A remake of the original " After Midnight " by Eric Clapton as featured in the Michelob beer commercial. Just like the song, " Cocaine, " After Midnight, is also a J.J Cale original, redone by Eric Clapton.

A true legend of the modern music world passed has away:
https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/hal-blaine-drummer-dead-90-806827/
Along with Earl Palmer, Hal Blaine was the steady beat, the heartbeat, behind so many hit songs of the 60s and 70s, as well as TV and film soundtracks. Hal was a real "go to" player when a solid, professional, creative, and reliable drummer was called for; as part of the world famous "Wrecking Crew" group of studio musicians based out of the Hollywood recording studios, he helped shape the sounds and launch the careers of countless musical acts. Hal was a "drummer's drummer", someone who all other drummers, from the famous pros to the beginning drummers looked to as a model and inspiration.

^ Great song. An absolute classic from the movie, Highlander. Clancy Brown, who played Kurgan in the original movie has said in interviews, The soundtrack and work by Queen, made the movie the success that it was.
Another great song and featured in the Highlander movies is Bonny Portmore, as sung by Loreena McKennitt. Loreena's vocals on this song are fantastic.

I posted a clip of Dick Dale performing Misrilou in the thread about his passing and it brought to mind a version of the song predating Dale's version that was also very popular. In the 50s and 60s, there was a popular style of music known as "Loungire Music", which was mainly instrumental, and is sometimes referred to as "mood music'; a subset of "Lounge" was "Exotica", music based on styles from parts of the world such as the Middle East, South America, etc. A lot of the music of this type was pretty cheesy and about as authentic as the Disneyland Jungle Cruise. This clip is by a musician/bandleader/composer named Martin Denny whose Exotica compositions and adaptations were hugely popular; this is Denny's rendition of Misirlou:

I had posted Misrilou from Dick Dale and it failed to open here for whatever reason. I instead left Dick Dale's version of Pipeline, featuring, Stevie Ray Vaughan. Dick Dale was good friends with Leo Fender, creator of the Fender Tele-castor and Stratocastor. Like Jimi Hendrix, Dick played a right handed guitar, left handed, restringing the guitar to make it work. Leo Fender at some point started making lefty guitars for left handed players. Leo also built a large number of Amplifier and guitar combinations only to see Dick Blow up the amps.
Quote:
Not long before recording Surfers’ Choice, Dale was introduced to guitar- and amp-maker Leo Fender, who gave Dale a Stratocaster guitar and asked him to stress-test his latest 30-watt amp and speaker set—which Dale promptly blew up. More testing followed. Dale liked to brag that he ruined nearly 50 of Fender’s amp-speaker sets, and that a few actually exploded into flames. Eventually, Fender came up with the 100-watt Fender Dual Showman amp and ran it through a fifteen-inch expanded-cabinet speaker; this sonic-monster combo later became the hardware cornerstone for metal rock.

