I remember when The Airplane's original came out and some radio stations wouldn't play it because of the lyrics; there was one Southern station whose program director was interviewed on TV and when asked about why he was banning the song he cited the line "Feed your head"; asked what he thought the line meant, he said 'I don't know, but it sounds drug-like...'...

Here is more from the singer, Emiliana Torrini...

"Interstellar" - Ross Bugden.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-_jrZDRvJg

A collection of saved and restored paintings/murals/frescoes etc from Nero's Magnificent Golden House. Saved by Artists working on the spot, when the place was newly discovered, and before they crumbled/faded/disappeared forever.

There's still traces left but.....sad.

I reckon Nero got a raw deal in History and wasn't the villain he's portrayed as being ( Hollywood and various Classical/Ecclesiastical writers notwithstanding ).

He wasn't a "warmonger", and was heavily into Culture/Music etc. But he made powerful enemies amongst the ruling elite, and they hounded him to his suicide. Creating a power vacuum and the year of the 4 emperors.

His successors defamed him bigtime. And built the ugly Coliseum ( a place of pain and suffering ) on the largely demolished Golden House.

What a contrast.

I envy you Kai/Catfish... you've been there...if you go there again and happen to bump into Nero's ghost, please shake his hand for me. :)

Strange, but true, fact: lead singer Ronnie had a prolonged romantic attachment with a musician from a band appearing on the same bills as the Ronnettes; In his autobiography, Life, Keith Richards writes at length about he and Ronnie spending a lot of time in the 1960s in each other's company on the road and were very close. Now, when I started to read the chapter, I was skeptical of Keith's claim, but there in the book is an acknowledgement, with corroborating quotes from Ronnie, herself. I guess the heart does indeed want what the heart wants...

It sure is a haunting building.. thanks for the nice video of the "Golden House" :)

The film with Peter Ustinov as Nero is nice as a film and art, but has nothing to do with reality; they did it all wrong.

Yes LA is a wonderful place full of variety of blacks, whites, orientals, Mexicans, South Americans ... you name it.

In fact you can drive for miles and miles in one section of LA from Watts to the Forum and see nothing, but black people. :yep:

Donut shops like that one are usually owned by orientals and they like to fry chicken in their fryers, but they don't sell the chicken ... they eat it.

So when you buy donuts from them the donuts taste like chicken :o

I'd wanted to post this for a while...

In February of 2020, lead guitarist/vocalist for the band Gang Of Four, Andy Gill, passed away at the age of 64 from complications of pneumonia. In addition to being a member of Gang Of Four, he was a well-respected record producer who produced albums for artists such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Stranglers, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, and many others. He had a unique guitar style and stage presence:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUt6Mrrp27U

This is, perhaps, the Gang Of Four's best known track:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHVI5fAzWq0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syHuEkAe5PE

I really liked Gang Of Four ever since I heard their first single way back long ago and I really liked Andy Gill's style of guitar playing. He was a sight to see, either standing stone still, with an expression on his face as if he was about to explode, or stalking the stage with grim determination. He was unique and uniquely talented...

RIP, belatedly, Andy Gill, and thanks for all the great music and sounds...

Once again,beat to the mark...

I had been wanting to post a Kenny Burrell clip for a while, but kept putting it off; this clip is a number covered by Stevie Ray Vaughn; much has been made of SRV being influenced by Hendrix, the 3 Kings (Albert, BB, Freddie), and Buddy Guy, among others, but this clip shows really how much SRV was also influenced by Kenny Burrell:

Something just occurred to me: if someone, not knowing who Les Paul was, has approached him and asked him what kind of guitar he was playing, would he have answered, "Its a 'Me'"...?...

