Josie Cotton - He Could Be The One
Seeing the name Josie Cotton shook up the old memory banks. She was very big in the Los Angeles music scene in the early 80s. Aside from being probably the sexiest singer on the scene, she had an awful lot of talent and potential. I have long thought she made a big mistake with her first single, Johnny, Are You Queer?; she got blasted from all sides: the Religious Right conservatives considered the song a recruitment tool to turn straights gay, and the gay rights activists considered the song insulting; added to this was the reluctance of some radio stations to play the single. Its really all too bad; Josie could have been Katy Perry, in terms of popularity; an irony is Josie was invited to sing Johnny at a Los Angeles area Gay Pride Festival a few years back; some of the same people who excoriated her earlier were now celebrating her and her song; a further irony is Katy Perry made her fame singing I Kissed A Girl; thirty or so years do make a difference, I guess...
Josie is still singing and is still stunningly beautiful. Here she is singing with the Ventures:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-7nX82-Y50
Thinking about Josie (give me a minute........OK, I'm back now...) also reminded me of another performer who also had a couple of novelty hits in the early 8os. Actress/comedian/singer Julie Brown released this single which I would venture to guess would not get airplay today...

Don't know what her real hair color is, but she can always use this excuse...

She could dance hard, too. Here she's the lead singer in a band she formed with her sisters and friends before she went to the UK and became a star; she got her moves from a side gig she had as ago-go dancer in a nightclub; it's a miracle she didn't get whiplash...

This video for the Los Angeles band, The Muffs, and their 1995 song Sad Tomorrow gives me a bit of nostalgia; the setting is an actual pawn shop about two miles away from my home and is the place where I bought my first 4-track reel-to-reel tape deck. The shop is famous as a sort of 'pawn shop to the stars'; there is all a manner of items available from gold and platinum records pawned by stars on the skids to oddities; the last time I was there, they had a complete human skeleton for sale. A unique setting for a unique group...

I have heard many versions and renditions of this classic song but none better than this version by Loreena McKennit. Loreena gives this song an ethereal quality to it. It's a beautiful song made all the more so by Loreena's vocals. Loreena is a bit of a triple threat in that she can sing, play piano and harp.
quote: "Bonny Portmore" is an Irish traditional (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_traditional_music) folk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_music) song which laments the demise of Ireland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ireland)'s old oak (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak) forests, specifically the Great Oak of Portmore or the Portmore Ornament Tree, which fell in a windstorm in 1760 and was subsequently used for shipbuilding (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipbuilding) and other purposes.
In 1664 an extensive castle was erected at Portmore, near Portmore Lough (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portmore_Lough), County Antrim (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_Antrim) by Lord Conway (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Conway,_1st_Earl_of_Conway), on the site of a more ancient fortress. It contained accommodation for two troops of horse.[1] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore#cite_note-1) The old oak is believed to have stood on the estate of Portmore Castle.
The melody of this song was first published 1840 in Bunting's "Ancient Music of Ireland" and was collected from the playing of Ulster harper Daniel Black in 1796.[2] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore#cite_note-2) The air is probably as old as the time of the O'Neill's of Ballinderry, who, due to declining fortunes were forced to sell the property to Lord Conway. The first verse appears to make reference to this sale.[3] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore#cite_note-3)
A Scottish version laments the loss of a lover left behind at Portmore, which William Tait (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Tait_%28publisher%29) identifies with (St. Fillans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Fillans)).[4] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore#cite_note-4) (There is also a Portmore Loch in the Scottish Borders (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Borders)). While attributed to Donald Cameron, Burns (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Burns) biographer Alan Cunningham believes it comes from the north of Ireland.[5] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore#cite_note-tegg-5) Peter Buchan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Buchan) published a version which formed the basis of Burns' "My Heart's in the Highlands"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonny_Portmore
If the song sounds familiar and you watch movies, you may remember this song from one of the " Highlander " movies.

Heck, I had forgotten this one completely over the past 15, 20 years, and then suddenly stumble over it now, and get hit by the beauty and romantic in it like back in those days. This is John Williams at his best. Everybody knows Raiders, Stars Wars, Superman, so many others of his over 100 soundtracks (50 oscar nominations, 5 oscars) - but strangely, this gem of a movie score usually does not get mentioned.

