^^Good choice. I didn't really know much about Styles, just that he was a member of some 'boy group' (couldn't tell you the name unless I looked it up) and that the young girls went spare when he left whatever group it was, at least according to some of the entertainment news reports I have a vague memory of seeing/hearing; I don't really keep up with the current pop acts. He appeared on Saturday Night Live performing Sign Of The Times; I usually use the time given over to musical acts on the show to do other things, since I don't usually know who the act is or I'm not really interested in the style of music they play, but when I heard the opening verse of this song, I was impressed since I thought, his being from a 'boy group', his work would be some kind of pop fluff. The song is interesting and shows he has deeper influences than most modern performers. The song sounds a bit like George Harrison and John Lennon wrote a song together with Ringo on drums and with Prince and/or Pink Floyd producing, not a bad set of references to draw from for a first solo project. Unexpected, but interesting to these old ears; just goes to show, if ya live long enough, ya learn things...
Thanks Jimbuna, for the great post...

Two of the greatest drummers ever were Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich. Krupa was to drummers what Hendrix was to guitarists. He took the drums from being simple timekeeping to a solid lead instrument. His speed was legendary and his timing impeccable. There is a very famous drum store here in Hollywood directly across from the Musicians Union Local #47 where generations of drummers have gone to buy their kits. There used to be one of Gene Krupa's drum kits mounted on a platform outside the shop, above the front door (a major earthquake some years back forced the store to remove the kit for fear of it falling on someone). A large portrait of Krupa still is on display in the front widow of the store...
Buddy Rich was a true drum prodigy and he would tell you so himself: Johnny Carson once dubbed him "Mr. Humble". Buddy could easily back up the claim; it was common practice for him, when being asked to perform a new number, to not rehearse with the band he would play with until the last minute; he would show up and listen to the band run through the number with a stand-in drummer once or twice, then he would get on the drums and nail it the first time, in his own inimitable style. He was great, he knew it, and, most importantly, he could prove it...
Two great drummers, playing together, with a little help from Sammy Davis, Jr.:

I was walking back home from the post office when I happened to spy a new bronze plaque mounted on the wall of a building here in Hollywood. The plaque was to commemorate the building as the former home of the Wally Heider Recording Studio 3, a legendary place where all manner of major acts recorded; this link gives a listing of some of the artists and albums associated with the place:
https://www.discogs.com/label/1098261-Wally-Heider-Recording-Studio-Los-Angeles
Seeing the plaque got me to thinking about a lot of the other once famous recording studios in Hollywood now gone in this age of compact digital recording. As I tried to recall which ones were gone and which one's were still around, the very famous Gold Star Studio came to mind; I tried to recall when it closed down, but I couldn't pinpoint the year, so I got on the web to look it up; lo, and behold, not only did I find the year, 1984, I also found out the families of the owners of the studio have a web page to commemorate and document the studio's history and importance to music:
http://www.goldstarrecordingstudios.com/
As I read the text of the studio's accomplishments, I came across a rather glaring misstatement:
"The Runaways - The Runaways - (First album by all-female Rock & Roll band)"
My mind immediately woke up the memory of an earlier, by about a decade, all-girl group who released about a half dozen albums before the Go-Go's were even of legal drinking age. The group made a bit of a splash at the time, both for their music and the name of their band, Fanny. (Entering their name in the search engine brought up all manner of non-musical results...). The band was very good and probably a bit before their time; here are a couple of Fanny clips (that somehow doesn't sound quite right):

I'm always amazed when I come across younger kids who have musical gifts in vocals or playing instruments.
This is of 10 year old Toby Lee. This video was taken in Nov 25, 2015 at the Leamington Assembly in England playing with Walter Trout. Toby should now be a veteran at or approaching the age of 12. Here is Toby with Walter Trout. I'm thinking Toby has a bright future in music. :)

Toby takes his cues from Stevie Ray Vaughan so that should sit well with Vienna. :) Toby is playing a Fender Stratocastor made at least to look like Stevie's main guitar which was a 1963 body, with a 1962 neck, and pickups dated from a 1959 Stratocastor.