Great find and a really great band name!...
Leo also built a large number of Amplifier and guitar combinations only to see Dick Blow up the amps.
...
Actually, Dick Dale played a left-handed guitar, but he had it strung as if it were a right-handed model, so his guitar fretboard was actually upside-down from what a fully lefty guitar would be; Hendrix played a right-handed model restrung as a if it were a left-handed model, a complete opposite of Dick Dale's setup; it should also be noted that Hendrix was fully ambidextrous in regards to guitar playing; he could take a normal right-handed guitar, flip it over, and play normally; IIRC, Hendrix produced a track for a band Billy Gibbons was in and Jimi was frustrated the guitar track wasn't sounding just right and Gibbons, also frustrated by Jimi's frustration, told Hendrix to come into the studio and record the track himself if he thought he could do better; Hendrix came out of the control room into the studio, took up the guitar, a right-handed and strung model, flipped it over, had the track re-cued and played, nailing the track on the first try; the story further goes that Hendrix wanted a backwards guitar track and, without changing guitars, had the tape played back backwards and played over the reversed music, using the volume knob on the guitar to control the swells of sound; when the track was played back forwards, the backwards track was perfectly in sync with the rest of the song...
I have an inexpensive left-handed Strat copy I acquired many years ago that I restrung as a right handed guitar just to experiment with the sound possibilities; its a bit of work to play if you're used to a 'normal' Strat, since the controls are at the top of the body (actually more convenient), the trem bar screws in at the top of the bridge (makes it a task to hand mute the strings), and the body cutaways are reversed, with the deeper cutaway at the top; its the last, cutaway, problem that may have made Dick Dale opt for the left-handed body style, so as to get more reach on the higher frets...
...
My question is, did Dick Dale influence another group, The Ventures or was it the other way around ? The Ventures also had that twangy, southern California sound.
...
It depends on what you consider 'surf music' and what you consider 'influence'. Dick Dale is widely acknowledged as having, if not totally created, at least being one of the very first to record 'surf music'. Now, there is the question of what is 'surf music'? Is it the Southern California phenomenon alone or is it a wider form? The Ventures were originally from Tacoma, Washington State, USA, and later moved to LA; they released their first hit, Walk, Don't Run in 1960, a year before Dale's first hit, but the recording doesn't really have that full 'surf music' sound the Ventures would have in later recordings...
In 1959, a full year before the Ventures, a duo of brothers, Santo & Johnny, recorded an instrument single, Sleep Walk, which a lot of people claim is the first record with the 'surf music' sound:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YBRCvVpknvg
Legend also has it the Santo & Johnny recording was the first record ever heard by a youngster from Seattle, WA, named James Marshall Hendrix...
To further complicate matters regarding influences, there was a band, The Wailers (aka The Fabulous Wailers) from the same city as The Ventures, Tacoma, WA, and at exactly the same time, 1959, as the Ventures. The Wailers specialized in instrumentals that verged on the edge of 'surf music' and incorporated elements that would later be credited to surf players:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw7Y85761Dc
Here's an article about Dick Dale's influence on other bands:
R.I.P. Dick Dale: 12 Artists Influenced by the King of the Surf Guitar --
https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/rock/8502865/dick-dale-12-artists-influenced-rip
So, its a sort of personal choice of who you think influenced whom. I'm still not fully sure whom I want to credit...

I knew you would have the answers , Vienna. I remember Santo and Johnny's " Sleepwalk." It is one of the most widely covered songs. Some people do a better job on it than others and other people change up the tempo. This is Joe Satriani's version. I think Joe Nails this timeless classic with an updated rock version.

Bobby Harrison is another incredible ambidextrous guitarist. Bobby Played with Brit Floyd, a Pink Floyd Numbers band. Bobby also has a number of guitar teaching websites. In the web sites, Bobby plays right handed. Here is Bobby Harrison and Brit Floyd playing a Pink Floyd Classic, " Comfortably Numb. " Bobby contributes to the end solo with the other lead guitarist, Damian Darlington. Bobby plays the mid solo at 2:08. Surprisingly, he doesn't bend notes as much as I have seen him do in concert.

With regards to to playing left or right, it hardly matters as long as the lower and upper E strings and everything in between are in the right place. I have a number of Fender Stratocaster's. One in particular has been a test mule of sorts. It has had a variety of pickups in it including single and dual coil and combinations.
It has also had a number of custom wound and potted pickups and run through a variety of amps as well. It currently has 2 humbuckers / dual coils in the neck and bridge position separated by a single coil in the middle position. It has custom push / pull pots and wiring to control phase and cutting out one or both humbuckers to go to a single coil " Strat " sound. These are known as " Coil Taps " in guitar playing circles. With a nice tube amp, muted, warm tones can be coaxed from the guitar for Jazz numbers. It also does well for hard hitting Blues numbers as well.
With the humbucking coils engaged, Harder hitting songs are a breeze. All in all, a very satisfying electric guitar.