Les Paul is well known as the originator of recording techniques such as tape delay/echo, phasing, flanging (way before John Lennon stumbled across the technique with the Beatles) and, most importantly, multi-tracking or, as some refer to it incorrectly, overdubbing. There has been a huge rise in what has been called looping lately and the advances in technology have made the practice incredibly easy and incredibly inexpensive; nowadays, you can buy a very decent looping unit for less than USD $50.00 on E-Bay. The principle is simple: the musician plays a phrase, activates the looper and, as the phrase is played, it is recorded; the player then saves the recording, which is then played back in a loop, and the player then plays a second part over the loop recording; some units actually offer the option of layering loops over each other, creating an effect similar to studio multi-tracking. Les Paul actually invented a looping device for live performances way back in the 1950s; he had a series of tape decks stashed backstage hooked up to the venues sound system that was controlled remotely by a "black box" attached to the body of his guitar; for a very long time, the mysterious "black box" stymied audiences trying to figure out how he got so much sound out of one guitar:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sx1YW8SEygo

Today's musicians owe a huge debt to the creativity, inventiveness, and artistry that was Les Paul...

I'm not a big jazz fan but I do dabble occasionally, especially the guitarists. One thing I love about jazz albums recorded in the 50's and 60's is the sound. Non of the modern digital brittleness just that pure analog sound. Very soothing in these troubed times.

...

I also have a bit of a liking for jazz; my hometown of San Francisco has long been a famed jazz hub; when I was a kid, my dad brought home to me one of those then new-fangled transistor radios from one of his voyages to Japan; I used to listen to the radio, hidden under my pillow in bed, and, like a lot of other kids, scour the dial to find and hear all the different kinds of music; there was one jazz station i like to listen to and that is where I first heard all those great recording by those great musicians, some who were already legends and some who soon would be...

One of the DJs on the jazz station was a guy known as Sylvester; he would later shorten his name and find fame as Sly Stone...

Another jazz guitar great, considered by many to be the 'father of Electric Guitar' is Charlie Christian. Like Hendrix, Christian burst on the music scene, produced some of the most innovative sounds and techniques in early electric guitar playing, and, like Hendrix passed away after only a few years of fame. Hendrix also cited Charlie Christian as a major influence. Christian was a member of Benny Goodman's musical enterprises, playing in both Goodman's big bands and his smaller combos. Prior to Christian, guitarist in big bands played mainly acoustic, unamplified guitars , barely being heard above the louder instruments; they also tended to play "comp" (accompaniment) in the bands, strumming chords and rarely playing lead lines, due to their low volume. Christian got his gig with Goodman due to a bit of trickery done by the great recording producer, John Hammond; Hammond had tried to get Goodman to hire Christian, but Goodman wasn't interested; it didn't help that Christian had a rather poor private audition, outside of a band setting with Goodman; the story goes that Hammond was able to get a better sort of 'audition' for Christian when he took him to a club where Goodman's big band was playing and snuck him onto the bandstand; when Charlie began to play, Goodman was at first very annoyed; Goodman even tried to sabotage Christian's playing by having his band play a number he didn't think Christian could handle, but he not only was able to keep up, he played so well and with such creativity, Goodman extended the number to about a half an hour to see just how good Christian really was; when he realized just how great a musician Christian was in a full band setting, he immediately hired him after the show and the rest is, as they say, history...

This is a shorter version of the number Goodman tried to use to trip up Christian..

From the Album "Brickus Norvegicus" :)

A pity there's not some of their early stuff.

There's a GREAT music video of a 1978 live open air concert version of "Nice n Sleazy" with strippers ( beautiful ones too !!! ) , but I'm pretty sure it can't be posted here.

They always put on a good show but were "hated" ( professional jealousy ??? ) by their peers. Nothing new there ;)

The Stranglers had a real bad bit of misfortune when they did their first US tour; one of their gigs was at the legendary Whisky-A-Go-Go here in LA; it was booked long in advance, however, when the band got to LA, it was right in the midst of a city-wide panic over the infamous Hillside Strangler murder spree; the moment the Whisky put up the group's name on the marquee, there was an instant backlash and uproar; some people even tried to accuse The Stranglers of booking the gig to capitalize on the tragic murders as a publicity stunt; IIRC, the Whisky did take the name off the marquee, but the damage was done by that time...

