From Daryl's House. Daryl Hall and Billy Gibbons of ZZ top fame. The song is a little slower than the original recording by Daryl Hall and in my opinion, sounds better.

My favorite FZ touring band. :yep:
You've got some King Crimson and half of what would become Missing Persons (Bozzio and O'Hearn although Dale was also backstage).

BTW, consider that Keith Moon was supposed to be the inspiration for Animal from the Muppet Show. My contention is that Terry Bozzio is the actual spirit of Animal. Dig around on YT and search for Zappa and Halloween and you'll find other clips of this concert. You'll see what I mean, Terry literally attacks his drum kit in the middle of playing of some songs. :yeah:

BTW2, the guy at the end of clip is one of the Estrada bros. from the original Mothers.

What I wouldn't give for Frank Zappa to be alive today. Though they should be, they're probably not safe for work.

Frank would probably be the US ambassador to the Czech Republic. :o

No kidding, on one of his last European tours Frank met Václav Havel and they became friends. Havel basically named Frank as a go between for Czech and US trade deals.

I'm NOT kidding, this really happened. :yep:

Frank was good for his word and tried to promote Czech imports to the US. The state dept. went ape and basically said, "No, no, no.. Anyone but him!" :o

back in the dark days of World War II my mum said life was hard with food rationing but when America came into the war
and the liberty ships rolled off the slipways and shipped spam m powdered eggs to blightlyville that you could get off ration
helped a lot
On the hearing the news of the Pearl Harbour December 7th Attack later that evening Winston Churchill slept the sleep of the saved

Several posts ago, a cover of a song by Lara Nyro was presented and I added a post od songs by Janis Ian; both women are great songwriters who influenced a far greater circle of other songwriters/musicians than their own personal amount of fame would give you to believe. I'd like to add another pair of name to the list...

Tim Hardin was a great songwriter of the 60s-80s who is best known for this song covered by several artists and making the charts several times; I first heard it recorded by Bobby Darin and, later, heard it many times when my sister, who was a big fan of the original Star Trek, got an album of Leonard Nimoy singing and this was one of the songs:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2RrRajjlo6M

...and if you are a Rod Stewart fan, you might have heard this song by Tim:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bW6VZi0ICs

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Hardin

The Other songwriter is Fred Neil, who I became aware of when I first heard the Jefferson Airplane do a cover of this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcmLpHykVKE

Fred was rather a reclusive loner, wasn't really big on touring and performing publicly, and did not really get the attention he deserved outside of the songwriter/musician's circle, but his songs have been covered by some of the most famous recording artists and his songwriting has inspired other more well-known writers like Joni Mitchell, Gram Parsons, and, yes, Tim Hardin. Neil is probably best known for this song he wrote, here sung by Fred, which has become a standard for many artists:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBAOjKBLpqo

I just want to throw in this version of Hardin's If I Were A Carpenter because if there were ever two people who could do the song justice, it most probably be this couple:

This is my favorite version of Little Wing, aside from the Hendrix original; the band is Concrete Blonde, an LA trio, and the guitarist is well known here in local musical circles and highly respected; he was the bass player for Sparks' first two albums. His playing here is virtually identical to the way he plays Little Wing live and he is able to reproduce live all of the amazing guitar sounds he put down on the studio version; Mankey is truly an overlooked guitarist:

I had never heard this Vienna. Thanks for the posting. Little Wing is such a classic song covered by so many artists and it's always great to see various artists interpretation of this jewel. I always liked these as well.

Stevie had such a powerful interpretation of this song. Stevie decided the song was so great, it didn't need vocals.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=An4uDegHB8s

Sting also did a great Jazz interpretation of this song with the incomprable Hiram Bullock on lead guitar and Branford Marsalis on sax. This arrangement and composition is an absolute masterpiece. I'm not sure who the bassist is but whoever it is, the bassist does a nice job of inter weaving the bass work with the drummer. Sadly, Hiram Bullock has passed. Stevie Ray Vaughan himself was a big fan of Hiram Bullock's work as well.

Fascinating song:yeah:

Listening it again and again.

It is a weird composition, a favorite of mine (I also have a tendency to give it repeated listenings) since it first came out in 1969; it was released as a single in a much truncated version, but the best studio version is the album cut on VU's third album. There are a lot of live recordings of the song, both official and as bootlegs, and they are all fascinating. Lou Reed was a genius songwriter and some of his odd rhythmic approaches are masterful. A lot of guitar players have tried to get the proper feel of the guitar parts, but mastering the actual rhythmic feel is like trying to get the "Bo Diddley" guitar strums down exactly right; you can get close but it takes a bit of real practice to really make it work and sound right...

