A couple of lackluster brother acts...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=muKkVufgkAE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbUrsot6oeY
It should be noted both the above performances were live; the level of instrumental mastery of both clips is impressive, given the times they were recorded, in 1959 and 1941, respectively...
When I was a child, I used to see the Marx Bros. films on TV and was blown away with the musical skills of Chico and Harpo. In later years and with later viewings, I began to wonder if, maybe, some later pianists, like Jerry Lee or Victor Borge might not have also seen the Marx's films and taken a few ideas from Chico...

The Rolling Stones - The Under Assistant West Coast Promo Man
...
Great pick! That song was written by Jagger/Richards after they had come to Hollywood early on to record at the famed RCA Recording Studios (legend has it Elvis would record there, but, in truth, he did almost all of his recordings at a much smaller site, a place called Radio Recorders, about a mile and half from the main RCA Studios); they were so put off by, and amused, by the officiousness and puffery of the "suits" at RCA, they wrote that little ditty as a bit of a jab...

That's Devo and Booji Boi ..and Neil. :o
Neil was working on a "birthday project" movie called Human Highway and Devo were on a west coast tour when they met. I'm pretty sure Neil did the video for Devo's "Come back, Johnny" (the cowboys in a bowling alley) at the same time.
If you can find Human Highway, check it out. Neil was experimenting with live action filmed on overly-colorful sets and in many ways Human Highway is years ahead of its time.
And yes, once you see Human Highway you'll think of Pee Wee's Playhouse.
Paul Rubens was friends with Mark Mothersbaugh and its no coincidence the sets looked like they did.

Regarding Devo, in general, and Mark Mothersbaugh, in particular; after Devo pretty much disintegrated in the early 90s, Mark Mothersbaugh and a couple of other band mates formed a multimedia production company in Hollywood and Mark has made quite a reputation for himself and his company in the fields of film/tv music, art design, graphics, and media production, to name a few of their successes. The company is housed in a unique circular building that has long been a landmark on the Sunset Strip ;
https://www.wehoville.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/IMG_5544.jpg
The building was once painted white, but Mark had it painted green when he moved in; the building has an interesting back story:

https://www.wehoville.com/2013/03/07/sunsets-green-forum-a-master-architects-design-for-a-surgeon-to-the-stars/
Some of the other former Devo members have in the past or still have set up other design/production ventures of their own in Hollywood. To think this all started out as a performance art piece by a bunch of art students from Kent State in Ohio...
This is one of my favorite Devo live performances:

...
Nah, the Source Family was way too hippy-dippy for my tastes; like a lot of the other cults (The Family, Tony & Susan Alamo, etc.), they were always trying to recruit on the streets of Hollywood, but I just ignored them; never was one for joining up and giving in to any group or belief. Back in the 60s and 70s, there were tons of various cults, factions, and contingents all up and down Hollywood Blvd. and the Sunset Strip trying to con us youngsters into following whatever "one true way" they were peddling; oddly, when I was in San Francisco, where you would presume such proselytizing would be rampant, there was not the hard sell found in LA, nor the feverish pitches used by the LA cults...
The Source Family actually owned a health food restaurant on the Sunset Strip that catered to the stars and celebrities; never went there, myself; not interested in their scene and I was more likely to be up around The Whisky. I had heard of the group you posted, but had never heard any of their music; by that sample, I really didn't miss much at all... :haha:
Now, to more interesting matters: I was thinking about one of my ex's today and I was remembering how we would often argue with each other and often she would just turn and walk away; the arguments were regrettable, but, I must say, the view of her storming away was highly memorable...

These ladies don't have guitars and don't really need them. I've been meaning to post this for a while, ever since I heard earlier this year about the passing of Maggie Roche, who died in January of 2017. I hadn't been aware of the news until I received an email from a local guitar store/performance venue, McCabe's, announcing a sort of tribute to The Roche's and Maggie in particular. The Roches are a trio of sisters who gained first notice as backing singers for various acts, most notably Paul Simon, in the early-mid 70s. They were signed to a contract and had their first album produced by Robert Fripp of King Crimson and Bowie fame. The Roches had a fairly long career, earning critical praise, admiration of peers, and a strong fan following for their beautiful and often humorous performances. They are best known by most for their performance of a classical music composition, sung impressively, and majestically, acapella; and, you know, you don't really miss the orchestra...:

^Schönes Lied.
Yes, but find it hard to listen to. A bit unusual for german ears, even if she sings it in german. Very pronounced, it sounds as if she throttles down some underlying energy with all her might. She sure is singing about herself/her life.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nico
Her real name being Christa Paeffgen, born in Cologne, father owning a brewery that is still active today (http://www.paeffgen-koelsch.de). Fleeing Cologne from allied bombardments, father dying in psychatry or in a concentration camp(?) due to wounds and/or shell shock suffered as a soldier. Raped with 15 years. I read somewhere else that she was later treated with a kind of electric shock therapy. A friend of Jim Morrison of The Doors' fame. A son with Alain Delon. Drugs. Heroine addict. Racist. Sounds all "interesting" but sure not a easy or comfortable life.
These are some pretty damn amazing vocals from Floor Jansen

A very interesting and compelling documentary/biography of Nico is in the link below; it is titled Nico/Icon and I heard about it years ago and was lucky enough to find a DVD copy about 20 or so years ago in a video rental store (remember them?) bargain bin; as far as I know, the DVD is out of print, so this posting on YT maybe the only available source for free; I still have the DVD and about once or twice a year I'll find it while browsing through my collection and I always play it and I'm always impressed by the depth of presentation of Nico's troubled life. The film is well worth the time to view:

Big thanks to you, fumo30! I knew about Barbara Lynn as a singer and songwriter [The Rolling Stones covered her hit Oh! Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin') on one of their early 1965 albums], but I wasn't aware she was a guitarist, much less such a good guitarist, so thanks for the new view; also thanks for that specific clip because it led me to a channel where complete episodes of the TV show your clip came from, The!!!! Beat, can be viewed; there are some impressive acts performing on the shows; such local shows back in the day were some of the only places to see some of the great Blues, Soul, and R&B artists of the 50s - 70s. Again, many thanks...
Seeing Barbara Lynn playing guitar reminded me of another Blues guitarist who passed away this past October at the age of 80, Unless you are or were a close follower of the blues, you might not have heard of her or her trailblazing and influence on other female Blues artists, and not a few male artists, also. Beverly "Guitar' Watkins was a respected guitarist who started out working with Piano Red aka Dr. Feelgood, and later went on to play with many stars, including names like James Brown and Ray Charles. Being part of the bands for the headliners meant that, outside of those who paid attention to the side players, the general public rarely heard of her. She didn't start to get notice for her skills and musical importance until very late in her life, but she was more than up to the task of taking center stage even in her senior years...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny_073NOlKc
...and here she is being herself...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDPJzhohx9Y
To Beverly: though you weren't well-known to many, to the many who did know of you, you were an awesome example of the human spirit and the power of music. Thank you for sharing your gifts and your time here on earth. I hope they gave you a guitar instead of a harp to play when you received your final reward...
RIP, Miss Beverly...

You are a true gentleman vienna and modest too, but actually its you who earns the thanks (once again):salute: Sometime after I posted that clip, I thought that vienna most likely is aware of her, and after a quick search I wasn't surprised to find this post from dec 2016. For some reason I myself missed that post at that time.
Wes Montgomery has long been a favorite of mine. I did, however, dislike how the record companies and producers saddled him with unnecessary lush orchestration on his later, more pop, records; there is a recorded stripped down version, without the stings and other additions, of "A Day In The Life" that I heard decades ago that is nothing less than astonishing; I wish I could find it again...
There was an interview Wes Montgomery did where he was asked how he developed his octave style; his response: "I started doing it because no me told me it was wrong..."...
While looking for the "Night Train" TV footage, I came across a series of gems from a live TV show originating in Texas in the 60s, "The !!! Beat"; it is sort of a Blues/R&B version of "Shindig' or "Hullabaloo". YouTube has quite a few of the videos and the range of talent and stars is more than impressive. Here are two of the shows, one featuring the Texas legend (and one of the "Three Kings" along with B.B. and Albert) Freddie King and the other, Barbara Lynn, a little known, outside of the Blues/R&B world, legend in her own right; she plays guitar, left-handed, in the Texas Blues style; if you look up her other videos, it is well worth the effort...

