It's a sad part of a democracy when you vote for someone not because you support him, but because you hate the other guy more :nope:

I vote since 21 years, country, state, commune & european elections: I remember having voted twice for parties that I supported - and both of don't exist anymore :D

So some (expletive deleted) crashed into/ scraped the side of my truck, creeping into my lane of travel. It ripped a 3 inch hole into my tire and my drivetrain fell out the bottom of my beautiful Ford pickup truck.

It is totalled, oil and gas both leaked into the street.

Thanks to Jersey being a No fault state. Meaning My insurance goes up even though it was his darn fault!

My big F-150 blew his radiator all over the hi-way. The only redeeming factor.

No one was hurt, and no citations issued, just a "stuff" happens kinda thing. Just so crippling financially, especially in my job, where I have to be able to drive far to a site.

So I am kinda bummed out. I loved that freaking truck...:wah:

Ouch, this is bad. This "no fault" insurance sounds ridiculous. Drive like an idiot and get away with it? Scheisse! :stare: So there's no way to get compensation?
I have an insurance that covers everything, even if it's my fault, this is good when someone does a hit and run, but of course if it's my fault the other party gets compensated - and my premiums would go up.
Glad that you didn't get hurt - I hope the other car got also whacked :arrgh!: - in a fair world this would be so...

Insurance companies tend to 'total" the car when they asses. That way they can only give somewhat close to the Kelley blue book value, rather than extensive repairs. The truck was well maintained but had high mileage, due to my 40 mile commute to work everyday.

Well maintained and could have went forever. (It was a ford)

I should be able to go after their insurance company for at least a few grand, but it never equals a good truck.

I mean they told me "remove the bandage only after a good while" (can't remember how long exactly), but it made it practically impossible to do anything requiring two hands, so I thought what the heck, what's the worst that could happen?

Well done for donating, more people should do it - but you're gonna put them off with those tales!!! :stare:

The trick is, when the bit gets removed from your arm to press very firmly for a couple of minutes, then get a plaster (2 x 2 cm) and cover. Also ensure you eat/drink something sweet both before and after.

Unless Finland and Slovenia do something drastically different to the UK to get blood out of your body? :o

Well done for donating, more people should do it - but you're gonna put them off with those tales!!! :stare:
I used to. One of my tales: I was donating once, squeezing the little ball like they said, when it started to hurt. Bad. Real bad. I had tears in my eyes when I said to the nurse "Excuse me. I don't like to think I'm a wimp, but is it supposed to hurt like this?" She came over and gasped, and told me to stop squeezing NOW!. I looked at the bag of blood, and instead of being half full it only had a few drops in it. It seems that the needle had slipped right through the vein and buried itself in the muscle, and the squeezing? Well, I ended up with a yellow bruise that went from my wrist to my elbow, and didn't go away for a couple of weeks.

That was back in 1971. I've given blood many times since, with no problems, until about a decade ago. It seems that they don't want it if you have diabetes. I don't blame them a bit. :sunny:

After they pull the needle out they press a cotton strip on the wound and wrap it tightly with self adhesive elastic bandage that really makes a tight wrap. So tight it starts to sting on the edges. That's why I started to remove it.

but you're gonna put them off with those tales!!! :stare:

Unfortunately I already did that. A friend of mine finnaly took the courage to go donate, and I started talking about a bloodbath that I had with a fresh nurse (not red, sorry). She pierced the vein trough and slowly blood ran down my hand and started dripping on the floor :DL He reconsidered :damn:

(repeat)

und Plötzlich nach einem Jahr
waren die Idiots ein Star
und plötzlich nach einem Jahr
waren 10 rote Mädels da

---

I know there a girl from the rear building
her nice nature catched my eye
whenever I saw this girl,
I thought of a big star

Girl with the red hair
I love you and I want to have you

Her mellow smile on her sweet face
appeared to be from the lines of a love poem
and whenever I don't see her I'm sad
but from her sight I'm becoming crazy

Girl with the red hair
I love you and I want to have you

(repeat)

Suddenly, after one year
The Idiots became a star
and suddenly, after one year
there were 10 red girls there

The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success.

I have a question for English native speakers. We had a small discussion among students in my group concerning the pronunciation of "Stephen" and "Steven"- is "Stephen" pronounced in the same way as "Steven"? In American English they are pronounced the same. I don't know of any regional differences. Usually if you are taking down someone's name from them telling it to you, they will say "with a 'ph'" or "with a 'v'" (or else you have to ask) because that's the only way to tell which way they spell it.

