Many years ago, I read an article in a guitar magazine about Keith Richards in which another famed guitarist commented on how you could give Keith any guitar, even a cheap Japanese guitar, and how, in just a few minutes, Keith could master the guitar's idiosyncrasies and make it have the "Keith Richards Sound"; Kieth is even quoted as saying "give me five minutes and I'll make 'em all sound the same"...

To me, it is a prime measure of a great guitarist, or any musician, for that matter, who can achieve his art more from his own skill than from the tools he uses; let's face it guitarists like The Edge, Andy Summers, Vai, etc., would be hard pressed to be as impressive without their tricked out rigs, but others, like Richards, Chuck Berry, a whole slew of Blues greats and not a few guitarist in other genres could make a budget-priced guitar sound like a top-line model with relative ease; its not really in the axe, its in the fingers and the feel and the ear...

I came across this clip of SRV sitting in and jamming with Bernard Allison, the son of the late, great Luther Allison; SRV knew Luther and jammed with him and, in this clip, SRV is playing a borrowed Fender Squier Stratocaster through one of Bernard's amps, a far cry for SRV's usual carefully set up rig; even with a cheap borrowed guitar and a bare bones rig, SRV is quick to find and establish the "SRV Sound"; the talent is in the player, not in what it is being played on...

Re: Squier Strats...

When Fender first introduced the Squier Strat line, it was Fender's effort to put a dent into the Strat copy market, which was sucking away sales form the official Strat sales; the first ones were introduced in the late 80s and were made in Japan, and were very much looked down upon by guitar snobs and purists; there was a music store here in Hollywood which catered primarily to the pro and studio musicians and I would go in there every once in a while and see what was new; I walked in one day and saw a Fender Squier Strat on one of the racks, sort of hidden away apart from the pricier USA Strats and I noticed it has a really low price tag, even for a Squier; I picked it up and found it to be an excellent guitar, impressively built and very substantial and solid; the body was heavy ash and the fretwork and other workmanship was also excellent; I bought it immediately, on the spot, and, whien I took it to one of the sales people to ring it up, he sort of sneered and got snarky about anyone wanting to buy a Squer; I let him finish the sale and I asked him if he had actually tried to play the guitar he had just sold me; he said he hadn't, so I asked him to give it a try before I left the store; he plugged it in, fired it up and was blown away by what a good guitar that Squier actually was; I sensed a bit of regret in his manner as he realized I was walking out of the store with a vastly under-priced guitar...

I had that Squier for many years and other players who tried it out were equally impressed, with some offering to trade "better", more expensive guitars for my Squier, but I never let go of it; it was eventually severely damaged in an accident and I still miss that old, cheap guitar; over the intervening decades, the Squier line of guitars has gained a bit more respect among pro players and can often be seen in the hands of chart topping, influential players...

It's so great to see you back in the forum, Vienna. I for one missed your musical breakdowns and analysis on equipment and musical artists. :Kaleun_Salute:
Your analysis of Fender Squier Stratocastors is spot on. I know a great number of guitarists that purchased Squier Strocastors and used them as a basis for extensive modifications like putting humbucking dual pickups in the body and routing the body for a Floyd Rose bridge / tremolo system. The only difference is the Squiers were not built of Ash or Alder wood but rather of Basswood. I came across a rarity some years ago, An American made Fender Squir Stratocastor and immediately bought it. It plays as well as my American Standard and Strat Plus and Strat Ultra guitars.

I still think you get more bang for the buck with an Ibanez or ESP " Super Strat " electric guitar, though.

With regards to Stevie Ray Vaughan, He is still sorely missed many years after his passing.

Funny that you mention Ibanez; when Fender launched its Japanese Squier line back in the 80s, they farmed out the manufacturing to the same Japanese company that produced the Ibanez guitar line; this ma y account for the quality of the Japanese Squiers at the time; I know later Squiers were made with basswood bodies, but the one I had definitely has an ash body; when I first picked up the guitar in the store, I immediately noticed its weight; I later showed it to a friend of mine who was a fellow guitar player and an accomplished custom woodcrafter; he also noted the weight, so he removed the back plate and examined the exposed bare wood and was surprised to see it was ash; he also made me an offer to buy the guitar from me, although, as he said at the time, "I know it is was my guitar, I'd never sell it"...

I did get hold of a Mexican-made Squier years later, but the quality was not anywhere near the Japanese model I had; I've not really tried the more recent Korean or Chinese made Squier models...

When I was still an active player, I used to use an acoustic to warm up because I found my electric playgirl improved after working out on a thicker neck, more resistant acoustic; I've always thought the best electric players were also those who could exhibit a mastery of acoustic guitars; there actually are a surprising number of very impressive electric players who struggle somewhat with playing acoustics...

These two players never struggled with any acoustic, 6 or 12 string...

Stevie Ray was just a once in a lifetime kind of player. In an age of bubblegum music and the backdrop of mindless singers and people masquerading as artists, Stevie's musical abilities continue to shine as aspiring players continue to study and emulate Stevie Ray's music style and approach. With " musical artists " putting out dance routines that resemble little more than 3rd rate lounge acts one would expect at a holiday Inn, Stevie was the real deal. Suffice to say, there will never be another Stevie Ray.

I think you have quite a find with an Ash bodied Squier. With a proper setup, they play well. On the other hand if you had someone like the late Roy Clark, Jerry Reed or Glen Campbell, people like that could have played a cardboard box with rubber bands and I'm sure still sounded good. That may well be an exaggeration but as most know, that's not really much of a stretch.

Oddly enough, a friend gave me a few of what is called a Rok axe as it is stamped on the head stocks. They are Strat copies and I scoffed upon seeing them. The electronics are terrible on them. The frets were also rather course in how they were finished. Upon tearing into one of them, I discovered it had also had an ash body. The guitar has since seen extensive modifications including medium jumbo frets, Floyd Rose Bridge/ trem, locking tuners and 2 humbucking pickups separated by a single coil pickup. It was refinished in a transparent sunburst finish. It looks great and plays even better.

BTW, not sure if I should post the song I want to, but have you checked out Pokey LaFarge?

Its a very interesting rabbit hole to jump into, they play period-correct instruments (1940's era electric guitars, etc.) and are a kind of "musician's musicians" band, if that makes any sense. Imagine parts of Dr. John, Leon Russel, and Tom Waites and you start to get the feeling.

Keith Richards has rolled the double natural and turned 77 years old on 18 Dec; among the honors bestowed, a Children's Museum in Keith's home state of Connecticut has named a Madagascar cockroach in its insect display "Keith" to commemorate his birthday; the museum even put a miniature guitar in the display case for the insect; the naming of the insect is in a nod to the longstanding joke that, after a nuclear holocaust, the only surviving life forms would be cockroaches and Keith Richards...

Devo 1974, when they were transitioning from graphic arts into music.

Things to note: "Jungle Jim" Mothersbaugh and his (homemade) electric drums, pre- Alan Myers. :yeah:

Jerry Casale likes to talk a lot.

Bob1 Mothersbaugh already played a mean guitar and (I think?) was still in a top-40 cover band. Bob2 Casale was also playing top-40 and hadn't joined the band yet.

...

I saw Devo live the first time when they did their first ever Los Angeles show back in the 70s; they were part of the bill in a punk show held in a low rent social hall more used to hosting Eastern European wedding receptions, etc., than punk shows; I'll never forget the looks of horror on the hall staff as the night progressed...

The social hall was one of several sites used by the LA punk culture since the main, original venue, The Masque, which was located in the basement of a Hollywood Blvd. porno theater, was closed down by the authorities; shows were held in several halls, often places like Elks, Moose, VFW halls, etc., but the tenure rarely lasted beyond a single night with either the halls' management or the authorities banning any re-bookings; the first Devo show was no exception. Everyone in the punk circles had heard Devo played on the radio or had some of their records and anticipation was high. However, Devo was really not prepared for the hardcore nature of the local punk scene and their set was a sort of battle between the spitting punks and the terrified-for-their-lives band members; at the end of the set, Mark Mothersbaugh declared in a rage from the stage that Devo would never, ever play in Los Angeles again...