Interesting fact: Before forming the VU, Lou Reed worked as a house songwriter for a knock-off record label specializing in releasing scam albums that featured sound-alike songs mimicking top recording artists; it is also rumored he also played anonymously on some of the labels releases that feature "The Top Hits by The Original Artists", compilations of songs made famous by chart-toppers; the hits were legit but the band(s) playing the music did so under the band name "The Original Artists"...

Here is a clip of Brian Ferry's version of What Goes On; he includes a couple of lines form another VU song in his version:

Quite true; I posted the Ferry version as sort of a contrast...

This song is a bit on the dark side, but very interesting in how the VU were able to weave the instruments and Reed's vocal into a whole:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwzaifhSw2c

BTW, the film clips in the VU clips posted are from movies Andy Warhol shot as part of his arts collective known as The Factory and several of the more well known Factory members can been seen in the clips; I also want to point out the drummer with the short hair, shades, and striped shirt is Moe (Maureen) Tucker who was notable not only for being the VU's drummer, but, also, for the fact she played drums standing up...

The VU were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996, and the three surviving members, Lou Reed, John Cale, and Moe Tucker accepted the award and performed; Sterling Morrison, an extremely talented guitarist had passed away a year earlier; it is Sterling who can be heard playing among the multi-tracked guitars, including the solo, on What Goes On. The The three band members performed together for what would be the last time at the awards ceremony and, instead of just playing one of their old hits, they collaborated to write a song in honor of their departed bandmate:

Something perhaps a little different for Eichhörnchen (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/member.php?find=lastposter&t=239995)and others here that love classical music. This piece performed by Andre Rieu and the Johann Strauss Orchestra (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Strauss_Orchestra)

This piece Features Manoe Konings on the bagpipes. Manoe is a gifted musician who also plays Clarinet, Guitar, Saxophone and sings and dances. Manoe is a true entertainer. Manoe is a bit unconventional and fun loving as she can be seen zipping through her hometown on her motorcycle in a leather jacket when not playing in her Orchestra. Truly, someone after my own heart.

This piece is called Vrijth and was performed in Maastricht in the Netherlands.

Moe Tucker - Around and Around

Interesting to hear a very different take on a Chuck Berry classic...

As fr a I know, Moe only took a lead vocal once with the VU; Lou Reed had to coax her to sing lead on this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b14gxfjriu4

The clip is from a 1993 performance in Paris; the VU were to be honored at a festival for their contributions to music and they were only supposed to appear to receive an award; the band members had not performed together for many years, primarily due to strong acrimony between Reed and Cage; When they finally got together in Paris, they began to talk among themselves and realized they were not getting any younger and they might never be able to play together again as a group; much to the delight of the festival organizers, the VU asked if they could be allowed to perform once more, for probably the last time; there were hurried rehearsals and preparations and, for that night, the VU played as a united group...

...

Talkin' about female drummers the first I can recall is Sheila E and her "Glamorous life" video from 80's. She also performed with Prince (You know her) and occasionally played standing up too.

Sheila E. gets her talents from a strong family tree. Her uncle is Coke Escovedo, percussionist in the band Santana; also in Santana as a percussionist is Sheila's father, the great Pete Escovedo:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fibMiXZGNYk

This clip is Pete with his orchestra (with many of his own family and relatives playing):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX8YhUjPgDc

I did a bit of checking on the Escovedo Brothers because my memory is not too good and I wasn't entirely sure if Sheile E. was Pete or Ckoe's daughter; in my search, I made a surprising discovery: there used to be a Punk band from San Diego CA called The Zeros; they were one of the very first punk bands in SoCal. Somehow, I got to know the band members through some of the other musicians and scenesters in the Punk circle; the bass player was a young kid named Hector and he and I would talk and drink together when we happened to run into each other; he either was about to or had just recently graduated high school and he was concerned about his future, specifically because he had a longtime girl friend and he was thinking they might get married one day; his concern was he felt being a musician was all fine and good, but, if he were going to make a life for him and his girl, he wanted to have a steady, fall-back occupation in case music didn't pan out as a lifelong career; he was kind of serious and bookish looking, and he knew I had worked in accounting and data processing, so he would ask me about the fields and if I thought he would fit in and be able to grow in the fields; I was impressed how someone so young was so well-anchored and considered. I didn't get to know his band mates well (one of them seemed to have a bit of a grudge against me), so I never really knew much about them. In my recent research, I found out one of the Zeros, Javier, is a younger brother of both Pete and Coke Escovedo; it just goes to show how small the world of musicians can be...