The !!!! Beat (TV Program) Vol 2 # Show 7 - Duration: 24:49. Rachel Cummings 24,459 views (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LQDXb3axJ4)
<O>
About Barbara. She really is something.:yep: She has a fancy guitar playing style that immediately caught my attention, she's playin with such an ease. Not to mention her undisputable skils.
About Beverly Watkins. She is completely new name to me,. Thanks for sharing info about her. She is worth of being aware, very talented and sympathetic lady.
"To Beverly: though you weren't well-known to many, to the many who did know of you, you were an awesome example of the human spirit and the power of music. Thank you for sharing your gifts and your time here on earth. I hope they gave you a guitar instead of a harp to play when you received your final reward...
RIP, Miss Beverly..."
Fine words, I couldn't say it any better.

...
How dare you call me a gentleman!?! Do I go around calling you names ?...
...and I'd tell you just how marvelously modest and humble I am, but, you know... modest and humble,,, :haha:
There was nothing gentlemanly or modest about my post; it was just pure forgetfulness. I was a bit stunned by your pointing out my prior post because I had completely forgotten about the particulars and also because it reinforced something about which I have been concerned for a bit of time. I have noted a seeming loss of memory over the past two or so years and it has apparently become more noticeable in recent months. I had tried pointing the issue out to my doctors but they just passed the matter off as just a by-product of aging (my most recent visit, two days after my 69th birthday was highlighted by a doctor half my age saying "Well, your getting up there,eh?"); the problem is, I have been known for having a very strong memory and now I find myself losing track of daily matters and more recent memories. I tried volunteering for an Alzheimer's national study being conducted by a local university's medical center; my mother had died of complications of Alzheimer's and I thought, if I am losing memory, possibly due to the disorder, I might as well try to offer my participation in order to make some sort of contribution to research; even though I met all the requisites for participation, I was turned down because the study requires any participant to have a 'study partner', someone, a family member or close friend, who is in regular observational contact with the participant and can document the participant's progress or decay; since I have no one who is in anywhere near regular contact with me (I have become a bit of a recluse since ailments have occurred in recent years), I am not eligible for the study. On my most recent visit to my doctors, they have now become concerned, also, and are starting to take my concerns seriously; I am now scheduled to start my New Year's 2020 with a cranial MRI to be conducted tomorrow, 2 Jan. My big fear now is they'll do the scan and find my skull is empty...
So, again many thanks to you, fumo30; your pointing out of my prior post has given me one more significant bit of evidence I can wave in front of my doctors' noses... :salute:
While looking through the YT listings, I came across a rather sad discovery. Kim Shattuck, a singer/songwriter/guitarist, who was based here in the Los Angeles area, passed away this past October after battling ALS for the last two years at the age of 56 years old. She was best known for being the frontwoman/guitarist for her band, The Muffs, and for her participation in bands like The Pandoras and The Pixies. She toured around the world and was very highly regarded by fellow musicians and songwriters. She was described as a 'force of nature', who had probably the best rock & roll scream in the business and a growling vocal style that reminded me of Crrissy Amphlett of the Divinyls, with the same raw force and energy. She apparently kept her condition a secret for the past couple of years and her passing, and the cause, came as a surprise to many who knew her personally, and to many of her fans...

I'd seen Kim play live with both The Muffs and The Pandoras and it is a bit of a shock to realize that strong, vibrant, energetic person is no more; it just doesn't seem possible or fair...
RIP, Kim, you will be sorely missed and well remembered by those who knew and saw you...
