Oddly, when I clicked your Ventures video, it showed up as "Video Unavailable", yet, when I entered the title of the video in another tab, it opened up normally... :hmmm:

Good clip; seeing how bands used to just come out an play without all the visual distractions and high tech assists is educational; note that The Ventures didn't even have stage monitor speakers, so all they had to go on to keep together was what came out of the amps or drum kit...

The bass player seems to have missed a bit of rehearsal for the stage choreography...

The Ventures were a great great band. I'm not sure if they influenced Dick Dale or the other way around. Luckily, their music can be found on CD's.

The rather tall bass player prominently featured at the beginning of the video is Chas Chandler; he is known for his stint with The Animals, but when he quit the band over money and management disputes, he found even more fame as an artist manager and record producer; while on tour in the US, he discovered an unknown, struggling guitarist who called himself Jimmy James; Chandler immediately signed James to a management contract and brought him over to England; Chas had James change his last name back to his real last name, Hendrix, and shortened his first name to Jimi; Chas also provided the financial backing for Hendrix's recording sessions and introduced Jimi to a friend of Chas', a guy named Clapton...

This would have been enough of a gold star on the CV, but Chas also found some success as the manager and mentor for the UK band Slade, one of the most successful bands out of the UK...

This clip is from a local LA TV show taped in Hollywood at the old KHJ-TV studios (now part of Paramount Pictures Studio) a few blocks from my current home; although the clip's title says 1961, the show actually only ran about a year from about 1965-1966; the same studio was used to film a local music dance show, 9th Street West, and I was given a ticket to one of the show's taping; the major part of the studio, the Hollywood-a-Go Go set, was hidden behind some flats and we, the less 'glamorous' types were confined to a relatively small area of the studio; I did, however, make a brief appearance in an on-camera closeup, sitting in the bleachers (I was way to cool to be seen dancing)...

Route 66 [full title: [Get Your Kicks On) Route 66] is an interesting song because it has been recorded by so very many artists in so many different genres and styles since it was first recorded by Nat King Cole in 1946:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCYApJtsyd0

(BTW, the guitarist in the above clip is the great Oscar Moore, arguably one of the finest jazz guitarists of the 1940s and 50s...)...

The song was written by Bobby Troup, a composer/musician/arranger/singer who made a name for himself in the jazz, Blues, and R&B scenes and was a much sought after songwriter; this is a clip of Troup singing his signature song with his own jazz group:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLUYf6cekMA

Bobby Troup was very well respected in the music business and had established a reputation as an advocate for integration in the music business, starting with his service in the US Marine Corps in WW2:

After graduating from college in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps but did not receive orders until January 1942. After completing officer training, he was assigned as one of two dozen white officers to direct recruit training at Montford Point, the recruit depot for the first black Marines. In 1943 he became recreation officer and helped build a recreation hall, basketball court, and outdoor boxing ring. A friend installed a miniature golf course. At Montford Point, he also organized the first African-American band of U.S. Marines. During this time he composed "Take Me Away from Jacksonville", which was to become an anthem of sorts for the Marines at Montford Point and other areas of Camp Lejeune.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bobby_Troup

I recall seeing him as an actor on the TV series Emergency! back in the 1970s; I saw his name in the credits and wondered if he was the same Bobby Troup who wrote Route 66; turned out he was the one and same; the TV series also featured the beautiful Julie London, who was the real life wife of Troup and who had been discovered by Troup who encouraged her to pursue a recording career:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXg6UB9Qk0o

Troup and London were married for 44 years until Troup's passing away...

Route 66 has been covered by artists as diverse as Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Asleep At The Wheel, Manhattan Transfer, The Cramps, and many, many others; the most recent well-known version I could think of was this one by Depeche mode:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwPV3qJegEE

Sharp-eared listeners may detect how very much the opening notes of the above clip mirrors the opening of the ZZ Top song Sharp Dressed Man whose opening licks mirror the opening notes of Bobby Troup's Route 66...