I am aware of Toby and it is scary how good he is; the Stratocaster is from a US outfit who specializes in custom guitar parts, particularly in pre-aged parts, so, if you want to make your axe look like it's been through a hard life on the road without all the time-consuming and costly travel, or if you want a reproduction of, say, Jimi's Monterey Pop guitar (pre-flaming end), they're your guys. The site is interesting to browse through:

I'm not surprised that you knew of Toby Lee. You are in tune with the music scene more than most people. Toby is a rare talent and I hope he does well. I also wasn't aware of the site that you provided the links for. It's harder to get ash bodied guitars as the emerald ash borer beetle has decimated ash trees. Ash bodied guitars are light weight, strong and to my ears, have a bright tone. Fender makes their premium guitars of Alder or ash and mahogany if requested of their custom shop. Cheaper guitars in the Fender line are made of basswood and other lesser woods.
I would rather buy a Fender Standard for about $ 700 for a great, functional guitar rather than pay $ 1500-1600 for something that looks like a Stevie Ray guitar. You can also assemble quality parts and build a custom guitar for less money. Stevie Ray's brother, Jimmie Lee Vaughan is in possession of Stevie Ray's # 1 and allowed a team from the Fender Custom shop to take it apart to record it's exact dimensions. Fender than created and marketed a Stevie ray Tribute Stratocastor.

I've always been partial to Strats; I like the feel of them and the ease of play; I also kinda like Teles, but not as much as Strats; just a bit too 'trebly'. Never really got into Les Pauls; had one once but the 1994 Northridge Earthquake 'ate' it; they feel a bit too 'chunky' to me and I feel I get a lot more versatility out of a Strat, although the Gibson double cutaway SG and the semi-hollow 335/355s are very good instruments; its just that using a Les Paul feels more like wearing a Les Paul: bulky. I also like to sand down the gloss finish on the back of the guitar necks to a satin finish, for better touch and control...
I don't know if I'm really all that much in tune with the music scene, anymore; I may be in a flatted 3rd or 5th. My days of devouring every music publication that came my way are behind me and time has made my random access memory more random of late...
...What was I saying, and, where are my glasses?...
Susan Tedeschi has been a name for almost two two decades, that I know of; there used to be a DJ on a major local blues radio program who played her recordings way back before the rest of the main music world heard of her. She is a very fine musician, singer, and songwriter; she's been around for a while, and, God willing and the creek don't rise, she'll be around for a very good while longer. Good pick...

Then there's Bill Wyman, who was so stone faced and immobile on stage that, shortly before he retired from the Stones, during a live show, when he walked across the stage while playing, he absolutely shocked the rest of the band. Wyman was so stoic, he made Mount Rushmore look animated...
Jimi Hendrix played the Fillmore East with his Band Of Gypsies in 1970 and Bill Graham was the promoter for the show; also, the Fillmore East was Graham's own venue. There was a bit of a disagreement between Hendrix and Graham when Bill said Jimi he was such a great artist he shouldn't fall back on theatrics and stage tricks to enhance his music. Hendrix took some offense at the remarks and went out and performed his set by literally just standing in one spot and playing, no frills or gimmicks. The story of the show, and what Jimi said to Graham is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t51MHUENlAQ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdSU-9hOg5U
The previous clip for Tennessee Flat Top Box is because I heard it in the background of some TV show I was watching a bit ago. It is a song I have always liked from the first time I heard it over 50 years ago...
Johnny's daughter, Roseanne Cash, had a rather strained relationship with her father, marked by lack of communication. In the late 80s, Roseanne recorded an album of classic country songs she had heard and liked and Tennessee Flat Top Box was one of the songs on the album; it was only after she recorded the song she found out the song was not an old standard, in public domain song, but had actually been written by her father, Johnny Cash. Her recording of the song caused her to take a greater interest in her father's works and the both of them came to reconcile because of it. When Johnny passed away to rejoin his beloved June Carter Cash, Roseanne sang the song at a memorial concert...