Well, both Dick Dale and Albert King, and probably some others, played with the strings in the reverse order, with the bass strings closest to the floor and the treble string closer to the player, which make their ability to play as weel as they did even more impressive. Just take a left-hand strung guitar, turn it over, and try to play it as if it was a right strung guitar; the mental gymnastics to 'transpose' the chord shapes and scales is daunting if you've not started out playing that way. Long ago, I knew a young lady who could play ambidextrously and it never ceased to amaze me; when I asked her if she had a method to her playing, she just shrugged and said, "That's just the way I taught myself"; it kind of falls into the same category as Wes Montgomery when he was asked how he developed his style: "Nobody told me I was playing the wrong way"...
I try not to do a lot of mods to my guitars. Experience has taught me there will be situations where someone will ask you to play and be expecting a certain sound they'd heard you play before, and your usual guitar isn't available; if your sound is heavily dependent on major mods (on-board or active electronics, particular pickups, etc.), then you've got a problem; I much more prefer to find ways to achieve specific sounds mainly through the use of fingers, muting, attack, etc.; look back at players like Hendrix, Beck, etc., whose guitars really weren't all that modded yet they were able to achieve sounds even when they weren't using amp rigs with pedals; someone once remarked that you could give Keith Richards any guitar, from cheap copy to high-end, high-tech axe and, in a couple of minutes, it would sound like Keith Richards; the sound and feel is all in the fingers...

<O>
I had no Idea Dick Dale or Albert King strung their guitars that way. I'm not heavily dependent on any guitar's I have. I often change what guitar is my favorite. Amps are another matter and I much prefer an all tube amp. They are regularly biased to maintain the sound. I also take along an S series Ibanez with Humbuckers in the neck and bridge position separated by a single coil. I also take along an 85 American Standard Stratocaster in Ash with a one piece maple fingerboard / neck.
Frankenstein's monster as I call the modded guitar can sound like either of them and I think the sound has more to do with the amp in conjunction with the pickups. Others have argued that the wood used in the body has more to do with it. In this case, the body is made of Ash. Alder is another great wood. My Ibanez has a mahogany body and sounds great as well.
The Ibanez has a maple neck with a polished ebony fingerboard as does " Frankenstein's monster ". I always liked the vintage 65 Fender twin reverb in the 85 watt configuration. The sound is pure magic. It also has a spring reverb. I also prefer the 65-67 twin reverb amp head so you can match up a speaker cab with Celestion speakers. I like the Sound of various Marshall amps as well and along with Fender amps, remain the gold standard. Dumble Amps are another fantastic guitars and Stevie Ray Vaughan used one owned by Jakson Browne dubbed, " Mother Dumble. " Jackson Browne named it that as it was one of the first Dumble amps built by Howard Dumble. The Dumble amps can fetch an incredible $ 75,000 to $ 125,000, I have heard, which is ridiculous.
Fender sell's a Roland pickup equipped Straocaster guitar. It could be patched into a Roland system and the guitar could be made to sound like anything, including a violin if you knew what you were doing. I think the older Roland Stratocasters were better.

Sandii and the Sunsetz had a huge cult following worldwide in the early 1980s but unfortunately never made the bigtime. They were let down badly by poor promotion and distribution. Which is a shame 'cause Sandii herself is a talented songwriter/singer/dancer, and also a good sort :) .
The last I heard she had her own tv show back in Japan and was very big in the Hula dancing scene. More later - stay tuned.

How about 2 very different approaches to a classic song ? This is Emerson, Lake and Palmer. ( My apologies for the poor video quality but it's a live performance. The audio is excellent. )

This is by the Qater Philharmonic Orchestra using French Horns, Trombones and Trumpets in addition to a drummer playing a fairly simple but progressive drum beat. What's unique about their arrangement is their use of a Tuba and player to play the bass lines. In all, an 11 piece band. They are cool cats for sure.

Here's Sandii treating us to a lovely song and dance. I didn't know "Hula" had gradings like martial arts, She's top tier/black belt standard. :):)
Way back in 1980, some network execs at NBC were trying to cash in on a then current fad for all things Japanese. These guys, who fancied themselves the smartest guys in any room, came up with a variety show idea, with the hosts to be a singing duo at the top of the charts in Japan known as Pink Lady. Here is a sample of there act:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yick1M_StCE
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvPCcfeXI-0
The one thing the network geniuses didn't account for was the fact neither of the Pink Lady singers could speak a word of English. To get around the problem, they hired a standup comedian, Jeff Altman, to co-host and serve as a sort of 'interpreter' for the girls, all in spite of the fact Altmn knew no Japanese. The girls had to learn their lines phonetically; because of this fact, ad-libs were not possible nor any other deviation or alteration of the scripted dialogue. The result was a program where the Japanese hosts tended to look dazed and confused most of the time and the US co-host gamely tried to make the whole mess look at all natural. Th show only lasted 5 weeks and was cancelled; it has also been deemed one of the worst, if not the worst, network TV shows in history...
Here's how the show typically ended, with a hot tub scene (the network guys were all about getting the girls into bikinis), with the participation of Hugh Hefner and a few Playmates...

