"Fun, Fun, Fun" - The Beach Boys.

Interesting you should pair those two videos: a lot of people aren't aware, in the early days of both act's careers, Jan & Dean sang backup vocals on Beach Boy recordings and vice versa; also, on both act's early recordings, the musicians were not the stars themselves, but, rather, the legendary studio musicians, The Wrecking Crew, which featured some of the best players in LA, including such later stars as Glen Campbell...

The Blendells - La La La La La

The Bombshells - Treat Her Right

The Painted Ship - And She Said Yes

Some good cuts, there!

I'd heard the Bombshells before; they have a sort of cult following here in LA...

The Blendells are a sort of legend in the Chicano (Mexican-American) Los Angeles community; along with Thee Midnighters, they were sort of rock/soul/r&b pioneers from East LA; when I first came to LA, there were a couple of radio stations that sort of catered to the Chicano kids who were not into the mainstream Latino music and preferred a blend of US/UK rock, mainly oldies, and soul/R&B hits with a sprinkling of homegrown Chicano musical groups. One of the stations, KRLA, had a nightly dedication program where the kids (and some adults) would request songs to be dedicated to someone close to them; it would often go something like "This next song, Earth Angel, goes out to Chuy's best chica Rosario; por vida, Rosario...". Sometimes they would let the person calling in the request make their dedication on air, which often tended to sound a bit like Cheech Marin doing a routine. I used to listen to some of those programs, mainly for the music, but was also fascinated by the varied dedications...

A while back, there were posts about The Velvet Underground; part of the VU/Warhol scene was a young woman who was sort of the muse for the Factory's artists, Edie Sedgwick. Born into wealth, she preferred to hang out with the Greenwich Village Crowd and she was the embodiment of the description "silver spoon and a paper plate". She was very beautiful and modeled for fashion magazines and was featured in many of Warhol's films. She had a very traumatic childhood and suffered from deep psychological problems; she had a very tortured life of tragedies and died, from barbiturate poisoning in 1971, at age 28...

Tragic indeed. Her father made the Great Santini look like a model father; she also lived in the era just before significant stride were made in the field of metal health; if she had been born a few years later, her life may have turned out differently. If you want to get an idea of her life, there was a pretty good film made of her titled Factory Girl, starring Sienna Miller; it can be a bit of a downer, but it offers a good look at her experiences and the times around her...

I finally got around to seeing the film Not Fade Away about a kid in the 60s who is a huge Stones fan and starts his own rock group. (Yeah, I know, the film came out in 2012, but, hey, I'm a busy guy... :03:) The film is sort of the other side of the coin of films like That Thing You Do!, and is a lot closer to what a goodly number of wannabe rocker in the 60s went through trying to make a mark. At the beginning of the film, there is a recreation of the coincidental meeting of the young Jagger and Richards on a city bus where Richards is impressed by Jagger's recently purchased collection of US Blues and R&B records and the seeds of the Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World were sown. The film then cuts to a scene of the protagonist watching the Stones on the Ed Sullivan show, under the disapproving and mocking gaze of his father, and getting some ideas of his own. I think a lot of us who were around at the time had a strong empathy for the kid...

The Stones first US TV appearance:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTHweQtZJ7w

A funny clip of The Stones performing an Arthur Alexander song; look for Mick's reaction at catching the TV camera's long closeup of an oblivious Keith:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EILVwE4PCyE

This clip is the performance of The Stones at the 1964 TAMI show filmed in Santa Monica, California; it gives a sample of how The Stones were noticeably different from the other UK Invasion bands; in the first shot of the audience, there's a funny shot a rather square looking college type guy looking more than a little befuddled and/or miffed at his girlfriend's obvious enthrallment with the band; sorry, Brad, Janet's not doing the Madison anymore...:

I remember it too. It's hard to forget those flying LP's.

It's from a 1957 "Disneyland" episode - "Mars and Beyond".

