockdown to 18 April and shutting down almost completely over the Easter holiday from 1-5 April to slow down soaring infections. Chancellor Angela Merkel and state leaders had hoped to loosen the lockdown, but she said they had to “break the exponential growth of the third wave”. Over five days at Easter, only food shops can open for one day on Saturday 3 April and no more than five adults from two households can meet. The slogan is “We’re staying at home”. A further 7,485 infections and 250 deaths have been announced in the past 24 hours.
Spain’s ministry of health has approved extending the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to everyone up to the age of 65 after initially restricting it to under 55s including key workers such firefighters, police and teachers. AZ vaccinations are to resume in Spain tomorrow after a short suspension for safety checks. The jab will also be extended to over-65s if it’s backed by a national health panel.
While many European countries are seeing a third Covid wave, Denmark has escaped that and its political leaders have agreed a gradual plan to reopen the country. Schools and professions such as hairdressers will start opening up after Easter. A corona pass is being introduced to show whether you have been vaccinated or have a negative test.
The Czech death toll from the pandemic has passed 25,000. In a separate milestone, a million Czechs have now had at least one dose of vaccine, out of a population of 10.7 million.
French hospitals have admitted another 471 patients into intensive care in 24 hours, and another 15,792 cases have been reported. The total number in intensive care is over 4,500.
Bosnia has reported a record 73 daily coronavirus deaths. The capital Sarajevo and majority ethnic-Serb region, Republika Srpska, are both in lockdown.

Immunizations and accompanying documentation have always been required when applying for a visa. I traveled with mine knowing I could be asked for it in country. Only change I see on the horizon would be immunization records for domestic travel.
Interesting little tidbit from U.S. Health and Human Services website
How far in advance should I get vaccinated before traveling?
It’s important to get vaccinated at least 4 to 6 weeks before you travel. This will give the vaccines time to start working, so you’re protected while you’re traveling. It will also usually make sure there’s enough time for you to get vaccines that require more than 1 dose.
Something to keep in mind after getting your COVID shot.

The Washington Examiner's Byron York summarizes (https://twitter.com/ByronYork/status/1373282670755643397) the findings with three take-aways: First, "Trump's leadership on vaccine was vastly better than anyone in Europe." Second, "when it came to a vaccine, Britain was smart to leave the EU." Third, elite opinion was "dreadfully wrong" on both counts. Europe in permanent crisis - prevention logic and entrepreneurship
(ANDREAS TÖGEL) No end of the pandemic in sight. The governments of Euroland have been fighting the virus for more than a year - so far with fairly manageable success. The bankruptcy of the vaccination campaign that is simply not gaining momentum exacerbates the problem because it continues the - presumably unsuitable - means of imposing lockdowns.
Thousands of companies are going under, hundreds of thousands are losing their wages. Politics mercilessly turn them into charity recipients. Using a medicine - in the case of a pandemic this is the lockdown - that shows itself ineffectiveness anew every day does not, however, show any particular wisdom. The responsible politicians and “experts” don't care, because their jobs and incomes are not affected. The fact that (almost) everyone around the world is using the same questionable strategy doesn't make matters any better.
Corona, however, offers politicians a welcome opportunity to elegantly divert attention from the mistakes they have made in the past. Regardless of the pandemic, Euroland has been suffering from structural weaknesses for many years (to be precise: since the Maastricht Treaty, which came into force in 1992), which the epidemic only exacerbates but does not cause. There are already increasing voices from economists who are addressing the lack of growth in the eurozone and clearly naming its causes.
In a conversation with “Agenda Austria”, Gabriel Felbermayr, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, draws attention to the fact that the EU does not even manage to allow growth. He sees the risk that Euroland could fall even further behind the USA and China economically in the wake of the Corona crisis. At the same time, the recovery in China would drive up raw material prices and inflation would be imported from the USA. All developments that had a negative impact on the European economy. The economist attributes the low economic dynamism in Euroland to the “prevention logic” practiced there, which has been gaining ground more and more for years.
Indeed, the main difference between the EU and its international competitors is that the political class is less interested in enabling and more on preventing entrepreneurial activity. Not necessarily planned, and sometimes even supported by good intentions, but nonetheless harmful. The "energy turnaround" in Germany, which has long since failed, the brutal struggle of left-wing ecological forces against the omnipresent "climate change" and the European (automotive) industry, as well as the focus on orchid issues such as politically correct language, anti-discrimination and the relentless fight against the allegedly ubiquitous racism are examples.
Under the current conditions, who should take it upon himself to become entrepreneurial when he has just been shown that the government is always willing and able to deprive him of his economic basis with the stroke of a pen? Industry examples: gastronomy, hotel, event industry, travel agencies and fitness centers. In view of gloomy future prospects and completely lost legal and planning security, who is still interested in fighting through a jungle of authorities to be allowed to practice a simple trade? The density of regulation - and the socialists in all parties simply do not want to understand this - is nowhere in the world more hostile to business than in the EU.
However, Felbermayr sees one of the structural problems in Europe that can hardly be solved in the increasing aging of the continent. Old people are always careful to preserve what they have achieved and do not place any value on change - also and certainly not as far as the economic framework conditions and their supposedly “well-acquired rights” are concerned. They are deeply structurally conservative and successfully prevent - thanks to their demographic and thus political preponderance - they can - the “creative destruction” that characterizes every market economy.
Since the young people most affected by the decline of Europe today, unlike the rabid 1968ers at one time, show no inclination or inclination to demand that their interests be safeguarded - such as enabling and promoting a new start-up offensive that offers them promising future prospects - the decline is likely to occur of the Old World even after the pandemic has subsided. The prospects for the old world are not good.

