Yeah, they all made quite an impact here in the UK when they were released back in the day.
I remember being in a disco and stood in absolute kinks at the people who were trying to dance to the tune :)

This here has been the subject of many memes in our youth. A few years ago, the kids in my grade thought that this version of Take on Me is the best:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=dgha9S39Y6M
And memes such as this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzJDimvPW1Y
IMO, that is a pretty good song.
Kids in my age group listen to songs like Cardi B's WAP, which I cannot post here due to the nature of the music. Or other explict rap songs.

@ Catfish....... Arielle Dombasle, interesting lady. Her mum died when she was a young child and she was raised by her dad who was a diplomat in Mexico. I got to see Pacific Overtures live when the show was moved to LA on its national tour in 1976, with its original cast, a great many of whom were LA/Hollywood actors well known in local stage, TV and movies; I'm not really a big fan of stage musicals, in general, but there have been some that just stand out and Pacific Overtures was one of them; bad timing probably accounts for the relatively lackluster reception when it first ran; in 1976, it was the year of the Bicentennial and the was a sort of jingoism abroad in the US that was particularly vented against Japan, who were viewed as somehow being responsible for the woes of the US economy, particularly the auto industry; putting on a show about Japan and how it was affected by the forced 'opening' to the outside world at the point of US guns was probably not the best idea given the times...
Still, the show is a marvel of a musical, an impressive blending of the Broadway musical and Japanese Kabuki theater...

"Hello, hello" almost a wonder why Japan declared war so late :O:
"Letter from Admiral Perry addressed to the Emperor dated July 7, 1853:
"Many of the large ships-of-war destined to visit Japan have not yet arrived in these seas, though they are hourly expected; and the undersigned, as an evidence of his friendly intentions, has brought but four of the smaller ones, designing, should it become necessary, to return to Edo in the ensuing spring with a much larger force.
But it is expected that the government of your imperial majesty will render such return unnecessary, by acceding at once to the very reasonable and pacific overtures contained in the President's letter, and which will be further explained by the undersigned on the first fitting occasion.""
I guess the heralds pf the other colonial powers were equally "subtle" :haha:
A bit like a modern Jacques Offenbach's opera buffo.. also making fun of politics and politicians, hardly disguised by phantastic music. But i have never heard this before. Thanks for posting Eisenwurst and Vienna!

There actually are tapes of Hendrix jamming while playing classical compositions, mainly Bach; Hendrix developed an interest in classical composers when he found out the London building he moved into was once the home of George Frideric Handel; today, there are official English Heritage plaques honoring both musicians affixed to the building to commemorate those most famous of tenants...

Re Miumiu....they grow up so quick. She'll be teaching Music soon.
That could very well be true, but I suspect she may find other interests; there are a few videos posted on her YT page of her in her usual life and she is basically just a normal kid with normal kid interests; YT gave her an award for reaching a milestone on the number of views/followers and she was more interested in getting a new Barbie doll than the award, which was refreshing to see; she definitely has a great talent (her right hand control and skill is very impressive) and she seems to be fairly casual in her attitude about her talent and fame; I hope she really gets the chance to be just a kid and it appears her parent are giving her the chance; whatever she does, I suspect she will be quite good at her endeavors...

...
Another mashup....works well I think. :)
Ah, that demure chamber quartet, the Sex Pistols...
Steve Jones is still recovering from his heart attack late last year and has also been afflicted with diabetes and Bell's Palsy; he's a tough old dog and actually drove himself tp hospital when he woke up in the middle of the night with severe chest pains; the doctors told him he had a nearly complete arterial blockage and sent him to immediate emergency surgery...
Jonesy has lived in LA since the 80s and has been clean and sober since the 80s and lives a very healthy lifestyle; a bit of a change for a punk icon...
John Lydon, aka Johnny Rotten, also lives in LA and has since the early 80s, although he and Jonesy aren't really close friends and have spent years without even speaking to each other even though they live in the same city; Lydon has appeared as a guest on Jonesy's radio show and there didn't appear to be any real bad blood between them; Lydon became a US citizen in 2013 and still speaks his mind when asked his opinions on current matters; he is a surprising blend of liberal and conservative viewpoints and remains a true independent; some of his more conservative opinions would probably surprise/shock some of his fns who had him pegged as an anarchist at heart; he's been married to the same wife, Helen, for some 40 years now and is devoted to her; in recent years she was diagnosed with advancing Alzheimer's and Lydon has taken full responsibilities for her care, reusing to have others care for her or put her in some sort of residential care...
An interesting evolution for two men who were once the scourges of polite society...

Good on Jonesy . Driving himself to the hospital while he's having a heart attack.
Saw Johnny on "Judge Judy" a while back, he conducted himself very decently/respectfully and won his case.
IIRC he married the mother of one the girls from "The Slits" and has proved to be a loving devoted husband.......but did you like the mashup????

John is married to the mother of the late Ari Up of The Slits; when Ari passed away from cancer in LA, John and Helen adopted Ari's children and raised them to adulthood; being raised by John Lydon must have been an interesting experience...

