Lost in millions for a country's pride
But they never mention the trenches of Belgium
When they stopped fighting and they were one

HOW TO OPEN THE SHOW AT HISTORY'S LARGEST IMPROMPTU GATHERING BY DEFAULT, 400,000+- PEOPLE :RICHIE HAVENS: Richie Havens opened the Woodstock festival, even though he wasn’t scheduled to go on until later in the evening. Heavy traffic had prevented the opening acts from arriving at the festival, and festival organizers convinced him to take the stage around 5:15 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rynxqdNMry4&t=315s) p.m. on Friday afternoon. The other acts were still stuck in the traffic, so Havens performed several encores, playing “every song he knew.” Searching for another song to sing, he began strumming, getting into a groove, when the word “Freedom” came to mind. He sang his now-famous song “Freedom” for the first time, on stage at Woodstock, making the words up as he played. He later told the story of having to see the movie “Woodstock,” so that he could hear how the song went so he could perform it again.

I've been meaning to thank you for posting the above video; I had seen the guitarist for Screaming Females in a YT posting quite some time ago, but, with my declining memory, I forgot her name or the name of her group; your posting has given me the chance to seek out more of her works. She is Marissa Paternoster and she is an impressive guitarist with a unique feel for the instrument; she makes interesting choices in her leads and plays more to the song than to being a 'guitar god(ess)'. She actually has two gigs, one as lead singer and guitarist for the trio Screaming Females, and as a solo artist under the name Noun. This is a live version of the above track, showcasing Marissa's guitar chops:

With the previous post noting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock in mind, here is an iconic performance that lived on far beyond the music of the other acts and sort of became part of the post-Vietnam culture:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jr9xXW5UpkU
The very last performer was Hendrix and this instrumental, Villanova Junction, with the accompanying scenes of the festival's aftermath, is poignant:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQwwxiBjLzI
I'm posting this video of Sha Na Na at Woodstock because they were allowed to play only by the intercession of Hendrix, who was a fan of the group, and his wish that they play before his closing performance:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXLsMszmQpA
...and here's the story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlmzIk4-ESk
I have a particular appreciation for Sha Na Na, from my days bartending at a rock club. At one point, I was worried about making my rent for the next month; a couple of before nights before rent day, three of the members of Sha Na Na, two of them being the guys in the gold lamé suits, along with a few of the band's management, came into the club; Sha Na Na wasn't exactly very high on the 'cool scale' with the patrons of the club, so they were given a bit of the cold shoulder by the denizens. I always had (and still do have) the attitude of treating people cordially unless they prove to be deserving of otherwise. They stayed for a few hours and left. As I was straightening up the bar, one of the management guys came back in and called me over to the end of the bar; he said the Sha Na Na guys appreciated the way I served them and they asked the manager to give me a good tip; the guy handed me a $100 bill, a very big tip in the mid-70s. Seeing as my rent was $125 a month at the time, my worries were over; I've have always remembered their generosity and class...

Cool beans, I think he done blew up the microphone. :arrgh!:
Rumble is one of the archetypal R&R guitar recordings of all time. I remember, as a young kid, hearing the number on the radio and being captivated by the sound of that guitar and the overall feeling of menace in the mood. I remember the older kids really liked the record, but our school frowned upon it as being "JD" (juvenile delinquent) music; it was never banned in San Francisco, and it wasn't until years later I learned it was banned in other cities. This Wikipedia article has some interesting information:
Rumble (instrumental) --
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumble_(instrumental)
The number was also very influential for one particular listener who later went on to make a bit of a name for himself on the guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLEUSn8y9TI
There is something amusing about watching someone like Page playing 'air guitar to favorite record...
I know there are several guitar players in Subsim and I think it might be interesting to hear about what their first guitar influence experiences were. I started being interested in playing guitar when I heard Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley songs on the radio as a kid; Bo had that rhythm and that tremolo guitar sound, but Chuck had all those flash licks and runs, so this song is the one that really got me wanting a guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kT3kCVFFLNg
Every guitar player that followed after him owes a royalty to Chuck for all those cool playing moves they nicked from him over the years...
I still play 'air guitar' to that song...
Years later, as a 13-year-old kid watching the Ed Sullivan show in February of 1964, four rather regular looking guys with guitars had girls screaming to get at them; hmm, regular guys (like me) with teenage girls throwing themselves at them (unlike me) and the main difference was they had guitars and I didn't: "I really gotta get a guitar!!" ...
Anybody else?...

Oh yea.
I started to play when I was about 12 or 13. I couldn't sing or play rhythm very well and I still can't so I got into playing lead which seem to come natural. Back then (early 60's) there was no TAB books or YouTube. I think it made you a better player to learn by ear.
These are some of the first songs I tried to learn with varying degrees of success.