Great tune Vienna. I would know the smooth sound of that Saxophone playing song anywhere.
There was a time when I heard this song everywhere but had no idea who did the original. Harlem Nocturne was featured in the movie " Christine " and also on the the Mickey Spillane's series, Mike Hammer, featuring Stacy Keach but The Viscounts version is the original and the best.

I grew up in the 50s and 60s hearing Harlem Nocturne on the jazz radio stations and from the outdoor speakers of a burlesque theater in San Francisco. There used to be a common practice of theaters of all kinds, movie, live, burlesque, etc. to play the audio from whatever was playing in the theater on outdoor speakers as a means of luring in passersby; for movie theaters, this meant playing the audio tracks of the films. I remember there used to be a grindhouse theater directly adjacent to the cable car turntable at Powell and Market Streets in San Francisco where I would listen to the soundtracks of the films and, occasionally, they would be showing some sort of Russ Meyer film (I definitely remember The Immoral Mr. Teas ran there for a long time), which led to some very interesting reactions from the passersby. The burlesque theater I refer to was in the Mission District and the bus stop for transferring between lines was right next to the front entrance. Back then, they still used small live combos to provide musical backing for the dancers, so, while waiting for the bus, I got to hear a lot of the old standards played live. As I grew older, I got to know a few of the musicians who would take their breaks out front; I even got on friendly terms with a couple of the comics who would emcee and provide filler between acts (the girls very rarely came outside; IIRC, there were some sort of legal enjoinders prohibiting them from being outside the theaters and clubs). Oddly, even when I became of legal age (back then, it was twenty-one years), I never actually went into the place when it was open, although I did patronize a lot of other similar establishments. Ah, wasted youth... :03:
Here's something for all you "sax fiends"...
There were songs that were staples of the burlesque trade and arguably, one of the most famous was Honky Tonk by Bill Doggett, a number featured in probably more striptease scenes in movies and TV than probably any other; it is also one of the best instrumentals ever. The full number exceeded the maximum length for 78 and 45 RPM discs of the day, so it was divided up into 'Part 1 & Part 2', fading out in the middle on the first side then fading back up on the second side:

One thing I've heard over the many years from various sources is how guitarists in rock, blues and R&B try to emulate the sounds of either horns, primarily sax, or harp (harmonica) players. If you listen to a lot of the better known guitar players, you can see the strength of the argument; in the documentary/concert film about his life and career, Hail, Hail, Rock & Roll, Chuck Berry very openly acknowledges the very significant influence the horn sections of the Forties Big Bands had on his guitar style and sound. In terms of emotive power, range, and the ability to go from quietly seductive to ferociously raucous, the guitar, horn, and harp lead the pack...

Patsy is often imitated but never duplicated and her voice and music is timeless. Like the best artists, Patsy's voice is instantly recognizable. Willie Nelson wrote this song for Patsy and she recorded it making it one of her best known songs.

The above was the original version; an interesting note is the band, Ronnie and The Daytonas, formed in Nashville, TN, not a spot known for surfing; I guess they can be given a pass considering none of the original Beach Boys could surf...
GTO brought to mind The GTOs, a group out of here in Los Angeles mentored by Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart. The all-girl group was comprised of several well-known and famous groupies in the LA scene; Pamela Des Barres, of I'm With The Band book fame is probably the best known of the band. THE GTO stood for "Girls Together Outrageously", which they were in real life; I recall seeing them in and about Hollywood; I actually gave one of them a lift when I saw her hitchhiking on Sunset Blvd. in the 70s; she seemed a bit disoriented, a condition I wrote off as a result of recent 'substance ingestion'...
The GTOs only recorded one album, Permanent Damage, and it has become something of a collectors item since it had a number of well-known musicians aside from Zappa and Capt. Beefheart, including Lowell George, Jeff Beck, and Ry cooder, among others...