Worldwide, in different cities, regular citizens have been making daily public tributes to the brave people who are facing the Covid-19 crisis as first responders and medical staff; in New York City, at 7:00 PM, people open their windows and applaud, cheer, and make noise as a show of support; I found this posted to YT...

That clip brought back a lot of memories; it is from a TV Special Bowie did for the US weekly late night music program, Midnight Special in 1973; it was filmed in Soho at the Marquee Club, an old haunt of Bowie's; there were problems with the production since Bowie, who by this time was more used to live gigs in large arenas and venues, seemed to have forgotten just how small the Marquee actually was; it also had a rather low ceiling and made some of the hoped for cinematic effects Bowie desired difficult if not impossible...

Bowie's band included Mick Ronson and a couple of other holdovers from the Spiders From Mars band Bowie had broken up a few months before, Guests on the show included The Troggs and Marianne Faithful. The bit of dialogue between Bowie and Amanda Lear is actually a slightly modified recitation of the first meeting of Alice and The Caterpillar from Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland book...

The song, Sorrow, appeared on Bowie's Pin Ups, an album of song covers of titles Bowie admired and enjoyed as a fan; Bowie's cover of Sorrow was based on the 1966 recording by The Merseys (formerly The Merseybeats) on which studio musicians played including one half of the future Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones), and future Cream bassist, Jack Bruce...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wcVH7fOY8s

The Merseys' recording was itself a cover; the song was originally recorded by the US band, The McCoys, in 1965; it was B-side on the McCoys' second single; The MCCoys had a hit with the song Hang On Sloopy; notable on this recording of Sorrow: the guitarist is Rick Derringer who would later go on to have a solo hit with the song Rock And Roll, Hoochie Koo; Derringer and the McCoys evolved into Johnny Winter's backing group, And, as in Johnny Winter And...

You live long enough and, if you spend a large part of your early life absorbing music magazines and talking with musicians, there's a good chance you pick up a bit or two...

The Cat Stevens song Morning Has Broken: there was a local LA Rock radio station from the 60s thru the 90s that started each new broadcast day by playing the opening few lyrics of the song, "Morning has broken..." followed by a series of loud crashing and banging sounds; always made me smile...

Thinking about Bowie's 1980 Floor Show, I looked up on YT if there might be a posting of the whole show, and there is, and more; one of the postings is an eight (8) hour long post of what appears to be not only the show itself, but also a whole lot of raw footage, rehearsals, and outtakes; there is one comprised solely of footage of just Bowie and Marianne Faithful; if the lock down lasts any longer, I may take a slog through watching the whole thing...

There are a lot of posts of segments of the program and some highlighting a song or performer; this is what appears to be the closest to the broadcast performance and closest to what I remember seeing in 1973; what is missing are the performances by the guest stars on the bill like the Troggs, and others; the quality is VHS-like, so you've been warned:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvwySPk6IB0

From what I recall was reported at the time, the filming was a bit of an ordeal since the size of the stage required striking each set, repositioning lights, cameras, etc., between takes rather than the usual single set concert setup; time was also spent retaking flubs; since Bowie approached the performance as an art gig, all the setups were done and redone until he was satisfied with the result; for both performers and audience, it was a long, long shoot...

Now, what I do like about this one is you see the guitar switch from the Ricky to the Paul. That's when you know JC Fogerty is playing a guitar tuned to D-G-C-F-A-D, a whole step down from Tommy Fogerty's standard-tuned guit-box. ~That's~ what helps get that CCR sound. I'm trying to find new stuff ( there's a lot of familiar music videos I'm sure we all know and love ) but something fresh??........

The French Indochina period has a lot of Newsreel stuff and haunting ballads but putting them together is beyond my skills :wah: Quite moving sad stuff too.

Not sure about speakers blasting out Wagner during combat.....maybe Artistic License.....maybe "Psych" units did.