A couple of NASA scientists ( as I remember it - Werner von Braun and Dr Oberth? ) had a great idea for an expedition to Mars. They had it all worked out and it seemed perfectly feasible. Walt Disney made the great film clip and all us youngsters were like "Wow, I wanna be on it".

Penetration was written by Steve Leonard, the bass player of The Pyramids and released in 1961; The Ventures didn't release their version until 1964 on one of their albums and later they re-released the number as the B-side of their 1966 single Wild Thing. The Pyramids' Penetration was the first hit instrumental surf recording in the US...

The photo of The Pyramids reminded me of their appearance in one of those Frankie & Annette beach movies; IIRC, the film also had a performance by a newcomer in music at the time, some fellow named Little Stevie Wonder...

As a BTW, if any of you who are into surf music and also play guitar, there is a YT channel by a great guitarist, Bruce Lindquist, wherein he has tutorials on all kinds of vintage oldie guitar-based songs and instrumentals, including movie and TV themes; his main specialty, and seemingly his most requested genre, is surf guitar; his lessons are easy to understand and follow; I started following his YT posts after I stumbled across his channel while looking for videos on some old songs a while back; it was rather enlightening: I play by ear and have had to work out guitar parts on my own since my teen years (yes, we did have guitars [and electricity] when I was a lad) and I found I was either spot on or very close to finding the right technique; on some I was wildly off or was using a more awkward method, but I am able to play Honky Tonk Women in standard tuning and make it sound like Keith Richards even though he played it in Open-G tuning; his method is easier, but, after all the work I put into getting that sound in standard tuning, I'm sticking with my version...

Lindquist has just recently posted his tutorials on the Penetration guitar parts...

Well, considering The Beatles released Paperback Writer in 1966 and Gene Clark released his song in 1967, it seems to be the other way around; you can also hear hints of The Beatle's Taxman and Rain in the song, which is not unusual since Clark, also a founding member of The Byrds, was a pert of the whole LA 60s music scene and an awful lot of the songwriters there at the time nicked freely from The Beatles and other British Invasion performers. Clark was a very good songwriter and is often overlooked by the general public; in fact, a lot of people mistakenly think many of Clark's compositions as a member of The Byrds were written by Roger MCGuinn. Here are two Gene Clark songs illustrating his songwriting skills as a member of The Byrds:

Speaking of The Beatles and The Byrds, George Harrison was a huge fan of The Byrds and wrote a great song as a tribute to The Byrds, If I Needed Someone; George actually sent an advance tape copy of the song to The Byrds; McGuinn and a couple of other band members have said in interviews how they, themselves, were honored by Georges gesture and how they were equally, if not more, fans of George and The Beatles (Note: this is a live recording by George; The Beatles official videos are very hard to find on YT):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yne7OCeNR8s

An oddity I came across while trying to find a good video of George's song - The Kingsmen (yes, the Louie, Louie guys) covering Harrison's song and sounding very Byrds-like:

Well, considering The Beatles released Paperback Writer in 1966 and Gene Clark released his song in 1967, it seems to be the other way around; you can also hear hints of The Beatle's Taxman and Rain in the song, which is not unusual since Clark, also a founding member of The Byrds, was a pert of the whole LA 60s music scene and an awful lot of the songwriters there at the time nicked freely from The Beatles and other British Invasion performers.
<O>

Clark didn't like much about that particular song and he dropped it off from the re-release of the "Echoes" album. Maybe he felt guilty?:hmmm:

https://www.allmusic.com/song/elevator-operator-mt0031968094

..Anyways. As you stated, there always seem to be use for nice riffs, regardless of who made them.:)

This may or may not be of interest; a little way in Andy (DJ on a Hastings Radio station) mentions having been in a band entered in the Melody Maker Rock/Folk Contest. Well I was in the band with him at that time (when the competition was held at Sussex University). He was, as I've mentioned before, our drummer and now a 'renewed' old friendship thanks to Facebook:

^ This sure was interesting, fumo... I'm surprised I never heard of this band. I read eagerly about them in this Wiki entry because it seemed so possible that I might have once known some of the names, maybe just in passing, or perhaps even personally.... but I didn't. I'll have to ask my friend Andy Gunton, who is far more likely to have done so.

I love Rob Chambers' artwork and wonder if it might have influenced or even been influenced by that of an old friend of mine (now also passed away) who had his own disco, which he named "The Electro-Gnome Disco"

Dame Vera Lynn, DBE (born Vera Margaret Welch on 20 March 1917) is an English singer and actress whose musical recordings and performances were enormously popular during World War II. During the war she toured Egypt, India and Burma, giving outdoor concerts for the troops. She was called "The Forces' Sweetheart"; the songs most associated with her are "We'll Meet Again" and "The White Cliffs of Dover". She remained popular after the war, appearing on radio and television in the UK and the United States and recording such hits as "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" and "My Son, My Son". In 2009 she became the oldest living artist to make it to No. 1 on the British album chart, at the age of 92. She has devoted much time and energy to charity work connected with ex-servicemen, disabled children and breast cancer. She is still held in great affection by veterans of the Second World War and in 2000 was named the Briton who best exemplified the spirit of the twentieth century.

There was no video for this Jim. It was from the Movie Soundtrack " Eddie and the cruisers, Part 2, Eddie lives. The music for that was written, played and provided by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band. I chose this because the Audio Component was of an excellent quality and gives the listener a good idea how the song was engineered on the album. John has been around a long time and heavily influenced another " Jersey Boy ", Bruce Springsteen. John Cafferty captures and defines the quintessential " Jersey Sound " so well.
"

I did find John Cafferty performing the song live although the audio quality is of poor quality. I hope you Enjoy it Jim.

The conversation with JimBuna yesterday got me thinking about artists that encapsulate that " Old School " feel. Years ago, a guitar teacher told me, " If you want to play well, look to the originators, not the Imitators for inspiration . " For my money, those names would be John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown band, Bob Segar, John Mellencamp and a very under rated Bryan Adams. Bryan Adams can switch from soulful ballads to " balls to the wall " straight up Rock and Roll. Jim Croce can be added to that list too. I'm sure others can add more names as well.

Another would be Van Morrison. Anyone remember this gem of a classic ?

Found the lyrics ... I like the beat Reggae remix

Just an Illusion

I've been told 'bout living like a star
Hotel Ritz, champaign and caviar
But no one ever showed me the reverse
And that really hurts
Babe, it really hurts

They try to sell your body and your soul
(babe, want you, my love, babe, want you)
It's the price you pay for rock 'n roll
(babe, want you, my love, babe, want you)
And no one understands it how you feel
For it's so unreal
Oh, it's so unreal

Baby don't you cry for me
It's an illusion, just an illusion
I thought I knew what life should be
It's an illusion
Just an illusion

When critics crucify your latest show
(babe, want you, my love, babe, want you)
Another drink and then you lose control
(babe, want you, my love, babe, want you)
But then on stage I feel a fire burn
There is no return
I'm always on the run

I give it to you babe with all my heart
(babe, want you, my love, babe, want you)
For it's not too late
Baby it's not too late

Baby don't you cry for me
It's an illusion, just an illusion
I thought I knew what life should be
It's an illusion
Just an illusion

Baby don't you cry for me

Since I met you Baby

too bad we can't have a poll within a thread

What do y'all think are these songs (y'alls too) better from the original song artist and or writer that made them famous are they better in the hands of men and women that recreate that special magic moment singing the same tunes?

"Since I Met You Baby" is an American rhythm and blues song written and recorded by pianist Ivory Joe Hunter. The song, which Hunter recorded in 1956, saw renewed interest popularity in 1969 when country music artist Sonny James released his hit version.