29 million doses of the aZU vaccine have been found in a storage site in Italy. They are (were?) meant for export to the UK, produced in the Netherlands and bottled in Italy.
Report first was released by La Stampa and later confirmed towards German DPA. La Stampa wrote that AZ has deliberatly not told the EU of the existence of this storage.
The discovery is explosive because Astrazeneca is very far behind in deliveries to the European Union. Instead of up to 220 million cans, the company wants to deliver only 100 million to the EU states by the middle of the year. Most recently, the vaccine manufacturer promised to deliver 30 million doses to the EU in the first quarter - roughly equivalent to the number of doses found in Italy.
Lets face it, even if the EU negotiated terribly bad with AZ - and others - and signed an hilariously lousily worded treaty (that in a comment was practically destroyed by the head of the German industry association who ridiculed the incompetence and naivety of the EU in signing such a set of legally failed formulations), AZ has done what it can to destroy its reputation, and they started with that already during their phase 1 trials in late rSpring and early summer last year. By now I rate their trustworthiness as exaclty nill point nill nill.
The UK play it tough, and from their POV they must do it. I am excited to see what happens now, whether the EU gets is remaining sense of realism together and plays it tough, too, or again betrays the people of the European states. The US rations exports of vaccines. Russia does it. The UK does it. China does it. They all use vaccines as a political tool of foreign politics. Time to wake up, EU - your super-idealist intention not only has failed, but had no chance from beginning on. And you could have known that: if only you would have wanted.
My logic often ticks surprisingly simple. If you get hit, hit back, and carry on hitting until the other stops hitting you.

The UK and EU say they are working on creating a "win-win" situation to expand vaccine supply for all citizens.
A joint statement says co-operation is "even more important" as Europe faces a third wave of coronavirus.
The European Union has put forward proposals to tighten controls on the export of Covid vaccines amid a row over supplies.
Under the plans any shipment of vaccine would be assessed on the country's rate of vaccinations and vaccine exports.
But the European Commission has denied that stricter controls amount to an export ban.
A further 98 people have died within 28 days of a positive coronavirus in the UK
Brazil has recorded more than 3,000 new daily coronavirus deaths for the first time.
PM Boris Johnson says the UK may have to "take action if necessary" on travel from France "very soon" due to a rising number of cases there.
UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer says a public inquiry into the government's handling of the pandemic should be held when restrictions are eased.

The European Commission will announce proposals this morning to toughen controls on Covid vaccine exports. They will stop short of an export ban but instead measure each shipment on the recipient country’s vaccine rate and exports. The controls will assess “reciprocity” and “proportionality” and are likely to affect the UK and US most. The plans will be discussed by EU leaders tomorrow.
Germany’s RKI public health agency says 75,000 people have now died in the country’s Covid pandemic. Another 15,813 new infections have been reported in the past 24 hours which is higher than a week ago.
Finnish ministers have spent eight hours trying to reach an agreement on toughening measures to stop the spread of a third wave of Covid. Health officials have backed restrictions on movement but in the end they limited their move to extending a three-week closure of indoor dining in restaurants.
Spain is resuming vaccinations with the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine today after an eight-day suspension over safety concerns. The Spanish government will decide this afternoon whether to impose new restrictions over Easter early next month as infections are rising again.
Italy’s cases are increasing even faster with 18,765 reported in 24 hours yesterday. Prime Minister Mario Draghi will discuss measures to be introduced after Easter on 6 April. Despite the situation, ministers want to ease restrictions, particularly focusing on early years in schools.
Ukraine has reported a record 342 daily deaths, and also a record number of people taken to hospital in the past day. And Bulgaria has seen a record 4,851 cases in the past 24 hours. Restrictions were tightened last week, with restaurants closed and schools going online.
Students in the Serbian city of Kragujevac have been offered vaccinations with the AstraZeneca drug without an appointment. But since the campaign began yesterday no-one has shown up. Officials believe bad publicity may be to blame.

"Clearly, the prime minister was actually referring to the work that has taken place with pharmaceutical companies and how we have led the way really in this vaccine development," said Patel, who was not in the meeting.
Not that I have anything against what he said, I just found it funny he spoke his mind and in my opinion the truth. Then unfortunately backtracked. Nothing wrong speaking ones mind especially if its the truth. Capitalism and some greed (U.K. first priority) obviously got the job done.

No, I woudl have. instead I have posted in the past that ANY price the proiducers would have demanded would have been mich cheaper still than the endlessly climbing heap of costs due to lockdown costs.
The initiave for getting the EU involved, came from Berlin, Brussels and Paris.
The exmaple of the UK and the US, both with terrible and starts into the corona crisis and now having surpassed us in handling it and having us left behind in their dust, shows the irrelevance of your idea that 27 countries would have gone after each others throats. We now have severla states that have left the EU consensus behind and do their own pirvate deals with Israel, and China. This behaviour ridicules the claimed power and competence of the EU, and Brussels is not happy again.
You remember how Israel boasted with how perfectly and fast their vaccination worked? Well first they paid the ten-fold price per dose
NA UND...???
We pay in germany severla billions every week for the consequence sof the bogged down vaccination "campaign". We pay much more than they do, and we get much less effect! Whose finances are better invested here, theirs or ours...?? The nIsraelis get mucz cheaper off with their strategy than we do.
Within the last 48 hours there was some story in one of our newspapers that was about that if the EU would have ordered early and paid the demanded prices, it would have paid much more, yes. But even the total costs of getting two doses for every citizen of a stste that is EU member were equal to the total costs of then lockdown in all Europe per one week. Now do the math. Leave me alone with your concerns about the Corona vaccine. I recommend that yiou compare the prices for them to the prices for other vaccines that get used by prutine toda yins chools, in flu season, the most used vaccinbes. Quite somne ofn them, used by routine and in huge numbers, are more expensive than any of the Corona jabs! I linked to a cost comparision I think ten days ago or so.
, second they have a complete registry about every single citizen in their only ONE small state, something which would not go well with privacy being used to in the UK, EU or America. If the latest events in germany show one thing, than that in crisis our federal system is a mess to manage a crisis, Corona shows clearly the limits of capabilities of our state system. And we add even more worse thigns to this inbuild limit, because the US compares in its federl structure to Germany, Germany was in a way modelled in structure after the American state model - and nevertheless the US, after the orange timeout, gets things done much better now and for some mysterious reasons has vaccine doses. Plenty of them. And gets them into peoples' arms, something that our state cannot get done in impressive numbers, and instead insisting on endlessly regulating it, and not even planning needed measures ahead in time. Incapable idiots. An old man in the house where my parents live, got his jab. It took him three online forms, four telephone calls, and in the centre he had to pass through a windmill of eight (!) assistants, each time being at risk, before he finally got somebody who vaccinated him. Some days ago a read a comoarable story, with even higher numbers in it, in some newspaper. In other countries you can get jabbed on the fly, in supermarkets, in the pedestrian zone, in your car in a vaccnation drive-in. Typical, hopeless German "Bräsigkeit". Immer schön nach endloser Papiervorschrift.
Hilarious. Unbearable self-fixiation of the hierarchy.
I get it, you do neither like Merkel nor von der Leyen, well you would be astonished how much people i do not like. But Johnson just made it to the top.Afte rhavign messed upo the start, he now does the Corona ciris tango much, much better than our personell could even just hiope to. He gets his people vaccinated in accord and in record time. He does what it takes. Thats both infinitly more than cpuld be said about The German minsiter poresidents, Spahn, Merkel, or the gang in Brussel. They are just complaining that all they see of the impertinent British are their red rear lights in a far distance.
Again, for this failure of theirs, european people die in bigger numbers than would have been needed, and more business and companies get ruined than was unavoidable. The financial costs is much much higher, too.
Sorry, but I am not willing to leave a single good hair on on the German and EU crisis management. Total failure on the broadest front. Merkels stunt now is just the last of an fearsome long list of political mistakes she has made an the past 15 years.

So if we go by the above chart then greedy, enlightened self interest capitalism IS good.
Makin' money AND savin' lives :yeah:
On a side note China may have a vaccine too. But how much you want to bet their government has absolutely interest in ensuring everyone of their citizens is vaccinated?

Real funny. Shall we talk about what YOUR land is known for?
Oh there are a few positive traits and history, but even so what does this have to do with me? Do i hold you personally accountable for the invention of the Edison bulb, or for centuries of slavery and indian reservations or Guantanamo?
And i do like most of Elgar's works, having one of the Proms' concerts live CD maybe meanwhile i heard it a bit too often. And I was referring to Rockstar's "greed" post as the arrow indicated :D
I do not think that greed is good, ambition is.

Ambition comes not from nothing. Greed can be one of its motivators.
Greed coupled with self control. That is it. Like gas and brake pedal in a car.

So you are perfectly ok with the UK and Astra Zenca breaking the treaty?
Fot the umpteenth time: The AZ vaccine delivery commitment of the UK and the EU are exactly the same.
"Where there may be a significant difference is in which markets the drug company is prioritizing. Soriot confirmed to La Repubblica that his company had agreed to supply the UK before other markets, saying it was "fair enough" because the UK had reached an agreement with AstraZeneca earlier than the EU. But the UK's official contract is actually dated August 28, one day after the EU's contract."
Johnson supported this and tried to hide the treaty
"British officials had earlier declined to provide the contract to CNN, making no mention of the redacted version, and have repeatedly refused to give details on the country's vaccine supplies, citing "security reasons." A junior UK government minister said in a recent interview that publishing the contract would risk national security."
So you cheer that one side broke the treaty and proposed a tit for tat, so the EU behave in the same manner. Maybe it should. The yellow press and Murdoch's smear campaigns are up and running anyway, so why not :hmmm:

I am not respnsible for the eU's decision to dreamdance through surreally ambitioned negotiations and not payong closest attention to the preicse wording of the treaties it signs.
The UK does, different to the EU, what it has to do to prtect its citiezns and get the stuff into their arms.
Come. What. May.
And thats how it is to be done under these circumstances.
Paper and ink, ideals and ambitions will do nothign for you. Only will power, detemrination and ongoing drive. All of whcih the pltlical actors i berlin and Brussel are terribly lacking - instead demandign the tohers to demaage their citizens so to help decieving their own over our leaderships failure.
You are dreaming of a different world, Catfish. Eat or get eaten. As de Gaulle said: "States have no friends. States have interests." Live with it or protest against it, it does not matter, you will not change it. And the more youn want to reglate things for the beter in your definition, the more you become an evil yourself, not different than that you claim to fight against.
Note that Grmany not only fails in vaccination. We even fail in mass testing now. Nothing works together. We still babble about needing to prepare testing and get started next onth, or the mont after - others already test like crazy, again having us left in the dust.
The brits had a terrible and awful start. Now they lead, and by a huge margin. And thereby make the morally lamenting EU looking ridiculous. Other EU natios have the nose full of it, too, try to cooperate with Israel, China, Russia.
The eU will get out of this all severly damaged and with a huge loss of remaingn trust and a huge growth of scepticism. I like that. Im not sorry.
P.S. You must not endlessly quote that treaty and the times of signing it. I was the first in this forum posting it, when it became known. Still Johnson somehow managed to get the good stuff, and it is not relevant whether he complies with rules or not: becasue he gets his people vaccinated, and that is what must count for any government. You better do not call out the breaking of rules if you have not the power to sanction the breaching of them, you make look yourself pathetic that way.
What I mean is: neither moral nor appeal are repclament for strength and potence to act - no matter what the others does, says, wants, claims. The strong has the degrees of freedom to chose. He can do somehtign or he can choose not to do it. The weak has this decision freedom not, he suffers what he must. And states moral tirades.
I am not one bit surprised that China, Russia, USA, UK play it tough. I never expected anything else than right this.