The last time I saw Hector, the band was going to play a gig at a massive venue, the old Elks Lodge near Downtown LA. the band was a headliner act and didn't need to go on until very late in the night. Hector had come to the Lodge very early with his girlfriend and we ran into each other; his girl had a friend of hers along for the gig, a lovely young girl, and with a good amount of time to kill, the four of us went bar hopping around the neighborhood, at one point even singing duets at a Japanese nightclub. When we went back to the Lodge, we discovered the LAPD had staged one of its then infamous raids to break up the punk concert, with much swinging of clubs and manhandling of anyone in reach. We were able to determine the LAPD, in addition to arresting a good number of people, had also confiscated the band's equipment. the last I saw of Hector was him rushing off to try and get the equipment back...

The Escovedos are part of a long tradition of Latin musical families that go back several generations. Particularly in Mexican and Cuban musical cultures, entire families, both close and extended family members, pass down musical knowledge to each succeeding generation. In Los Angeles, there is a thriving Mariachi community and it is almost always family groupings. Another well-known star who had his roots in Mariachi is Carlos Santana...

I'm surprised the way LAPD harassed punk bands in LA. What motivated them for such mean actions. Was drugs their excuse or what? Sure our own police force too was ready for interfering local rock artists life in 70's, but not quite that extent.

It may surprise people not familiar with California, but for a very, very long time, Southern California was a hot bed of Right-Wing Conservatism. While people outside of CA may have imagined the entire state was a hippie, Left-Wing paradise, down South it was literally more like the Down South you'd see in movies about rednecks. Where San Francisco had been settled very early in CA's history and had spawned a burgeoning population that welcomed culture and diverse populations, up until around 1920, San Francisco actually had a larger population than LA. What happened to more than double LA's population by 1930 was the Great Depression combined with the Dust Bowl disasters; hordes of people who had been bankrupted by the Depression and/or dispossessed by the Dust Bowl swarmed into LA seeking to find better pickings; along with their general cultural attitudes, they also brought racial/cultural prejudices from their home states. As time went on, those attitudes became dominant in the city's political structure from the Mayor on down to the Police Chief. When I first came to live in LA in 1970 (I had been in and out of the area since the mid-60s), a lot of the 'hillbilly' attitudes still persisted; in fact, going into the Valley part of the city was akin to taking a trip into the US South; not a good place to be if you were of color or if you were one of "them damn hippies"...

The LAPD, in particular had the 'Southern Sheriff' sort of attitude. The police chiefs were a lot of Far-Right wingnuts and ran their departments like their own little kingdom and fought off any efforts to curb their authority, going so far as to use intimidation and blackmail of other city officials to get their way. It wasn't until the LA Riots of 1992 and its aftermath that the last of the 'Big Boss' police chiefs was ousted and some degree of sanity and accountability was imposed on the police force. Today, the force is much better managed and has seen a dramatic change in the public's perception of the police for the better...

The war on Rock music by the LAPD was a product of the Right-Wing rule of a series of LAPD chiefs who viewed Rock, and those who enjoyed it, as anti-thetical to 'good ol' 'Merican' values. The LAPD went way out of their way to crush down any possibility of sustaining a thriving Rock scene. Starting with the Sunset Strip Riots in 1966 (immortalized in Buffalo Springfield's For What It's Worth); here is a clip of the 1966 incident that inspired the song...:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9ialZHUFVc

...the whole thing finally came to a head when Pink Floyd played some concert dates in LA at the downtown Sports Arena and the LAPD decided to make an extraordinary show of force to get the Police Chief's message of displeasure across; more than 500 people were arrested and the incidents were so shocking, bands and concert promoters refused to book into LA city venues; this resulted in a windfall for surrounding cities who welcomed the revenue to be gained by hosting major rock concerts. The Floyd Sports Arena incidents were depicted in the film The Wall where the scene outside the arena was recreated:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1JPyzMeA22Y

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/pink-floyd-fans-arrested/

Eventually, years later, demographics and changing cultural attitudes caught up to the LAPD and their 'ban' on Rock was removed by the City Council who realized the city was losing millions in tax revenue, licensing fees, etc., and by the business community who didn't particularly like seeing sales going to outside businesses that surrounded non-LA venues. Happens all the time: Dollars Defeats Dogma...

