There's a band I've been following for a about a couple of years now, from Germany, called Muddy What?; they are a trio, two men and a woman, and perform live without a bass player, with the band consisting of two guitarists and a drummer; two of the band members share the same last name, but I don't know if they are husband and wife, brother and sister, or whatever, and they both are the band's guitarists, he is a rather good rhythm player and is the band's lead (and seemingly only) vocalist, but I sometimes find his vocals a bit overwrought and grating; It is the other guitarist, Ina Spang, who has caught my attention; she is very tall, gangling and somehow seems out of place as a blues/rock lead guitarist; she tends to stand in one place, sometimes shifting her feet or walking in place with a sublime smile on her face as if she is tapping in to some vast musical source, more than just being 'in the zone'; her playing is highly impressive and shows a command not only of her instrument but, also, of the full spectrum of the instrument's sonic abilities; she is left-handed and plays a sort of "Franken-Strat", a left-handed Stratocaster with a right-handed neck, akin to the mods done by some right-handed players of putting a left-handed neck on a right-handed body in an attempt to get a sort of Jimi sound or tone; Ina is an awesome master of dynamics and tone and has a well-defined sense of taste in her solos, bringing in memories of Jimi, SRV, early J. Beck, and Eddie Hazell, yet making what she plays completely her own, all with a compact, understated ease of technique...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlqmN1xprVM
At the end of the above song, Ina is actually just playing with the feedback from her guitar and, in her earlier solo, she also demonstrated a command of feedback few guitarists can pull off with any degree of control or tatse...

"You call that "wild"...? This is WILD...!..."...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4LnpDj24hI
BTW, the fellow at the end of the clip, wearing the hat and applauding, while also trying to salvage what was left of the sound equipment, is Lou Adler, who is pretty much the Godfather of Los Angeles/Hollywood/So. California Rock & Roll; aside from being the primary organizer of the legendary Monterey Pop Festival, he was also heavily involved in the creation of equally legendary venues in Los Angele, such as The Roxy and the Whisky-A-Go-Go, as well as heading up record labels, producing Grammy winning records, and Executive Producing The Rocky Horror Picture Show...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lou_Adler
The Monterey Pop Festival was founded as a charity event and Adler used proceeds from the Festival to fund and save the struggling Los Angeles Free Clinic, then the only facility available to those who couldn't afford health care...

Has anybody here seen my old friend Abraham?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
You know, I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend John?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked around and he's gone.
Anybody here seen my old friend Martin?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
He freed a lot of people,
But it seems the good they die young.
I just looked 'round and he's gone.
Didn't you love the things that they stood for?
Didn't they try to find some good for you and me?
And we'll be free
Some day soon, and it's a-gonna be one day ...
Anybody here seen my old friend Bobby?
Can you tell me where he's gone?
I thought I saw him walkin' up over the hill,
With Abraham, Martin and John.

Sorry I missed this post, E. The band hadn't yet made any recordings while I was with them. They later released a vinyl LP under their new name of Dakka Dakka Dakka but I was married to the lovely Moira and gone by then.
And no, they weren't the more famous 'Mandrake Root'. I don't know who came first, them or us... I'd have to look that up

Perfect song for Springtime invaders
Masters of Reality...
Another band I had pretty much forgotten, but now, thanks to you, they are brought back to mind; I looked them up to see what ever happened to them and, lo and behold, they are still performing, albeit with a different membership than the original band; one of the lineups did include, briefly, Cream's legendary drummer, the late, great Ginger Baker; that was the lineup that made MoR's biggest impact in the late 80s; nice to know they are still plugging away some 35 years later...
This is the song that broke big in CA, featuring Ginger Baker...

@ Catfish :) Not sure I get your 1937 inference??? Maybe you're "reading" too much into it, maybe not :03:
Without making this an essay...Cold Chisel started in Adelaide in early '70s and evolved through to present day ( different lineups etc ). Nowadays they're an Aussie Pub band ( genre ) with strong Street Cred and Working Class roots.
The Cross was a stomping ground for much musical talent over the years. A very Bohemian district thats unfortunately been exploited by unscrupulous writers and tv/film people to make a fast buck, to the detriment of the poor buggers that live here, all 40,000 of us. Outsiders come here for a night out and treat the place like a theme park for bad behaviour.

Been wanting to note this for a bit, but real life has a bad habit of cutting into my 'me' time...
For a lot of us guitarists who came up as beginners in the 60s, we cut our teeth (and fingers) in learning guitar by trying to replicate guitar solos we heard on radio and records (the younger ones can ask their grandparents) and there really wasn't a whole lot of complexity in playing until the Beatles came along, among others, so we made do with the usual Top 40 offerings, one of which was the legendary song Louie, Louie by the Kingsmen, recorded in 1963; the lead guitar solo launched many a young lad on the road to guitar playing and stands as one of the sloppiest, but most often imitated, guitar solos ever; to be fair, the band didn't know they were being recorded, thinking they were just doing a practice run, and, it is widely rumored were more than a bit intoxicated; since they only had limited funds for their recording session, they opted not to re-record and kept the first take; just this past April 16, 2021, Mike Mitchell, the lead guitarist for the Kingsmen, whose sloppy solo launched thousands, if not millions, of aspiring guitarists, passed away at the age of 77 years...
As one of those teenage kids who labored on a cheap guitar to copy your licks, I want to to thank you, Mike Mitchell, for giving those of us a foot up on lifetimes of musical enjoyment; rest in peace and , again, thank you...

O Fortune,
like the moon
you are changeable,
ever waxing
ever waning;
hateful life
first oppresses
and then soothes
playing with mental clarity;
poverty
and power
it melts them like ice.
Fate – monstrous
and empty,
you whirling wheel,
you are malevolent,
well-being is vain
and always fades to nothing,
shadowed
and veiled
you plague me too;
now through the game
I bring my bare back
to your villainy.
Fate is against me
in health
and virtue,
driven on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.
So at this hour
without delay
pluck the vibrating strings;
since Fate
strikes down the strong,
everyone weep with me!

Some guy, a mediocre guitar player...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iYyBxUislE
3RDEYEGIRL was a side project/band put together by Prince to perform some of his more rock-based compositions rather than the larger, funk-based numbers he was better known for; all the young ladies in the band are highly accomplished musicians with impeccable CVs (the drummer, IIRC, has made a name for herself in Christian music); Prince was well-known for being hyper-critical in the selection of his backing musicians, choosing the best he could find, not just well-known sides, and selecting them based solely on talent and ability, regardless of gender, race, age, or other non-musical criteria; Prince's ear for talent certainly paid off, since he had some of the most tight and talented bands in modern music...

I admit Prince was a great composer and musician, and as i found out an excellent guitar player.
But most of his songs never appealed to me, with this (intended of course) bombast and experimental shrills.
On the other hand we only heard Prince's "Purple Rain" on the radio, daily, everywhere, always. Nothing else from him was played on any radio station but this one, six times a day and on every party. I found the melody being non-existent, and the rest a grunge/high pitch/groove/funk mixture that i personally found boring and cheesy, surely not experimental. Hearing "Purple Rain" today still causes me almost physical pain :03:.
But will listen to some of his music and the above this evening and see whether my taste has improved .. :hmmm:
Taste is, and should be, individual; that's why there are so many flavors of ice cream; the real measure of the greatness of any composer or musician is the extent of the reach of their influence on others in their field; when other artists, in other often vastly different genres or styles, reference and adapt a composer's work into their own as a form of praise in tribute to the composers work, it speaks volumes about just how really influential and important their works really are; when Prince died, I was really surprised at the sheer outpouring of respect and admiration from artists outside of R&B, funk, rock, and pop; country stars, jazz musicians, highly respected classical musicians, musicians from musical styles worldwide, all gave tribute to the memory of Prince; I think part of the underestimation of Prince's influence is due to the ease with which he did so many things musically; musical instruments, musical theory, compositional acumen, was all just a breeze for him and it seems to have undeservedly trivialized his accomplishments; I think other musicians, composers, and arrangers, who actually know the root rigors of such a high level of quality, have a greater appreciation of his work and that is a main reason they were so quick to express their respect and admiration; its kind of like watch one of those cooking or home improvement shows on TV; they make make it look oh, so easy, but once you pick up the pan or hammer and try your own hand, you realize there's a whole lot more to accomplishing a successful outcome...
The Purple Rain point is valid; if all you've ever heard was that one song or some of the other 'radio hits', its easy to be dismissive, but once you delve into the deeper works, the real efforts show through; if all you ever heard was I Want To Hold Your Hand or She loves You, The Beatles are a pretty benign, almost vapid group, but if you delve in and hear A Day In the Life or Tomorrow Never Knows, or Taxman, the realization that something is happening there is immediate; one of the more pleasant parts of my life in my later years have been the occasions when I have been able to steer some younger person who is interested in music towards the lesser known parts of the catalogs of artist they thought were boring or "old"; The Who suddenly become a whole lot more interesting than My Generation after I show them Won't Get Fooled Again or Baba O'Reilly, the Stones are a bit deeper than Satisfaction after being exposed to Gimme Shelter, etc. ...
I'll never forget the time I was conversing with a young guitarist who liked hip-hop, and the like, but shunned the Blues; he is African-American and asked me why the Blues were important; I pointed out how Blues-based modern guitarists like Hendrix, who inspired his generation, got their chops listening to Muddy, The Wolf, Buddy, the Three Kings, Robert Johnson, and all the other greats; I also pointed out all the rock and R&B groups who had recorded hit covers of old Blues songs; I particularly pointed out Willie Dixon, the great Chess Records master who not only wrote hit songs for a wide variety of artists other than himself, he was also a master bass player, arranger, and record producer, and the list of other artists in Rock & Roll who recorded hit versions of his songs was long indeed and covered several decades; the kid was in awe of what Dixon accomplished and, the next time I saw him, he eagerly told me he had gotten Dixon's recordings and was blown away by him and the other musicians he worked with; the kid even said "Man, Willie Dixon invented Rock & Roll!!", to which I said. "Well, not all of it, but he was a big part of the foundation..."...
Regarding your 'bad review' of Prince, you may be in good/bad company as a music critic; witness this review of Beethoven's 9th Symphony by a contemporary music critic.