:yeah:
I saw the Dolls when they made their West Coast debut at the Whisky A-Go-Go on the Sunset Strip in 1973; I'd heard of them and had heard one of their songs once on the radio;; I was up on the Strip when I noticed they were on the marquee at the Whisky, so I got in the queue with the usual assorted lot of hippies, rockers, and tourists waiting for the doors to open; I don't remember who was/were the opening act(s), but when the Dolls came on, it was a sight to see, and I don't mean just the band; the audience was used to the sort of laid back LA Laurel Canyon/Eagles-ish 'rock' and the Dolls were 180 degrees not what they were used to seeing; aside from David Johansen's glam-rock take on Jagger, the get-ups of the rest of the band just stunned the crowd; when they stormed into their first numbers, the sight of Johnny Thunders and Syl Sylvain, all wildly flying hair and Townsend-like windmills generating a wall/wail of sound just floored everybody; some of the 'peaceful easy feeling' types made for the exits, but for those who stayed, it was a memorable performance; when I started working at a nearby rock club, the Dolls were frequent customers...
Speaking of David Johansen (or David Doll, as he was known in 1973), he went on to have a modest career as an actor and a solo singing career under the name of Buster Poindexter...

There's a really good docu on YouTube about Arthur "Killer" Kane (Bass and thigh high latex boots) I was going to post it, but the end is a bit sad. Killer went though his problems after the Dolls broke up and wound up working in the library of LDS in L.A. He had a bit of a falling out with David/Buster but then in 2004 he had the chance to get back together with the band for a concert in London which went very well. He got back to L.A. and started to feel sick, went to the hospital and was told it was Leukemia and died two days later. :o

He got back to L.A. and started to feel sick, went to the hospital and was told it was Leukemia and died two days later. :o
Looked up the documentary you mentioned; I hadn't seen it before and was pleasantly surprised; Some of the other Dolls docs have been disappointments as they were either poorly done or overly sensationalized; as mentioned before, The Dolls were frequent customers at the club where I worked in Hollywood back in the 70s and I remember Arthur as a rather gentle, quiet person, quite unlike the rest of the Dolls; Arthur was a big guy, dwarfing his band mates and he was very popular with the groupies; the quiet guys always get the prettiest girls; he seemed perfectly content to just tag along, drink his pints, and observe the madness; at one point he broke his arm, his wrist IIRC, and came in with a cast on his arm; the other Dolls were ragging on him, going on and kidding him about how he would have to give up bass playing and find another job; the owner of the club joined in on the ribbing and offered him a job as a bartender; Arthur took the joke in stride and went behind the bar and spent the rest of the nihjt tending the bar, bad arm and all, much to the amusement of the Dolls; you were right when you said the ending is a bit sad, but, at least, Arthur got another moment in the sun to take with him on his homecoming...
Thanks for the clue on the documentary...
An odd coincidence in the film: Over the last several years, because I really do like to do research, I have assisted many persons in digging up genealogical information, often using the Social Security Death Index as a source; one day, while showing someone how to use the Index, I just decided to input my father's data as an example; the SSDI showed my father had died in 2000 and, prior to that day, I wasn't aware of his passing; so, when I saw the segment abut Arthur finding out about his father's death the same way, I really felt for him and with him...
This clip is of the taping of a Dolls performance back in 1973, the year I first saw them and the year they broke big in LA; the performance was taped for a local LA teen music program MC'd by a "boss Radio" DJ named The Real Don Steele; I recognize a lot of the people in the video and, if you notice the young ladies on the elevated platform on the right side, those were some of the more 'famous' groupies of the LA scene; I rather imagine a lot of the people in the clip are either long gone or grandparents themselves; now, that would be a reunion to see...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UMnzpU39uKo
...clips like this is what makes me wonder how we survived for another half-century...

September 18, 1970: The music world lost James Marshall Hendrix aka Jimi Hendrix at the age of 27; his stardom lasted only about three years, but his influence on music in general and guitarists in particular has lasted over the intervening 50 years and continues still; no matter what genre, period, style, or performers age, guitarists still hold Hendrix as the benchmark by which to measure their own abilities; I wanted to play guitar at a young age, got an acoustic, and, like a lot of other kids, worked out the four or so basic chords that allowed a person to play virtually every song popular in the 50s and 60s; then I saw the Beatles on Ed Sullivan and realized, if I had an electric guitar, I, too, could have scads of girls screaming out my name and chasing me; it wasn't until I heard the single Hey Joe followed by the album Are You Experienced that I decided I not only wanted to really learn to play guitar, I wanted to learn to play guitar any where near as good as Hendrix; I may or may not have gotten to my exact goals, but I did learn an awful lot from Jimi's playing and, over the last half-century, so have an awful lot of other guitarists all around the world, not to mention his influences on composers, songwriters, recording producers/technicians/sound artists; not bad for a shy kid from Seattle, Washington who got fired from nearly every band he toiled in...
Gone. but not forgotten, thank you, Jimi, for making the music so many have tried to assimilate and for opening our ears to sounds we didn't know were there in ways we couldn't have dreamt of...