BTW Sex Pistols' were not allowed to play here at all, think they were considered too vicious.:03:

Dido'S fifth album coming on March 8th! Listened in on youtube, I'm happy, I waited long time for this. Her past two albums were wonderful, touching, fragile, her first two albums were iconic and great, al four always have been very melodic. Its been five years since her last one. And her voice is still as beautiful, if not even more so than ever before.

:yeah: :yeah: :yeah:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsVMKuG8QZU&list=PL1yX7ZwX78V3rWpHIhAp5FRl9ARp_d7pP

And one has to give it to her: while no longer being the sweet cutie of her teenage years, she is of stunning lady-like beauty today.

And - as far as I am aware - no drugs, no scandals, well-guarded family life instead: she may be a star, but seem to have kept both feets on the ground. Master of her life. And excisting way above the musical crap that is the pityful mainstream today.
I am a great fan, I confess. Since album one. There hardly was a single week in the past 15 years or so when I did not at least once listened to her music.

A fifth album! I was not certain.

I had posted in the Subsim Music Thread, #3921 (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2593575&postcount=3921) on Feburary 25 on the original song Layla, by Eric Clapton. I was remiss in not mentioning the incredible contributions of Duane Allman to not only the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, released November 9, 1970 but also The song Layla, which was the crown jewel on that album. Duane Allman played the slide guitar on that song. Duane's playing was over dubbed so it sounds as though there are 2 slide guitar players at work but it was all Duane Allman.

By placing his slide at points beyond the fretboard, Allman was able to play notes at a higher pitch than could be played with standard technique. The soaring melodies and buttery smooth guitar playing by Duane helped make “ Layla “ the masterpiece that it is recognized as today.

Layla's contrasting movements were supposedly composed separately by Clapton and Jim Gordon. The piano part has also been controversially credited to Rita Coolidge, Jim Gordon's girlfriend at the time but played by Jim Gordon. It has been confirmed Rita wrote the piano piece but was never given credit for it. The claim is also substantiated in Graham Nash's 2014 autobiography 'Wild Tales'.

Layla" was ranked number 27 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 greatest songs of All Time
The acoustic version won the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

Both Eric Clapton And Duane Allman had been steeped in the Blues Music traditions which would provide the modern underpinnings and basis of classic rock. Where Eric is more traditional and disciplined, Duane is more fluid and plays with emotion. Eric Clapton talked about Allman as the musical brother I'd never had but wished I did.

This is the Allman brothers, Live at the Fillmore East recorded March 12 and 13, 1971. This was recorded a few months before Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident on October 29, 1971. It ranks Number 49 among Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This is Stormy Monday from that Album with Greg Allman on Keyboards and Vocals along with guitarist, Dickey Betts.

I'll see your "Sweet Charity", and raise you "Flashdance", with the world's sexiest boilermaker "Alex" and friends. :)

The dance numbers, for which the movie is best known, were actually not primarily performed by the film's star, Jennifer Beals; any dance scenes where you do not see Beals in full figure, in full face, above the waist, in backlit silhouette, or without her face being obscured by her curly hair, were actually preformed by Marine Jahan, a professional dancer who did not receive on screen credit for her performance(s); Jahan, however did get to recreate the Flashdance routines, as herself, during the 1987 Super Bowl halftime show...

Another interesting note is, in the final dance scene where Beal's character does a dance audition, the break dance sequences were actually performed by a man wearing a wig...

About 2:30 into the video you posted, there is a scene of a shorthaired, blonde, dancer; the young lady is Cynthia Rhodes, a professional dancer an actress. I met her once, via a choreographer friend of mine and we had a very nice conversation; she was a very nice person person and very interesting. Rhodes is probably best known a the dancer who appears in the Toto video for their song Rosanna:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qmOLtTGvsbM

If you look carefully, you can see Patrick Swayze as one of the street toughs in t-shirts, before his dancing got dirty...

Rosanna was released in 1982, the same year Michael Jackson's Thriller was released, which feature members of Toto as his studio band...

This clip has the full performance of John Lee Hooker for the Blues Brothers film, along with stills from the production:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFnmQI0XHNY

Whenever I see the film and it gets to JLH's part, it reminds me of how an ex of mine, who put up with my interest in the Blues with great patience, told me how she was able to use the rubbed off knowledge to her advantage; shortly after we had broken up, she went on a date with a guy who was trying to impress her with his musical knowledge, much to her annoyance; when the JLH scene came up, he asked her, smugly, "Do you know who that is?"; she immediately shot back, "Yeah, its John Lee Hooker, the song is Boom, Boom, and he's playing on Maxwell St."; she told me he sulked through the rest of the date...