I beg your pardon?
Again EU and UK signed the same treaties with Astra Zeneca, the EU even before. So the UK playing foul is perfectly ok and it is all the EU's fault because it followed signed treaties? Everyone for himself, teeth and claws? Wasn't it you quoting the "pacta sunt servanda"?
The icing on the cake is that the UK received the german vaccine from BionTech before the Astra Zeneca ones, and clown Boris expresses his Schadenfreude. I do not see this as a win for the UK in the long run, not because of a still higher death rate in the UK, but because of trust lost.
How do you think smaller states in the EU would fare if they had tried to negotiate all this alone? It is clear more people in Europe would have died that way. The EU promised to equally spread the vaccine, also to them. It is not a failure of the organisation and distribution, there just is not enough vaccine, and you know why.
Maybe you think it is "nice" that the EU got cheated, but this cheating originated elsewhere, and the world paid close attention. I agree that learning this lesson was necessary, but after all it's the UK Alleingang that causes the problem with the rollout and Astra Zeneca. The treaties, hoarding, "national security" LMAO!
The UK broke the treaty and stole it, nothing to whitewash about this. Learn the lesson.

The divcferenc ebetween you and me is that I deal with the world as it is and you deal with your idea of how you think it should be.
It tick much more sober and simple than you presume. To me it snot so much the idea that changes the world, but the deed carried out, and its wanted or unwanted real effects.
And I think this part of our conversations has become repetitive and unproductive.
Meanwhile, and you probably will hate the subject, der Spiegel writes:
British Minister of Health grants preferential treatment from AstraZeneca
"Our contract trumps them": The British health minister has admitted that AstraZeneca privileged his country vis-à-vis the EU. Hancock refers to contract law. The admission comes at a sensitive time: While 29 million apparently hoarded AstraZeneca vaccine doses have been tracked down in Italy, UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock has given his country preferential treatment by the British-Swedish pharmaceutical company. "I believe that free trading nations follow contract law," Hancock told the Financial Times. “Our contract trumps them. It's called contract law and it's clear, «he said, referring to the dispute between the EU and AstraZeneca over the reduced delivery quantities.
The conflict recently intensified again with the discovery of millions of vaccine doses in Italy - and fueled the debate about export bans from the EU. At the beginning of March, Italy blocked the export of AstraZeneca vaccine for the first time and applied a specially created EU export mechanism. The EU has a contract that only guarantees "best efforts" on the part of the vaccine manufacturer, while London has stipulated exclusivity.
Hancock warned Brussels against imposing export restrictions on vaccines. That would be a serious mistake, said the conservative politician. Life sciences companies would move to the UK, not a protectionist EU. "From Great Britain you can export anywhere in the world - we will never put a stop to that."
This attitude fits the hopes of many Brexit supporters of developing London into a "Singapore on the Thames": with strong deregulation of financial market rules and low taxes.
The EU complains that while millions of vaccine doses have been delivered from the continent to Great Britain in the past few months, almost nothing has gone in the opposite direction. Hancock stressed discussions with the EU about this being "cooperative, practice-oriented and collaborative".
The heads of state and government of the EU want to discuss the vaccine shortage on Thursday. AstraZeneca had drastically cut its delivery commitment several times and pointed out difficulties in production. Great Britain is hardly affected by this.
Tja tja. Who slept and who was clever here? :D
I would absolutely welcome a Singapore at the Thames. Because if anything, this would be what could and must force the EU to change and lower the endless centralization and hyper-regulation (and in Germany: the abstruse over-taxation) inside the EU that gags creativity, entrepreneurship and economic growth more and more, and paralyses everything and everyone. Especially in Germany.
If I were to found a company and had a big business idea - first thing in my plan always would be to flee out of the EU.

"Our contract trumps them" read "Me big swinger of bones, you inferior"
In reality: Both signed same contract, published, broken treaty.
"From Great Britain you can export anywhere in the world - we will never put a stop to that."
You can also export anything from the EU, and the UK will not be able to put a stop to that either.
Nothing to object your first part or the rest, especially our sounding like a broken record :03:
But regarding "Singapore on Thames" it seems not all see it that way

Mr Rees-Mogg shifted his business to South Ireland, Mr. Dyson left and preferred the real Singapore after brexit, but then it's a company and not a bank. But all this is stuff for another thread.
Is it reasonable to expect people – who by the CDC’s own statistics have a better than 99% chance of surviving a COVID infection, and on top of that have received a 95% effective vaccination – to refrain from living their lives? Are they really supposed to avoid their relatives for another three months, maybe six… who knows, it could even be another year?
The officials and talking heads who push this madness rarely subject themselves to meaningful debates on any of it. There’s just a committee of advisors or experts who gather behind closed doors at public health agencies, and then their pronouncements are treated like gospel by the lockdowners and mask maniacs.
Elected officials (mostly Democrats) then enforce the dictates as though it’s out of their hands. It all feels very Soviet…
One notable exception to this unaccountable power grab came last week up on Capitol Hill. Dr. Fauci appeared before a congressional committee to discuss the issue of mask wearing after vaccination. Some of his exchange (https://www.rev.com/blog/transcripts/dr-fauci-testimony-speech-transcript-march-18-masks-are-not-theatre) with Sen. Rand Paul, who is also an M.D. and has been one of the few true critics of Fauciism, went directly to the absurdity of the “mask up after vaccination” claims…
Sen. Paul: Dr. Fauci, in a recent British study, David Wiley and others found that no symptomatic reinfections from COVID-19 after following 2,800 patients for several months. In fact, there’ve been no reports of significant numbers of reinfections after acquiring COVID-19 naturally.
Given that no scientific studies have shown significant numbers of reinfections of patients previously infected or previously vaccinated, what specific studies do you cite to argue that the public should be wearing masks well into 2022?
Dr. Fauci: I’m not sure I understand the connection of what you’re saying about masks and reinfection. We’re talking about people who have never been infected before.
Sen. Paul: You’re telling everybody to wear a mask, whether they’ve had an infection or a vaccine. What I’m saying is they have immunity and everybody agrees they have immunity. What studies do you have that people that have had the vaccine or have had the infection are spreading the infection? If we’re not spreading the infection, isn’t it just theater?
Dr. Fauci: No, it’s not-
Sen. Paul: If you’ve had a vaccine and you’re wearing two masks, isn’t that theater?
For anyone who’s keeping score… Yes, it’s clearly theater. It’s unreasonable to expect people to live their lives in constant fear, frustration, and inconvenience because there’s a theoretical possibility that breathing air normally will spread a virus to someone even after the person breathing has been vaccinated against that possibility.
The people calling the shots on this are delusional. Recently, the CDC gave some crumbs (https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated-guidance.html) from the table of our basic freedoms, including that you can visit with other fully vaccinated people indoors without masks or physical distancing. Are we supposed to be grateful for this?
Does anyone in the CDC actually live in America, or do they just go from their bedrooms to their living rooms for appearances on MSNBC? Most normal Americans across the country have already been spending time with family indoors without masks for many months.
This is the result of mass hysteria, created in large part by the mass media… The Democratic party leveraged this to defeat Trump in 2020, and now they want to keep the madness going as long as they can to squeeze even more political benefit from this health policy autocracy.
As a country, we need to get back to some basic truths. Nothing is perfect, there’s no absolute safety… And if the government can take away any of your rights “for your own good,” then you don’t have any rights.
Dr. Fauci and the rest of the lockdown chorus have been a reminder of this, alongside their catastrophic policy failure to stop or contain the virus in the first place. Enough is enough, Fauci needs to go.

I had met the new neighbors yesterday none of us wore masks either AND I shook their hands as I welcomed them. Afterwards we stood around and shot the breeze for about 15 minutes well within 6 feet of each other. They're coming over for dinner tonight. Does that make us anti-science, super spreaders, should we be ashamed of our actions?
NOT :yeah:
