Hendrix given a jazz treatment, first a small, intimate trio for a very large song...

...then a large jazz band version of a smaller, intimate song...

I wonder if the Army band's arrangement of their number is one of the arrangements done by Gil Evans; Evans was a master jazz arranger, producer, and conductor who worked extensively with Miles Davis; Davis was actively seeking a collaboration with Hendrix, but the project(s) were cut short by Hendrix's death; Davis, a notorious anti-social person with a very, very small circle of friends/associates, was bowled over by Hendrix's talents, particularly when he realized Hendrix couldn't even read music; Davis had thought, originally, that Hendrix had meticulously worked out and charted his arrangements of his recordings and was impressed by Hendrix's compositional skills; Davis even made a very rare public appearance to attend Hendrix's funeral/burial and was observed to be weeping at the service; Gil Evans did take the canceled Davis/Hendrix project further on by writing full arrangement for a number of Hendrix compositions and recorded the results and performed the arrangements with various incarnations of the Gil Evans Orchestra...
For those in the UK, the song Third Stone From the Sun may seem oddly familiar; Hendrix's girlfriend, when he first arrived in the UK, was Kathy Etchingham, and she recently noted in a new Hendrix biography that Jimi was a huge fan of the long-running UK soap opera Coronation Street; it seems he really like the open riff to the program's theme music and adapted it to his own Third Stone From the Sun song as the opening riff/run of the song and as the basis for the pulsating bass line that runs through the recording...

This is the reformulation of Journey called Journey through time with original guitarist Neal Schon and drummer-vocalist Deen Castronovo. This is a great re-arrangement of Trial by fire ( 2nd song ) and Stay Awhile ( 3rd song ) Neal looks so happy with his new band and just playing with Deen and the others.

"The Horrible CERN Girls") was an all-female parody pop group, self-labelled "the one and only High Energy Rock Band", which was founded by employees of CERN and performed at CERN and other HEP-related events. Their musical style is often described as doo-wop. The initials of their name, LHC, are the same as those of the Large Hadron Collider, which was later built at CERN. Their humorous songs are freely available on their website."

A great song written by a Germans. Sung by Lale Andersen who herself went to a concentration camp, and translated into English. Vera Lynn was a popular singer. R.I.P. 103 years was a long life!
Vera Lynn was an English singer, songwriter and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during the Second World War.

Although my own ability to play guitar is steadily waning, I still like to browse YT to see the various lessons/tutorials on guitar playing; some are quite good, some are dreadful, and some are very creative; there is a YTuber, Paul Davids, who posts various lessons and his approach is very humorous and approachable and he manages to convey a goodly amount of actual usable knowledge in his lessons; this is one he did to explain Funk guitar playing and I wish this had been around when I was first trying to master Funk guitar decades ago...

Lots of stories associated with both this song and the movie.
Nancy Sinatra's own words.
"That was a scary experience. John, whose music I just treasure, wrote the song with Leslie Bricusse, who is an old friend of mine. Cubby Broccoli had known my mother and father for years - he'd been there when I was born. The London Philharmonic played on the session. Real pressure."
Pressure indeed. According to the composers, nerves got to Sinatra so badly that numerous takes were needed before a definitive recording was in the bag.
I've looked around the interweb loads of times and there isn't one video of Nancy singing that song live, me thinks John Barry and Leslie Bricusse were being extremely diplomatic when they said it took numerous takes.

One of my favourite film songs, i stilll have it on a James Bond theme LP record from the 1980ies, lots of John Barry's music. I have no idea about what Mrs Sinatra had to go through, will sure look for it :hmmm:

More trivia....
The original version of the theme song was meant to be sung by Julie Rogers, but for whatever reason, Nancy Sinatra got the gig. Don't get me wrong I love Nancy's version, but the original has a lot of appeal too....more in keeping with the book and not the movie.
Here Julie Rogers sings the original version ( note:- wrongly credited....doesn't matter ).

...
You Only Live Twice was a bit of a mismatch of song and singer when it comes to Nancy Sinatra; she was known in the music biz here in Hollywood as a bit of a weak singer, with a rather limited dynamic range; the reason she probably got the gig was what has become the 'norm' for Bond film theme songs: get an artist who is hot at the moment the film is to be released, a sort of 'flavor of the month' situation; don't be surprised if Billie Eilish isn't the next Bond theme singer...
If you listen to the YOLT clip carefully, it is easy to recognize some of the 'tricks' used by recording engineers and producers to disguise a weak voice; double (or more) tracking of the lead vocal was that eras version of auto-tuning, using the lusher mixture of tracks to hide a flat voice; the inclusion of a prominent vocal chorus when the time came to hit the higher registers or to 'strain' the voice is another trick...
So why did Nancy get the nod? Well, aside from the fact she was hot on the charts with her little These Boots Are Made For Walikn' ditty, making her the current flavor of the month, her father being Frank Sinatra likely didn't hurt, either; Frank was in a career upswing at the time and very bankable, with a lot of pull in the recording and film industries; it is likely MGM, the releasing studio, would have been interested in getting on Frank's good side and signing Nancy as a Bond theme singer would have gone a long way to that end; there were certainly far, far beter singers than Nancy available, and, at the time of the film/song release, not a few in Hollywood were scratching their heads wondering about the wisdom of the choice of singer...
I believe the whole Bond theme mythos started when there was the jaw-dropping performance of Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey, a performance that was the absolute benchmark by which following themes would, and will be, measured; the whole Goldfinger project was a serendipitous situation with the right story, the right stars, the right theme song, the perfect opening title visuals, and the perfect singer all coming together; the film was also the gelling of the James Bond canon and the real blueprint for the films that followed, the previous films being so pale in comparison, some people actually believe Goldfinger was the first of the Bond films...

There you have it: no double/multi-tracking, no assisting vocal choruses (particularly when belting in the higher registers), no mixing down the vocal into the backing tracks; Bassey's voice is singular, unadorned, mixed way up front, and given free rein; the backing arrangement seems almost reverent of her voice, trying not to diminish its power; indeed, one of the most famous and classic film themes ever...
..one might even say, her performance is a Gold Standard...
[EDIT]: Re my Billie Eilish comment; I haven't been following the machinations of the most recent Bond film and, out of curiosity, I search for the new film, and lo and behold, Eilish is the singer of the new bond theme; flavor of the month continues...

I've always like the sound of bagpipes, ever since I was a small child; there's something about the otherworldly sound, a discordance to some, but, to me an intriguing sound no other instrument comes near...
In my senior year of high school, I switched schools to one in San Francisco, where I had my records and rank in JR-ROTC transferred; I found out the ROTC unit there had a good sized drum corps which would be deployed for parades and special occasions; being a guy who liked all things loud and raucous, I asked the cadet in charge of the corps, who was of lower rank, if I could join in; he was hesitant, since, as leader he should have the highest rank in the unit; we settled it by me giving my self a 'temporary demotion' to a rank lower than his, with usually a Sargent's rank in place of my brass, whenever the corps would participate in public events; I played a large marching snare and participated in about a half dozen or so parades and other massed events with the corps; every time I see marching drummer corps, I am reminded of that experience; I am also reminded of how heavy that drum felt after marching with it for five or so miles, and how bruised my leg was from the drum bouncing off it...

I often spend some of my YT browsing time looking up bagpipe postings; the many creative uses for the instruments, in various genres, is interesting...
I very much like the McCartney clip, ever since I first saw it decades ago; I'm not a big fan of McCartney at all, not being as taken by "silly love songs" as he is; its a shame he really hasn't lived up to the hype of his fame, preferring to write and perform what can be called 'pop treacle', for the most part...
He did try to make some effort to be relevant, but it seems to fall apart as a 'not close, no cigar' sort of affair; Macca released this song back in 1972 as the debut single from his new band, Wings; reportedly, he was stung by criticism of his solo music as being light fluff by the critics; he was also miffed that his fellow ex-Beatles, Lennon and Harrison were getting a lot of praise and press for their socially relevant songs, at the time; being a descended 'son of the sod' Macca wrote his own 'biting' protest song about The Troubles in Northern Ireland...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_O3cCs9qmM
The song was banned by the BBC, but the Beeb would have banned any song about The Troubles out of hand, so it wasn't due to any 'impact' Macca might have had; contrast his effort with Lennon's song he wrote and recorded to raise funds for the Irish Self Defense funds...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Mq_A6K9a0
A bit more Dylan and a lot less Top of the Pops; I remember, when Macca's song came out, a US TV news reporter went into the Catholic Nationalist area of Northern Ireland to get local reaction to Macca's song; most were diplomatically non-committal about the song, but the reporter asked one older and grizzled Irishman "What do you think of McCartney's song, Give Ireland Back to the Irish?; the old guy spat back: "Give the damn song back to McCartney!"...