...goes around, comes around...

In the past, there have been a couple of posts dealing with the possible origins of surf music; some hold it started with Dick Dale recordings in 1961; I have suggested the overall sound of surf music (slinky guitars, rich reverb, etc.) may have come from Santo & Johnny's Sleep Walk in 1959; however there is another contender to the pre-Dick Dale crown: a British band called The Shadows who had a huge 1960 UK hit with this instrumental, Apache:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzgbcyfJgfQ

Th Shadows were the backing band for an iconic UK pop singer, Cliff Richard, and they also recorded numbers on their own. The song seems like a presaging of not only surf music, but, also, the musical guitar style and sound of future Italian "spaghetti western" soundtracks...

The fellow in the videos who looks a bit like a Buddy Holly clone is Hank Marvin, a legend in UK musical circles for his style of guitar playing and, much as US guitarists point back to Chuck Berry or Bo Diddley as early idols, UK guitarists revered Hank. He had a serious Buddy Holly (whom he closely resembled) obsession and had a Fender Stratocaster specially ordered and imported because he had seen pictures and newsreels of Buddy playing a Strat as his main guitar; Hank's Strat had a bright red finish and it became part of Hank's trademark image...

When Hank got the Strat, it came with fairly heavy gauge string, which made it hard to bend notes, but he liked the sound of the heavier strings, so he compensated by heavy use of the tremolo (whammy) bar to get his sounds; he also is known for his use of reverb/echo which he started when one of his band mates got an early echo unit and didn't like it at all, so Hank took possession; one man's disappointment was another man's success...

The Shadows did a version of Sleep Walk themselves with Hank Marvin's slinky guitar at the center:

Just continuing the "Surf Music" theme a bit.

Little Pattie was a young teenage girl who "cracked the big time" ( our version ) just as Surfing was becoming popular in Australia. She went on to have a long recording/live music/television career.

She was also the Late Chrissie Amphlett's ( Divinyls ) cousin. And in her case a Breast Cancer survivor.

Musical family.

P.S. Very early surf music down here ( Australia ) is really different from the "Classic California Surf Sound" that developed just a few years later from the States.

P.S. Very early surf music down here ( Australia ) is really different from the "Classic California Surf Sound" that developed just a few years later from the States.

The sound of the recording of Little Pattie seemed a little bit too "British Invasion", as we call it here in the States, so I looked up the release date and found it was Pattie's first single release from 1963, so it actually is about a couple of years behind the "Classic California Surf Sound" that started around 1961; the song also sounds like some of the numbers written for all those teen surf movies from the early to late 1960s; it shares the same sort of transitional styles from the dominance of Tin Pan Alley/Brill Building pop music to its replacement by the evolving Dylan/Beatles, singer/songwriter norm of today...

I stumbled across this song while looking up the Little Pattie story and, although I remember this song now, it had completely slipped my mind; this was released in 1961 and the band, The Belairs, had members pass through who would later become parts of more famous surf acts...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMaW_Se_8q8

The Bel-Airs --

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bel-Airs

The fact many of The Belairs' members later joined so many different acts is not unusual in the CA surf scene; the various musicians and/or singers often appeared on each others' recordings, usually without credit, due to record company restrictions; Jan & Dean used to sing on Beach Boys recordings and members of the Beach Boys performed on Jan & Dean's releases; interestingly, at the start of surf music, a lot of the instrumental side of the music was not recorded by the acts themselves, but by elite studio musicians such as the famous "Wrecking Crew", a situation that led to problems when the bands would go out on tour; a lot of the band members didn't really have the musical or technical chops to recreate the pros' work, so live performances were kind of erratic at times, with band member playing 'dumbed down' versions of their own released recordings; I saw the Beach Boys live once, very early on, and was a bit disappointed with the musicianship and looseness of the band; I never bothered to see the live after that...