I had never heard this before but it sounds a lot like the Ventures. The Ventures were a great band and their style and music has been copied a great deal.
Almost all the surf bands came up around the same time, ca. 1958-1965, and they all seem to lay claim to being the first, but, as with many types of 'ground-level' music styles, like punk, rap, hip-hop, etc., it is difficult to pinpoint a true origin; the style seems to have grown organically, without a single influence point that can be cited in other styles, e.g., citing Chuck Berry as the starting point for R&R guitar styles. As noted before, with Ronnie & the Daytonas, surf seems to have come from everywhere; the Daytonas were out of Nashville, the Ventures were out of the Pacific Northwest, neither place known as hotbeds of actual surfing. Who copied who and what was the epicenter of surf still remain as arguable points...
Now to something less arguable, today, June 1, is the 50th anniversary of the release of The Beatles landmark classic groundbreaking album (think that covers most of the adjectives), Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. (And, yes, Steve, I know it was leaked/released about a week earlier in the UK, but the really wide release was June 1, 1967. :03:) To say the album was a major sensation at the time of its release and a continuing influence on all genres of music is a bit of an understatement. The album was played on just about every type of radio station, rock, Top 40, underground, etc., operating at the time. Publications, from Time to The Christian Science Monitor to highly respected musical journals all weighed in on the impact of the album. Most albums are just product; Pepper was an event. I remember you couldn't walk through San Francisco or Los Angeles without hearing some part of the album playing on radios in all sorts of places. The album just seemed to strike a chord with people of all generations and types. There really hasn't been a work of music since then with the same impact and scope and, given the current state of music, in general, it may be a long time before another work equals or exceeds Pepper...
Here's a clip of an early recording of the backing track for the opening of Pepper with The Beatles playing live:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLlWIfKO0sU
Here is an interesting breakdown of the tracks on the opening song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-wXZ5-Yxuc
To further underscore the impact of Pepper in its time, here is a clip of a performer who was just coming up and would, in his own work, go on to be a major musical pioneer and influence, himself; he had just gotten a copy of Pepper and was so blown away by the album, he played a bit of the opening during his live performance that night, and he would often play this number in his live concerts throughout his sadly short career:

Indeed. One thing that still amazes me about this album is that two of the best songs songs recorded during those sessions were not included on the album. They were released as singles and were both big hits with extensive airplay. Had they been included on the album they would have in my opinion change the dynamics of the record and made it even more 'ground breaking'.

I agree about how great the double-A-sided single was, but I really can't think of where the songs would fit into Pepper as it was finally released; The Beatles were well-known to be very specific about the order of the songs on their albums. US album releases were modified and song order, inclusion/exclusion, did not follow The Beatles original wishes, a very major reason the band went on to form Apple Records in order to assure their total control over their art. Although it was common practice not to include songs released as singles in the UK on UK albums, if The Beatles really wanted to include Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane on Pepper, they most probably would have gotten their way; they were truly the "800 pound gorillas" at Parlophone. I have always viewed Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane as a sort of encapsulation of the Lennon/McCartney musical dichotomy; Penny Lane is textbook McCartney, a sort of Tin Pan Alley, sing-song, please everybody song; Strawberry Fields was very much Lennon, impressionistic, alternately melodic and discordant, challenging and self-expressing: two sides of the same coin. McCartney's discomfort with the musical styles and directions of Lennon and Harrison are well-known and documented, but The Beatles are truly a prime example of the old saying about the whole exceeding the sum of its parts...
One thing I forgot to add about the Hendrix clip: the gig was on June 4. 1967, three days after the official release of Pepper and, in the audience, were two big Hendrix fans -- Paul McCartney and George Harrison...
It would be one of his first gigs in London. Jimi was a sweetie, a very nice guy. I remember him opening at the Saville on a Sunday night, 4 June 1967. Brian Epstein used to rent it when it was usually dark on the Sunday. Jimi opened, the curtains flew back and he came walking forward, playing 'Sgt. Pepper', and it had only been released on the Thursday so that was like the ultimate compliment. It's still obviously a shining memory for me, because I admired him so much anyway, he was so accomplished. To think that that album had meant so much to him as to actually do it by the Sunday night, three days after the release. He must have been so into it, because normally it might take a day for rehearsal and then you might wonder whether you'd put it in, but he just opened with it. It's a pretty major compliment in anyone's book. I put that down as one of the great honours of my career. I mean, I'm sure he wouldn't have thought of it as an honour, I'm sure he thought it was the other way round, but to me that was like a great boost.

