A bit of sad news for Stones fans; drummer Charlie Watts is going to have to sit out the US leg of the Stones' "No Filter" tour this fall due to recovery from an unspecified medical procedure he underwent recently; his doctors had advised him to forgo the tour leg out of an abundance of caution given Charlie turned 80 years old this past June; the Stones had already postponed the tour last year due to Covid and Charlie didn't want the band to postpone again on his account, particularly since the fans had been in long anticipation of the shows, so he bowed out and recommended Steve Jordan, a good friend of his, and a member of Keith's X-Pensive Winos band, to sit in his place; Jordan is a highly respected drummer and multi-instrumentalist who, besides the Winos, has worked with many, many great artists and musicians over the decades...
This will be the very first time Charlie has ever missed a gig since joining the Stones at their very beginning nearly 60 years ago; Brian Jones was notorious for missing gigs, or being barely even able to perform due to substance abuse (it was a main reason the Stones stopped touring in 1966) and Mick has been the cause of cancelled gigs due to health reasons (mainly voice related, although he was briefly sidelined due to heart surgery), and Keith, oddly enough, is second only to Charlie in in consistency of gig appearances, having been the cause of cancellation on only a couple of occasions and those due to injury and not substances; Charlie did have a bout with heroin addiction back in the 80s, but he kicked it with the aid of Keith, who felt responsible for having got his good friend exposed to the drug; and, Charlie also battled a case of throat cancer but has been in remission for quite some time...
Charlie is a remarkably stable person when you consider the career and and world in which he has lived; in couple of months he and his wife, Shirley, will celebrate 57 years of marriage; Keith has said, and been seconded by Mick, that Charlie is the heart and soul of the Stones and, if Charlie ever quit, the Stones would very likely cease to exist; Keith, when once asked about Charlie's place in the band, related how, in the 70s, the Stones had been off the road and out of the studio for a long, long time and they decided to get together to do a new album; Keith said he and Mick were concerned that perhaps the band would not be able to work as they had after the long hiatus, but he he got to the studio and, as he walked down the hallway, he heard Charlie warming up on his sparse drum kit and he thought "Charlie's here and he's ready. All is right with the world"...
I've seen the Stones several times over the decades and every time there is a point in the set where they introduce the band members and the other musicians/singers, and, every time, the loudest cheers go up when Charlie is introduced...
Best wishes to Charlie for a speedy and successful recuperation and hope he is able to soon again take his place, silent, bemused, detached, as the heartbeat of the Stones...

As I have said, I'm not usually a big fan of remakes of songs, let alone Iconic ones at that. Adam Lambert along with Queen doing " Who wants to live forever."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1Wf9uqCDGs
Watching that clip brought back memories of the whole 'long hair vs. straights' battles during the beginnings of the 60s rock revolution; the whole mocking tone towards the new bands was standard on TV shows of the mid-60s; the clip below is from a June 1964 Hollywood Palace airing hosted by Dean Martin; the eye-rolling snark of the crooner is perhaps the last futile volley of his generation as they were soon overwhelmed by not only the British invasion but, also, the homegrown variants brewing up...
Note The Stones are indeed playing live and we actually get to hear Bill Wyman's bass prominently, affording a rare chance to sample his abilities as a bass player; the song is shortened, a custom at the time on TV shows - less time for the songs, more time to sell cigarettes and beer...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqYEkYpX-uY
I stumbled across this clip while looking for the above; this is from what is labelled as a "rehearsal", but the full audience responses seem to indicate it actually occurred during the taping of the show; again, live, the song falls apart when Keith's guitar goes amiss, apparently from either a broken string or some problem with the bridge; at the end, Mick is making a joking comment about "one of your American guitars"...

I always thought the "hair battles" was a cultural thing i.e. "look at those foreigners with their crazy hair" was really silly and stupid especially when lots of American bands started doing the same thing starting from about the mid-'60s up to the '80s and '90s.

