For a few weeks, several years ago, I would come home and find periodic messages on my answering machine from some fellow with an Asian accent who had dialed the wrong number. He was making a trip to Los Angeles and was letting the intended party know of his progress and expected date of arrival. He left neither a name nor a phone number and my machine could not record the calling number. The eventual upshot was me answering the phone one weekend and hearing the fellow, in broken English, saying he was at the airport and asking when he was going to be picked up. I explained to him his previous calls had gone to the wrong number he was now calling and I had no way of alerting either himself or his intended party. The best I could do for him was to advise him to seek out the Traveler's Aide kiosk at the airport or the security office for assistance. Never heard from him again, but I do hope he was able to make contact with his friends...

Sent an sms to Aaron today and my moron of a ''smart'' phone decided to send the sms to his old, US phone number (+001) which I kept because of reasons unknown instead of his Slovene (+386) number.

So some poor yenk got an sms today that I can't make it to Kranj because I got overtime to do and how he's working tomorrow.

He was polite enough to answer ''sorry, worng number, life sucks''

:rotfl2:

Most likely yes and most likely no.
The retards that still practice it usually skin the dogs alive, part barbarism part keeping the meat fresh. So live dogs were kidnaped. Maybe to use on some non-cooperating dogs.

My mothers laptop finally cied yesterday. The OS decided it had enough of 6 year worth of living (a lot of crap is installed and makes the system slugish), so I made a clean install yesterday.
Today she calls me at work that she played with her installation disk and mamaged to screw up the installation and that she'll just buy a new one and if I can fix the old one, I can keep it.

My wife and I both get mad when we see people leave the toilet without washing their hands. Last week I was taking a pee in the supermarket toilet and this dirty sod marched out of one of the cubicles, then straight out the door. I quickly washed my hands and followed him; he'd had time to disappear, but guess where he was when I caught up with him? In the fruit & veg department, squeezing bloody mangoes!

I mentioned it again to my wife this morning, saying I'd felt a bit guilty afterwards for not telling a member of staff. I wasn't about to tell him I'd seen him putting his cruddy fingers all over the mangoes; he was about 25, way over six feet, and might've said "How about I put my cruddy fingers around your throat, you interfering little bastard?"

Please don't get me started on that one! :hulk:

I suggest you tell and everyone else tell the store to put up notices please wash your hands and not just march out spreading your germs all over the fresh fruit and veg. I get angry at people groping fresh produce to see how plump it is, how fresh it is, how soft it is, how this and that it drives me mad.

Last week I had ago at at some bloke in his 20's telling him to get off the payment riding his bike and ride it on the road. After telling him he has broken section 64 of the Highway act which states "You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement" I got the normal F-off from these swine. I say swine as every one I have spoken to they think they have this given right above the law to do as they please!

One of my favourite tricks would be not to dry my hands after washing them in a pub toilet and hopefully, on your way out of the toilet you'd meet someone you knew coming in.

Not often it happened but when it did, the act of shaking their hand with a greeting would usually bring a slightly delayed reaction of disdain or shock.

One thing that really gets me mad in summer is these people who have bonfires and this month so far the stench of four of them have stunk my room out! Like most people around here we open our windows for some fresh air and cooler air at night, we don't need the pong of a burnt out bonfire wafting it's way in so we have to close the windows!

There's an unemployment crisis in Slovenia but our and the neighbouring nautical company suffers from a lack of workers. We were given instructions to scout for people to work there ourselves, either they have the trade education or not. If a waiter has enough common sense to know that a screw is screwed and a nail is hammered we will employ.

And we don't care about gender, women are even better in such a delicate industry.

But no, people rather sit at home and wait until a dream job in a A/C office for a few thousand euros per month will jump up and bite :/\\!!

When summer hits it's nice and hot. It's preparing them before that presents a problem.

I'd tell you if I knew the details.
Overwatering, underwatering, over feeding, starving...

Don't water until you can push your finger in soil and is dry,
water in the morning, if you water in the evening the dampness might cause molding,
keep water away from leaves but water the entire plant on a sunny day once in a while to wash the dust off,
protect the plant in late autumn so wind doesn't chill it during winter
keep the dog away, dog urine burns the plants

The list can go on and on

Need more data.
Which plants do you have exactly, and what are the conditions: Soil, rain, sun, shadow, half shadow etc.. Usually you use the southside of the house for this, and the north for that a.s.o.
Since it can get already warm in England/Ireland in march due to the gulf stream, the weather should be a bit milder than the continental weather (?)

Appreciate that and regarding the latter two....

All the plants I purchase are rated as hardy enough to withstand a British winter, which is just as well because the wife would hardly warm to seeing thirty of the buggas in the conservatory.

The pots are all taller than the height the dog can lift his leg.

Need more data.