There's no music in this post, so sorry if I indulge a bit about something that's been on my mind lately. About week ago, I found out someone who was little-known to those outside the LA/Hollywood music scene but who was a rather prominent figure for decades within the scene passed away at the age of 93 years. His name was Mario Maglieri and he was one of the founders of The Whisky-A-Go-Go club, The Roxy Theater, and The Rainbow Bar & Grill, all on one block on the fabled Sunset Strip. Here are a few of the obituaries written about Mario:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4479090/Whiskey-owner-Mario-Maglieri-died-age-93.html
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/09/arts/music/mario-maglieri-dead-ran-whisky-a-go-go.html?_r=0
http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/la-me-mario-maglieri-20170505-story.html
http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/mario-maglieri-sunset-strips-rainbow-owner-dead-at-93-w480821
As you can see from the above, Mario was known from the UK to NYC to SF and more. I had the great privilege of meeting and knowing Mario back in the mid 70s when he opened the Rainbow. I used to go to the Whisky quite often and the Roxy occasionally (they were all in about a half block of space on the same side of the street), so, when the Rainbow opened, it was only natural it would become the preferred place to eat and hang. On nights bands were playing at the Whisky or the Roxy, there would be a line waiting to get in the Rainbow. One night, a group of friends and myself were waiting in line. Mario would often come outside the Rainbow and chat with the people who were waiting; on that night he stopped and spent a few minutes just shooting the breeze with us. We were surprised when he told us we shouldn't have to wait and he proceeded to pull us out of the line and walked us up to the front door and told the doorman/bouncer to let us in at once; we thanked him and went in to enjoy a meal of the Rainbow's famous pizza...
Some nights later, I was in the Rainbow line again, alone, and Mario came out, saw me, and again insisted I go in immediately. This happened a few more times when I was either alone or with friends. He even let us into the upstairs VIP area, a coveted place in the local music scene. My friends and myself began to speculate that perhaps Mario mistakenly thought were we some sort of celebrities or band members. I really began to feel guilty about the situation and I finally approached him and said "Mario, I think you may be mistaking me and my friends for something we're not. You know, I'm nobody." Marion gave me a smile, patted me on the shoulder, and said, "Kid, everybody's somebody. You just enjoy."...
I had a lot of good times at the Rainbow and had quite a few good chats with Mario. There are so many people who are part of the fabric of the history of Rock music, who are little known outside the scene, but who are every bit the heart and soul of the music; they may not pick up a guitar, bang a drum, sing a song, or sell millions of records, but their presence means as much to the scene as those who do; Mario was very much a part of the heart and soul of the Strip and meant very much to those who were there and knew him...
I still think I'm very much of a nobody, but you, Mario, you were very, very much a somebody. Thank you and rest in a very well-deserved peace...

Very good choice! The Stranglers are a much overlooked band. An interesting note: The Stranglers lost a chance to break big in the US due to a very unfortunate coincidence. They were scheduled to do a major showcase performance at the Whisky-A-Go-Go; all the major players in the music industry as well as the music press were to be in attendance. Just prior to the gig, the news was filled with stories of a series of grisly murders in the Los Angeles area; the press dubbed the serial killers "The Hillside Stranglers". There was then a big problem for the Whisky: could they actually put up on the marquee, in big letters "The Stranglers"? The question was debated; some thought it was in poor taste with the serial killers still at large; others tried to frame it in a sort of punk "anything goes" act of rebellion. The marquee went up, very reluctantly, but the damage in terms of PR had been done and the band never really recovered, in the US, from the fallout...