For some reason, the two main pieces of the sound track stayed on my mind for long time to come.
Sadness and happiness can be so close to each other. Love might be what we want, but life demands compromise and so often we cannot have it. The way in the movie told what it told at this ending stage, was a brilliant, ingenious, elegant trick by screenplay writers. Hard not to feel an emotional echo in yourself after you have seen the full movie. Beautiful. I did not expect this when I switched it on on TV. And then that smiling nod at the end, agreeing: "All is fine. We did it. But I wish I were in his place." Fantastic narration. So much said with so little effort. Good acting. I felt speechless, and a bit devastated and build up again at the same time. Its very easy to underrate this movie. You shouldn't. :03: :yeah: Beautiful. That is cinema at its best: magic.

The Saints along with Radio Birdman kickstarted the music scene revival down here in Australia ending the hippie/glam period. There was a prolific music explosion. Good bands started appearing everywhere. Every decent pub here in Sydney could boast a great band. Good times :)
Some became successful and forgot their roots, most stayed true and burned out. The Civic Hotel and the Grand Hotel used to put on fabulous gigs.

I've been wanting to commend your post of Carol Kaye: like other 'behind the scenes' bass players like James Jamerson of Motown, she was a defining bassist who is much admired by all types of musicians, songwriters, producers, etc. What Tommy Tedesco is to session guitar in the Wrecking Crew, Carol is to session bassists: the standard by which excellence is measured...

EDIT: Early lyrics translation from Reddit
EDIT 2: changed lyrics
We weren't allowed to be part of it.
Nothing to see, talk or hear
But every night for an hour or two.
I've vanished from this world
A little happy every night
My ear very close to the world receiver
[Refrain]
Radio, my radio
I let myself be sucked into the ether
My ears become eyes
Radio, my radio
That's how I hear what I don't see
Silence secretly faraway woe
[Verse 2]
We weren't allowed to be part of it.
Nothing to see, talk or disturb
Every song was forbidden
So dangerous foreign notes
But every night a little happy
My ear very close to the world receiver
[Refrain]
Radio, my radio
I let myself be sucked into the ether
My ears become eyes
Radio, my radio (my radio)
That's how I hear what I don't see
Silence secretly faraway woe
[Bridge]
Every night I secretly rose
On the back of music
Put your ears on your wings
sing softly into one's hands
Every night and fly again
I just walked away with the music
Float so through bright rooms
No borders, no fences.
[Interlude]
radio, radio
radio, radio
[Refrain]
Radio, my radio (my radio)
I let myself be sucked into the ether
My ears become eyes
Radio, my radio (my radio)
That's how I hear what I don't see
Silence secretly faraway woe

I have had three overwhelming live concert experiences in my life: Dido in Hamburg 2003, Martha Argerich, the RSO Berlin under Chailly (and with my father playing in the orchestra :) ) in the Berlin Philharmonic 1982: 3rd piano concert by Rachman inoff, and in summer 1985, the year of my final school exams that christmas, Oscar Peterson again in the Berlin Philharmonic.
To me, the giant of piano jazz, and most excellent on bass: outstanding Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and superb Martin Drew on drums. Maybe the best trio/quartett Peterson ever performed with. The chemistry was just right, perfect harmony was the result.
Instead of the full concert, just this:

Kapitan's "Great Commanders" thread reawakened an interest I've always had re great men and their deeds.
Here's 2 songs by Sabaton "tributeing" ( is there such a word? ) Gustavus Adolphus the human dynamo from the 30 years war. It seems Sabaton has military themed songs for every period sans Napoleonic times. I'm not a big fan of Metal music ( got enough probs without adding concussion to the list ), but the visuals are very nice and well done.

Southern Culture On The Skids (aka SCOTS) has been around for a long time and is sort of the South's version of The Cramps. One of the best R&R/Rockabilly/Surf trios around, they are often overlooked, but many, like myself, have been following them since the early days before they became known for the hit single, Camel Walk.