...
The "hair battles" were really more than just about tonsorial fashion(s); it became emblematic of other issues bubbling up in US society; postwar USA was an ongoing homage to the ideal of "The Average", as in the Average family, the Average home, the Average job, etc.; you could measure your 'averageness' by the TV shows of the 50s to early 60s: if your life, look, and outlook wasn't like Father Knows Best, Ozzie & Harriet, or Leave It To Beaver, well, you musta been some kinda outcast oddball, probably one of them Commies; even before the advent of The Beatles, a standard solution for dealing with 'oddballs' by straight, white males was to physically punish those outside the white-bread norm, and that animus accelerated after the young men in the mid-60s started to let their hair grow beyond the "high and tight' military-inspired" styles of the postwar; I experienced, along with other of my friends some very scary moments when confronted by packs of 'short hairs' who thought they would 'teach us a lesson' (oddly, when trying to attack a lone longhair, they always approached as a team of t least two or more; maybe they thought the combined length of their short hair cuts would compensate for the fearsome power of the mighty longhair style :haha: ); longhairs even experienced situations where they were denied service in restaurants, stores, and such, which caused a good many of them to feel solidarity with the Black struggle, thus adding more support to the Civil Rights cause; nowadays, the whole thing may seem silly, but then it could have real ramifications...
One particular situation has remained in my memory over the years; in the late 60s-early 70s, I knew two extremely attractive young ladies as good friends; they were what is referred to as "lipstick lesbians", gay women who are very attractive, bucking the usual image of 'butch dykes'; I met them when I was at a rock club and they came up to me at the bar and sat on either side of me and became very familiar, wrapping their arms around me; they told me a couple of guys were pestering them and asked if I would play along in a effort to shoo away the pests; I'm sitting there thinking I've just hit the jackpot and they stayed with me for the rest of the evening, and at the end, they a bit sheepishly told me they were lesbians and partners and apologized for leading me on; I wasn't offended and tol them it didn't matter since they were obviously both smart, funny, and very good company; we became friends over the follow time and I found there were benefits to being seen with them around the scene; very few people at the time knew they were gay (the very acknowledgement of that could even get you arrested in some parts of LA), so I found that an awful lot of straight women became very interested in a guy with two beauties hanging around him, and the girls, themselves, would often introduce me to their own straight lady friends they thought I might find interesting...
One day, I ran into the girls in Hollywood while walking down the street, and we decided to get a bite to eat; one of them needed to get cigarettes, so they ducked into a liquor store while I waited outside for them to return; moments after they had gone in, a car-full of short-haired jock types pulled up to the curb and began taunting me with the usual "look at all that hair!", "Is it a boy or a girl?", etc., type of nonsense; I ignored them, but I sensed they might have been about to get out of the car and get violent; just as I thought that; the store door opened and out strutted the girls; the guys in the car fell silent stunned at the sight of them; the girls were quick to assess the situation and made a bit of show in fawning over me; one of the girls feigned suddenly seeing the car-full of guys and asked me if they were fiends of mine; I said "No" and she said "Pity, you know how much we like your friends"; the other girl walked over nearer to the car, looked in an commented "Oh look they're all guys! Well, I guess they're all out out to have fun...", adding, pointedly, "...with each other. Well, never mind, we don't hold your lifestyle against you"...
There was a sudden look of horror on the guys faces as the words sunk in and they peeled rubber getting away from the curb and down the street...
One of the most successful Broadway musicals of all times was inspired by the "hair battles" of the 60s titled simply Hair; several hit songs resulted from the score for the musical and the clip below os of the title song, sung by the real family pop group, The Cowsills, who, in turn, were the real life inspiration for the TV series, The Partridge Family; I think this was one of their two #1 US singles...

Probably one of the best rock vocalists ever. Along with Ann Wilson of Heart, Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, Steve Perry of Journey, Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship, drummer / vocalist Deen castronovo, Jimi Jameson of survivor and Robert Plant among many others, their incredible vocals defined a generation.
Pat Benatar easily ranks among the best. This is shadows of the night / running with the night.

No offense intended; I just happened to think the "concept" video was a bit of fun to watch and, given the military bent of Subsim, it might interest a goodly portion of the members; the comment was meant to be lighthearted with no real knock meant on you... :salute:
Earlier today, for some odd reason, songs by Quicksilver Messenger Service popped into my head; I haven't heard anything by them in years on the radio and its a pity they seem to have faded into the mists of popular memory; they were one of the founders of the San Francisco Psychedelic Sound of the 60s, up there with The Airplane; they boasted great vocals and musicianship, in particular John Cipollina, a really very seriously underrated guitarist; he had a sound that was unique when he came on the scene; he actually had two outputs on his guitar, one for the treble (bridge) pickup and one for the 'bass' (neck) pickup, with one feed going into tube amps and the other into solid state amps and speaker cabinets; sadly, he suffered from a life-long disorder and he finally succumbed to it at the relatively young age of 45 years...

Reminded me of the video U2 shot for the song back in 1989; it was of a sort of mini-concert they did from the rooftop of a liquor store/restaurant in Downtown Los Angeles on the edge of Skid Row, an area of flop houses, transients, drug dens, etc.; in the video, one of the announcers on the soundtrack is heard advising caution for those who go down to see the filming, and that was actually very wise counsel since, even in broad daylight, the area was dangerous; the area has since been remarkably cleaned up and is even becoming gentrified; I used to work in a bank data center abut three blocks down from where this was shot and when I started working there in 1970, the area was much worse and was more akin to something out of the Wild West, and, since I was working the night shift til 1:00am, venturing out for meals, etc., was a continual adventure...
Although the video makes reference to crowd of "30,000", the actual turnout was around 1,55 to 2,000; the LAPD did, in fact try to shut down the filming (the force was still very wary of any gathering of young people and rock music), and they did actually cut power to the band's equipment from the mains, but U2's management had anticipated such a move by the police and had generators on site as backup...

Founder of Penguin Cafe Orchestra sadly died in 1997; RIP Simon Jeffes.
This track was used in PBS's "NOVA" in their episode of Fermat's Theorem (the most difficult mathematical problem - it took 358 years to solve!)
It was also used in commercials for Morgan Stanley, and IIRC "The Handmaid's Tale" to great effect.

For the follow up James Bond movie to "Goldfinger", namely "Thunderball", the producers had Shirley Bassey sing their penned theme "Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang". A great song too with Shirley really belting out the lyrics.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d91d8p7rry0
However it was decided that a softer, more romantic version would be better. And so Dionne Warwick was chosen to record version no. 2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CItxwqZcHf8
"Great, that's a wrap"..they probably said......But later on reflection, the song didn't say anything about the film or the title "Thunderball".
....So they had Tom Jones record the now familiar theme "Thunderball". And so the story goes, as he was squeezing out the last notes during recording he collapsed/fainted, and that's the version they went with.