That is a very interesting mix they made there. Nice tune. Reverb on the bongo / congas / percussion, then a very dry drum, bass and electric piano, very "up front" even, reverb on other things... cool cat beatnik was he?... Probably took after his mom...
Same song, three different takes...
Original version -- Kai Winding almost exclusively did instrumental recordings; this rare recording has a "family affair" of backing singers: Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney) and her nieces, Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick...

I remember when The Beatles Revolver came out and how it was a major shift in the way popular music was evolving. The whole album was one departure after another from the "Top 40/Mop Top" Beatles tunes up until then. Along with George Harrison's Taxman, it was John Lennon's album ending number, Tomorrow Never Knows, that threw open the doors to what would become Sgt. Pepper; Paul may have come up with the concept, but it was John and George that gave it its sound. The rumors at the time were Paul really hated John's song out of fear it would alienate loyal fans and upset their hit-making gravy train; Paul relented mainly to mollify John, who was showing early signs of wanting to do his own "thing", and keep peace in the group; Paul greatly underestimated the sophistication of the fans and the importance of John's 'experiments'...
What is truly remarkable is how the band was able to create such a song with equipment and technology that was extremely primitive by today's standards. All they had available were massive analog 4-track reel-to-reel tape machines; today's musicians who record have an almost infinite number of tracks available to them on digital software they can carry around on their laptops. Compared to now, The Beatles were making the equivalent of woodblock prints...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGeF5RxlpaI
The influence of Tomorrow Never Knows shows up in the 1999 Chemical Brothers' number, Let Forever Be; the closeness of this homage to The Beatles' own composition was so close, lawyers for the surviving Beatles and Yoko sent letters to the Chemical Brothers alleging illegal sampling of the original number, an allegation later proven false; still, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery...

Erratum. Not Mozart but Rossini. I got me meds mixed up.
Today, 16 June, is the 50th anniversary of the beginning of a three-day event marking a turning point in rock and pop music history. In the then sleepy little seaside village and scenic tourist spot of Monterey, California, about 120 miles south of San Francisco, the very first major rock/pop music festival was held from 16 June to 18 June 1967. Monterey had been the site of a few jazz and folk festivals, but they were low-key events. The time also was the beginning of San Francisco's "Summer Of Love" and the height of the Hippie period. By a strange bit of irony, the festival was the brainchild of two Los Angeles music scene notables, John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas and Lou Adler, record producer and LA live venue impresario; they were further aided by Derek Taylor, close friend and press officer to The Beatles. The event was organized as a charity and all of the performers, with the exception of Ravi Shankar, played for free and the organizers paid for their travel and accommodations. To further cover the costs, the festival was filmed and recorded with an eye towards a possible feature-length film release and/or album release(s). A film, Monterey Pop, was released and a number of the performances have been released in various forms. The festival was overshadowed by later, flashier rock festivals, but Monterey was the first and the archetype...
Tickets to the festival ranged from about US$3.00 to about US$8.00. For those staggeringly high prices, festival-goers got to see some of the best acts, across a number of genres; this is a link to the set lists for all three days:
http://www.setlist.fm/festival/1967/monterey-pop-festival-1967-53d6bba1.html
For three of the acts, the festival would be the springboard for the beginning of their stardom; Here are their landmark performances:

(Sorry about the Vimeo link; there were no complete clips on YT...)...
Incidentally, the proceeds from the festival were, indeed, used to benefit many charities and causes, among them The Los Angeles Free Clinic, who had just opened their doors in 1967; the money donated by the festival saved the struggling clinic, and today, five decades later, the clinic and its branches are still going strong. On the wall of one of the clinic waiting rooms is a 5 x 15 foot mural, donated by Lou Adler, of the performers at the Monterey Pop Festival:
