You lucky S.O.B, wish I were there too:)
Drummer Pierre Moerlen's Gong was the later Gong after David Allen's original Gong and played more AOR style music as you know. I like both of them, but the earlier "prog-Gong" is always the one I like most.

Talking about cover songs, this is brilliant, "Should I stay or should I go" (the Clash) covered (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEoxSE7DTAA) in African style by Songhoy Blues, a band from Mali, singing is in their rural dialect which is Songhay.
"Should I stay (in Mail) or should I go (to Europe as a refugee)":arrgh!:
This is the "Stay", by Jackson Brown, we remember here in the USofA.

Chuck Berry - Live 1965

Probably one of the best performances Chuck has ever done. I checked on his website a few months back and it hasn't listed any live dates since sometime in 2014; Chuck is pushing 90 now, so I think his performing days are behind him; still, if he was performing in 2014, he would have then been 87 or 88, not bad for an old geezer...

Slowly approaching the 20 years marker that I now Dido, I still love to listen to her songs three times or more often a week, mostly when working in the kitchen. She is by now probably my most or one of my most listened to musical artists. Her voice just sticks in my mind.
Her beautiful eyes do not hurt either. :)
This song is one of my favourites, and I still get goose pimples when hearing it. Of most fragile beauty.

Same song like above, but live, and VERY intimate. I messed up the links, I wanted to post this version from beginning on. Sorry.
Easy to see that this song has a special meaning to her. And easy to hear that her beautiful voice is not just studio-made, but real. Simply straight natural singing and hitting the right notes - no gimmicks done with the voice. So many overpriced "stars" fail already on this: the very basics.
Beautiful.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7U1HpcrDoOs
I assume the song is about her then just born baby-boy. On the same album is a song where she deals with the death of her father as well. Also beautiful in a way, but very sad. So, nice music, but be warned, if you are not in the right mood, maybe do not listen in.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbEUf1ECtZ8
And another demonstration of how perfectly she can hit the emotionally matching mood over a topic. This one's about war.

Here is a video of a TV show from 1965 originating form Nashville, Tennessee If you want know why white kids were turning off Pat Boone and turning on Soul music back in the 1960s, here is an example of the reason why; the sheer musicianship, technical polish, and performance of the mainly live performances in this video is astonishing for a local program on a small station. Even if you don't watch the whole video, watch at least the first number: there's a left-handed guitar player in the backing band who shows a lot of promise; I wonder what ever became of him?...

Here's one for you Vienna. This is Wes Montgomery who is the father of Octave playing in addition to being a great Jazz guitarist.
Wes Montgomery has long been a favorite of mine. I did, however, dislike how the record companies and producers saddled him with unnecessary lush orchestration on his later, more pop, records; there is a recorded stripped down version, without the stings and other additions, of "A Day In The Life" that I heard decades ago that is nothing less than astonishing; I wish I could find it again...
There was an interview Wes Montgomery did where he was asked how he developed his octave style; his response: "I started doing it because no me told me it was wrong..."...
While looking for the "Night Train" TV footage, I came across a series of gems from a live TV show originating in Texas in the 60s, "The !!! Beat"; it is sort of a Blues/R&B version of "Shindig' or "Hullabaloo". YouTube has quite a few of the videos and the range of talent and stars is more than impressive. Here are two of the shows, one featuring the Texas legend (and one of the "Three Kings" along with B.B. and Albert) Freddie King and the other, Barbara Lynn, a little known, outside of the Blues/R&B world, legend in her own right; she plays guitar, left-handed, in the Texas Blues style; if you look up her other videos, it is well worth the effort...

A couple of oddities...
David Bowie and Cher on Cher's 1975 US TV variety show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOmKLGNEYBw
A medley by Bowie and Cher also from the variety show with a bit of annoying over-orchestration (oddly, there is only sound on the left channel):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPlN8RBP-Ws
In the comments section of one of the videos, someone makes note of Bowie's rather heavy drug use during the period the videos were recorded. Bowie, himself, owned up to the situation; he was living in Los Angeles at the time, and drugs were just everywhere here, as I well remember. A lot of the celebrities were swept up in the drug culture and some, like John Belushi didn't make it out. I saw an interview with Bowie years after he left LA and had cleaned up; the interviewer asked him about the stories of Bowie's drug use and he admitted they were true; the situation had gotten so bad, Bowie was losing friends left and right; finally, Bowie's long-time personal assistant finally had enough and told him she was quitting; when Bowie asked why, she pulled him over to a full length mirror and shoved him in front of it, pointed at Bowie's reflection and said, "That's why". Bowie said he got a good look at himself and realized he was farther gone than he thought; he quickly left LA and, together with Iggy Pop, left for Germany and detox. Ever since the incident with the PA, for the rest of his life, Bowie had a real hatred for LA and avoided, as much as possible, visiting or staying in LA; he once even declared the city should be razed to the ground...