...a short-lived declaration; a young girl in the audience, who came from a very wealthy family, was about to have a birthday and her daddy offered a rather large sum of money to Devo to play at the girls' party; Devo had a new appreciation for playing live in LA...

Mention was made in previous posts of Japanese guitars and I was reminded of a particular guitar that I lusted after in my late teens; it was a monster of a guitar made in Japan and marketed under the name St. George; it had four (4 !!!) pickups and a unique pickup selection system:

https://www.premierguitar.com/ext/resources/images/content/2020-01/BLOGs/March-20-Vintage-Vault/Mar20_PG_CLM_Vintage-Vault_VN4-pickup-controls_WEB.jpg

The picture above is of one of the several variations of the setup and is the one I saw of the model I wanted; the thumb-wheels are the volume controls, the '"Mic" rocker switches turn on and off each pickup and, IIRC, "R,S" rockers affected the tone; I never did get that guitar and I wonder what it would have sounded like...

"Mix-master" controllers.
So-named because they were also used in counter-top blenders. :haha:

Trust me, you didn't miss anything. Those rocker switches were very loud and "poppy" and were prone to wearing out after a couple of months.
They were also designed for A/C power. :D

Oh, I am well aware of the problems with those switches; a friend back in the day in the 60s had a Teisco model that sported those same switches; some models even came with slide switches in place of the rockers; there were some very bizarre guitar configurations back in the 60s; what I wanted to hear was the sound of four pickups on all at the same time, at full volume; hey, I was a 16-17 year old kid at the time: loud and bizarre was a norm for me... :03: :haha:

Speaking of bizarre, here is a truly "outta sight" groovy axe:

https://guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/teisco-spectrum-5-1@1400x1050-696x522.jpg

Spectrum 5 --

https://www.vintageguitar.com/12123/spectrum-5/

When you read the construction specs on the above guitar, and you note it was regarded as the top of the line for Teisco, one might get the impression a lot of those early guitars were of some quality, but an awful lot of them were...well...awful. Some of the Danelectro models were made with Masonite tops and backs (i still have the remnants of a Coral sitar made by the same Danelectro folks) and sported war surplus, military grade control pots; guitars were made of just about anything and everything back then...

Ah, what a truly glorious time to have been alive and young...

Stripease-Moi...

Bucket List. :)

The title of the clip reminded me of a 1962 #1 hit instrumental number by composer David Rose; the little two-minute composition was released by accident when his record company need a B-side for a Rose single and couldn't reach him for a decision on what to release; the record company delegated the decision to an office clerk who sorted through some unreleased Rose tapes and he liked this ditty, so it became the B-side, but it also became, arguably, David Rose's most memorable hit, not to mention becoming the go-to accompaniment for millions of strippers worldwide...

I picked a clip with a sexy young lady and I do hope the moderators won't object to it being too sexy... :03:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utqGC-H2sPo

...here, in the US, the tune was paired with a stunningly beautiful and sexy former Miss Universe finalist, Miss Sweden 1961, Gunilla Knutsson to sell men's shave cream; the combination of the tune and Ms. Knutsson served to sell an awful lot of product...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tzOVOsMEgo

...don't know about any other guy, but if I had been of shaving age in 1967, I'd have bought a case of the stuff...

The Jim Dandy clip reminded me of how great the dancers in ealy film really were; it also brought to mind this scene:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOoNOs8Ql28

It should be noted that at the time the film was made, in 1955, James Cagney was 56 years old and Bob Hope was 52 Years old; not bad for a couple of guys in their 50s; it is also interesting that both men, in their younger lives, were competitive boxers in either the lightweight or featherweight class...

I linked the whole album yesterday. Somehow it catches you and does not let you go again, although it is not even my style of music, except the beautiful voice of Dido again. I am realyl obsessed with some of the song.

In the 80s they called this kind of album "concept albums", I think, meaning that kind of a narration led the listener through it, from the first to the last track. Alan Parson's albums are exmaples for that.

I also like the album cover art.

Does anyone know what R+ stands for? Dido's brother, I think his name is Rollo? Then it would be a family production. :) It starts to dawn on me that I missed the release of a new Dido album. Unforgivable!