July 12 1962: five scruffy youths performed for the first as a group with a name they had just adopted: The Rolling Stones; 58 years later, the Stones still roll along...

Their first single was appropriate for them; the A-side was a cover of a song written by one of their idols. US legendary rocker Chuck Berry...

The A-side of their second single was a song written by and given to them by a couple of fellow UK musician/songwriters who were shopping around their songs on the London musical circuit as a side venture in case the the group they were in, also newly minted, should fail or fall apart; the songwriters would, and their own group would go on to be legends themselves and close friends of the Stones...

A-Side first single 1963...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFmTv9413tw

A-Side second single 1964 performance, live...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VIrCCL0XqY

Interesting trivia: The Stones became the first act to ever appear on UK's Top Of The Pops when the show debuted in 1964 and the song they performed was Lennon/McCartney's I Wanna Be Your Man...

Also in 1964, Charlie Watts married his girlfriend, Shirley, and they are still together 56 years later...

You may notice the guitarist, Billy Zoom, plays with his legs spread farapart; he adopted that stance because in earlier bands he played with, his very tall height made him tower over shorter band mates, leading sometimes to conflicts with the 'star' members who thought he was stealing the spotlight from them, so he tried to 'shorten' himself visually...

The problems with band member heights actually led to one band altering their name; The Small Faces got their name because the members were all a bit on the short side; when new band members Ron Wood and Rod Stewart, who are both tall, joined the band, the "Small" was dropped from their name...

Its sometimes a bit of a shock when some mashups mesh really well, particularly if the acts involved are substantially different in genre...

A note on Steve Jones, the guitarist for the Sex Pistols; he has been a staple on the LA music scene for decades now and has hosted his own radio show for a long time; he has been clean and sober for a very long time and proud of it; he also has been a long time adopter of a healthy life style in eating and exercise including, surprisingly for a former Punk legend, the practice of Yoga; he has been absent form the airwaves, off and on, for the past couple of years and there has been much speculation about the state of his health; it was revealed a few months back Steve had suffered a double whammy of a case of Bell's Palsy and a heart attack requiring emergency surgery...

Spotlight: Sex Pistol Steve Jones’ ‘Jonesy’s Jukebox’ Is Still One of LA Radio’s Most Steadfast Rock Institutions --

Jonesy has also gone in big time with social media and this is a quarantine YT video he posted singing and playing guitar from his home's bathroom (better acoustics)...

I was looking through Youtube and I saw a title that made me pause. It said, " Worst guitar player of 2016." The guitar player is Dhalif Ali and he is actually one of the best guitar players that I have ever heard. Great string and note bending techniques. I think the song is called "darkest dreams." There is a link on the Youtube video. Enjoy.

In the late 1950s, Wanda Jackson recorded and released a number of rockabilly songs, including "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad", "Mean, Mean Man", "Fujiyama Mama" (which hit number 1 in Japan) and "Honey Bop". The songs were only regional hits. She toured Japan in February and March 1959. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztFHvNwRb6Q (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztFHvNwRb6Q) the Queen of rockabilly: Despite her decreasing health, Jackson is vibrant, energized and excited about her future endeavors, which include an album of original material produced by Joan Jett, https://www.rollingstone.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/shutterstock_8095044b.jpg?resize=1800,1200&w=450

This is not Julia Roberts daughter ... Just a look alike, but oh so young playing a Tom Jobim song composed in 1962
In fact I am not even sure that she is singing the song. Sure sexy though, uh?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0IUUUtP8PQ

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes
Each one she passes goes "ah"

[Frank Sinatra]
When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes "ooh"

[Frank Sinatra]
But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes, I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

[Frank Sinatra]
Tall, (and) tan, (and) young, (and) lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, I smile but she doesn't see
(doesn't see)

I don't like writing Music Histories so I'll keep it brief.

The lesson for today is "The Bromley Contingent".