Mostly, yes. There's always one pretentious prick who decides that it should be like Steffan (as in your philosophy), but on the whole it's pronounced as a 'V'. :yep:

The last of the drunken stragglers stumbled up to bed at 4am, the General Manager among them. So that left me three hours to get my jobs done.

And with that all done, now I just have to find a taxi for the poor sod whose taxi our General Manager, in a fit of drunken insightfulness, turned away last night...leaving four staff from another hotel stuck here, with one of them due to start work at 8am this morning.

Good game...good game...

That reminds of the time I was teaching a friend of mine how to pump gasoline in the car as she was just learning to drive. The whole premises of sticking a hose into a hole in the car and squirting a fluid into it makes for a very dirty lesson :arrgh!:

She was not amused

A great many years ago I was at a gas station hanging out with the clerk, who was a friend of mine. A man in a Mercedes pulls up to the pump, puts the handle into the filler valve and nothing happens. He yells at the clerk to flip the switch so he can get his gas. Again nothing happens. So the guy pulls the handle out of the filler valve and yells again. The clerk flips the switch again, and this time the gas comes pouring out of the hose, which is still in the driver's hand. The poor guy panics, and rather than letting go of the lever and stopping the gas he starts trying to put the handle back into the valve with the gas still pouring out. He ended up with gasoline all over his shoes, his pant cuffs and the trunk of his Mercedes.

He didn't think it was funny, so we kindly waited until he was gone to start laughing.

Happy birthday to the lad. Great to see a healthy looking dog at that age. :DL

The picture reminds me of one of the best things the privilege of working with the dogs has taught me: no matter where you go in the world, a dog is a dog. You can travel to all the world's continents, and people and cultures are different from one place to another, but a retriever in Europe is still a retriever in Africa and Asia and speaks the same language as all the dogs in the world. It's beautiful.

Speaking of the four legged, me and my doggie have had lots of fun recently learning a new trick. I have taught him to find paper money by scent, and he is getting very good at it. A small 5€ note hidden inside a book in a bookshelf is no match to his nose. I'm running out of challenging hiding places in my apartment quickly. :)

I hate to spoil your fun with the truth but here it goes: I tried blood earlier and he learned that well enough too, but it was too messy plus I could not hide it anywhere I wanted (like inside a book for obvious reasons). And I could do it only when I happened to have a wound myself. It's not like I poked myself* with a needle everytime I wanted to train my dog, even I'm not that crazy.

In short, I needed something small and easily obtainable with a strong and distinctive scent, and preferably something I could use over and over again. Bills seemed suitable enough, and it's just fun to tell people I have trained my dog to find money.

*)And no, I did not poke anyone else either.

That must be so cool

I might try filming a short video clip of it and uploading it somewhere. No promises, but I'll see if my camera is up to the task.

Does a banknote even have a distinct smell?

Pretty much everything has. The paper, the ink etc., they all form a combination that can be found in pretty much every bill. And apparently it smells different as, say, books or newspapers, as he isn't interested in those while searching.

Or does the dog go for your own smell?

I have considered that possibility and tried to eliminate it. It helps that we are doing this so far only home: everything here smells of me anyway, so he must understand the difference.

Haha, I like that you used freight trucks as recon forces, a tactic that lead to arguments with a friend once with whom I played Sudden Strike. We settled a truce after an hour of vicious fighting, to relax a bit and build up new forces. I stated that for 15 minutes we don't cross a certain line with military forces.
Sadly some civilian trucks crossed the line, were seen and destroyed. This way I could put an arty barrage on the detected enemy AT positions after the truce :arrgh!:

Go back to the doctor and suddenly there's a panic because I shouldn't be sick with this virus at my (almost) 26 and so I go back to get some more tests why my imune system is lousy all of a sudden (the third time I'm sick this month). Aye, I can relate to that. With old dogs worrying about them makes sense, but I occasionally tend to be almost paranoid even with young dogs.
"Are his ears clean?"
"Are his teeth in good condition?"
"Is that red in his eyes? Oh noes, they must be infected!"
"Did he just eat something poisonous from the ground?!"
"Did we wait long enough after exercise before giving food? What if his stomach starts turning around?" (No idea how it's called in English, but you know that lovely condition that kills your dog in front of your eyes in, like, hours tops).

And don't even get me started on how much I worry about the puppies. It's ridiculous, I know, but what can you do? We have a saying, roughly translated: "The knowledge increases the pain": knowing due to work experience all the things that can go wrong with the dogs, I can't really help it.

Aufgesetzter is ethanol or hard liqour, sugar and berries/fruits of your choice - some even use magic mushrooms for it.