Good one Skybird. Here is another classical piece from Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff, a Russian virtuoso Classical Pianist and composer / conductor. His works are among the more well known in the classical catalogue. Rachmaninoff remains one of my favorite composers and this also remains one of my favorites if not my favorite from Rachmaninoff. Rachmaninoff is one of my favourite composers as well. My return to your Rachmaninoff offer is his 3rd piano concerto played by Martha Argarich and the RSO (today DSO) Berlin. My father played in the orchestra and I was sitting in the audience during this performance. I know no more energetic performance of this, including Rachmaninoff and Horowitz - both were also fast, but both made more mistakes in their playing of this piece, the pros say (most people porbbaly cannot hear it). Argerich had a fire that consumed the air in the philharmonic already in the first minutes. She really blew the roof up.

Hendrix completed hisparatrooper (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paratrooper) training in just over eight months, and Major General C. W. G. Rich awarded him the prestigious Screaming Eagles patch on January 11, 1962...https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/5/5e/Hendrix_in_Army.jpg/170px-Hendrix_in_Army.jpg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hendrix_in_Army.jpg) One of the most notable renditions of the anthem was Jimi Hendrix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix)'s screaming solo guitar performance at the 1969 Woodstock Festival (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_Festival), captured on the documentary the event. Closing the four day show..clad in Red, White, and Blue:salute:, Hendrix played the anthem with a number of distorted regressions — some mimicking the "rockets" and "bombs" of the anthem's lyrics — to great acclaim from the audience. Although contemporary political pundits described his interpretation as a statement against the Vietnam War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War), three weeks later Hendrix explained its meaning: "We're all Americans ... it was like 'Go America!'... We play it the way the air is in America today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwIymq0iTsw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwIymq0iTsw) He played it out of respect and he put his sweet, sweet licks all over it out of love. It's a masterpiece and the only rendition of the SSB that anyone will ever remember, ever. People have been listening to it repeatedly for 47 years in awe. We are still talking about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTqaa5KB1As (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTqaa5KB1As)

Fube NAH! Everybody copied everybody in the sixties. My personal favorite: Eric Clapton holds his own-Hey I'm still playin' my original vinylhttps://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a8/Creamwheelsoffire.jpeg Wheels of Fire here on a real turntable!!-primarily because as true student of the American Blues he knew when to start re-learnin' and developing his enormous talent: Clapton understood this immediately... Hendrix was invited to play in on a Cream set... he jumped in on Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor". Clapton said of this: He played just about every style you could think of, and not in a flashy way. I mean he did a few of his tricks, like playing with his teeth and behind his back, but it wasn't in an upstaging sense at all, and that was it ... He walked off, and my life was never the same again.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMkdhVQMBHY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMkdhVQMBHY)

Good choice, Aktung! It is a true testament to the genius of Hendrix that for a very long time, and probably still, venues of all sorts played the Hendrix recording of The National Anthem to start whatever event was/is being held. It was never really seen as a protest against anything in particular, but it is a sonic encapsulation of the emotions of the time and stands relevant even now...
Regarding Hendrix and Killing Floor, Clapton has stated he had been long trying to find a means of performing the song in the Cream's trio format and had been frustrated by the complexity; Jimi came along and totally blew away Clapton with a masterful version of the number; of course, it helps if you are Hendrix and you can somehow sound like you are two guitarists in one...
(Unfortunately, there is no YT video of Hendrix performing Killing Floor at Monterey Pop in '67, so here is a link to a Daily Motion video, with apologies...)...

Some time back, in another thread, in a universe far, far away (sorry, got carried away...), I posted about the time I saw Hendrix perform and had no idea it was him. There used to be a club at the far east end of the Sunset Strip and, during the daytime hours in the summer, they used to open these big doors that formed the outside wall. A lot of the local people would drop by, mainly musicians, and hang out, sometimes have loose acoustic jam sessions. I'm there one day, and in comes this sort of shy black guy dressed in the sort of hippies clothes of the time. He sat and listened to the jam for a while and finally asked if he could join in; he borrows a guitar and proceeds to play beautifully but not in a flashy manner, impressing the other players present. After a coupe of numbers, he excused himself and left...
Some months later, I drove my mother to a large box-type store, and, while she was shopping for what she needed, I went over to the record department and looked through the new arrivals. There, in the new record bins, was an album by some guy named Jimi and his new group. I recognized the face and thought to myself, "Whaddya know, that guy got a record contract"...
..and Aktung, you may well be a pioneer in a new resurgence:

A truly sad loss today, 4 July 2017. John Blackwell Jr., a very highly respected and influential drummer who played across several genres passed away today after a battle with brain cancer. Best known as the drummer in Prince's band for twelve years, he also had extensive credits with other notable performers and bands. The fact the Prince, well-known for demanding perfection from his backing musicians, retained Blackwell for those dozen years speaks volumes. Here is his Wikipedia entry; it is well worth a read:

In the liner notes to the Rolling Stones Sticky Fingers album, there is "a bit of advice" from the album's producer, Jimmy Miller:
A bit of advice from Jimmy M.: Maximum cycle characteristics and frequency response at high decibel level have been set according to standards suggested in the GUY STEVENS Producer Manual, chart R-357, in index, page 304. These recommended standards were compiled by the same authority having recently measured audible damage created by supersonic aircraft – if for any reason you do not agree with the standards, turn it up.

Not a mention in my area of John Blackwell Jr.'s passing... such is the state of "news" where every half hour they repeat the top five stories ad infinitum ad nauseum, do 50 segments for the weather (which is usually wrong within 5 minutes), and then a 30 minutes sports segment... sigh... anyway, I'll miss his skin banging... oops, that doesn't sound right... - but it really is a musician's term...
My brother bought the 'Cecilia' 45 (rpm, that is, as in 'record'), and my mom ended up breaking it ("... up in my bedroom..."), like she did my 'Steppenwolf' LP (as in 33 rpm 'record') because of 'The Pusher'... such were the days. Nowadays, every other song out there is laced with expletive-deletives as a matter of course. I bought Sticky Fingers the day it came out in the local store. My mom did not like the cover. She thought it inappropriate for a Sophomore is high school, so the 'zipper' came off the front cover... I accused my mom of secretly wanting to get ahold of Keith Richards... :har: - she didn't like that joke... Anyway, excellent jams fellers! Let's pick it up some:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVv94T5LF0c
What is happening with some of these videos on ToobYu, where they're changing the 'original' posting to these "slick" things that aren't the same, like they're worked over with overdubs and then re-posted?... I like the originals better!... Reminds me of modern-day radio, where they use a "re-mix" version of old songs, and splash the reverb on extra heavy. What was wrong with the old version that you had to get rid of it?... :yeah:

Great music being posted recently including the classical music. Jim posted a bit of Simon and Garfunkel and aside from their more well known music like " Bridge over troubled water " there are other treasures as well like this one. Art Garfunkel introduces this one and the music starts at the 1:00 mark.

That Central Park Cpmcert was fantastic. That was on telly in my neighborhood a while back. They did a simulcast with an FM station, and the sound was excellent. I just wish they would have brought a real grand piano for "Bridge Over Troubled Water", but oh well... While we're doing Simon & Garfunkle, how 'bout we add "Williams" into the mix?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_T7HgZKZjo
I remember this from when I was an even younger kid, and my mom & dad used to watch the Andy Williams show. I eventually learned how to do that on guitar, but alas, have long forgotten it. It was actually kind of easy, once you got it...

Attention Walmart shoppers! Oi, you yabbos!...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZaz7OqyTHQ
The inspiration for the above is from a visit I made to a Walmart store here in Burbank, CA, a nice little middle/upper middle class town just outside of Los Angeles. As with other Walmart stores, they have piped in background music. Normally, the music is your basic generic, non-offensive pop music, sort of a latter day Muzak; imagine my surprise when House of Pain's Jump Around came blaring out of the overhead speakers; either Walmart is loosening up some, or some poor sod who was in charge of the music is looking for another position... :03:
Now for a bit of interesting musical history. Early in their career, the Stone recorded a version of the song Mercy, Mercy by Don Covay, a Hall of Fame R&B singer/songwriter. I had heard Covay's original recording on a San Francisco radio station as a teen and later tried to learn the guitar parts form the Stones recording. The parts can be tricky and I tried hard to get the timing and phrasing down. What I didn't know at the time is the guitar parts were tricky because the guitarist in Covay's band at the time was a young man barely into his twenties by the name of Jimi Hendrix...