@ Commander Wallace re Allman brothers, Live at the Fillmore East

There's a record I played a lot. It's interesting that a number of band members relatives have followed in their fathers' and uncles' footsteps. Devon Allman, Gregg's son and Duane Betts, Dickie's son are both accomplished guitarists. Devon has played with the Allman Bros. Band and Duane with his fathers' band Dickey Betts & Great Southern. The most well known Allman offspring though is Derek Trucks who is drummer Butch Trucks' nephew. An accomplished slide guitarist much influenced by Duane Allmans' playing he too was a member of the long running Allman Bros. band. His own band The Derek Trucks Band won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2010. His current band, The Tedeschi Trucks Band also won a Grammy in 2012. The bands lead singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi is Dereks' wife. They have a son and a daughter.

I have the Allman Brothers-Live at the Fillmore East Album on CD as well, Marcel. I'm glad it's not on vinyl as It would have been worn out long ago. Allman Brothers-Live at the Fillmore East is widely regarded as one of the best if not the best live album of all time. Many aspiring guitarists and musicians learned through that album that you could play melodically and slow, not fast and furious and still get your point across.

You are so right with regards to relatives and friends of the Allman's moving on to careers in music of their own. How could they not being around talent like the Allman's ? :yep: Derek Trucks collaborates on a regular basis with Eric Clapton and others that recognize and play Blues based music.

Susan Tedeshi has played with double trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan's band. I think they recognize Susan for the talent and dynamo that she is. Susan can play the guitar and rock out with the best of them. Great song that you posted by the way, Marcel. :Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

"I can see her lyin' back in her satin dress
In a room where ya do what ya don't confess
Sundown you better take care
If I find you beenn creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sundown ya better take care
If I find you been creepin' 'round my back stairs
She's been lookin' like a queen in a sailor's dream
And she don't always say what she really means
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
I can picture every move that a man could make
Getting lost in her lovin' is your first mistake
Sundown you better take care
If I find you been creepin' 'round my back stairs
Sometimes I think it's a sin
When I feel like I'm winnin' when I'm losin' again
I can see her lookin' fast in her faded jeans
She's a hard lovin' woman, got me feelin' mean
Sometimes I think it's a shame
When I get feelin' better when I'm feelin' no pain
Sundown you better take care
If I find you been creepin' 'round my back stairs

Well familiar with Cherry Vanilla; she was part of Andy Warhol's Factory collective and was a part of Bowie's early career as a publicist; here, in Hollywood, she was an icon to the groupies. I recall seeing that same photo of her as a poster in a record store here in LA; I did make it a point to stop in whenever I passed by... :03: :D

She must be in her 70s by now; she has had a very interesting life, indeed...

@ vienna, did you gob on the captain??

Nah, that particular UK custom didn't translate well to the Colonies. Your comment does remind me of an incident involving Devo; they were going to play their first ever show in LA and there was a great deal of anticipation in the local Punk circles based on the video for Jocko Homo; Punk was still new to the US and the punks only had what was going on in the UK as a template, including the expectoral displays of 'appreciation'; I was at the show and the band members were horrified at the gobbing they endured to the point of Mark Mothersbaugh angrily and explicitly declaring they'd had it with LA and would never play here again; as a result of the show, the wealthy father of a young Devo fan offered the band a boatload of money to play at a private party for his daughter and her friends; Devo's disdain for LA quickly evaporated, even faster than the gobs...

Here's Chery's take on the Punks from 1977...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBWCQxDFOAs

...and this is the real deal (WARNING: a bit of choice language involved)...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZUOKqYSd8c

It is interesting to note how a goodly portion of the audience in the clip were not even born or were very, very young when the Pistols first came on the scene; the mark of truly influential and/or great bands or artists is when their audience easily spans generations...

The question I have about the above is: Why is there a California State Flag displayed above the stage to the audience's right in a hall in Brixton?...

I have the album I posted as well. You mentioned Southern Rock. Ironically, I had a conversation with a friend of mine a couple weeks ago as to what constitutes Southern Rock. His answer was that Southern Rock combines Blues and Country Music with Gospel Music. I'm not sure if that's accurate but as a music teacher once told me, If it sounds good, it is good.