Odd, everyone remembers Beethoven, but no one really remembers the critic...
Well as you wrote everyone is entitled to his/her/its opinion, in the Harmonicon case people seem to remember those critics well enough. They are of course not as famous as Beethoven, but then even Prince isn't. And brexiters like Farage probably do not like Beethoven for his "Ode to Joy" having become almost the EU hymn, or for other political reasons, but i digress..
Driving home i looked for another Prince song and found.. "Kiss".
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9tEvfIsDyo
So I am a philistine when it comes to Prince's (and other's) music but i really do not see the innovation or sheer grandeur of this pop song. It was one of his greatest hits, i know. But for me it is an almost unvaried beat that goes on without much ideas or change, the vocal input is not enlightenening by voice or content, the guitar.. well, and so on, not so much melody there either. The dry garage sound is funny but not new. I do not hear much deeper thought or whatever going on like with "Strawberry Fields" or even Public enemy's "Fight the Power".
Yes there are other songs by him, will listen a bit..

Stevie Nicks wrote the above song, but she contacted prince who, in short order arranged, performed all the keyboards, sequencing, and other instrumentation, and produced her song:
Technically, the raspy 1983 Wild Heart dance track "Stand Back," was written by Nicks herself – but Nicks has said it "belongs" to Prince. She likes to tell its origin story: It was the day of her wedding, she and her new husband Kim Anderson were driving North to Santa Barbara for their honeymoon when she heard "Little Red Corvette" for the first time. She wrote "Stand Back" start to finish that day, humming along to the Prince single. When she later went to record the song, she called to tell him the story. Twenty minutes later the Purple One showed up at her studio. He "walked over to the synthesizers that were set up, was absolutely brilliant for about 25 minutes and then left," she later told Timothy White. "He spoiled me for every band I've ever had because nobody can exactly recreate – not even with two piano players – what Prince did all by his little self."
In might be interesting to know, on Prince's first few albums, he not only wrote all the songs, he played all the instruments, performed all the vocals, and produced the albums himself; there used to be a very famous recording studio here in Hollywood, Gold Star Studios, known for being the site of a great, great many hits over the decades, including the Phil Spector "wall Of Sound" recording sessions for various artists (the Gold Star echo chamber, arguably the best in the industry, contributed greatly to Spector's sound); Prince, whenever he was in LA, would often book the studios for entire overnight blocks of time; Gold Star was a family owned and run business and the owner's wife would serve, at Prince's request, as the sole engineer in the studio when he was recording; she has said in interviews Prince would show up, alone, go into the studio where the instruments were set up and start to play on an instrument, while she turned on the tape machines, stop, listen to a playback, go to another instrument, record an overdub, and so on, building up a song or song idea as he went; she said the only thing she had to do was make sure there was enough tape available and run the machinery; once Prince was done with his session, he would take the tapes and be gone...

Years ago, ZZ top was in town and performing a show one night. Billy Gibbons, Guitarist and vocalist for the band was unwinding after the show at a little " out of the way " bar. The waiter tapped Billy on his shoulder and said a gentleman would like you to join him at his table. The gentleman was none other than Prince. Billy accepted and they talked for hours about music and such.
Billy was supposed to leave and instead stayed a day or two as they just jammed together at Prince's studio. Billy had asked Prince how he did a certain guitar Riff and Prince replied he didn't know how he did it as he said he was in the moment and just played. Billy would later say that Prince was just that.
Prince helped produce a number of records from such diverse artists such as Country music singer Lee All Rimes to Sheila E and also helped create the musical group, the Bangles with Suzanna Hoffs.
Prince joining an all star cast and doing a great guitar solo starting at 3:28 and on an old Telecastor on top of it. This is a great rendition of " While my guitar gently weeps. " by George Harrison. Also in the group is Dani Harrison, son of the late George Harrison.

This is a track from the score for "Cinderella Liberty", a bitter sweet movie, and so is the music. Really touches the bototm of my heart. This is Anne Sophie Mutter and Joh Williams and the Boston Pops. I heard this first by the two but with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, an even better performance that was.

Reminds me of Friday night Coconut Grove mid 80's a few blocks from the old Monty Trainer. Saw this beautiful high class goddess of a woman wearing a flowing dress and sporting a load of diamond jewelry walking her pet cougar along the sidewalk. Crazy good times back then.

Originally written and performed by Bonnie Dobson in the early 1960's, Morning Dew is one of the less understood
songs in the Grateful Dead's catalogue. M.D. tells the story of a woman who is the last, or one of the last, survivors
of a nuclear holocaust. She thinks she hears people outside her shelter but someone else (or maybe just a voice in her head)
reminds her that no one else is left. So, hippies walking in a field-this ain't. :k_confused:

Note should be taken about this song: The average mean temperature in San Francisco is about 65-70 degrees F (18-21 C) and that is the mean daytime temp, so SF nights are rather a bit nippy; Mark Twain once stated the coldest winter he ever spent was a summer's day in San Francisco...