A colourful era for sure. I missed the draft by one year, I tried to sign up to train as a Navy pilot ( we had Skyhawks then - Australia ), but failed the Medical. I would've gone to 'Nam for sure - no fear - and not everyone sees combat.

Hell I've been shot here in civilian life. War is safer .....sometimes.

When i was in Goettingen there was a young guy who could play the guitar like nothing i had ever heard before.. in the inner court on the lawn of our hall/dorm(?), used to play together with a friend of mine, beginning with the limehouse blues, and then developing it into the most beautiful variants and new melodies. Played acoustic and then switched to a Les Paul, wish now i would have recorded that. Unfortunately he became a lawyer and gave up playing.

The young ladies in the video are all studio musicians who formed their own group a while back; the times I have been in a studio, the other musicians never looked like those ladies; probably why I didn't enjoy studios...

I didn't know about this instrument before, but I found out about it when I saw this clip of a cover of Little Wing played on a guitar-like instrument called a Sape from Borneo; it is actually carved out of single piece of wood so the neck is not set in or bolted on; the back of the instrument is hollowed out as a sort of sound chamber; you might notice the frets don't go all the way across the neck; the strings are set up much like a sitar with the strings nearest the player being drone strings and the ones over the fret carrying the melody; the frets also, on this version, go all the way to very near the bridge...

I never was a real techno fan, but this was even before techno, though Yello also did such stuff in the 1970ies and 80ies.
Anne Clark, saw her hypnotising performances two times live in Germany, one open air concert, liked it. Seems to be the last extra here ..

How times flies when you're an old so and so, like me.

1977 at the start and 1984 ( the big scary Big Brother year ) at the end.

Well 1984 came and went and apart from Halley's Comet ( which I couldn't see for the life of me ) not a lot happened. :) Mind you I remember reading a few things happening in the paper just a few years later.

^ The drum sound in the Buffalo Springfield recording isn't actually a drum kit; the band had recorded the track originally in one studio but were unhappy with the drum sound, so they took the tapes to Gold Star Studios, the place where a slew of very important artists recorded, like all of Phil Spector's famed productions and The Beach Boys, who recorded a great many of their early hits including the album Pet Sounds; Springfield were still not pleased with the drum sound using a normal kit setup, so one of the studio's owners took a guitar, wrapped it in paper, got a bass (kick) drum (playing the foot pedal with his hand) and played the two as percussion for the track; the result was Buffalo Springfield's first hit record...

(Love Grows - Edison Lighthouse)...

I remember hearing this the first time on holiday in England as a kid, i think it was in Perranporth

I once dated a girl who said I ruined this song for her; we were listening to the radio in the car when the song came on and I said "Ah, the fertilizer song." She asked me "What do you mean?" I said "The lyrics 'Love grows where Rosemary goes...', its obviously about fertilizer..." She thought for a moment, got a disgusted look on her face and said "Ruined. Now every time I'll hear that song, I'll think: fertilizer..."...

@Jimbuna...

Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel!! There's some names I haven't heard in a long, long while: they kind of came into the attention of the Glam Rock scene here in LA back in the mid-70s on Bowie's coattails; I don't think they had a US national following, but they were known and followed here in LA and a few other US scenes; this is the song I best remember them by:

There seems to be a sort of rite of passage for rock guitar players when they are starting out; in the 50s and early 60s, you weren't considered a good player unless you had fully mastered the catalog of Chuck Berry licks; in the mid-60s, being able to accurately play Clapton's Cream-era licks got you the nod; nowadays, it seems, you don't get the imprimatur unless you are able to play Hendrix licks, particularly being able to play Little Wing and/or Voodoo Child (Slight Return); I've seen an awful lot of guitarists on YT, and elsewhere, trying to play Voodoo Child, in particular, but I've always been fascinated by just how many musicians have tried to play the song on instruments other than electric guitar; I found these two examples just recently; the first is a version on solo standup bass that has a sort of jazz feel to the performance; the second is played on an acoustic 12-string guitar and has an impressive rural blues tone, giving yet another example of the blues underpinnings of Hendrix's music...
