While it seems to be slowing down in China, it seems to be getting traction elsewhere: Coronavirus, the number of infections rises to six: the first are a 38-year-old from Codogno, his wife and a friend. Stop wondering if China's news media is lying and know that they are at least throttling down on information :yep:
How not to fight Chinese propaganda
https://www.cjr.org/opinion/china-state-media-foreign-missions.php
Chinese authorities initially sought to suppress news, delaying a response that might have slowed the spread of the disease. Many experts continue to believe that China is underreporting the number of infections. Several bloggers and activists who have criticized China’s response have been detained or gone missing.
On February 6, Chen Qiushi a freelance video journalist who reported via video that local hospitals were struggling to handle the large number of patients, disappeared.
He is likely in Chinese government custody. China is also engaging in widespread Internet censorship, disrupting the flow of critical information to those in need.
of course they lie about everything even dog food and dog chews kill dogs said a friend of mine that raises dogs :yep:

The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern at the number of coronavirus cases with no clear link to China or other confirmed cases.
Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus's comments follow Iran's announcement of two more deaths, bringing the total there to four.
The window of opportunity to contain the virus was "narrowing", he said.
Iranian health officials said the virus may already be in "all Iran's cities".
Outside China 1,152 cases of the virus have been confirmed in 26 countries and there have been eight deaths.
They include two deaths in South Korea, which has the biggest cluster of confirmed cases apart from China and a cruise ship quarantined in Japan.
Italy on Friday announced 16 more cases and its health minister said schools and offices would be closed and sports events cancelled in the affected regions.
China has reported 75,567 cases including 2,239 deaths. The new virus, which originated last year in Hubei province in China, causes a respiratory disease called Covid-19.

A flight carrying Britons evacuated from a coronavirus-hit cruise ship in Japan has arrived back in the UK.
The Foreign Office said 32 British and European passengers - who have been quarantined on the liner for 16 days - were on board.
The flight landed at Boscombe Down, an airbase in Wiltshire, after leaving Tokyo late on Friday night.
The group will travel on coaches to Arrowe Park hospital in Wirral, where they will spend 14 days in quarantine.
The passengers have so far tested negative for Covid-19, the illness brought on by coronavirus.

True, but this is what the other countries are doing also and to be different and then have one of them come down with the virus would be a shame to the powers that be.
Here is an interesting quote about the convid-19 virus in China that has now claimed another doctor, but this one was only 29 years old a departure from what has been a death threat to the seniors.
https://www.seattlepi.com/news/medical/article/China-reports-further-fall-in-new-virus-cases-15072333.php
People in China mourned the death of another doctor who had succumbed to the disease Thursday, according to an announcement from the district in which he worked in Wuhan. Peng Yinhua, a respiratory and intensive care physician, was infected last month while treating patients with the illness.
Chinese media reported that Peng was 29 years old, which would place him among the youngest to die from COVID-19, the name of the new illness.
Most of the fatalities have been people aged 60 and over with underlying medical conditions,
according to a report from China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
A newspaper profile of Peng last month said he had postponed his wedding to help fight the epidemic, working day and night to accommodate the influx of patients.
He is at least the third doctor to die in China from the illness.

Look how fast this covid-19 has spread in Iran?
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/02/21/who-officials-say-coronavirus-outbreak-in-iran-is-very-worrisome.html
World health officials said Friday the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak in Iran, where health officials confirmed 18 new cases and four deaths in just two days, is “very worrisome.”
Earlier in the day, Iran confirmed 13 new coronavirus cases, bringing its total in the country to 18. Seven people with the flu-like virus were diagnosed in Qom, four people in Tehran and two in Gilan.
The small outbreak in Iran has been linked to a case in Canada and another infection of a 45-year-old woman in Lebanon after those patients traveled to the Middle East nation.
They don't mind strapping explosives to young people and sending them in among the troops. What if Iran decides to use this disease as a weapon and send it into the protected green area of Iraq? :o

These people must be seriously fed up with the whole process.
They should have moved them all to a proper quarantine station, where there was fresh air and better separation. Thing is, I don't think they have the additional capacity. I know from experience, hospitals in my area don't have a lot of unused capacity. And I watched a video about this pandemic that focused on NYC and if I recall, the narrator said they were at 90% on a daily basis. That's not nearly enough to deal with a pandemic where lots of extra quarantine and isolation measures re needed. https://brooklyneagle.com/articles/2020/02/17/coronavirus-is-new-york-city-prepared-to-deal-with-thousands-of-cases/
And the emergency rooms are full of people who don't have insurance and illegal aliens getting their routine health care. So if we have a really big Wuhan style outbreak, look out. The US will look pretty stupid and unprepared.

More than 100 Britons rescued from China have left isolation, as dozens of people from a coronavirus-hit cruise ship begin a two-week quarantine.
UK citizens previously evacuated from the Chinese city of Wuhan - the centre of the virus outbreak - have ended their isolation in Milton Keynes.
It comes a day after those rescued from the Diamond Princess ship in Japan were taken to Wirral's Arrowe Park Hospital.
On Saturday, the government confirmed that no new UK cases had been detected.

The UK is "well prepared" to deal with coronavirus cases and the risk to individuals "remains low", the government has said.
Downing Street said 99% of those tested in the UK had come back negative.
The total number of cases in the UK has risen to 13 after four cruise ship passengers flown back to Britain on Saturday tested positive for the virus.
It comes amid growing fears the outbreak could reach pandemic scale as more cases emerge around the world.
A total of 6,536 coronavirus tests have been conducted in the UK as of 14:00 GMT on Monday, with 6,527 returning as negative, the Department of Health said.
Italy has the largest number of coronavirus cases in Europe, currently 165, and has reported its fifth death from the virus.
It has taken tough measures to try and contain the outbreak, including enforcing a lockdown in several small towns in the Lombardy and Veneto regions.

A hotel in Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands has been locked down after a visiting Italian doctor tested positive for coronavirus.
Hundreds of guests at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace Hotel were initially told to stay in their rooms as medical tests were carried out.
The doctor is reportedly from the Lombardy region, where Italian authorities are battling an outbreak.
Global cases of the virus have passed 80,000, the vast majority in China.
Iran, one of the worst-affected nations outside China, on Tuesday said its deputy health minister, Iraj Harirchi, had tested positive for the virus.

Welcome to Germany, Corona. :shifty:
Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia confirm first infections by returning travellers form Italy.
And an information on masks: FFP3 filter masks protect only as long as they have not become wet from breathing moisture. After ~20 minutes, they need to be replaced, since the moisture makes the material very passable for the virus. I am not sure how it is with masks including valves that imho should prevent the accumulation of breath moisture by allowing the air your breath out to exit via that valve, not through the filter. I think such masks should last longer. You get little benefit from these masks if there are no infectous people near to you, I would only wear them when needing to enter a supermarket, for example, of accept people at less than 3-4 meters didstanbce to me.
Best prophylaxis:
- washing your hands often
- sneezing into the crook of your arm instead your hand while turning away from others
- keep your distance, 3-4 meters, to others, avoid crowds, public transportation. Avoid meeting people.
- do not move with your fingers into your face, especially eyes, mouth, nose
- do not go and see your doctor if you do not really need to, his rooms may be an infestation lab already. routine examinations should wait.
- if you think you may have caught Corona, do not go and see a doctor, but telephone him and have somebody coming to you for testing you
- if you think you may have caught somehtign, dont be a hero and whip yourself to work in the office: but stay at home.
- Use a desinfectant on grips and switches and tools in your household frequently. Dont be obsessed and do not become a haunted person, but do it frequently: 1-2 times per week, and if you think you live in an alarm situation, once per day. I do it 1-2 times per week as part of my ordinary household routine: keyboard, mouse, telephone, TV pilot, light switches, appartment front door handle. Costs me one minute, a cotton ball and a bit of alcohol.

Did you know after drying 8lbs of bananas it now weighs about 1.25 pounds? :) Anyway, I guess the next step is to give notice at my job which I really do like. But at my age I just dont want to take chances like this. My concern isnt that doctors cant find a vaccine or heal me from injury or disease. I think we have the best doctors the world has to offer. My concern is the possible overloading of medical facilities and these wonderful professionals may make it much more difficult to do.

More cases are likely to be identified in the coming days, including more cases in the United States. It’s also likely that person-to-person spread will continue to occur, including in the United States. Widespread transmission of COVID-19 in the United States would translate into large numbers of people needing medical care at the same time. Schools, childcare centers, workplaces, and other places for mass gatherings may experience more absenteeism. Public health and healthcare systems may become overloaded, with elevated rates of hospitalizations and deaths. Other critical infrastructure, such as law enforcement, emergency medical services, and transportation industry may also be affected. Health care providers and hospitals may be overwhelmed. At this time, there is no vaccine to protect against COVID-19 and no medications approved to treat it. Nonpharmaceutical interventions would be the most important response strategy.
Well gents I am currently taking the CDC's recommendation of a "Nonpharmaceutical" response. I just gave notice to my employer, tonight is my last night on the job. At least until a pharmaceutical approach can be used to prevent the disease.

Speaking of the obvious this thing, this flu, this virus, this particular strain named covid-19 can't get us all.
It has not consumed China a land of 1 billion persons
It is still in it's infancy, but the fear is reaching far and wide to just stocking up on face mask and hand sanitizer right now.
Spring is March 20th little over three (3) weeks away. They say this thing this fear of the flu will be less in the Spring due to it does not like sunshine or light.
Now here is the rub ... What about next year? Will it make a another visit to our fear central?
The shot that will combat this covid-19 flu is still 12 to 18 months away, but the regular flu has already claimed 26 million people and 16,000 deaths in the USA alone.
Along with the fear that you have the bad one (covid-19) come next November/December ... will your hospitals and clinic's be ready?
The fear is real, the normal flu is real, the covid-19 is real ... Lets all get behind getting ready for the next flu season being real.
Sky had some good suggestions ... Lets listen to each other and not make each other fear that which is obviously going to happen, but come on man it can't get to all of us. :o

Over 70 big container vessels by Maersk and others currently have not left harbour in China. First small and medium business companies are breaking down. The crunch from that will work its way towards the West in the next 4 weeks. We have not even started to feel the fallout, but we will, it inevitably is heading our way. A vaccine is said to be unlikely to arrive before end of this year, european virus experts say, maybe not even before summer next ear, some indicated. Pharmaceutical production will be affected as one fo the first industry branches, since many of the base components for drugs exclusively get produced in China these days. Shortages are inevitably for certain drugs, in fact on some drugs they already are reality over here. Mayn fatories inb China are locked down, asnd that means Wetsern factories will run out of supply with sub-components for their production as well. Also, the demand on Chinese markets takes a dive as well, for exporters like Germany, that is bad news. Stocks have seen steep falls recently.
I think it possible that by the end of this year gold will cost in the range of 1700-1800 euros per ounce. Currently, it fluctuates around 1500-1550 euros over here. I also think it is possible that this pandemic triggers a new gloobal crash. If so, gold could raise even further, with stock markets dropping by one quarter or one third or even one half. Somebody has to kiss Super-Uschi's green deal good night...
The virus is vulnerable to temps exceeding 30°C. Time could be bought if delaying the spreading until late spring and early summer. The virus also does not like high air humidity, if the air is saturated with moisture, infection by small drops from people's breath becomes more difficult, physically. To increase air humidity inside rooms and buildings currently is a recommendation by the virus battle teams, since heating cannot push and nobody wants to push room temperatures to 30+ degrees Celsius. Abover 55% should help to slow down the spreading fo infections in buildings, below 40% the virus is fine.
I make it a habit now to use thin polyester gloves like joggers use them against the cold from wind. I wear them in supermarkets, to grab the items. I have several of them since I use them on bicycle, and got them cheap, I throw them into the washing machine after every shopping tour. When returning home, I do not touch anything with fingers and hands, not even get undressed, but go straight to the sink and wash hands - and not before then I start to grap door grips and get out of my coat and start touching surfaces and cupboards etc. It feels a bit weired, but is a very minor chnage only.
In some cities of the Ruhrgebiet area, hoarding is being reported from supermarkets. I am prepared anyway, as always. :D I just additionally reinforced my reserves in millet (its such a fantasstic andf versatile grain), UHT milk, and frozen fish and meat. All other food, water, and typical drugstore goods, I always have in good supply anyway. If need comes, I could hold out isolated for 2 months minimum.

So I bought the equivalent of 23 quarts powdered milk yesterday. Dairy seems to be one of the big things my antiquated mother needs constantly. Today I'm planning to fill all ten of the five gallon hurricane gas cans for myself. I'm considering installing a window in my office door so customers don't have to invade my personal space. LOL :hmmm: I have a piece of pvc pipe that I'm planning on making into a shopping cart handle "cover" by cutting out a lengthwise section so it just sort of hopefully snaps over a shopping cart handle. I've never been a fan of touching those dirty communal germ fests anyway, even after wiping with one of those wipes that are "sometimes" provided. :D
I guess I need some masks, not sure what I'm going to get.
Nice! Gas shortages always affect us on the Gulf Coast after hurricanes, I need to top off my inventory of cans this weekend.

Here you are just a normal sailor on a USN ship at sea ready to come home and then you hear this:
"Attention all hands we have been ordered to stay at sea 14 more days"
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/navy-orders-self-quarantine-for-ships-that-have-made-stops-in-the-pacific/ar-BB10uHSE?li=BBnbcA1
The US Navy has ordered all ships that have visited countries in the Pacific region to effectively self-quarantine and remain at sea for 14 days in order to monitor sailors for any symptoms of coronavirus.
"Out of an abundance of caution, Pacific Fleet is implementing additional mitigations to prevent Sailors from contracting COVID-19, and to monitor Sailors who have traveled to higher-risk areas," US Navy spokesman Lt. James Adams told CNN, using the official name for the virus.

:cool:Maybe that GHS index by the John Hopkins is not worth that much at all. This editorial from the German FAZ summarises the details describing the siutaiton in the Americna health sector and Corona for a pretty chapotic and inefficient picture. Not even testing patients seems to be possible reliably. That Trump has dramatically cut funding for certain government services that now are in need, does not really help to improve things.
https://www.faz.net/aktuell/wirtschaft/coronavirus-in-amerika-wenn-das-mal-gut-geht-16656640.html
The GHS index has the US on top rank. If the above article is correct - no chance that the GHS has any meaning or relevance then.
BTW, I was shopping today, and like is my habit since many years, I bought several bottles of soap. Certain items I always buy in bigger quantities, to get them off my list of daily and weekly shopping needs, and needing to care for them only in fewer, larger intervals. And at the cash desk a couple and then a single man started an argument with me, or tried so, that I was so egocentric to hoard soap in times like this when other people would want toi buy soap as well. I had just four bottles of soap in the basket! I snapped back with one or two very sharp comments and then got ready to even repel a physical attack, when the manager stepped in and separated them from me. One or two more icecold glances from me made sure they did not try again. Freud was right when saying that the layer of civikloization is very thin and barely covers the aniumalistic nature of man. I would add civilised behaviour as an antidot to stupidity and hysteria is like trying to attach paint on aluminium - it just does not stick but quickly peels off again.
Heck, its just Corona, not the black death! I would not even mind to name a pet like that, it has a nice sound on it. Most people feel it as nothing more than just a mild cold.

A German virologist, who was one of the discoverers of SARS, and while working for the CDC made major contributions to developng tests for it that he released before even his academic paper was published, says he expects that over the coming two years 60-70% of the German population will get infected.
A vaccine is expected in not earlier than 18 months so far.
Trading time is the motto and strategy now. "Delay, delay, delay!" Summer temperatures will help.
So some people awaits the worst case scenario and have filled their kitchen with things which need to be frozen or cooled and things that can be stored in ordinary room temp.
Here I'm thinking...if worst case should happen, there will be no electricity or so. Those who's controlling those things at the local powerstation is most likely home and sick or have done the same as the others.

Actually I do not think of Corona in these armageddon style scenarios, its just kind of a new seasonal flu like the ones we got used to over the past years and decades. And thats what many virologiusts seem to90 saY: different to SARS, which disappared in summer as mysteriously as it came, this virus now is expected to stay forever, anbd turn into another one of the many seasonal flus we have. And the more people got sick, the mo9re people will gain naturla immuni8zation by that.
But you are right, it is stupid to "prep" but then depend on electricity for cooling or cooking. MRE (not too tasteful, usually), and dried food are the basis of any food reserve keeping. If a temporary crisis occurs with warnign time, you can get some fresh food as well that needs to be kepot cool and frozen - but not too much. Key is that you eat the cooled, frozen stuff first. And then fall back to the dried food afterwards, if need arises. For this, I prefer millet - iot tastes good, can be cooked in sweet and salty dishes alike, and you do noit waste any water, can also cook it with milk. Many people also store pasta, I also do that, but it is on ly part of the overall concept, becasue you need more water to cook it - and do not even consume all the water. With rice, millet, graisn in general, this is difefrent, the water you need to cook it with, is not mnore than what you consume anyway. For this reaosn I also like oat, like millet in canned format (moisture prevention, no rotting). You can turn it into flakes, cook it with milk as well as water, and prepare it sweet or salty.
Diversity, or multi-purpose use is key.
Rice also goes well, but is not as healthy and rich in content as millet and oats. Quinoa and Amaranth also work well, but I do not like them by taste and consistence. Do not keep stuff in reserve that you do not like anyway, or do not know. Only proven things that you know you like. Thsi again should be considered when stockpiling cans. Do only use cans that you know and can tolerate. Do not use untested, unkn own stuff and food recipies you do not like too much. You see,k you prepare in this scenariop for long time of isolation or lack of externbal supply -moralö plays a role then, and moral drops if your food is always the same bad stuff, or has too many bad surprises. Every cook on a ship knows what I mean. Keep the crew well fed, and the moral goes up. Feed them bad, and moral goes down. The cook is very important, he is second or third man after captain and doctor! ;) :D
And what many people also ignore: lack of electricity would mean lack of sweet water and toilet flushing, and no showers. Many people do not prepare for the time when toilets are of no use anymore. In the wilderness, that might not be a big thing. In urban areas, it is. You can take water from a city cannel for cleaning and wahsing, but no chance that you can turn it into drinking water by the means that you can buy in an outdoor shop. That you can only dare to do when you have a really clean river in the wilderness, with no signs of civilization and industry uprivers. In Sweden and some abandoned place there - I would consider it. In Germany? No chance. We have no real wilderness here, its all an urban and industrial park.

I refer to quotations by the chef of the WHO, and the head of the Robert Kopch institute which is the German verison of the American CDC. The v irologist I quoted above and whom altready played a mmajor role in SARS, also mentioned a period of around 128 month just this mornign again.
However we have soi many partially contradicting numbers on lethaliuty and case numbers, and links betwene age and severity of the desease, that maybe the one hand does not know what the other hand currently is doing. International data comparison seems to work a bit chaotic currently, my impression is. But who am I to judge that... And when the CDC sent testing packs across all the cpountry which did nto work and managed to test just 480 people so far in all these days, I must admit my trust in their claim that they will have a vaccine soon is not to be taken for granted. According to the political leadership, evertyhing is almost on schedule and evertyhign works fien and well. Which obviously is not the case.
Simple FFP2 - not even FFP3 - one-use surgical masks can now be had for cheap 250 Euros over here. Per piece. And these items at these prices even find their customers...

Its not "my estimation", again, I refer to quotes by the chef of the WHO and the Robert Koch Institute, which is the German CDC. Its also some people at the spearhead of the research effort saying that their will be no vaccine before later in 2021. Testing it earlier is part of that, but that something gets tested does not mean it is fit for public mass distribution.
Maybe somebody finds a surprise, and things can speed up. It certainly would be welcomed. But mind you. They have not found a simple vaccine against ordinary cold until today.

Well, my last day at work was yesterday. I sent my employer a letter making it official.
I regret to inform you of my decision to conclude my employment with [company] and sincerely apologize for its abruptness and the burden it may have placed on others. I have been keeping tabs on SARS-CoV-2 since early January 2020. It has been said, unprecedented Herculean efforts and draconian measures are being taken by functioning governments to stave off the spread of the virus causing Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome of which there are no approved pharmaceutical treatments or vaccines. I have closely monitored the the European and U.S. Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organization, and Johns Hopkins University dashboard for information. They all seem to agree the virus can still be contained “with the right measures”.
Having been employed over 24 years by United States Coast Guard. I've learned when the Federal government FINALLY gets around to making statements suggesting the spread in the U.S. is inevitable and offers recommendations, one should take heed. Of the several U.S. Center for Disease Control recommendations, one is to take the non-pharmaceutical measure of reducing social interaction. I do this not for myself, but for my family, particularly my wife who has two strikes against her already, namely her age and underlying health issues. I don't wish to sound like chicken little, I don't plan to barricade my house or start digging an underground bunker, nobody should think that way. The United States of America has the best medical professionals and facilities in the world. However I believe I would be remiss if I disregarded their recommendations.
Thank you for opportunity to serve you, our customers and improve myself these last 3-1/2 or so years and I eagerly look forward to working with you again in the near future.Gonna be a beautiful and clear night tomorrow, think I will observe the stars and take some pictures of a nebula.
btw I just heard on CBS news they are sending a vaccine to China for human trials. Also, as far as the stock market goes its going to continue to drop in fact I think its a good thing. Don't fret or be a weak hand because of it, just be patient and look for opportunity because it will without a doubt go back up.

124 health workers at one US hospital have been forced to self-quarantine after possible coronavirus exposure.

Oregon’s first reported case appears to be ‘community-transmitted’.
The U.S. state of Oregon reported its first case of novel coronavirus, public health officials announced. The individual, an adult who lives in Washington County, has no history of travel to a country where the virus is known to be circulating and is not believed to have had close contact with other confirmed cases. Officials “are considering it a likely community-transmitted case,” they said. Washington County lies just to the west of Portland, the state’s largest city.
Washington State reports two ‘presumptive positive’ cases.
The U.S. state of Washington has classified two COVID-19 cases in the state as “presumptive positives,” including one case that appears travel-related and one whose origin is unknown. A woman in her 50s who lives in King County recently returned from South Korea. The second case, of a high school student from Snohomish County, is still being investigated. Both individuals are in home isolation, officials said.
Santa Clara County health officials confirm first probable 'community-transmitted' coronavirus case.
The county said this case is different from the other two since the patient, an elderly woman, doesn’t have a travel history or any known contact with a traveler or infected person. “This new case indicates that there is evidence of community transmission but the extent is still not clear,” said Dr. Sara Cody, Health Officer for Santa Clara County and Director of the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department. “I understand this may be concerning to hear, but this is what we have been preparing for. Now we need to start taking additional actions to slow down the spread of the disease.”

Italy now has over 820 cases, making it one of the worst hit countries in the world. Lombardy, in northern Italy, has 531 confirmed cases and a death toll of 17, the region's health secretary Giulio Gallera said Friday.
And hospitals are struggling to cope.
"If the (coronavirus) keeps spreading, there will be a crisis of the hospitals, not only for those infected, but for all patients,” Gallera said.

Thanks, but dont worry, I have not hoped or waited for this, nor do i see the risk of this pandemic primarily in the health area, but in the economic area - nevertheless I am prepared for emergencies since longer time now and as I described before, and repeatedly: I can shut down, self-isolate myself and hold out for 2 month, if I rationise: even longer. But so far I have not acitvqated any of my reserves, nor do i plan to do so. Not for somethoignt hat most likely woudl pass on me like a mild form of seasonal flu - if I even would notice it. My main concern never was a biological threat, but a power blackout.
Well prepared over here - but far from getting hysterical! :salute:
If I am worried, then it is more about my parents, both are beyond 70 years, and if they catch it, it might not pass on them so easily as it does on many others - who knows. Thanks, Neal. Good to be back. Things are becoming a bit more serious here. ALL schools in Japan are now closed until at least April 1st. Also, our governor here in Hokkaido prefecture declared a state of emergency on Friday afternoon, requesting everyone remain in their homes and not go out unless absolutely necessary- in effect for at least 3 weeks. And they confirmed the first case in my city on Thursday. Hokkaido now has the fastest growing number of infected in Japan. Looks like we're becoming another Northern Italy. And the scary thing is that they aren't even testing people that much here, so I imagine the true number of infected is much higher.

Jamie Nixon, a public information officer with the Washington State Department of Health, said that a patient in the state has died from the infection. A news conference will be held by officials in King County at 4:00 pm EST.
The patient was a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions, who was tested at the Washington State Public Health Lab, according to U.S. health officials.

Interesting sidenote in a news magazine over here today: until today, in Germany 130 people have died of ordinary seasonal flu ("influenza" this season.
Puts the massive fear of Corona a bit into relation, I would think.
This season Germany has had an extraordinarily high number of influenza cases. Some federal states report numbers to be 50% higher than in the years before.
People are so afraid of sharks and tigers. But nobody is afraid of cars and traffic. Evolutionary fail.

I'm going in to see a doctor Monday I've had it
I've had the flu for three (3) weeks now treated at home with just Advil and Day Quil cold meds ... I feel horrible, but have had no contact with any known world traveler so what happens next year?
Will millions of people want to know if the have type A, B, C or the Convid-19 flu?
Will there be enough test kits? Will it overwhelm the health care system till people have to stay at home to have someone to come treat them?
https://www.bing.com/search?q=normal+flu+season&qs=AS&pq=normal+flu+&sk=AS4&sc=8-11&cvid=32D2B41D9F82486AB86B718ED0C7505E&FORM=QBLH&sp=5
Major flu activity in each season varies by location, in any specific location these minor epidemics usually take about 3 weeks to peak, and another 3 weeks to significantly diminish.
Although you can get the flu anytime, flu season starts in October and can go as late as March and even April. But it usually peaks in the U.S. in February
The peak of flu season can happen as early as mid-November and as late as March.
Human influenza A and B viruses cause seasonal epidemics almost every winter in the United States. Influenza C infections generally cause a mild respiratory illness and are not thought to cause epidemics.

Mr. Quatro, I would avoid hospitals at all costs if possible. I normally don't recommend supplements to people, but in this case I will. Get some echinacea ASAP. This stuff really works well for colds and flu. Seriously. My wife and I have been using it for years when we've gotten sick and I've found nothing else that works as well. It boosts the immune system, plus helps block the virus from invading new cells. It also helps prevents Cytokine Storms (immune system overreacting, destroying healthy cells and causing excessive fluid buildup) in the lungs. I read a detailed medical research paper released by a British Colombia university and they did confirm this. Since this new coronavirus is in the same basic family as cold viruses, it should also work against that, though I don't think there has been any laboratory testing yet to confirm this. Anyway, echinacea should not be taken as prevention, but only after symptoms occur. The brand we use is Nature's Way and is available on Amazon.

I think capsules would probably work much better than the lozenges due to a higher content of the herb. Also, that capsule label you posted recommends only 2 capsules per day, which is quite a conservative amount. I usually take at least 3-4 capsules per day when sick (and 6 per day when I came down with pneumonia last year). And the ingredients state 'aerial' parts only. That's ok, but I've read that the root part is the most effective part of the plant, so you might want to find some capsules that also contain the root (like the ones I mentioned available on Amazon).

People who think they might got hit, should NOT go to see the doctor, but telephone him and ask how to further proceed. In Germany, you may find that some doctors may not even let you in. In other places they seem to concentrate trafficking of infected people to certain dedicated places/hospitals instead of having them scattered around all over the town'S hosptials. You are a germ distributor currently, Quattro. You must not become a mobile germ distributor. Have somebody coming to you and testing you at home, or have a testing kit delivered. If they now work - I read that the first kits delivered in the US did not work at all.
I know Eccinacea as well and would recommend it in case of just a common cold, it boosts the immune system a bit, so it is said, but it may as well be a placebo effect, so I would not expect wonders, but it might be worth a try. I used to use it in liquid form in past times, using drops, it might have helped, or not, I never was certain. But if you suffer from sympütoms for already three weeks , and think it could be Corvid-19, understand that in case of the latter, as Traveller said, it is not yet tested (AFAIK), and that the first point (3 weeks) is an alarm signal that you got hit a bit harder than just by a common cold. Human immune systems currently do not know Corvid-19. Nobody knows for sure currently what assists in curing it, what helps in fighting the symptoms, and what really knocks it out (if anything, we do not know drugs that really kill virusses, we only have drugs slowing down virus reproduction rates, so-called (in German) "Virustatika". Just saying that, since many people do not know that there are no drugs against virusses like there are drugs and antibiotics against bacteria.
And while I am at it, just adding that antibiotics do not help against virusses at all.
Just do not run around and do not go to a doctor and infest other people while you do all that. Stay isolated and have help coming to you. Even if it is just a testing. Also, do not use public transportation or taxi. Corvid-19's landmark characteristic is that it is so very highly infectous, more than sars or common flu, apparently, far more.

I think the problem is that many users find it less effective because they don't take high enough doses when sick. But like you said, we don't know yet whether echinacea would have any effect on this new coronavirus. Theoretically, it should because it's behaves a lot like influenza and cold viruses in many ways. Again, we just don't know yet. On a positive note, echinacea is particularly effective against viral respiratory infections, so it's certainly worth a try if infected. But even if research does prove it to be effective for treating this new coronavirus, we'll probably never hear about it in the mainstream media because the pharmaceutical companies cannot patent a natural herb, meaning no profits.
Illinois announces another 'presumptive' positive case of coronavirus.
A presumptive positive case of coronavirus has been reported in the US state of Illinois, state health officials said.
What is a presumptive case? This is a patient who has tested positive at a state, county or city lab, but whose results have not yet been confirmed by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lab.
The Illinois case: This presumptive positive patient is hospitalized in isolation. Officials did not disclose whether the patient had traveled to an area affected by the coronavirus or if the patient had come into close contact with another infected person.
Illinois already had two patients test positive. Both made full recoveries, according to a news release from state officials.

What works, works, and I am not denying the effectiveness of placebo effects. But ten or twelve yearsd ago they did a huge mega-survey of resewrch papers and studies on Eccinacea, and foudn there were many such studies claimign this and that - but were of horrific methodological quality, rendering them wortheless for the most. This is not really a surprise, since the academic standard is ruined anyway, it seems, and most of these studies were paid for by prducers of such drops and pills with Eccinacea.
Thats why I say that the effectiveness of Eccinacea is not proven well. The opposite is true. Still, if people beleive it works, and they become better, it is not improtant if it is the drug or the mind or just time. Placebo effects do work a lot, and plenty of the ordinary doctor's daily routines probably also is placebo-based effects, the modenr interpretation of Shaman with bongos and theatre play, just with time and talking instead of bongogs, and white coats instead of theatre play with masks and screaming.
In the end it really is stunnign to realise how little we really know about the self-healing power of the body.

Skybird, I understand what you are saying. But many, many people that take it when sick with cold or flu claim that it does work well (including me and my wife). The difference in speed of recovery for us is amazing between taking it or not. This certainly is not a placebo effect in my opinion. And both of our cats have Rhinovirus disease, which is an incurable respiratory disease that causes frequent and severe secondary lung infections. When I give them enchinacea, it greatly reduces their symptoms almost immediately. And cats don't know the difference between a placebo effect or not. Anyway, I trust anecdotal and first-hand experience any day over any research study. :03:

Skybird, I have to respectfully disagree. While some research studies show that echinacea is ineffective, many other studies show that it is effective. But none of that really matters, because me and my wife have both experienced first-hand just how well it works for us when we become sick. And both of our cats have herpesvirus, which is an incurable cat disease that causes frequent secondary lung infections. When their symptoms are bad (severe coughing, extreme nasal discharge, loss of appetite, and malaise) and I give them echinacea, they begin to improve almost immediately, with symptoms almost completely gone usually within 2-3 days. But if I don't give it to them, they remain sick for weeks. That certainly is not a placebo effect. :03:

We must agree to disagree. I simply refer to a huge metastudy which was published in 2007 or 2008 or 2009, in that timeframe it was I think, which checked the existing studies until then and found the huge majority of them sufferign from massive methodologica faults and errors, and bias due to many of these studies' paymasters being the producers of the drug.
I admitted that placebo effects do exist, and they are for real. No doctor with a sane mind would deny its existence. And sometimes it works for stunnign effect. I just question that the drug indeed unfolds a chemical, causal, material effect. If placebo effects help, they help, and I have nothing against that at all. I know too well that their possible supportive effect is real.
Homeopathy, as another example, is somethingn I find difficult to tolerate, because while here again placebo effects may be at work and then may do some pain-easing effect indeed, it is absurd to claim, like many ideologsts do, that it works on a material, causal, mechanical basis. Where there is no more active agent included, no active agent can cause an real chemical or physical effect in the body, claiming that the non-existing agent does casue this effect as if it still were there simply is against all what science stands for. It simply is not possible. But totally absurd it becomes if homeopathy-using people then claim it works because they see it working on their pets. That is no methodologically valid observation and no scientific statement, but just a subjective, a highly subjective opinion based on anything but systematical, unbiased perception. Again, a placebo effect may be at work in this situation - but it is not active on the animal, which does not know the difference between curing drug and food and pointless pills, but the placebo effect again is active - on the imagination of the pet owner.
I do not claim eccinacea is completely ineffective, I am not qualified to make such a bold statement, I just refer to a metastudy putting much of what in past years has been attributed to Eccinacea in almost miraculous efficiency and effect, into massive doubt. The methodology behind very many studies done until the late first decade of this century, is so weak that the studies did not allow to make these claims they rise. Say the authors of said metastudy. But that is the purpose of doing metastudies: to evaluate the quality and methodologicla corretcness of alreayd existing strudies on.
There are such hypes time and again, on vitmasnicne poills, high doeses of Vit-C or Vit-Dx, Infludo (a German homeopathic water with alcohol in it), or herbal essences and thing slike Eccinacea. The market blooms and blossoms, and very huge money is in it. I have used Eccinacea in earlier, past years myself, and never was certain it made a difefrnce, and when i did not use it anymore, I felt no difference and my colds went the same way as always. It did no harm to me, and it might help some people for whatever a reaosn is, so fine, try it and see what it does for you.
Just do not leave it to Eccinacea alone if you think you gut struck hard. Because that holds a chance that maybe it will do damage for sure: when you leave your treatment to Eccinacea alone while in fact you would need a more potent cure. Depends on what it is that you picked up.
P.S. I am not against phytopharmacy at all. If it works, then for heaven's sake use it, why not. I am pragmatist there. But I am also a Nazi when it comes to methodology and its abuse to boost sales numbers of ideological paradigms - then I turn into a beast. And when takign oublic media, the abuse of these methods is widespread, unfortunatelly. Money runs the world. That is true for the academical circus as well, and many are willing (or are in need) to sell their souls. In the field of ecotrophology (science of foods) and dietary supplements, corruption of science apparently now is the norm, and claim can be risen without needing to show substantial evidence for it.

Since then, nine cases of SARS infections have been reported, but they occurred as a result of laboratory accidents in Singapore and Taiwan and from exposure to an animal source. No other cases of SARS have been identified anywhere else in the world. Second coronavirus death confirmed in King County, Washington.
A second coronavirus death has been confirmed in King County, Washington, according to a press release from Seattle and King County Public Health.
The patient was a man in his 70s with underlying health conditions. He was hospitalized at Evergreen Health in Kirkland and died Saturday, the release said.
4 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Washington state.Four new presumptive positive cases of the novel coronavirus were detected in a single facility in Washington state's King County, authorities said.
The four patients are residents of Life Care Center nursing home in the city of Kirkland, the county public health authority said in a news release. Of those four patients, one has died. All were being held at the same hospital, EvergreenHealth, in Kirkland.
34 police officers and firefighters in Washington state are under quarantine after possible exposure to coronavirus.
Seven Redmond, Washington, medics are being quarantined after possible exposure to the novel coronavirus, according to a tweet from Redmond Police’s verified account.
Twenty-five firefighters and two police officers from the city of Kirkland are also under quarantine. The first responders who were quarantined had responded to calls for "various medical complaints" at the Life Care Center where two people were diagnosed Saturday, according to the city of Kirkland's website (https://www.kirklandwa.gov/NewsRoom/Kirkland_Fire_Department_Fully_Staffed_and_Respond ing_to_all_Calls.htm).5 new coronavirus cases confirmed in California.
A total of five new presumptive positive casesof coronavirus were identified in California Sunday, according to health departments in three counties.
Two patients are health care workers from Alameda County and Solano County, according to a joint press release from two localities. Both are employees at NorthBay VacaValley Hospital in Vacaville, California, according to the release. Vacaville is about 34 miles southwest of Sacramento.
The two patients came into contact with a community-acquired case currently hospitalized at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, the release said. The patients are currently in isolation at home.
These cases are pending confirmatory testing from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the release said.
The three other cases were identified in Santa Clara County, according to the county's health department. The total number of cases in the county is now seven, the release said.
First case of coronavirus case confirmed in New York.
New York has confirmed its first case of novel coronavirus, according to a statement from New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
We have learned of the 1st positive case of COVID-19 in NY. The patient contracted the virus while in Iran and is isolated
There is no reason for undue anxiety—the general risk remains low in NY. We are diligently managing this situation and will provide info as it becomes available.
Florida, Oregon, and Rhode Island identify new coronavirus cases.
The case in Oregon is the second presumptive positive in that state. It involves a Washington County resident who is an adult household contact of the first presumptive positive case.
The patient in Rhode Island is a female teenager who is at home with mild symptoms. She is the second case identified in the state. The first is a man in his 40s.
Both of them went on a trip to Europe organized by Saint Raphael Academy, a school in the city of Pawtucket.
All 38 people who attended the trip will self-monitor for symptoms at home for 14 days with public health supervision. They have been instructed to not go to school or work and to remain at home for the two-week period. The school will be closed for the remainder of this week.
Florida's Department of Health announced that state's two new presumptive positive cases on Twitter. The governor, Ron DeSantis has declared a public health emergency to combat the virus' spread.

The governor, Ron DeSantis has declared a public health emergency to combat the virus' spread.https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-01-20-intl-hnk/index.html

Things are looking up. China's cases are slowing down, hopefully the US and Europe will be serious about slowing the spread as well.
Dr. Bruce Aylward, International team lead for the World Health Organization-China joint mission on COVID-19 held a news conference in Geneva and told reporters that China's mobilization to handle the virus outbreak showed how aggressive policy steps could curb the disease's spread.

I'm afraid China's massive draconian military-style forced lock-downs and quarantines would never work in the US. Can you imagine them trying to lock down a city with a population of 5 million in the US? Good luck with that.
I've been seeing quite a few TV interviews in the US talking about this exact topic, and they all said the same thing: You cannot forcibly lock down entire cities or towns in the US, because it's unconstitutional and Americans wouldn't stand for it.
But I suppose they could override the Constitution by calling in the National Guard and declaring martial law if things got really bad, but I'm not too sure how well that would work out. Would probably end up being total chaos, at least for a while until things calmed down. American culture is quite different from Southeast Asian cultures in many ways (gun ownership, individualist, rebellious, etc).
But what happens if large numbers of the US military and police become infected and must be put under quarantine? It'll then be every man and woman for themselves after that in many areas.
Whatever happens, it will all be interesting to watch.
And by the way, anyone here who is regularly taking prescription drugs might want to get a 3-month supply in advance from their pharmacy. I've been hearing that 95% of all US prescription drugs are dependent on ingredients from China. I've also heard that they are already having shortages of a few prescription drugs in the US (which, I'm not sure), and shortages will probably only get worse over time.

While it is true that American and German - and probably other as well - companies have a vaccine in the tube, truth is that this does not mean it can immediately enter production. Long testing procedures will follow. Even if emergency time-.cutting legislation is allowed to be used to shorten the development time until licenses are given, it will last into the next year before a vaccine is widely avalable on market.

The spread of coronavirus in the UK is "likely", the PM has said, but a plan has been agreed to tackle it.
Boris Johnson said people "should go about business as usual" at the moment.
He said the UK was "very well prepared" and measures would be guided by scientific advice, with further details announced in the coming days and weeks.
Meanwhile, the EU has raised the coronavirus risk level in member states to "moderate to high".

Been thinking, I've heard said: There have been more deaths from the common flu this season! Well how many medical and ambulance workers have you ever seen dressed like this transporting patients of the common flu? Maybe those case fatality rates of common flu aren't as accurate as some make them out. I've read in some places the CDC may tend to attribute most respiratory illness and fatalities to the common flu thereby making it look much more deadly than it is.

Come on man ... two (2) dead in the USA and 80 cases reported vs 16,000 dead from influence A,B and C plus the 26 million reported cases of flu.
The normal flu has treatments, but here's the rub the more deadly type of flu
Covid-19 has no know cure for it yet and the symptoms are exactly the same with
the Covid-19 being even more highly contagious from people that don't even know that they have it.

Christian Droste is a German international top virologist, one of the discoverers of SARS and he helped to bring out the first test for it. His speciality are Corona virusses. He gets currently plenty of media time over here, due to his reputation.
He says the lethality numbers are blown up, due to commercial interest in fueling the sensationalism, due to bad methodology, and due to hysteria in social media. But if he checks the numbers he gets from all over the world and corrects them for these effects, he has a lethality of not 2-3%, but 0.7% or less, he says. Bad methodology and dubious sources for numbers also are the reason, he said, that there are reports that people have multiple infections, and other tales like that.
He said that around 70% (two thirds) of the population must have gotten the infection and developed immunization as a consequence, before the spreading of the pandemic would stop. The reason is simple maths, based on the assumption (founded on other pandemics) that every infected person will infect three other persons per week. If two in three people however can no longer be infected, because they are immune, the further spreading will slow down, and come to a stop some time later.
He also pointed out that most people seem to form only mild symptoms - if they are aware of any illness at all.
He closed a press confernce today by saying that the worries are not so much for the individual, because it seems to be much hype and in fact low substantial reasons to worry over the individual case, but the social structure and the economy of Western societies that are under enormous stress and may suffer blowbacks that could trigger consequences that dramatically backfire against said communal integrity and economic functionality.
However, his relaxed views are not unisono agreed. The head of the Medical Institute for Microbiology at the university in Halle-Wittenberg, Alexander Kekulé, demands 14 days of Corona holidays , where all mass events are banned and schools and kindergardens, swimming halls, public offices etc are shut down. In some districts in Germany, this already is being done. Even regional courts are shut down. Kekulé wanst to encourage people to stay alone for the most (means: avoid social contacts) , avoiding contacts to others where possible, and travelling should be limited to just what cannot be avoided at all.

The world is in "uncharted territory" on the coronavirus outbreak, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.
Its chief, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said it had never seen a "respiratory pathogen capable of community transmission which... can also be contained with the right measures".
Deaths globally have passed 3,000. Most are in China but there are far more new infections outside China than inside.
However, Dr Tedros insisted: "We can still push this virus back".
He said the development of the Covid-19 disease globally was not a "one-way street" and could be combated if countries acted quickly and effectively - starting with containment measures.
"There is no choice but to act now," he said.
One of the countries worst affected outside China - Italy - on Monday saw a jump in its death toll from 34 to 52.

The Trump administration's proposed 2021 budget includes cuts to the CDC's activities related to chronic disease.
What's False
Congress hasn't approved the budget, so CDC funding in 2021 remains unclear.

I'm sorry, but if this virus spreads in the UK like it has in China and South Korea, it's going to be a lot higher than 20%, not only due to those hospitalized, but also those under mandatory quarantine. I wouldn't be surprised if that number rises to 50% in some cities.
Also, most police departments and hospitals are already understaffed and overworked, so they'll get hit particularly hard.

Went to the VA clinic here yesterday and you can't even get in without a nurse seeing you with a lady or gentleman asking everyone if they have a cough or runny nose or any cold symptoms.
After three weeks of coughing I had to say 'yes' so I had to wait for a nurse to come out of the main building to see me. She just asked a few questions and gave me something fo the cough.
Then I went in to check in for my heart stress test and a big paper under the screen asking if anyone had flu like symptoms to check in to urgent care.
So I did and an hour later a nurse came out and called my name. She was under thirty and very nice to me checking everything and then said, "I don't think you have covid-19, but we don't have anyway of checking you for it yet and that I would have to go to the local ER room at the local hospital for that.
Then she added that three weeks wasn't that bad and that she had just got off the flu and that it took four weeks. She made me feel better and gave me some really really good cough medicine (that I just took)
So then I go to see the real reason I was there for my heart and it turns out that this would not be a good time to run on a thread mill to test my endurance. Here's a new appointment for four months from now and good luck.
Home and happy ... God bless all of you veterans the VA is slow, but they really do care about you. :yep:

You know that Tsunamis are not build by winds on the surface but by deep-seating seismic centres causing fast-travelling deep sea shockwave fronts that rise to the surface only where the sea bottom starts to rise into the shallow waters. So do not trust the play of the gentle waves on the beach that much.
Just compare the going of stockmarkets over the past months and years and compare the record indices to the growing "Bilanzsumme" (balance sheet total ? ) of the FED and other central banks. What is to be seen there, should ring red alert - and reveal how much substance there really is in the economic "growth".
Ot does anyone seriously believe in that a nation's total economy triples in real value within one decade...? Really...???
You get such values only when corrupting the value of the currency.

At least 9 coronavirus patients have now died in Washington state. Eight people have died in King County, Department of Health officials said. There's a total of 21 cases in the county.
Earlier, one person in Snohomish County died. The county has had six cases.https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-03-20-intl-hnk/index.html

The employee previously visited the Kirkland Life Care Facility, which has become the source of an outbreak in the state.
Mortality rate of COVID-19 climbs to 3.4%. The mortality rate of COVID-19 is significantly higher than previous estimates, world health officials said. Globally, about 3.4% of confirmed patients have died, said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization. In comparison, the seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/03/coronavirus-latest-updates-outbreak.html
3.4%? Ruh roh. Not good. Now we know why China shut down their economy and locked down 785 million people. I've also read estimates of 15-20% death rate once hospitals become overwhelmed and those infected must remain in their homes.

The first hospital in Germany refuses to send hospital staff into quarantine that had contact to infected colleagues or patients unprotected. They say it is not good, but that they are running so low on work force already that they cannot maintain daily routines and keep the house open and patients supported if they would not do like this. To many crews and shifts already are off duty and in quarantine.
And I just red a report by a importer of masks and hygienics articles who said that practically all warehouses and stocks in Germany are empty and that no new supplies in masks and protective suits and such are coming in (from china or elsewhere). They get drowned with requests, and must deny them. They expect one last delivery because the ships already were at sea, and when these supplies are out, they must close the company of theirs, because different to SARS and MERS, the items are being consumed at high rates and it will take at least six months until new supplies get delivered - with priority for rescue services and hospitals, and with supplies coming in again not before 6 months time, they are out of work and run bancrupt. They recommend nurses and doctors in hopsitals to use masks for two or three shifts instead of changing them once or twiuce per shift. She also said that days ago she had dozens and dozens of trucks who wanted to buy back goods that before were delivered form China. She sent them all away.
Thats what one can call a dramatic supply situation. Desinfectant gets stolen in hospitals, masks as well. Existing stocks are expected to run out soon - and then for weeks and months nothing will come. Because not a single company in germany produces these anymore. :har: Globalization at its best.
The comedians of the health ministry still say that all is good and Germany is well prepared. Well, planned economy has a mindset that thinks papers on a table are something that reality will bow to.
We are so very, very, very lucky that this disease is not really as lethal as a real demonic threat like Ebola or the Plague would be. Most of us will probabaly pick it up - and feel it only as a mild flu, or a cold, many will not even feel symptoms at all. We are so very, very lucky this time to get away this cheap. But it maybe is our last warning. The lesson needs to be learned. Certain economical and liberal policies cannot be maintained any longer. Not with this amount of travel around the globe and 8 billion people and global trading. The next bug showing up maybe will not be of the Mr-kind-guy format anymore, it maybe will not just tap us on the shoulder and say hi!, but will bite us into two pieces of equal size, so to speak. And nobody should be mistaken, even if some people are dying these days: this bug now is still a VERY friendly Mr. Kind Guy. It could be a helluvalot worse with another bug.
Price for handdesinfectant today i have seen risen to levels beyond factor 300. 100ml Sterillium for 380 Euros. Before the sellout, 1 liter costed 10-13 Euros. I bought two such bottles (Virugard Sterillium) early last year for 25 Euros including shipping), a prepper'S ordinary deed, long before all this broke out. (It still is not in use, and I doubt I will need it this time, I probably hand it over to my parents, both are over 70).

You know what I mean? If 16,000 have died from the flu in the US as of the flu season now.

Covid 19 most likely is here to stay. Different to SARS, it will not just dissapear again, but become part of the seasonal "flu canon".
Flu shots should be considered on grounds of several factors: your age, your health condition and existing illness, and your social life and job ambience. If you are older, if you cannot avoid having lots of contacts with people, if you have diabetes, cardiovascular problems, lung problems, (etc etc), you are a likely candidate. If you are younger, have lesser contacts and are thus not exposed to risks, and have no inherent health issues, you are more likely to get away with not getting the shot. I had them when I still worked at had to drela with hundreds of cusotmer sper day on my shift. Since that stopped, i do not get it anymore, since I now live pretty much "withdrawn".
Having children (having school contacts) or people you need to care for (elderly, parents), is another consideration. The firts raise your own risk to get infected, the latter may depend on you not getting sick so that you cannot infect them.
From the age of around 60 on, the immune system is seen as having suffered considerable loss of its former strength when you were young.

Water-supply is electricity-driven. That includes toilet flushing. Wait until a blackout hits towns and cities for days - and then see if you want to walk down the street without a gas mask.
Biological needs like these are given the least concern by hobby survivalists, usually, but in urban scenarios inside big cities that is a big, big mistake. ;)

It makes sense in every place that suffers from a lasting blackout. ;)
In 2003 I think it was when we had a snow desaster north of Münster, the Northern Münsterland region. Almost 300.000 people had no power for up to 5 days. And many of them (not all) also no water. For German standards, it really was quite bad.
There is no such thing as untouched nature in an industrialised country like Germany. None of the rivers or lakes in the north and middle holds water that can be used as drinking water just by dripping it through some charcoal filter. Not even rain water is free of chemical intoxication once it no longer flies in the cloud but rains down throgh the layers of polluted air.
Drinking water is a priority. Always. Everywhere. Survival water filters and purifiers as beign sold in outdoor shops will not help you much in a place without untouched, clean nature. They cna filter out biolgoicial hazuards, and quite reliably. But no chemical ones. If that were so easy, we would not need so many high-poriced water purification plants, and these plants would not have so big problems to get the job done.
Thats why I prefer rice, grains and corns over noodles for keeping dry food stock (and that says a man who loves well-done Italian pasta, I have pasta at least two times a week). Cooking them wastes considerable less water, and you consume all the water used for cooking. With pasta and potatoes, plenty of water remains, gets wasted. And drinking it, is not really of a taste you want to get used to easily.

Los Angeles coronavirus patient is a medical screener at LAX airport.
One of the newly announced coronavirus cases in Los Angeles county is a medical screener at Los Angeles International Airport, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
This contract worker had not been at work for more than a week before developing symptoms, DHS says. It is unclear whether the virus was contracted through their work with travelers or via community spread.
The patient is currently isolated at home with mild symptoms.
New York confirms 5 new cases of coronavirus. 1,000 people asked to self-quarantine. A total of six people across metro New York are infected with coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.
They include the city's first case of community spread -- meaning the source of infection is unknown.
That patient, an attorney in his 50s, is hospitalized at New York-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
The man has an underlying respiratory condition that made him more vulnerable to the virus, said Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of the New York State Department of Health.
The attorney has connections across metro New York City. He works at the Lewis and Garbuz law firm in Manhattan, and his family lives in suburban Westchester County.
His 20-year-old son attends Yeshiva University in Manhattan, and his 14-year-old daughter attends SAR Academy and High School in the Bronx.
Now, the man's wife, son, daughter and a neighbor who drove him to the hospital are all infected with coronavirus, Cuomo said.
About 1,000 people are being asked to self-quarantine after the five latest cases, Cuomo said.
** (New Article) **
The family from New Rochelle is believed to have been in contact with the 50-year old attorney (https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/04/health/new-york-coronavirus-cases/index.html), who has since been hospitalized. The attorney and his family were confirmed to have the virus earlier today.
This brings the total number of confirmed cases in New York to 11.
We have learned of 5 new confirmed cases of #COVID19 (https://twitter.com/hashtag/COVID19?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw), bringing the total of confirmed cases to 11.
The cases are all in a single family from New Rochelle: A 46yo woman, her 45yo husband, and 3 of their children.
The entire family is under self-quarantine.https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-04-20-intl-hnk/index.html

11 passengers and 10 crew members on Grand Princess cruise ship are symptomatic. There are 11 passengers and 10 crew members on the Grand Princess cruise ship that are “symptomatic,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a press conference today.
The ship, which is currently off the coast, is holding hundreds of passengers, Newsom said.
The ship, which departed from San Francisco to Mexico from February 10-21, returned to San Francisco and left for Hawaii on February 21.
Over 50% of the 2,500 passengers from the cruise to Mexico are Californians, Newsom said. Some of these passengers stayed and went on the second cruise to Hawaii on the same ship.

UK health officials have moved into the second phase of their response to the coronavirus outbreak.
In the "delay" phase measures will be ramped up to slow the spread of the virus, the country's chief medical adviser Prof Chris Whitty said.
He told MPs it was "highly likely" some people now being infected in the UK have no connection to overseas cases.
Three new cases of the virus in Scotland have brought the total number of positive tests in the UK to 90.
Speaking to MPs on the health and social care committee, Prof Whitty said the country was now "mainly" in the delay phase of the government's four-part plan to tackle the virus, but was still following aspects of the first phase.
It is still being decided what measures will be taken in the delay phase - but the government has said they could include banning big events, closing schools, encouraging people to work from home and dissuading the use of public transport.

Sadly inevitable and certainly foreseeable.

Wuhan hospital reportedly warns of increasing relapses in discharged coronavirus patients.Jiang’an hospital in Wuhan, the city at the epicenter of the coronavirus’ spread, warned Wednesday of increased cases in which discharged patients were subsequently re-diagnosed with the disease, according to a report in The Paper, a state-funded online news platform.https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/05/coronavirus-latest-updates-china-south-korea-cases.html
Whether these increasing numbers are relapses or reinfections, this is NOT a good sign. This virus could turn out to be much worse than previously thought. I pray this isn't true. But if it is, we could be in very serious trouble, because I've read that relapse/reinfection can be much deadlier for the patient- greatly increasing the chance of heart failure and other complications the second time around. I'm guessing that's why that whistle-blower Chinese doctor and other young medical workers in their 20s and 30s have died. :o
Germany confirms 109 new cases within 24 hours. Germany has recorded 109 new coronavirus patients within 24 hours, according to the German centre for disease control.
There are now 349 cases in the country.https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-05-20-intl-hnk/index.html
Stay safe, Skybird. I think the virus is about to hit Germany hard like it is in Italy and South Korea.

Thanks, but I think the virus is going to strike hard EVERYWHERE. Its only a question of time and what place goes earlier and what place goes later.
A German media today quoted somebody (forgot who it was) who said that while vaccines will take their time until next year, medical drugs that could be used to battle symptoms and easing them will be available much earlier and maybe as early as this summer.
Currently its all about delaying, and winning time.

The Chinese say they have identified TWO strains of Covid-19 which means in plain English the virus already has mutated once. The more agressive one is the younger, new strain (L-strain), currently responsible for 70% of infection cases. The older one they call the S-strain.
This makes developing a vaccine more complicated, since you need at least TWO vaccines now, one for every strain.
It gets worse if the virus mutates further.

People in the Wuhan area of China that had the covid-19 and were cleared as not having the virus anymore are now reporting back in as having the same problems again.
I suspect this transfer of the covid-19 virus in people that don't have any visible symptoms may be causing more problems than we can understand.

IF antigenic drift accumulates far enough to make a difference. As it is now I dont think we're at the stage of requiring two vaccines for these S and L strains of the same virus

Los Angeles coronavirus patient is a medical screener at LAX airport.
GREAT! I just picked up one of our employees in Cleveland, Ohio.
He flew in from LAX!
:o
Not saying We are infected but just goes to show how FAST things could spread!
I could have missed it, if some of you have mentioned how long it takes from a person gets infected and until this person start to infect others.
Reason why is what have happened here in Denmark today.
A former national team player had been in Amsterdam and efter this he went to see a football match between two top team in our highest division.
One of them was his former football club.(Broendby)
After the game he met former college and fans.
So now 13 or more football players are in quarantine and the Danish health department have sent a public annoncement out to the public.
If they have met this player(Thomas) shaken his hand, given him a hug or been about 2 meters or less from him.
This event - the football match, the meetings between this Player(Thomas) and his college and their fans toke place this Sunday(1 March)
Therefor how long does it take from a person gets infected and until they start to infect others ?

Incubation time could be 24, maybe even 27 days (knowledge point mid-February). That people are being quarantined for only 14 days, tendency falling, I have the feeling is just for practical reasosn, not medically founded reasons. Everything would break down probably if you send quarantined shifts home for almost 4 instead of 2 weeks. As I said yesterday, in some German hospitals contact persons in hospital staff teamsare not beign send into quarantine anymore at all, and worsE: in more and more hospitals and care institutions they must do like this.
Everybody who can should practice self-isolation now: avoid social and practical opportunities where oyu expose yourself to the risk coming form having to endure close proximity to other people. Avoid public transportation like trains, subways, busses.
Evade and avoid, reject and refuse.
Pharmacies more and more even run out of isopropyl alcohol and ethanol to create your own desinfectants (with water, glycerine).
Vodka and Malts will be out next. Thats the time when it really gets hard.

Washington state confirms 20 more cases, 1 new death.Seattle and King County officials announced 20 new cases of the virus, bringing total confirmed cases in the county to 51. That brings the total in Washington state to 70, according to the state Department of Health. The new infections outside of Seattle drove the U.S. case count to 197.
Local health officials also confirmed a new fatality, bringing the total number of deaths in the U.S. to 12. “This is a critical moment in the growing outbreak of COVID-19 in King County,” Seattle and King County said in a statement.https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/05/coronavirus-latest-updates-outbreak.html
New York confirms 11 more cases.
There are 22 confirmed cases of coronavirus across New York state, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Thursday afternoon.
Eleven cases were confirmed overnight, he said.
“Eight of the new cases are connected to the attorney from Westchester,” he said, adding, two of the cases are from New York City and one is from Long Island.
Italy confirms 41 more deaths from coronavirus. Italy’s Civil Protection Agency has announced that 41 additional people have died in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of fatalities to 148.
According to Borrelli, the number of those who have so far recovered from the virus has risen from 276 confirmed recoveries – as reported on Wednesday – to 414. Currently, 1790 patients remain in hospital, 351 individuals are in intensive care, and 1155 are in self-isolation.https://edition.cnn.com/asia/live-news/coronavirus-outbreak-03-05-20-intl-hnk/index.html
Currently in Italy, the number of those infected requiring hospitalization (2,141) vs home isolation (1,155) is almost double. I keep reading reports that on average, only 20% of infected people require hospitalization. This is way higher than that. Perhaps northern Italy has a large elderly population, or maybe this virus is more dangerous than first thought.
Even more disturbing is only 414 patients have recovered so far. I'm wondering if they are seeing increasing numbers of relapses or reinfections like in China.
Lovely.

Coronavirus patient ignored self-isolation order to go to business event
New Hampshire’s first coronavirus patient shrugged off his quarantine and went to an event in a different state — potentially exposing almost 200 people to the deadly illness, officials revealed. The dimwit Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center staffer showed symptoms of the virus after returning from a trip to Italy, and was told to stay home while awaiting test results — which came back positive Monday, state health officials said.
But three days earlier, he had ignored the instructions and gone to a party over the border in Vermont, officials said.
“Despite having been directed to self-isolate, [he] attended an invitation-only private event on Friday,” the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement.
About 175 people were at the bash, organized by Dartmouth’s Tuck School of Business and held at The Engine Room in White River Junction, right across the river from the New Hampshire hospital.
@ Skybird.
Thank you for your answer.
It was not exactly what I was asking.
So I will create an example
Person A get infected on day zero time zero(let pretend he shake hand with another person around noon-12 pm)
We know or I have been told this virus infect during its Incubation time.
What I would like to know is, when does Person A start to infect others ?
Is it after time zero+12 hours or time zero+24 hours or later ?
Because if it's after 24 hours or earlier then those young men who had been near this Danish Football player(Thomas)can have infected others, before they had been told they could be infected.

Far more dangerous? Not likely, doctors, nurses, geneticists, scientists, all 'medical professionals' have a pretty good understanding how coronavirus including COVID-19 works. I would even go so far as to say the mystery is pretty much over. We also have a truck load of statistical information on how and who it affects by age group. We should know by now it is the elderly who are going to get hit hardest by this virus outbreak as is the case with even the common flu. Italy's elderly makes up almost 25% of their population. Only country I know of that has more is Japan. I expect death rates to be much higher in those countries for that reason.