For years I have had the idea of creating a musical version of our
The four/Five Word Story Game
and call it The five word lyrics game.
Little more about this idea.
A member copy a sentence of 5 words from a song and put it, in this thread. The member also give information from which song and group/singer he or she have got these 5 lyrics words from.
Next member shall try to find another 5 lyrics words from an another group or singer, words that continue from the last 5 lyrics words
(Got the feeling you really don't know what I mean and I don't know how to)
Only an idea

^ with reference to the Toccata and Fugue posted by Skybird further North. I do not like church organs that much, but here..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgLwrnSOMyA
We have been in Passau some days ago, visited the 'Stephansdom' and heard the Toccata in this dome like above, if played by another musician.
The organ in the Stephansdom now comprises five different Organs with 231 registers and 17388 pipes, which can be operated and played via one central board ("Eisenbart'scher Haupt-Spieltisch") you can see here. This is absolutely breathtaking, even with good earphones there is no comparison, the sound literally passes through the body, one organ calls and another answers from another direction but within a gigantic "sound curtain".
In the 18th century, the main organ was already installed, when playing it the west facade of the dome collapsed due to the sound pressure and infrasound. "And then they were five".. if you ever get there be sure to get a ticket and listen :)

1968 Yardbirds.
I'm not sure what the pondering smiley (:hmmm:) is supposed to mean, so I'll just shotgun this:
The song Dazed ad Confused was originally written and recorded by a folk singer named Jake Holmes in 1967:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTsvs-pAGDc
Holmes and The Yardbirds were both on the same bill on a tour in 1967 and Jimmy Page was standing in the wings of the stage when he heard the song and he and the rest of the 'Birds liked it so much they adapted the song to their style (the theme of nicking songs from other artists appearing on the same bill with Page would be repeated several times in Zeppelin's career); the 'Birds did give credit to Holmes for the song. Following the breakup of The Yardbirds in 1968; Page was literally the one man left standing as a part of the band, and, for a number of contractual reasons, the burden of fulfilling and honoring performance commitments fell on his shoulders. Page recruited some other musicians to fill out the band roster so he could finish with the 'Birds obligations. The remodeled band was renamed The New Yardbirds and did few gigs under that name; later, an offhand comment by Keith Moon to Page & Co. caused the group to again change their name to Led Zeppelin...
Not really wanting to keep playing The Yardbirds catalog and needing new material, Page reworked Jake Holmes' song and recorded it, giving writing credit to Page himself and none to Holmes; not the last time Page would take credit for others' works. Holmes did eventually sue for songwriting credit and royalties and Zeppelin settled with him out of court; Holmes got his credit... sort of; the credit now reads "written by Jimmy page...inspired by Jake Holmes"...
Here is Holmes telling his side of the tale:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA3k_-oUnLY
In 1983, three of the surviving members of the original lineups of The Yardbirds got together and formed a new group, Box of Frogs; they toured and released two albums, but never really caught on with the public; stylistically, their sound was an amalgam of early Yardbirds blues-based work and an attempt to 'modernize' the sound with some mid-80's New Wave influences. A goodly number of prominent musicians, particularly guitarists, made guest appearances on the Box of Frogs albums, including Jimmy Page. Here is a video of one of Box of Frogs' songs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zywY7xXzenI
...and I'm posting this video I stumbled across just because it me laugh...

Yes, we all know Booker T:s magnificent Green Onions, but this is also worth of listening.:yep:
Space Debris is new acquaitance for me too. Great retro-stuff. So great, that it took some time for me to realize that this song really isnt any classic tune from late 60's-early 70's I've just somehow missed...Or is it?:hmmm::)

Interesting, Thank you.
Box of Frogs' song seem to be based on that widely used boogie riff made famous by ZZ Top/ la Grange, Wonderin if the origins of that riff can be found further back in the history.
At least Norman Greenbaum's Spirit In The Sky few years earlier sounds quite similar, if not identical.

Good question about the boogie riff. The name of John Lee Hooker immediately came to mind; he probably is the earliest known musician to use the boogie riff and many consider him the originator of that guitar style; from Hooker's 1948 original:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4pp02_GN9A
That recording made a huge impact on guitarists, as did many other of Hooker's compositions (George Thorogood' s entire career is basically a recitation of Hooker's catalog); Hooker himself credited his father for teaching him the riff(s), so its highly likely there are earlier versions/variations out there, but I haven't found any that closely resemble Hooker's renditions. One thing to remember about anything have to do with Blues based music: since it was considered "Race Music", there was very little of the organized structure found in White music styles in terms of record labels watching out for artist's interests, copyright protection, legal representation, etc. The lack of structure and accountability is one of the reasons Black Blues artists were so often ruthlessly ripped off by the White music industry who appropriated major aspects of Blues music and passed it off as the product of White artists. The most cited example is Pat Boone whose career was based on taking Black Blues and R&B artist's songs and 'whitening' them up for mainstream radio and TV:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAwBa8Pqi6Y
Almost like R&B/R&R on Valium. Here's the original by The Originator (self=proclaimed); the fierce energy is a major reason the kids gravitated more towards Rev. Penniman than Boone:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kM1khne_sg
BTW< ZZ Top were sued over their song La Grange by the holder of the copyright to Hooker's Boogie Chillen for appropriating the structure and style of the Hooker song and, after winding through many courts and appeals, ZZ Top finally settled out of court; sadly, Hooker didn't have any rights to his song and never saw a penny of the settlement money; however, the case did catch the attention of the US Congress and led to the passage of new intellectual property law protections, including extending those protections to older material...
Even though Hooker lost out on compensation in the ZZ Top case, early in his recording career, he devised a method of maximizing his royalties; Race records were recorded by small time, almost always white, record labels that had a very small distribution, sometimes less than a couple of counties in a given state; knowing that the likelihood one label in one state would have any idea what was going on in another state, Hooker, as he traveled from state to state, would adopt aliases and sign record deals n each location, giving him multiple paychecks; for this reason, Blues researchers and collectors have found themselves trying to sort out whether some more obscure recording that sound like Hooker are indeed John Lee recording under one of his aliases...
Many years ago, I saw documentary on the early years of R&R and there was clip of Elvis in the film, holding a press conference very early in his career, just as he was beginning to become famous; at one point, a reporter asked him about his musical influences; Elvis immediately started to rattle of a list of Black performers like Big Bill Broonzy, Joe Turner, and others; no sooner than Elvis started his list, his manager, Colonel Parker, quickly and loudly interrupted and abruptly shut down the conference; it seems it would do Elvis image no good if his loyal fans knew he was an aficionado of "Race Music" and that some of his hits were originally recorded by 'colored people'...
Speaking of Big Bill, he had a recording, released in 1954, four years after Hooker's boogie in 1948 that was also a precursor to the later Blues boogie guitar styles:

A couple of things...
I want to be absolutely clear and fair to Elvis: If you ever see the film clip I described, you would see Elvis with a very surprised and puzzled look on his face when Col. Parker stopped the news conference. Elvis, himself saw no problem with crediting his own influences; the desire to make it seem Elvis' talent was a product of 'whole cloth' was his management and record label (RCA in the US); The power of talent management and the labels was very strong at the time of Elvis' climb to fame and Elvis was a bit too submissive in deferring to their wishes, more out of his upbringing as a polite Southern boy and much less than any personal desire to unduly gain from the works of others. Had he come along a decade later, he might have been able to exert more control over his works in much the same ways The Beatles, and others were able to do...
Re: Pat Boone; I think I may have told this already either here or in another thread, but, when I graduated high school in 1969, our graduating class had a nondenominational/interdenominational prayer breakfast the day of our graduation. It was common for graduates to spend the night before Graduation Day having one last blowout; there was the usual teenage debauchery and, on the next morning, those of us assembled around the breakfast table were a sad collection of hangovers, lack of sleep, and sheepish visages as we listened to the various clergy say how proud they were of us; about halfway through, they announced there was avery special guest and into the hall walked Pat Boone. Now, most of us in 1969 had musical tastes that didn't include the watered-down 'pop/rock' of Boone, so we weren't exactly thrilled to see him; I don't think he fully understood why his comments about how we, the debauched, were shining examples of then current day teenagers caused not a few laughs and snickers...
Pat Boone wasn't just satisfied with trying to sanitize early rock: he once released an album of Heavy Metal songs delivered in that ol' Pat Boone Style:

Over in the Comment Thread, this was posted:
Accordion with The Who? Never
Well..., (ahem)..., Exhibit A:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49H0IfoILwQ
I have a bit of a bias against accordion music in general; perhaps its because of all the cheesy accordionists on early TV shows who seemed to grind out endless renditions of Lady of Spain and Beer Barrel Polka; more likely, it was due to an elementary Catholic school classmate whose mother made him take accordion lessons, and, when he would learn a new number, his mom would insist on her little boy (who was also a bit of a school bully) play his newfound repertoire for us in his class; his mother was a big contributor to the church and was de facto leader of what passed for the school's PTA, so the nuns would allow her to foist sonny boy's 'talents' upon us; aside from the fact the kid had really very limited talent for his instrument, he also had the habit, when he made a mistake and played a bad note, of starting whatever song he was playing all over again, from the beginning, thus a song that would normally have passed in two or three minutes stretched out to a quarter hour or more; at least there was the satisfaction of watching the school bully cower under his mother's gaze and sweat profusely as he struggled to get through his song...
Sheryl Crow doing a take on The Who's song and showing off some nice accordion chops...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XG3Re60iWUY
Another example of a Who song done with accordion by an aptly named group, Those Darn Accordions:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0k25tzIBII
Those Darn Accordions are worth looking up on YT; they have some interesting and clever covers of rock hits and other hits (Led Zep, Devo, Charlie Daniels, etc.) posted...
...and, so far, not a single video of Lady of Spain...

...About the Hookfoot. Yes, they had a lot of potential, as being Elton John's early background band etc.
"- not for nothing did Eric Clapton surprise David Letterman a lttle while ago by informing him "I'm not the world's best guitar player. Caleb Quaye is."
but nevertheless they didn' reach any remarkable commercial success.
