A piece of string walked into a bar and said "Gimme a beer!" but the bartender said "Get outta here! We don't serve your kind here!" So the string left, but he was thirsty, and he really wanted a beer, so he messed up his hair real badly and looped himself around until he had tied himself into a knot. When the string went back into the bar, the bartender looked at him suspiciously and said "Aren't you that worthless piece of string I just threw outta here?" No, the string replied, "I'm a frayed knot!"

There is a guy in a paramotor outside my office window, don't know if I should be worried for him or not? I've just checked and there is ~20 km/h wind from the SW, if he goes much further East he'll be over the Humber Estuary, and after that, if he doesn't get down onto Spurn Point he'll be heading towards the Netherlands! He's already over industrial land, power stations/oil refinary/etc... :o

Look at me, I'm a medium!

After relatively uneventful day go to sleep. Sleep for two hours. Wake up hearing the doggie is puking its intestines all over the place. Joy. Check the dog, check the damage, clean up, go back to sleep. Close your eyes: BAM! Away goes an hour and it starts all over again. And again. And again.

Eventually look at the clock and notice it's already 6am. Grumble, mumble, swear and curse. Get the collar and take the dog out for a walk. Step out of the door and notice the blizzard of the year has decided to arrive just today. Walk 1,5 hours in a blizzard hoping the bloody dog gets its bowels moving.

Come back home, have the doggie puke again. Check the dog, check the damage, clean up. Call the vet. Pay 140€. Come back home. Grumble, mumble, swear and curse.

You know which song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2UP86bciVA) has been playing in my head for the whole day?

Puking is as natural as can be. Puking once per hour for almost 12 hours is not. But for what it's worth, the worst is likely to be over. Nothing that rice and buttermilk couldn't fix in a few days anymore.

Whooooops, got surprised by an ice patch today and my car became lovers with a road-side rock.

Don't worry, I'm allright, the car suffered not even minimun of any drive-related damage. A litle bent steel and some displaced plastic.

It was interesting to see just how slippery the road was. The car stopped perpendicular to the road and then me and some friendly hiker, that was nearby, just pushed and rotated the whole car like it was a childs toy

I'm not complaining per se. Both candidates are at least among the better ones. It warmed my heart a lot to see Mr. Fish's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paavo_V%C3%A4yrynen) self-confident face turn more and more desperate when he watched the percentages of a green homosexual climb past his own and thus dropping him from the second round.

But it doesn't matter! The whole race is one big farce when ever since the last elections six years ago Niinistö has been cuddled by the media: "don't cwy little Sauli, you'll be the pwesident next time." They could have just saved everyone's time and say: "...and therefore, by the exception to the rule, we are not holding elections but declaring Niinistö as King of Finland, starting now." I was hoping we'd be over this show after the first round, but no, now they want a second one.

On a brighter note, I got employed for the whole spring and summer on a museum. Work experience from my own field is hard to come by while still studying, so I'm fairly excited.

That's a parody of a local (somewhat humorous) proverb: "A woman's place is between the fist and the stove." They did lots of similar jokes. Another such variation in that episode, which the translator apparently didn't notice, was how that one member of the centre party had left to buy newest issue of the magazine "Ydintekniikan maailma", which is based on Tekniikan Maailma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tekniikan_Maailma), a very popular magazine in here.

It's too bad there are no more translated episodes, as that series really was hilarious. Yes, I say was. It ended when, get it, a few different parties didn't understand the concept of "political satire" and started crying how the series is a big conspiracy against their party and only makes fun of them. I suppose the pressure just got too high to make it worthwile anymore.

Book hint of the day: Machiavelli's "Discourses on Livy" is incredibly boring rubbish. The idea of a renaissance writer taking an antique Roman historian and applying Livy's writings to his own era's Florence is a fairly interesting concept and a good showcase of some aspects of renaissance mentality (the idea of history, the reverence of antiquity etc.), but it's completely ruined by the writing style, namely nonsense stream of consciousness.

Fascinating if you have read "The Prince" and wish to know more about Machiavelli's views towards politics, warfare and republics, but otherwise I can't recommend this.

Since I know there are other dog people here, I'm asking for your help. Can someone please explain to me the big idea behind the "Dog pointer dog" phenomenon that seems to be so common at least in my city?

The usual situation: me and my dog are walking. On a narrow path we meet another dog with its owner and we have no choice except go past each other. A very common situation and one that every dog should be able to handle with no problem, right?

But instead of going past us, the other dog stops and sits down like a good service dog pointing out something it has been taught to search. And the owner does not even try to get it moving, but instead also stops and starts staring me. It dawns to me that he/she is expecting me to go past them, which is much more inconvenient and slow than us both going past each other. Especially when the other dog is usually sitting in the middle of the narrow path and the owner seems to have no idea what to do.

No really, I'm serious here. It seems so common that I have started doubting myself. I have so far thought that it's just yet another case of clueless owner and a lazily trained dog, but surely they can't all be total dimwits? Is this being widely taught somewhere by the experts? Is there some other point that I'm missing? Is there a hidden benefit in just one dog going past the other that I'm failing to see? What happens if two such trained dogs meet on a narrow path?

Edit: spilling my stakes.

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, "Come and see!" I looked and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.

Hi subsimmers. My name is Death. Some old liar wrote that about me, I would really appreciate if you called my horse Pestilence, and it is white, not pale. I am offended.

Your all lucky the seal wasn't undone yet.

Wow. Just wow. I'm not starting a new thread for this or necro the old ones, but I'm flabbergasted. Fuming to follow.

I finally bought Fallout New Vegas, since I loved Fallout 3 and it now had a compilation with all the DLCs included. It arrived today, nice DVD cover and all. As I opened the case, I saw only one DVD and wondered how did they ever stuff all those files into just one disc. These almost always come with at least two if not three.

Well, let's start installing it. The first thing it asked me was: "where do you want to install Steam". I stopped there and was sure I had read wrong, but no, that's what it asked: where do you want to install Steam. Not Fallout.

Having already grudgingly accepted to install Windows Live for some other games, I cursed under my breath and thought OK, let's install Steam. After all, it only said that Steam is needed to authenticate the game. It was beyond me why I couldn't just authenticate the game by writing the CD-key down during the installation like in the old days, but OK then, this can't be too bad.

I'm now a proud owner of a brand new Steam account that I didn't want. I gave it an appropriate name to reflect my quickly declining good mood and wrote down the CD-key as it requested.

OK, authentication worked. Can I start now? No. No I can't. Now I must download the game I had just physically bought from a shop from Steam. At this point I was sure there was a huge misunderstanding and checked what there was on the DVD I had just taken out of the case. There was the Steam installer. Basically nothing else.

Now I'm downloading 5GB on my slow connection, using a program that I didn't even want. All I ever wanted was to buy a game, install it and play it. You know, like they used to work. But apparently I'm too old fashioned.

And I figure there are already similar rants like this out there and I'm not actually saying anything everyone else didn't already know. As I said, I just wanted to fume while waiting for the next day or two for that 5GB to download.

Good god, I thoughts to myself, "maybe the internetz knows what a brony is?":hmmm:

So I looked it up:
Bronies simply means people who are of an older age group and like to watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. There is nothing particularly exciting about this, but they make a big deal out of it.

Jump on to a forum most places online, and you will see these people often pushing their fandom. As in, you will be on a forum for cars, and someone will have their display picture as a pony, and all their posts will be about ponies. Then when people accuse them of being off topic, they go into a rant about acceptance, as if watching a cartoon is some sort of big revelation.

Subculture is one thing, but it is a totally other thing to push it into people's faces and then get upset. It would be like heavy metal fan jumping on to a My Little Pony forum and spending their whole time talking about metal, and then getting upset that they aren't well received.

And I still dare anyone to watch a few episodes of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and then try to say the same sort of thing. I do know a few people who were like "this is alright but seriously guys, I don't understand why you're crazy over it" but I don't know anyone who actually hated it. Took me a while to convert, myself (and yes, I initially thought bronies were idiotic and creepy), but after actually sitting down to watch it I can say that this is easily the best children's show of the past decade. And if you have a problem with adults who like good kids' cartoons, then something is seriously wrong with you.

I actually met Andrea Libman (the voice actress for Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy) this weekend at a local event. She was super-nice and was actually pretty impressed with the behaviour of the show's adult fans, who by and large are socially normal and good people, hardly different from the average nerd or collector of shiny trinkets. Not like those creepy ones who sit around and pretend to be Nazi submarine captains in their basement all weekend :D

You're old Steve, you don't count :O:

It's worth pointing out though that "bronies" as such are a reference to the new series that started airing in late 2010 and has very little in common with the old My Little Pony of 30 years ago other than, well, ponies. Very different style, presentation, characters, themes. I can't look at the old stuff without cringing either (it's old, poorly written, very conservative in the way it portrays girls and what they like), but the new show is pretty cool. It's got a very modern style, diverse cast, and is really well-written (for a little girls' show, which it still is no matter what some bronies claim). I'd be pretty horrified to associate myself with the old pony cartoons too, but this new one's pretty neat.

The difference between the old MLP series and the new one is massive, and yes I speak from experience having seen both. :O:
The new series is much less saccharine in its presentation, yes there's still lessons about friendship and such forth, but it is genuinely funny in many places and cute in others. All in all a feel good show.
Furthermore, it's not often that the creators of a show actually react and appreciate their fanbase as the ones of Friendship is Magic have done.
A good example is Derpy who began life as an animation error and has since, through the fans, actually become canon and gotten her own voice actress.
It's obviously not everyones cup of tea, and I'm not going to stand here and tell you all that you should watch it and if you don't then you're being offensive to bronies or some such nonsense, however I have had a good smile and chuckle out of watching it so far and I'm glad I'm not alone in this respect.

Blasphemy, gentlemen! I found this thread from the third page! Third page! We can't have that now can we?

Um, actually I had a comment too, that's why I started looking. I have yet to solve the mystery of dogs who can't go past other dogs (for some reason there is always a great song playing in my MP3-player whenever it happens), but I have finally solved the problem of those bloody dog lovers who think it's their human right to come babbling and patting my mutt without asking permission. Behold the power of psychology whenever I in those situations utter the words "sic, boy" and the cute, pleasant retriever in their eyes changes into a bloodthirsty monster, whose favorite snack is human fingers.

It's all just act, of course. I taught the lad to jump towards the given target and pinch it with his teeth. He's a retriever, pinching stuff with teeth without causing any damage is pretty much what he was born to do. So far he hasn't even done all that: just the jumping part is enough to make the blasted mongrel huggers take a good few steps back double time and let us continue on our merry way.

Lesson of the day: the most effective to deal with the crazy people is to make them think you are even crazier than they.

Had a great couple of days! Sunday was in the 60s F, so out came my bike and I immediately discovered a bike trail near my place that I was not aware of. Two hours later I was home, exhausted, guzzling iced tea and happy as a clam. Yesterday I did it all over again, but not for as long, since my legs were pretty beat up from the day before. Today it was warm but windy, so a long walk coupled with a short jog was in order.

I didn't get much work done, but I'm feeling pretty good. :sunny:

sedative ofc :DD

once, i was stupid enough to replace white parking lights' bulbs with some fancy blue ones. It took me sth like 1 hour to do that, and the next day I was going for the check. There is usually one of two guys there- an older guy which is pretty OK, and the second- a slightly older than me- a real fag. On that day I was unlucky enough to have my car checked by that fag. And so he said: "everything is fine except for the bulbs, don't you know the regulations? White/yellow lights in the front, red in the back." Basically it was almost over, fortunately the older guy came (the chief) and asked the fag what was wrong with my car. When he heard about the bulbs he asked me if I would replace them if they gave me the signature. So I said: "Sure thing" and...didn't replace them...pwned :D

Sorry ladies and germs, but I just got to complain a little :dead:

The accident streak I had at work almost ended very badly for me. Not fatal but stil cripling. 2 weeks ago I fell 5m of a ladder, last week a hatch model fell on my head (and the model broke) and on tuesday I was preparing poliester resin when the container lid blew off and a fountain of hardener landed on my head and some of it in my eye. Butanox M-50 as it is called is a mixture of diferent chemicals including hydrogen peroxide and I felt the eye melting...
Well, I was lucky, my reaction was fast and (almost) calm and I managed to get out of it unscaved. Just half of my face looks like I've been tanning a bit too much and the tearducts are still closed due to inflamed area around the eye. :dead:
I'm getting accident insured finnaly, because of Murphy's laws I'll be fine afterwards :03:
And during a check up today at the doctor I found out that I am as blind as a wastebin and I'm getting glasses :dead:

But that complaining fades away after the fact that I've been to two funerals this week. A friends mother and another friends father :-?

And it's only thursday :damn:

I work for a contractor in the company. And there's only 3 of us. Seaway pays my employer per hour of my (and their) work and I get that money minus all the taxes and social security. Insurances are something we take care of ourselves.
As long as theirs work we're payed more than a regular employee at the company, but we don't get the sick leave payed since Seaway doesn't pay my employer if I'm not there

IIRC there is only one antibiotic that you shouldn't drink on, all the others are just associated with that one. Check with your pharmacist, or if you want, have a drink - if you're throwing up within 10 minutes* that's the one you should avoid drinking with.