The Bromley Contingent were a bunch of fans that were "discovered" by the Press at the time of the "Bill Grundy Interview". Some of them formed bands that split up and formed other bands...and so on.

They were just a bunch of mates that went to gigs. Some of them ( Siouxsie Sioux, Billy Idol ) went on to have long careers in the Music Industry.

I stumbled across this Single purely by accident whilst researching Pop Art. I didn't know they put out any records let alone an LP. This is RARE stuff. "Not rare enough" says the ghost of Bill Grundy.

And I always thought Sue Catwoman was just a character "invented" by Malcolm Mclaren and Julien Temple...but she put out a record....

This clip is the entire performance by Prince and his band, 3rdeygirl, a trio of female musicians he assembled to back him up for his rock-based projects; all three are amazing musicians, in their own rights, and are more than equal to the task of performing alongside Prince; Donna Grantis, the guitarist, is amazingly talented and drummer Hannah Welton and bassist Ida Kristine Nielsen are a solid rhythm, forceful section; this is a very much stripped down performance without the usual grand-scale staging of Prince's usual shows, just Prince and the band on a pretty bare stage (until the second encore); guitarists will particularly enjoy Prince's mastery of his guitar and the interplay between himself and Donna...

^ Why did he convert to Islam, and changed his name? :hmmm:

Around this time (1975), while swimming at a Malibu beach, Stevens nearly drowned. Facing imminent death led the singer to make a promise: If divine intervention could save him from drowning, Stevens would devote his life to honoring God. According to Stevens, a wave pushed him to shore as if in answer to his prayers. Soon after this brush with mortality, Stevens' brother gave him with a copy of the Koran as a birthday present. The book made a deep impact on the musician.

In 1977, Stevens changed his name to Yusuf Islam and converted to the Muslim faith. Along with his adherence to his newfound religion, Stevens mandated that he would no longer record secular music. The following year, A&M Records released Back to Earth, a backlog of previously recorded tracks. The release experienced mild success.

Quick Tip: Don't Use A Powerbar With A Speaker

I was til now. I had some buzz on speakers a few months ago. A suggestion I found was to plug audio gear and speakers into the same power bar which did solve the problem. However I just came across this,

"In this video we show you how using a powerbar with your speakers can cause the speakers to go into peak protection mode, when there is still an abundant and consistent power supply.

Speakers can trick the power bar into thinking that there is a power surge and they will go into surge protection mode, which will cause the speakers to get less power and go into peak protection mode. This means that you will get less dynamic range from your speakers, and less overall volume."

An epic duet from 2 accomplished voices. Martina Mcbride and Pat Benatar. Pat Benatar along with Ann Wilson of Heart are largely the gold standard of vocalists with which others are compared. This clip is from an episode of CMT Crossroads. Amazingly, Pat Benatar hasn't lost anything in her quality of voice or looks or missed a beat in the intervening years since her initial debut decades ago. Look it up on Youtube if you would like to see the episode in it's entirety.

^ Talk about an epic performance. I remember seeing this when it first aired and was absolutely speechless. I had posted this same video a while ago but like everyone else, I could watch it over and over. For Heart's Ann and Nancy Wilson to perform a classic song in front of the originators and perform it so well is amazing. My only disappointment with Heart is that guitarist Nancy Wilson was never able to showcase her considerable vocal chops and abilities to a larger degree.

Here is Nancy Wilson and Heart. This clip and album features the considerable talents of drummer Denny Carmassi, Mark Andes on bass guitar and Howard Lees on lead guitar, Nancy Wilson on acoustic guitar and of course Ann Wilson on backing vocals. I don't think Heart ever had a better lineup of musicians and artists as when they made this album.

Oh I got a band new shiny helmet
And a pair of kinky boots
I've got a lovely new flak jacket and a lovely khaki suit
And when we go on night patrol we hold each others hands
We are the British Army and we're here to take your land

That last line gets me all the time. :haha:
