Could be next to the coal power plant but not on its premises. The owners wouldn't want to get into trouble.

When I first saw your post, it brought to mind when I first saw that particular one liner. In the neighborhood in San Francisco where I grew up, just around the corner from my house was a little store, Bill's Corner Grocery. Bill and his wife used to collect and tack up little card signs, with quips, jokes and clever sayings, all along the front of the upper shelves behind the counter; your posted line was one of those cards. I remember them pretty well, so I'll share another of Bill's cards:

"If you nose runs and your feet smell -- you're built upside down."

Another place in my neighborhood also posted humorous cards, Al's Barber Shop (Al also gave me my first ever haircut). One card he posted, funny and a bit dark:

One day, I sat on the curb, depressed and downhearted.
Then a voice from above spoke: "Cheer up - things could be worse!".
So I cheered up and, sure enough!!
Things got Worse!!

Yesterday, I was on the way home when I happened to see something that caused me to think (yes, the pain was excruciating). There is/was an Armenian church, a one-time cathedral, built in the early 1920s, that, for several weeks, had been in the process of being demolished. It stands/stood down the block and around the corner from my place. The parishioners had been raising funds for many years to replace the old church since it suffered some major damage during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and, now, they are prepared to rebuild. I had seen the church go through many phases since I first moved into the neighborhood in 1975. Back then, aside from the regular Sunday services, with the parishioners dressed in the customary black clothing, there were a good many weddings held there, some with old-world touches like ceremonial horse-drawn carriages. In later years, there would be baptism services and celebrations. In recent years, the trend has been more towards funeral services. The circle of life in forty-odd years...

The bulk of the building was gone and the only remaining part was the wall serving as the entrance facade to the church, about three-and-a half to four stories tall. The facade once held some very beautiful stained glass windows and was, like the rest of the building very solidly built, one of the reasons the demolition took weeks to get to that point. I saw they had moved in a very large Caterpillar vehicle equipped with one of those claw/bucket contraptions at the end of a long, long arm. The intent was to grip the top of the facade and pull it inward and downward back towards the cleared lot behind it. I decide to watch the process and sat down on a low wall across the street and about 100 feet way from the demo site. For about 45 minutes, they clamped onto the top of the wall and pulled with all the Caterpillar had, but the wall barely budged. They then tried taking chunks out of the wall, to little effect. The old girl wasn't going without a good fight. Finally, the wall weakened and, as a solid whole, fell over backwards on the ground. There was a loud thud and I could feel a very noticeable tremor under the ground beneath the wall I upon which I sat. It was, to say the least, impressive...

Its always said to see an old, familiar building disappear, more so when the building has served as a place of reverence, celebration, and refuge and memories for so many people. I'm not religious myself, but I do respect others' beliefs and practices and I felt for those people and thought it to be somewhat appropriate the that building, that church, like the faith of those who worshiped there, held strong...

Just my little thought...

Interesting day in Finnish politics: cabinet broke up. In Saturday True Finns party held convention in Jyväskylä. End result was that current leadership was ousted (okay, chairman Timo Soini was retiring) and replaced with "immigration critical" and "EU critical" people. There is chairmand and three vice chairmen and two of them have convictions for "agitation against group of people" (my lousy translation). In other words True Finns politics is likely to move quite far to right from where it is now.

First demand from new leadership was even stricter immigration policy. Today after meeting with True Finns new chairman Jussi Halla-aho prime minister Juha Sipilä and minister of treasury Petteri Orpo decided that continued co-operation with True Finns was not feasible. Reason cited was too large difference in values.

Prime minister will meet president tomorrow to deliver his requiest to dismiss cabinet. Now there will be new negotiations about cabinet but there are only two parties (Swedish People's Party & Christian Democrats) willing to participate. Others demand general election. This means that if negotiations lead into formation of new government there will be only single seat majority (101 of 200 seats) in parliament.

I personally prefer new general elections as that would most likely wipe True Finns from second largest party (by seats, not votes) to small opposition party. However I understand that it is not likely as prime minister's own party isn't doing that well in polls as before...

P.S. The new third vice chairman is Our Good Representative (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=193044) Teuvo Hakkarainen. He is also second highest ranking convict after chairman Jussi Halla-aho...

Is it true that in Finland you are trying out this idea of a "National Wage" (where everyone is paid a basic income instead of support from a benefits system)? If so, I'd be interested to know how this is going as I think it's an excellent idea.

Is it true that in Finland you are trying out this idea of a "National Wage" (where everyone is paid a basic income instead of support from a benefits system)? If so, I'd be interested to know how this is going as I think it's an excellent idea. That is true. As far as I know it is currently in planning phase and there should be some sort of test phase before final rollout.

National wage was idea of Green Party and part of their platform in last general elections. Unusually most other parties fell in love with the idea and there seems to be quite large support for it. Primary advantage is that it reduces amount of different benefits and reduces bureaucracy. This should mean easier life for low income people in need of benefits (parties in left love the idea) and it should also reduce overall costs to taxpayer (parties in right love the idea).

Eichhörnchen
06-13-17, 06:34 AM
I believe it's espoused by the Green Party over here too, but none of the others seem to be interested. I think it's a great idea because, as you say, it relieves the burden on the whole benefits system (not least because this can't be defrauded in the way it currently is) and people would keep the incentive to work and improve their lot, being taxed only on what they earned above this 'wage'.

Catfish
06-13-17, 07:09 AM
A unified social help is also thought of in Germany, though i do not see this happening soon. Would help to get rid of a lot of bureaucracy, and good old competition will still see people work more, to be able to afford more.

The middle class slowly but surely gets ruined with the way it is now. Taxes are too high, and the government discourages self-employed work with all kinds of obstacles, apart from needing 90 or so percent of the time to fill in forms and communicate with the office of inland revenue. And if you do not keep them informed all the time, they estimate your income and demand taxes for it. You then have to prove that it was less, but only after you paid. And then maybe you get a refund, a year later

And e.g. dustbins, you have to automatically have at least two if you have an office, and you pay for lending and emptying those if you need/use it or not. You need a kitchen, a restroom a.s.o. with workers, even if they are only there half a day. Escape routes, fire regulations etc.. While this is important and ok for big companies, it breaks your back as a startup.
If you want to generate a revenue of say 1500 Euros after tax and expenses, you need an income of 8000.
Been there, done that. Cured me pretty soon.

Funnily enough just of all the EU now tries to reduce paperwork and this unnecessary bovine scatology, by higher order. Germany's national government blockheads are crying wulf about that of course :03:
"It is our country and we say what happens or not".. oh yes, but it is also the country of all those other people, so.. go to hell.

Update in Finnish cabinet crisis:

Today's big news was that True Finns' parliamentary group has fragemented into two sections: 15 seat origninal - now rather radical - True Finns and 22 seat moderate section know as "Uusi vaihtoehto" (New option). This splinter group which includes all ministers and ousted leadership will continue in cabinet. Thereforesufficient majority exists and crisis is cancelled.

Kristall-Weizen = filtered wheat beer, in english. You can add a slice of lemon to the the filtered version, in Bavaria they may also add 2-3 rice corns.; the CO2 precipitates at the corns and causes a light bubbling which also keeps up the head.

We also spoke of a Di-Lithium chrystal wheat beer drive, after 4-5 of those glasses. Beware of the Aventinus dark wheat non-chrystal variant :03:

Winter is good you sleep better unlike summer people have a short fuse.

Which is why people in the Middle East are so.. enchanted, while northern people are.. phlegmatic :03:

One day, I was sitting on a bench in a Japanese garden in front of statue of Buddha. I was surprised when I suddenly heard a voice start asking me questions, and, turning around realized the statue was talking. Stunned, all I could do was try to answer the questions. The statue asked a barrage of questions and I soon began to get a bit irritated: It was then I realized what was going on and I forgave the statue its inquisitiveness: it was, after all, just a case of...

...idol curiosity...

I stopped understanding math when the alphabet decided to get involved.
It took me a bit longer. Not only was the English alphabet already involved, but the Greek alphabet started getting involved.