I could make a list but that would entail reading all the labels.

Best if I generalise in saying they are all or mostly supposed to be hardy perennials (with a few exceptions) planted in pots of varying shapes and sizes (I'll add a picture or three shortly after the rain stops) containing general purpose compost for soil.

The property is south facing so they don't get an awful lot of direct sunlight until the afternoon.

I water approx. twice a week and feed liquid moracle-gro via a hose attachment once a fortnight.

Pots you say :hmmm:

Do the pots have holes on the bottom ??
Without good drainage all that English rain and water cause root rot.

Before the plants start dying, to they yellow their older, lower leaves and the yellowing works upwards :hmmm:

And check the pH levels. Fertilizer may make the soil acidic for a base loving plant and vice versa. Every apothecary should have pH tests and then just google what pH the plant thrives in and compare your findngs.

Jimbuna
07-24-16, 11:27 AM
Yep, all pots have drain holes and no, the yellowing does not occur but I did fail to 'cut back' the stems etc. prior to the last winter.

As for PH....I've never committed to that level of detail since I stopped breeding Malawi Cichlids :o

Anyhoo....here are a few iPhone shots taken shortly after the rain sibsided, not the best quality but they should give a clue to the trained eye as to what some of the plants are.

And keep them pruned, too much growth can stress the plant already strugling with limited root space.

Not really, they just don't grow back again after winter.

I'm guessing low temperature and high moisture causes them to rot during winter.
You just leave the pots as they are or you cover them with anything ??

We have snow and snow makes an insulation over the ground to protect the root from wind, cold and moisture (snow actually dries things until melting), but England has rainy winters and the rain constantly soaks the soil when the plant sleeps and doesn't absorb any of the water plus the low temperatures ensures low evaporation.

During autumn dry the soil (keep it lightly moist, but not wet), place all the pots in a bundle in a corner, preferably where they're shielded from the wind and cover them with something to prevent soaking.

The rest of your response is new and interesting, especially to me, (someone who knows very little if anything).

I'll take all the advice I can get, otherwise the alternative is to keep forking out coin of the realm.

Betonov
07-25-16, 04:10 PM
The tricky part is that you want to keep the soil dry during winter, but not bone dry.
Temperatures wont' be a problem since you said the plants are hardy enough, but still protect them from wind.

I bought dahlias this year and in the autumn I'll need to dig out the tubers (roots), wash them, dry them, pack them in dry sand and store them in the cellar over winter. That's how some perennials have to be wintered.
My grandmother gets me to chop some spruce branches in autumn and she covers the tulip flower bed to protect the bulbs from the cold and excessive water.

Jim you really were thorough in photographing and putting all this here :up:
Betonov is of course right about roots and rotting, in winter.

Cannot comment about all..

1st i thought it was Cypress grass, but it is Sciadopitys verticillata (Umbrella pine indeed) as shown on the label. A living fossil, they are around since at least 200 million years, without change! They grow slowly and can become quite large, but probably not in a pot.. rainfall and humidity should suit them well, but not wind.
On a sidenote, they used to cover large areas in the baltic millions of years ago, most of the amber that can be found there comes from those umbrella pines, that reached more than 40 meters.

Mountain Fire - hmm no idea.

Salvia is Salbei in german, very nice smell in summer and bees and butterflies love them, there can be even swarms of the latter around them (we have peacock butterflies and red admirals here). Leaves can be used in the kitchen for seasoning. It grows in relatively dry conditions here, loves warm places (maybe a warmth-reflecting wall or something behind it) and likes sand with not too much humus as substrate. But is generally not so picky, grows well if you do not water too much.

Asian Lilies - pretty, but no idea. Usually they grow well an need quite some water, no direct sun, but you better ask someone else :03:

Euonymus fortunei 'Emerald 'n' Gold' - while "Emerald and gold" may be advertising poetry, this is really a pretty ground cover that should pose no problems. I think it even grows underwater, I remember to have had that in an aquarium or paludarium over some time. Very tough and grows well.

Photinia - should be kept moist in a permeable substrate, in a protected place and half-shadow (no direct sun, or only for short time a day). It sure does not like wetness, then losing its foliage quickly. Needs a lot of humus in the soil/substrat, maybe bark mulch for protection against evaporation. A wall at its back often makes it grow better, maybe because of said protection.
Still gardeners around say we should only water when the upper soil becomes dry. So.. moist, but not wet, should be able to drain. And use ordinary fertiliser, during spring.

Astilbe 'Deutschland' ?? WTH they are from Japan lol. Called "Prachstspiere" here. Should be kept moist, and half-shadow is better; have to be watered throughly and often when exposed to the sun. They are very pretty, wife likes them. I think one of those destroyed the pot it was planted in, it really grows strong rhizomes, or roots.

Alstroemeria Inticancha 'Red' and 'Passion' (Peruvian Lilys) - "Inka-Lilie" here. Looks pretty but no experience. I heard one should not cut the leaves until they turn yellow, they conserve nutrients for next year. No idea though..

Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' - no experience with this special sort, but should be similar to the Euonymus mentioned above (?)

The last one, hmm. Not a cactus, but sure succulent plants. The lower right looks like an Aloe/Affodil variant and i'd say the seedhead or flowery thing belongs to that.
Cannot identify the other two though  , but also seem to be succulent plants.

Because they have been put into one pot it seems they have similar demands regarding location.. Aloes like warmth and direct sun, and no humidity. It is more of a desert plant.
Maybe it is better to put them inside, in the winter. They can withstand -20 degrees Celsius like in the desert at night, but not for longer periods, and definitley not permanent rain.

If they were in the house during winter, they should be slowly submitted to direct sun outside again, with the intervals becoming longer. Maybe half-shadow and 1-2 hours at midday should be ok for sun-weaned or young plants. Nutrient-poor cactus soil is good for Aloes, should contain some calcium carbonate/lime.

If Aloes develop offshoots (not the flower stands) they will weaken the plant, so cut them off carefully. You can then plant those into new pots, and grow other Aloes.. there's alot in the web of how to exactly do that.

And .. still looking nice

This is about the BEST advertisement for :subsim: seen on a forum these days (I understand Germand pretty well, so I read some German forums, too):

The only drawback on :subsim: is that I am regularly torpedoed and treated like a 4th class moderator and have noone backing me up.

Even my work is destroyed.
See here:

For how long I can stay loyal to Subsim under these circumstances remains open.

You forgot to mention, as I told you, I have been having server issues with the php process and it is because you have been merging, editing and moving a lot of threads daily, every day for months. Remember I sent you a PM a few days ago with a screenshot of the moderator log and it listed all the threads you were moderating, including this particular thread? Do you recall me asking you to cut back on the excessive use of the moderation tools? See, that's the part you left out of your post. No one is torpedoing you, Blitz.

And today I have spent several hours trying to recover this thread that seems to have been corrupted. Unfortunately, the db is nearly 7GB, so it is not easy at all getting a backup uploaded. This is one of the procedures (http://zacksdomain.com/programming/selectively-recover-threads-and-posts-in-vbulletin-4/) I have been trying to use, but still no luck.

I see the level of dubious medical practice is not just limited to the US. As I age, the need for accurate, reliable medical care has become an important issue. The last doctor's appointment I had at the clinic was about the same as your experiences. The fortunate thing about my last visit was there was a visiting attending MD who is a specialist in the area of medicine most affect my condition(s) and he heard about my situation from a young MD who had examined me; the attending came in to see me and, after reviewing my case, said "I believe you may be suffering from chronic or persistent pancreatitis". My response was to show him the various documents I had gathered to indicate the same diagnosis. He order a new set of more focused tests and I will find out the results on the coming Monday. Hopefully, now I'll get treatment to actually ameliorate my problems. Getting old isn't much fun, it is even less so when you've got to do the medical legwork yourself...

I hope the both of you have good outcomes with your conditions...

Hope it all works out good for you.

My condition was minor that of post nasal drip causing loud clicking sound when breathing out. It came on last year and slowly got worst, hardly any sleep at night and becoming cranky. The Doctor believed it to be sleep disorder and was going to send me to a sleep disorder clinic for research!

After doing a spot of research on the Internet I found other people had the same or similar situation. Saw the Doctors again and this time he gave me a nasal spray which has reduced the clicking sound alot and able to to sleep better now.

OK minor but what if it was major? Makes you wonder.

I have had a similar condition off and on for some months now, mainly at night, like your situation. The sound varies from clicks to a sort of whistle. What did the MD say was your cause? Like you said, it mat be something to be looked into and brought up at the next exam...

Sometimes, the whole situation with seeking medical care reminds me of a famous tombstone inscription in a graveyard in the Western US:

He sat there listening to what I found in my research and then went on to recommend a nasal spray and see him in a couple of months. Went back told him there was a improvement and he gave me another nasal spray subscription and will be seeing him again later this month or next month. Strange that he tried it my way, not the normal course of action.

My systems were laying on my left or right side in bed and within 10 minutes the clicking came on. Not a back sleeper due too my left leg has some sort of twitch, no issue on my sides.

Went to the doctor yesterday; brought up the clicking sound issue; according to the doctor, the sounds may be caused by a number of causes: a side affect of asthma (already alluded to in a prior post); a compression of the lungs and airways caused by weight gain, particularly if you sleep on your back; any sort of physical tearing or occlusion of the airway. The doctor did say if the sounds are causing you to wake up during sleep, they may be an indicator of possible sleep apnea, a condition which can have many serious health consequences, particularly if you have high blood pressure (as I do). I'm going to keep an eye on my clicks if they get any worse...

Well your GP should at the very least be booking you in for a Spirometry test (lung function test) which involves blowing into a tube while a computer checks the readings. This will tell him if he's dealing with late onset asthma.

But if he suspects sleep apnoea then one would expect an overnight observational stay in hospital to check your airways during sleep. This has implications for driving... in the UK at any rate: our Vehicle Licensing Authority have to know that any driver with this is receiving effective treatment... important for your insurance.

The MD does not necessarily suspect sleep apnoea; I don't have the 'wake up in the middle of the night" sort of thing and my bouts of the clicks and whistles (good name for a pub near a railway station) are sporadic and not prolonged, so its all very up in the air at the moment; just have to wait and see before undergoing extensive tests. The pancreatitis is taking precedence; they are trying to determine if it is chronic or recurring and what may be the actual cause of the condition. Add to this the appearance of what is called an essential tremor and I am indeed having a 'glorious' aging...

My clicking only came on in bed lying on my left or right side, can't sleep on my back as pointed out on a earlier comment. Clicking came on within 10 minutes of laying down and just got louder on a very bad night. A good night I would just about get off to sleep then I wake up from the clicking or some other reason. I have been a bad sleeper for many years now and the clicking that came on last year did not help.

Any how just to say the nasal spray I am using as subscribed by my GP is Nasofan Aqueous 50mg, one spray up each nostril everyday. Just hope it lasts to Mid September for my next appointment. So far it has reduced the clicking by a good 90% resulting in my stress level going down.

The back sleeping element only comes into play if you have gained weight; otherwise, it seems not to be an element. I don't feel comfortable sleeping on my back; it is too mindful of the whole coffin pose thing. I sympathize with your sleep problems; I have had long bouts of insomnia for almost all my life and added difficulties such as clicking and whistling do nothing the improve the situation. Some of us here have been posting about various medical matters. I just found out a neighbor and good friend of mine for 41 years passed away after suffering a prolonged illness. He was 64, a year younger than me and had been, until the onset of his illness, very healthy and health conscious. Both he and I are of a generation where men tend to just try to push on through health problems without seeking medical assistance, sort of a "walk it off" mentality. He had been diagnosed with diabetes about three years ago. I would often discuss with him his condition and what he was doing to treat it. His doctors would recommend a course of treatment, but, often, he would choose not to take the treatments or do the tests; part of it was probably an ingrained attitude of "real guys" don't need to do this or that, part of it was just as likely squeamishness over the nature of some of the treatments and procedures. We had a strong disagreement when his doctors wanted to put him on dialysis to combat damage done to his kidneys and his refusal to do so. I fear his refusal may have hastened his passing. The real shame of it all is he was a really great person, one of those shirt-off-his-back kind of guys with an impressive moral and ethical compass, the sort of person there are just too, too very few of and whom the rest of society can ill-afford to lose...

If a doctor or other medical professional thinks you need a test or procedure, no matter how inconvenient, painful, or embarrassing, in order to correct or prevent an illness or condition, be man enough to go through with it; the cemeteries are too full of good people who went before their time...

Well I'm back to my old self now, glad the dizzy spells have gone, that sucked big time!!
Now I feel great except for a few slight ailments:
Sciatica
Arthritis
2 Hernias
Eczema
Tinnitus
Not to mention sleeping problems, but hey, this is just called growing old.:yep:

Most definitely....I was diagnosed Diabetic in May (Type 2/tablet controlled) and not having had any serious illness previously in my life must admit I was sceptical initially.

My wife 'encouraged' me to take the condition seriously and adhere to all medical advice as well as taking the tablets as prescribed.

Four months on and all my test results are in the norm again and a further check up is not required until next July.

Good on you, Jim. Diabetes is nothing to take lightly. The list of complications from diabetes is extensive; something seemingly trivial can be an indicator of a larger problem when you have diabetes. The foot injury you had recently could have been worse if it had been linked to diabetes. My doctor says I am currently flirting with pre-diabetes and one of the several things they checks is the condition of my feet. I initially thought this was odd, but I was told some of the first indicators of onset or worsening of diabetes appear in the feet. Your lady is spot on with her "encouragement". Good on her, too...

Well another job ended today the company has closed down and I got a few days to myself before moving to my new job with less hours and less money. Six months of searching and my conclusion where the heck is all these thousands of jobs the government keeps banging on about. As far as I see it the truth is far too many people chasing far few jobs, I shall stop there or I will bang on all day at bashing the government. :)

To all the guys here with your aches and pains along with medical conditions remember the secret is to bang the rocks to together. Not sure how that helps but it has too be better than rolling over and giving up. :know: :)