I stumbled upon this clip of an all-female band, Hardly Dangerous, formed in the late 1980s that was very popular on the LA club circuit; saw them many times live and was friends with the lead singer Tomi Rae Brown (more about her later); they were an exceptionally good band and, when Madonna was launching her new Maverick Records label in the early 1990s, Hardly Dangerous was one of the first, if not the first, artists signed to the label; however, once they were signed Madonna and her partners apparently sought to change the band's image and sound to something more pop, which did not sit well with the band, and, particularly Tomi Rae; the bickering went on for some time with the outcome being HD never did record for Maverick and the dispute made the band somewhat untouchable by other labels who did want to cross swords with Madonna, who was the reigning queen of pop, at the time; its a pity they never got the shot they deserved, because as this clip, released by the band at the start of their run shows, they were a very impressive act...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY2txLunqZA
About Tomi Rae...
...when I knew her, she was a really great person to be around; she is bright, funny, very informal, and, basically, just a nice, decent person; she has tons of talent, but she doesn't seem to be self-impressed; I don't think I ever saw her not smiling and/or having a great time living her life; she is one of the few people I knew during the Sunset Strip days of the 80s/90s of whom I have fond memories...
She also is known as being the fourth, and last wife, and widow of The Godfather of Soul, James Brown, and is the mother of his last son, James Brown Jr.; a great deal of her last two decades has been taken up in a battle with Brown's other children over James' estate, with the other kids contesting Tomi's right as a widow; the last I heard, some sort of settlement of the estate had been reached, so I hope Tomi is doing well...

Fun fact: Cab Calloway was in the movie "The Blues Brothers" singing this very song.
Further fun Cab Calloway fact: Cab was featured in a couple of Betty Boop cartoons (I'm a big Betty fan), with his voice as a singer providing the songs and his dance moves being copied for the character in the cartoon he was giving voice to; by using rotoscope, a process where the filmed movements of a subject are traced over by animators, frame by frame, to produce a character's movements, Cab's slinky moves were translated to the Boop cartoons...

Lyrics
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many years must a mountain exist
Before it is washed to the sea?
And how many years can some people exist
Before they're allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind
Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
And how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind

No worries; between YT music posts that disappear due to record labels/artists/music publishers, etc., blocking videos either because they have yet to wring out the last monetization drop, arbitrary 'territorial' divisions ("not available in your country"), or just plain arbitrariness, I've kinda gotten used to being locked out of what might be interesting clips; I was just sort of having fun with my post, making light of it rather than just complaining "Hey! Your link don't work!!"; however I can now go about boasting I'm approved of by a least one person, even if its only about YT clips... :D
Speaking of extreme blocking of YT music clips, the Jimi Hendrix Estate has been one of the more aggressive blockers of content, making it very hard to find quality or unusual, rare content; the Estate swats down YT postings of Hendrix content with a heavy-handedness that is impressive; very rarely does a posting of JH music or videos last very long, sometimes even less than a day, on YT; even posters who are either reviewing JH material or instructors giving lessons on JH guitar techniques have found themselves on the receiving end of "Cease and Desist" letters, even though those types of posts would normally fall under the "Fair Use" protections; I recall one poster who related how he/she/they got a letter withing 12 hours of their original posting; the Estate must be monitoring YT 24/7...
The two clips below are actually covers of JH I found on YT of two iconic JH numbers; Killing Floor was a cover by JH of a Howlin' Wolf song and is the performance arrangement that JH played for Clapton when he blew him off the stage, leaving a very visibly shaken Clapton in shock backstage asking "Is he rally that good?"; the other is Villanova Junction, an instrumental Jimi was working on in the last year or so of his life and that he would often play as a sort of jam in live concerts, with his performance of the number at Woodstock being his probably most famous; it has elements of many of Jimi's influences like Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell; in fact, you can hear SRV nicking a good bit of Jimi's Villanova Junction feel and tone for SRV's cover of Burrell's Chitlins Con Carne instrumental...
These covers are virtually identical, note for note, technique for technique to Jimi's original; much props to the players for their abilities...

Once a single sale, this CD is now part of the 20-CDs-pack I recently bought, named "John Williams Conductor". Four CDs in it are classical Big Band swing - and what a swinging sound it is! These four CDs, since I bought the box, I listen to day in, day out. It really boosts my daily mood.
Will find the other three albums as well. The one is better than the other. If you swing and Big Band, for heavens sake - listen it!
12 July 1962: A group of fervid blues enthusiasts, who had been performing individually in various 'trad jazz' combos for months, join together to form a new group and give their first ever performance in public...

Next year, 2012, will mark 60 years of The Stones as a group, no mean feat no matter what style or genre of music you're in; that in itself should give them some bit of satisfaction...

Four. Well, they have all the songs of it online, but apparently forgot to post a complete album link. You must pick the songs yourself by finding them by their album covers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LbnHgTh-JI
These four CDs are part of the 20 CDs box I mentioned. The other albums in that box focus on his orchestral arrangements for movies by Spielberg, violine music he rearranged by his scores for Perlman and one or two others, then there is an album with his sports fanfares, and event fanfares, and broadway scores, and so forth and forth
I can only strongly recommend that box, it costed me 65 coins, and is of top recording and orchestral quality. Most of the album "topics" I liked. Only a few I did not like. Superb collection.

Just found this documentary on YT; for those of us who lived our teens in the 60s and may have formed bands or, at least, got the bug to pick up an instrument, this film may resonate; a time when rock music was DIY and the scenes were improvised...

HMS P48
https://www.naval-history.net/Photo12ssUntiring1NPDavidMaltby-CharlieChiversS.JPG
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNu_dWL-eNQ
Thomas Dolby's haunting song was inspired by the death of his uncle, a WW2 Royal Navy submariner, aboard HMS P48 on Christmas Day, 1942.
Last Barrow built U-Class submarine not to be given a name for use instead of the Pennant Number.
She was deployed in the Mediterranean for support of the allied landings in Algeria (Operation TORCH) soon after arrival on station in October 1942. This patrol was for interception of enemy warships attempting to attack assault and follow-up convoys or allied warships off the landing areas. In late November she patrolled off Bizerta and Tunis and sailed for her third mission on 21st December 1942 when she was destined for the Tunis area.
Due to return to Malta on 5th January 1943, no contact was made from her after one week on patrol. Post war analysis shows that she was attacked on Christmas day by the Italian destroyers ARDENTE and ARDITO which were escorting two ships from Palermo in the Gulf of Tunis. Two depth charge salvoes were fired by ARDENTE after she had detected the presence of a submarine. The third attack sank this submarine NW of Zembra Island. Despite carrying out torpedo attacks on her previous patrols she had no successes. The Commanding Officer was Lieutenant M E Faber RN.

The rumor at the time of this clip was the record company wanted a music video of the song, but Reed just wasn't interested in the idea and/or was just being his usual contrarian self and flat out refused to participate; to actually commission and then destroy a rather pricey animatronic figure must have sent some of the corporate bean counters into apoplexy; this video was deemed so disturbing at the time that it was banned by some outlets...

" ... in Ulthar, which lies beyond the river Skai, no man may kill a cat; and this I can verily believe as I gaze upon him who sitteth purring before the fire. For the cat is cryptic, and close to strange things which men cannot see. He is the soul of antique Aegyptus, and bearer of tales from forgotten cities in Meroë and Ophir. ..."

Here he is being mobbed by his adoring fans in Australia.
"Shintaro" - Koichi Ose, had a HUGE cult following in Australia in the early 1960s, bigger than the Beatles :yep: and did a lot for Post War relations between our respective countries.
For Catfish...re the Olympics....Myself being quite cynical re the World "situation", I watched the opening Tokyo Olympics ceremony and found it quite moving and very well done - minimalist and decent. The massed drones were WOW, and now I'm watching the daily competitions and quite enjoying it surprisingly :)
Re Lockdowns down here....we had some big demonstrations yesterday, anger and frustration bubbling over, punches and bricks being thrown, no looting though - that's not Australian.