..and how do you say "Bdaaa!!!" in English, please?...
<O>
Just came across this clip: there are songs and their recordings that are epic in scale and impress with production skills and enhanced performance; it takes a whole different talent to strip down massive production and get to the heart of the song. There are performers who will tell you the only true measure of the 'greatness' of a song is if it can be performed well with just an acoustic guitar; Here is a song we normally hear as a big production number reduced to one acoustic guitar and one voice and, in turn, elevated to real art:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYwAXFl26t0
I don't know who thought up the simple arrangement for the guitar part, but it kind of beats the heck out of an electric guitar and a wall of amplifiers. The tone and style of the voice blends and complements with the instrument. The whole presentation is near genius. I just wish the song had been complete; it is an annoying habit/practice of TV shows to truncate songs just to accommodate on-air time and to make room to sell you whatever their sponsors are shilling...

Fastball front man Tony Scalzo came up with the idea for the song after reading journalistic articles which described the disappearance of an elderly married couple, Lela and Raymond Howard from Salado, Texas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salado,_Texas), who left home in June 1997 to attend the Pioneer Day festival at nearby Temple, Texas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temple,_Texas), despite Lela's Alzheimers and Raymond recently recovering from brain surgery. They were discovered two weeks later, dead, at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Springs,_Arkansas), hundreds of miles off their intended route.About the song, Scalzo said that "It's a romanticized take on what happened" One of my favorite car radio tunes on the 50 mile trip to work this AM... two days in a row!!:hmmm:: DRIVE CAREFULLY and take your Aricept BBY's:O:: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0wfu3tOrtQ (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0wfu3tOrtQ)

The last video brought back a variety of memories. Several of my friends and acquaintances at the time can be seen in the crowd scenes (ah, Meredith, what became of you?) and the location is an old historic theater, The Mayan, that, at the time, I believe was still it its porn theater incarnation. Its hard to believe that video was shot 38 years ago...

This brings a smile to my face. I've got a friend who's a bit naive, well back in the early '80s The Ramones were touring Australia and some friends of hers asked her if she'd like to come along and see them. She says "ok, what are they like?". "They're like The Platters" they said.
So she goes to the Hair Salon and gets a nice hairdo, puts on a pretty dress, perfume etc. The friends pick her up, and they get to the venue - the Coogee Bay Hotel....... and there's the whole audience dressed in black and leather, off their face on cough syrup, some passed out in the gutter.
Poor girl.
With all her electronics, I was wondering what she could do without them...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnMhUPewk6c
I was digging around in my CD collection looking for a particular album (which I still haven't found) and I came across an album recorded by the actress Goldie Hawn back in 1972. I had found it in an unsorted CD bin at the late, lamented Tower Records store on the Sunset Strip. Most albums by non-singer celebrities are very often train wrecks (see: anything by William Shatner), but Goldie actually was/is not a bad singer at all; here she is covering a Joni Mitchell song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYL1kNERJTQ
...and a Peter, Paul & Mary cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVvwbFNDwZk
This clip is by French actress/singer Claudine Longet, former wife of Andy Williams:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LF7vjPosQF0
I included Longet because, while re-listening to Goldie's album, I was reminded of Longet; Longet had been a very active performer until 1976/77, when she was tried for accidentally fatally shooting her then Olympic skier boyfriend in Aspen, Colorado; she was found guilty of negligent homicide and served 30 days in jail and paid a small fine. Remembering Longet in turn reminded me of a scene in the TV series, Gilmore Girls. In one episode, Rory, the daughter and her friend are listening to a Claudine Longet album. Lorelai, the mom, comes into the room and asks who they are listening to; Rory replies "Claudine Longet". Lorelei gasps and says, “The chick who shot the skier?” Rory replies, “Um, sure, why not?” Lorelai says, “Wow! Renaissance woman!”...

I've also noticed decline in some areas of YT music videos with suddenly disappearing swaths of clips now gone; either the RIAA and the labels are on another manhunt or the labels are seeking to bolster their stake in the streaming music area...
I do remember Frijid Pink! Great pull! The guitar sound, although the band was from Detroit, was very San Francisco Scene in nature; the guitar player sounded quite a bit like Jorma from The Jefferson Airplane. Frijid Pink's version sort of sounded to me as a sort of "Rising Sun meets White Room" hybrid. The sting "butterfly vibrato" and slides are very much like Jorma. This is a performance clip of Frijid Pink singing House Of The Rising Sun on TV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t40INnb6DnY
The song has been recorded and sung by a great many artists (there's even a strange version by The Beatle on YT) and here is a live version by the great Nina Simone:
