^ This reminded me of an incident I saw when I first moved to Los Angeles in 1970: one night, I was feeling in the mood for a midnight snack and I decided to go to a 24 hour burger place a few blocks away; the restaurant was on a wide, major cross street in the area; as I approached the stand, there was suddenly the loud wails of sirens and the roar of car engines with lights flashing; approaching from a few blocks away were a pair of LAPD cars hurtling full blast down the main street; they roared up to the stand and screeched into the parking lot; customers were starting to look for cover fearing some sort of violent police/criminal activity was about to take place; instead; after the cars stopped, the officers emerged laughing - it seems they were racing each other with the loser having to pay for the meal...

Really, usually there is a bunch of enthusiasts who "buy" the boat together, so it is used regularly. And the boat is not paid for, but financed, and maybe even lent out for charter to other people. Most people have not the time to use such a boat as it should be.
Another thing is you have to sail where the boat is based; if you suddenly decide you'd like to sail around Sardinia or in the Carribean, you would have to get the boat there and most people do not have the time.
So for me it is easier to charter – yes it is not the own boat, technical problems because of neglect (seldom though) but you can sail for 2-4 weeks where you want, and you do not need a winter storage.
One of our last trips were from Kiel to Gotland, in a Malö 42. Despite of its mobile home impression it is quite a fast boat, and was in perfect shape.

@Aktung yes, i am mean while not sure though whether the Hallberg-Rassy's red sail isn't indeed a spinnaker? :hmmm:

I don't like morning people... or mornings, or people.

Reminded me of a place I once worked for; because some of my work was dependent on others completing their own tasks, I quite often didn't bother to come in at the regular starting time and started later; saved me from sitting around waiting idly and saved the company having to pay me overtime if I spent over 8 hours on a given day; the supervisor I worked for was one of those overly cheerful positive, types (first to go when I take over the world) and, one day she said she wanted me to come in particularly early the next day for a special project; I am not a 'morning person' by any means; she said she wanted me there "bright and early"; I told her she had a choice: either bright or early, not both...

Do/did they have Mods & Rockers in Oz too?

Rockers yes but not to the same extent as in the UK.
Here in Wallsend they used to hang out at Defoe's Milk Bar ( the pubs wouldn't let them in ). As a group they were only around for a few years in the early 60s. Most of the hardcore guys got killed in crashes and the rest got old, married, moved out of town ( the usual story ). But they were great guys. The cops gave them a hard time and the townsfolk used to shake their heads when they saw them. They were rebels in a VERY conservative time.

Nowadays you'd say it was a poor town, nobody had much money. Then slowly people became more affluent and about the same time the whole "British Beat" ( or whatever they call it ) happened. People had tv's, record shops were everywhere, and the whole Mod thing took off. VERY FASHIONABLE. But that's where it stayed down here - FASHION.

Mod music, Mod clothes, Mod haircuts, but no real violence or dickhead Band behaviour like in the UK - instrument abuse, trashing hotel rooms, heavy drug abuse.

Interestingly, in 1979, there was a bit of a Mod revival in Sydney. They had their own pub at the bottom end of Goulburn street. And outside you'd see all these Vespa's and Puch's with all the mirrors and roundels, and inside they'd all be jumping around to "The Jam" covers.

Funny thing is that a lot of these guys became City Councilors and now run Sydney ( into the ground ).