A number from a Los Angeles '60s group way ahead of its time:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9p7S_xIjs4
This song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David; yes the same guys that wrote all those mainstream hits for people like Perry Como. However, Arthur Lee & love's version was really different from the original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1AYxsKOlT4
I always found these two versions interesting; it was common practice in the 50s and 60s to take a rock or R&B song and 'normalize' it to fit Top 40 or TV show audiences; this is why you would find someone like Pat Boone doing covers of Little Richard or Chuck Berry. The covers almost always featured some sort of orchestrated backing and some degree of schmaltz for the Mom & Pop set. This song, however, was the opposite: the schmaltz is on the original and the grit is on the cover. I think I prefer the grit...

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most important inventions in electric guitar history: the invention of the wah-wah pedal. This device has graced the recordings and public performances of guitarists of all genres from rock to funk, surf to country and all others. I still have an original Cry Baby Wah knocking about somewhere in my goods. A local weekly newspaper here in LA (the pedal was created here in Hollywood) ran an article on the inventor of the wah-wah pedal and the device's history:
http://www.laweekly.com/music/50-years-ago-the-wah-wah-pedal-was-born-in-a-hollywood-hills-garage-7767475
It is a bit stunning to find out such a wild musical device was created by the guy who played guitar in Lawrence Welk"s orchestra. (For those of you to young to remember or know, Welk hosted a network TV program for for about two and a half decades that was the epitome of straight, corny music, such as polkas and waltzes; his show basically ended because his audience was literally dying off from old age.) The fact Del Casher also played with Zappa makes him even more amazing. Here are a couple of cuts I feel are prime examples of the wah-wah pedal at its best:

God, I really miss SRV. Not only was he the best guitarist since Hendrix, he was one of the coolest live performers ever; not even a broken string could faze him; watch this little clip whose title says it all:

On vienna's post: I remember watching that unplugged thing SRV did for MTV was it? and that guy had strength in his fingers bending those 0.13 gauge strings on that accoustic with more ease than most would with 0.9 gauge :yeah: Ace guitar picker for sure.
On a totally unrelated note, a bit of sacrilege :har:

Stevie ray was absolutely one of the best. It's hard to believe he will be gone 27 years this Aug 27. he was lost in 1990. This clip you showed was Stevie Ray's last appearance on the program Austin City Limits on Oct 10th, 1989.
Stevie died at the age of 35 and many feel that Stevie hadn't reached his peak as both a song writer and guitar player. Stevie was well known for his fiery guitar playing but stevie's playing also had an incredible melodic element as well as evidenced by this clip. It is also from his last appearance on Austin City Limits.

The previous post about SRV reminded me of the only full project Stevie Ray and his brother Jimmie ever recorded, an album that produced this song:

Here's a great cut by Jack White (and I do believe I'm madly in love with the young lady playing rhythm guitar):

The album you spoke of is Family style featuring brothers Jimmy Lee and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Another song on that album with the brothers features Stevie's signature vocals and guitar playing. It's called the Telephone song.

I don't know if anyone has seen the movies " Eddie and the cruisers " and the sequel, " Eddie Lives. " Michael Pare played the character Eddie. The soundtracks are great, especially from the sequel. John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band provided the actual music. Further, John Cafferty's Saxophone player is Michael "Tunes" Antunes who also played the part of Eddies Saxophone player Wendell Newton in the first movie, so he can really play and wasn't just an actor. Few things are better than a wailing Saxophone. I'm wondering why the music and soundtrack from these movies wasn't promoted better as it has a great vibe to it with an old school feel.
This is Tender Years from the first movie.

Santana is a favorite of mine and I don't really like Latin-ish music all that much; his playing is just a thing of beauty. Back in the summer of 1968, I was walking through the predominantly Latino Mission District on my way downtown and I saw a flyer posted on a phone pole adverting an upcoming block party in the area; a lot of the usual area bands were listed and, bottom of the bill, was Santana, a band I'd never heard of; who knew?...
In 2001, I was working for the County of LA and one of my coworkers was a huge blues fan, one of those chapter and verse types. He and I were a bout a decade or so apart in age, me starting my 50s and him a tad over 60. I'd heard a great new cut on the weekend blues show, so I rushed and bought the CD. It blew me away and I brought in to let my friend have a listen. He played it on his computer during his lunch hour and when he saw me later he said, "I want this CD and I'll pay you right now the price you paid." I told him if he was that impressed he could keep it as a gift. We discussed that CD for a long time afterwards. The CD was by called Sweet Tea by Buddy Guy; one of the most impressive parts is the very beginning, the first two cuts. The first cut, just Buddy and an acoustic guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UjW-Rd2B3o
The second cut? Just Buddy saying "Done got old? Yeah, right!"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hdycEqtpcIY
Electric blues as it should be played. Is it any wonder Hendrix cited Buddy as a major influence?...
