Trans-Siberian Orchestra- Christmas Cannon. Taken from the beautiful original composition of German Composer Johann Pachelbel "Canon in D."

Performed by a children's choir group.

If anyone saw the movie, " Roadhouse " with Patrick Swayze as the lead actor, then they will recognize Jeff Healy. Jeff was of course the lead guitarist in the house band at the Double Deuce. Jeff was a unique guitar player. Jeff played his Fender Stratocastor on his lap like a pedal steel guitar.

Here is Jeff on the David Letterman show playing the Iconic George Harrison song, " While my guitar gently weeps." Jeff of course also does the vocals as well. Sadly, Jeff passed away March 2, 2008 at the age of 41.

A great song from Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

^ and above, i have seen Terence Trent d'Arby two times live in the 1980ies, before he changed his name to "Sananda Maitreya".
Still don't know if any of those relate to his real name, but he sure made some good music.

"Maitreya" is the name of a future Buddha. According to tradition, a Buddha is someone who reveals the Dhamma/Dharma [truth] to the world. Therefore, a Buddha can only exist in a world that is ignorant of the Dhamma. IOW, humanity will have to forget about the teachings of Gautama Buddha before Maitreya Buddha can exist. And there can only ever be one Buddha in existence at any given time.

I'm not sure about the name "Sananda". Siddhartha Gautama did have a disciple named Ananda.

It is common for a person who has chosen to become a Buddhist monk or nun to take on a different name. I think the name is chosen by the person's master/teacher, but don't quote me on that. So, perhaps Sananda was influenced by Buddhism in some way? Or maybe it has something to do with Hinduism. It seems Buddhism and Hinduism share a lot of words, traditions and beliefs. But I don't know very much about Hinduism.

At any rate, the Wikipedia page for Terence Trent Howard (his real name) says that the name change had nothing to do with religion. Apparently he just wanted a new identity. It also says that "Sananda" is Sanskrit for "possessed of happiness". That's nice.

Cheers!

This is a little bit different. A group called the Piano Guys was at a assisted living / Nursing home. The group came in to entertain the residents there. It's pretty magical what happened after they started playing. I loved the reaction of the residents as the group started playing with people getting up and dancing, some even forming a Conga line and enjoying the performance. I hope everyone enjoys it as much as I did.

I've posted this band before; I'm most impressed by the guitar playing abilities of the lead guitarist, Ina Spang; its amazing how much control and feel she has as a Blues player, even more impressive from a German-born female guitarist; when the band first started out some years ago (note they have no bass player), Ina would just stand in one place, occasionally sort of marching place, smiling and grinning as the lead singer, her brother, would bellow out his vocals; she has, of late, begun to move around more and has made more of an effort to show off her skills; I think even her brother is beginning to realize he's not the real talent focus of Muddy What?, his sister and her guitar playing is the real center...

Thinking of Ina Spang's smile and grin stance while playing reminded me of the Band X from Los Angeles; X's lead guitarist was Billy Zoom whose trademark was a wide-legged stance while playing and grinning away as the band tore through their sets; Billy adopted the wide stance due to his very tall stature; he would very often tower above the other members of the bands he played in, so he would stand wide to reduce his perceived height on stage; when he joined X, the lead sing, Exene, is a diminutive woman, so not only did Billy assume a wide stage stance, so did the bass player, john Doe (Exene's husband) in an effort to make Exene more visible to the audiences...

^ In truth, after WW2, American and English blues and rock musicians would spend decades influencing each other. In the 60's, so many English rock musicians were visiting America and inundating the radio airwaves that the term " British Invasion " was coined.

English Musicians would cite such diverse artists from Elvis Presley and the Motown sound from Detroit Michigan to Jazz guitarist great, Wes Montgomery. Talented musicians from England and America would fuse and interweave all of these influences and more into some truly epic bands, artists and songs.

Names like Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Robin Trower and George Harrison, among so many others would become household names. Later, Brian May, David Gilmour, Peter Frampton, Roger Waters and Duane Alman, and my favorites, Steve Winwood and drummer Phil Collins would earn well deserved accolades.

There are so many, many others. All of these artists and more would dominate modern music with their sheer talent and brilliance. Other blues based musicians like the Alman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd would shape Southern blues based rock. Their collective talent and brilliance becomes more apparent against the backdrop of what today masquerades as music which I consider as little more than noise.

I will readily admit to being a music snob and I'm fine with that.

There are current artists and guitarists like Joe Bonamassa, Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepard, Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi and of course, John Mayer. These are exceptional artists.

These artists would lead generations into picking up a Guitar and or playing Drums, Piano and the like. This would lead to other innovations like the vibrato technique used by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton which again, shaped modern music. This would make names like Fender, Vox and Marshall common names in modern music.

Later, other guitarists like Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Steve Morse would not only influence countless people like me to pick up a guitar but also confound us as well with their sheer talent and artistry.

Again, this would lead to the developments of Ibanez and ESP guitars among others in search of new sounds with newer shaped guitar necks and fret board and materials which facilitated vastly improved articulation abilities and speed.

Music is a living thing and has to breath. :yep:

It's great to have you back, Vienna. Especially in the music thread where your input has been sorely missed. :Kaleun_Salute:
How about a great blues tune from the Alman brothers ?

Stormy Monday-Live at the Filmore East in 1971. The original artist of this song was T-bone Walker.

My tastes are eclectic as well. My tastes run the gamut from Classical to Jazz, blues and Rock. The music I was listening to as a kid was already 30 Years or more old. A music teacher once told me that if you want to learn music, go to the originators not the imitators.

The Alman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd have always been favorites. What amazes me is the guys in these bands were 22 or so, boys really. Yet, these young guys had such a refined sense of music structure and compositions.

Guitarist Duane Alman was ahead of his time and like many great musicians and guitarists, Duane passed away much too soon.

^ Al pitrelli is a great Guitarist. Al is the lead Guitarist and musical director of the group / band, Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Al cites Jeff Beck as a guiding influence and has said, " When Jeff plays, I don't even want to pick up a guitar anymore." Such is the respect that Jeff also garnered as a Guitar player.

This may well be a forgotten cover performance by Jeff Beck.

Jeff is seen in this video playing Apache made famous by the equally famous " surf " band, the Ventures. Jeff also covers Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny. Interestingly enough, Santo and Johnny had used a lap Steel guitar to get the unique sounds they did. Jeff does it with a six string Stratocaster and a hefty dose of reverb on the amp.

A true piece of Rock music history: Jeff Beck jamming with David Bowie (as Ziggy Stardust) on a couple of numbers in concert; ably keeping up is Mick Ronson, not a bad guitarist himself; Beck is shown playing slide guitar, a rare bit of film and, towards the end, gives a bit of a nod to Jimi by playing the guitar behind his head...

Just goes to show what two very fine guitarists, one a true genius of the the instrument, could do without the massive pedal boards, sound racks, and digital sweetening the 'twiddley, twiddley, twiddley' so-called 'guitar gods/heroes' today so heavily rely on to try to pass off their 'talent'; nothing more for Beck and Ronson than wood, steel, fingers, and a deep, deep well of talent and creativity...

The second clip, Around And Around (sometimes labelled as 'Round and 'Round, was a Chuck Berry composition; The Rolling Stones had the number as a staple of their live shows (as well as releasing a studio recording) and it is said The Stones version was the inspiration for Bowie's take on the song...

Bonnie Raitt and Bruce Hornsby on Piano. Incredible performance and duet. Bonnie is truly and under rated vocalist and artist to say nothing of her blues style, slide guitar on her trusty Fender Straocaster. As for Bruce Hornsby, His chord phrasing is awesome. Great Piano player.

I can't make you love me-live.

I waited a few days after this clip was posted to YT; usually Hendrix clips have a very short life on YT due to the Hendrix Estate being extremely watchful of anything related to Jimi and they are very efficient in having clips pulled from YT and any other places that may harbor posts (oddly, the only other artist that so vigorously enforces copyrights/image claims in Pat Benatar; she is very 'quick on the draw')...

This is a colorized, enhanced clip of a live performance The Experience did on a BBC show hosted by Lulu...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usel2OAtQ_s

A couple of interesting things about this clip; since it was preformed at the BBC The JHE was not permitted to use their usual "Wall of Marshalls" amp setup, leaving Jimi and Noel Redding to make do with Marshall half-stacks; if you look at the set up you will note Jimi has only two pedals connected to his Strat, a Wah pedal and what appears to be an Octavia pedal, yet he produces a very wide range of sounds from a minimal rig; the interruption of "hey Joe" was not per-rehearsed for the BBC network officials (although Jimi and the guys had secretly decided to do the song switch on their own), and the BBC was not amused at all to have their rigid schedules disrupted; when Jim say they were being 'put off the air', it was a literal statement; off camera there was wild gesticulation and mouthed invective trying to get The JHE to stop; not only did the JHE change up songs without notice, they also were going way over time in their set and the rigid schedule of the BBC was faced with the high crime of having the BBC News program being delayed; although this clip ends just after Jimi stops playing, there are other, longer versions of the incident showing a very flustered Lulu reacting to the mild chaos erupting around her...

Another notable thing is this performance clip was almost lost permanently; the BBC had a policy of either recycling videotapes by recording over old programs or, in the case of film, destroying the footage to free up storage space; during one of the BBC stock purges, a man was contacted by a friend at the BBC and told the Beeb was about to ditch a load of footage and there was a lot of railway footage in the latest batch; the guy at the Beeb knew his friend was a rail fan and offered him a chance to pick through the footage for anything he might want to salvage; as the rail fan was sorting out his selections, he found amid the rail footage the above Hendrix footage from the Lulu show and realized it was a gem that should be preserved and saved it form the dust bins...

Every song a hit. Even the covers.

I'm glad you liked it, August. Herb Alpert is awesome. My grand dad and dad had all of these albums by Herb Alpert and so many others. My dad also really liked the " surf " sounds of the Ventures and had every Ventures album made and also Richard Anthony Monsour, better know as Dick Dale. Duane Eddy Carl Perkins. These were times when Herb Alpert and other artists of their generation were just that, real artists who could play real instruments and play them well.

My Grand father and Dad weren't frivolous with money but they both insisted on good Hi-Fi audio equipment back then. Today, I'm the same way. My dad even built his own speaker cabinets and fitted it with the drivers / speakers that he felt gave him the best sound. My siblings and I got the full benefit of that. :yep:

I also liked the album cover of Herb Alpert's, Taste of Honey / Whipped cream and other delights. I remember staring at that cover for long periods of time when I was a young kid. It might explain why I also love whipped cream and, um, never mind.... :D:yep:

Another one from Herb Alpert-Rise. Just awesome musicianship and artistry from Herb and the bass, drummer and other musicians.
